Propagation News – 20 February 2022

Last week was pretty subdued in terms of sunspots, but it looks like we missed one of the most impressive space weather events of Solar Cycle 25. A bright, fast-moving coronal mass ejection, or CME, was visible coming off the far side of the Sun on imagery from the STEREO Ahead spacecraft. Had this event been Earth facing, we could only presume that a large-scale geomagnetic storm may have been triggered. Just how big is hard to judge. Other than that, the Kp index has been in the range of one to three, so nothing too dramatic.

Sunspot-wise, there have been eight active groups but they have all been small and the solar flux index has steadfastly remained in the low 100s.

Unfortunately, it looks like we will have more of the same as NOAA predicts that next week the SFI will be in the range 102-108. Geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be settled, at least until around Tuesday the 22nd to Thursday the 24th, when the Kp index could rise to five. There is also a large coronal hole that will be Earth-facing by Friday the 18th. As such, this could also trigger an elevated Kp index, perhaps later this weekend.

To check, keep an eye on the Real Time Solar Wind indicator on solarham.com. If the solar wind speed rises and the Bz swings southwards (negative) we may expect the solar plasma to more easily couple with the Earth’s magnetic field and the Kp index to rise shortly after.

Radio-wise, please note it is the ARRL DX CW contest this weekend. This is a great opportunity to work much-needed areas for your Worked All States award. And this may be the last good chance to work the US before the summer HF doldrums start in a couple of month’s time.

VHF and up:

I hope that everyone’s antennas survived the gales over the last few days, as the very strong jet stream across the Atlantic is providing plenty of severe weather for the fringes of Europe with damaging gales and plenty of tense moments for big antenna arrays.

The coming week shows little change, with a continuation of the unsettled weather and further windy periods as deepening lows cross the country. These will bring some cold air too, and snowfall in some areas may put added stress on the antenna wires and beams. All this means little chance of seeing any Tropo and, like last week, only a chance of aurora, or meteor scatter in the early mornings, to provide variety.

This is a good time to get the locator square count up on the various satellites. QO-100 is always a banker for making QSOs and worth the effort of setting up a small system.

Moon declination is negative again, with shortening Moon windows and lower peak elevation as the week progresses. With lowest losses as we approach perigee next Saturday, the upside is that if you have a clear low angle of take-off to the horizon, it’s the best period for GHz band EME.

For VHFers, if you also have low site noise you can get a shot at digimode EME without the need for elevation control. QSOs can often be made with the big guns using legal QRO and a single Yagi. 144MHz sky noise is low to moderate until Friday, reaching 2,400 Kelvin at Moonset. (sgb.org)

In this case we are again from the Sendezentrum in Kall blamed without any basis for these jammings to be (jointly) responsible.

It is true that we have to defend ourselves against attacks from Kall for many years, among other things, the station was twice located by the Federal Network Agency as jammer of our programs;
however, we use only legal means, otherwise we would be just such morons as certain other people in the Eifel.

The K7RA Solar Update

A sunspot group emerged on February 10, two more on February 11, two more on February 14 and three more on February 16, when the daily sunspot number rose to 111 — the highest value for this reporting week and well above the weekly average of 75.3. The average for the previous week was 83.9. On February 17 another new sunspot region emerged, but the daily sunspot number declined from 111 to 103.

The 111 sunspot number was the highest since the end of 2021, when sunspot numbers went as high as 147 following a few days of no sunspots at all.

On Thursday, February 17, the Daily Sun image on Spaceweather.com showed seven sunspot groups, the whole earth-facing side of the sun peppered with spots.

Average daily solar flux declined from 126 to 110.1. Average daily planetary A index went from 14.4 to 13, and average daily middle latitude A index declined just 1.3 points to 8.3.

Why do we care about sunspot numbers? Because high values correlate with greater density in the ionosphere, which gives us better propagation at higher frequencies. Sixty-four years ago, sunspot numbers were so high that hams saw worldwide around-the-clock propagation on 10 meters. Sunspot numbers were never that high before or since. That was the peak of Solar Cycle 19. Newly licensed hams thought it would always be like that. It never was.

Predicted solar flux over the next month was downgraded from February 16 – 17 forecasts, and is 95 on February 18 – 19; 98 on February 20; 102 on February 21 – 23; 105 on February 24; 108 on February 25 – 27; 110 on February 28; 115 on March 1 – 2; 112 and 110 on March 3 – 4; 108 on March 5 – 8; 105 on March 9 – 11; 103 on March 12 – 13; 100 on March 14; 98 on March 15 – 16; 102 on March 17 – 19; 104 on March 20 – 22, 108 on March 23 – 26, and 110 on March 27.

Predicted planetary A index is 5 on February 18 – 19; 18, 15, and 12 on February 20 – 22; 10, 8, and 10 on February 23 – 25; 15 and 10 on February 24 – 25; 5 on February 26 – March 2; 12, 15, 10, and 8 on March 3 – 6; 5 on March 7 – 10; 15, 12, and 10 on March 11 – 13; 5 on March 14 – 18; 8, 5, 12, 15, 18, and 10 on March 19 – 24, and 5 on March 25 – 29.

Here’s the “Weekly Commentary on the Sun, the Magnetosphere, and the Earth’s Ionosphere” for February 10, from F.K. Janda, OK1HH.

“Solar activity has reached a moderate level, including occurrence of M-class flares. The activity on the far side of the sun was greater, as evidenced by CME observations beyond the eastern limb of the solar disk, which do not affect Earth’s ionosphere.

“We observed exceptionally poor conditions of ionospheric propagation on 80 and, especially, 160 meters on the night of February 14-15, UTC. The cause was a several-day decrease in solar radiation (X-ray level), accompanied by a decrease in the speed of the solar wind, as a source of ionization by particles. The improvement started on the morning of February 15, beginning from the eastern direction when the ionosphere was irradiated by the sun again.

“Solar activity is expected to rise only slowly in the coming days, reaching a flat quasi-peak maximum in early March. The activity of Earth’s magnetic field should increase irregularly and only slightly again on February 20 – 21 and 24 – 25 (February 22 – 24, according to other sources), causing only the usual fluctuations in propagation conditions.”

NN4X reported on February 16:

“I was a little late to the party on 10 meters, having started checking propagation on 12 meters first.

“Conditions were excellent, easily the best 10-meter long-path opening I’ve ever seen. “I was fortunate to have FT8 QSOs with these stations: BF7IEJ (1304 UTC); YC9AUB (1306 UTC); YC1THS (1319 UTC); YC7UDD (1346 UTC); VK3EW (1419 UTC); JK1OZS (1344 UTC); VR2CH (1307 UTC); VR2XYL (1305 UTC), and VR2VAZ (1339 UTC). I also worked VR2CH on 10-meter long path on February 15.

“While monitoring FT8 on 12 meters around 1905 UTC this afternoon, with the antenna pointed 90°, looking for African stations, I noticed YB0DJ decode.

“I proceeded to work him, and he was gone shortly thereafter. I’ve never seen a long path opening so far away from sunrise to sunset. Using PSKR, we can see at least some of the extent of that opening (note that the daylight/darkness shading is for the time I ran the search).”

N0JK (EM28) reported on February 17:

“A sporadic-E opening occurred on February 13 UTC. I logged W4IMD (EM84) on 50.313 MHz at 0141 UTC, the only Es station worked on 6 meters. Then, on 17 meters I worked KC5LT (EM86) at 0228 UTC on FT8 on Es. Sporadic-E openings are rare in February.”

Sunspot numbers for February 10 – 16 were 78, 86, 54, 53, 72, 73, and 111, with a mean of 75.3. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 118, 113.1, 110.5, 105.4, 106.5, 114.3, and 102.9, with a mean of 110.1. Estimated planetary A indices were 21, 20, 13, 15, 8, 5, and 9, with a mean of 13. Middle latitude A index was 12, 12, 10, 9, 6, 3, and 6, with a mean of 8.3.

WBCQ 4790 kHz (Radio Angela) runs its final week of propagation tests February 20-26 US local date (February 21-27 world date) as follows:

0300-0500 UTC February 20-21 world date (10pm-12pm EST US date)
0200-0400 UTC February 22-27 world date (9pm-11pm EST US date)

Programs used in the testing are Behavior Night, Marion's Attic, From the Isle of Music, Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, Bluegrass Frame of Mind, Jetzt Geht's Los!, Tom Call Theater, Rock Wave and a sneak preview of WBCQ Concert Hall.

When the Radio Angela regular schedule begins world date March 1 (US date February 28), these programs will be joined by several new shows presented by talent from around the world. Sam Sánchez, Oregon had it as early as 1414 via Brasília; and Wolfgang Büschel, Germany, 1500-1520 via Montevideo (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 6000, Feb 16 at 0700, S9+20 of dead air from RHC; all other frequencies are off already as I expect this one shortly shall be too. Something`s always wrong? at RHC. 5040 however bears a JBA carrier, presumably VANUATU (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ROMANIA. 7220, Feb 16 at 2305, I am plenty busy simulmonitoring English from SPAIN and TURKEY [qq.vv.] at once but make a quick check of RRI: at UTwente, very heavy rapid clicking ranging 7200-7240, OTH radar? centred right on maybe a trace of RRI. But at Maryland SDR, much further beyond W European target, RRI is loud and clear with none of that QRM. Or could be local problem at UTwente? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 16 at 2307, token REE English is not off the air but VG S9+15/27 into Maryland SDR. After news, feature about a ``ghost village`` uncovered in a draining reservoir; 2310 about Gala cinema awards in Valencia, not in Castilian. Shortly retune to TURKEY, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Feb 16 tune-in from Spain at 2316, closing a `Feeling Supreme` feature about some remedy, +018 Hz offset and S9+35 into UTwente but annoying hum. Otherwise sufficient modulation and no squeal. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. 2318 `Weekly Commentary` penned by someone in a Washington DC branch, but neither intro nor outro can I understand their name or credentials, as voiced by the YL with heavy accent, but it`s about Qatar as a useful non-NATO ally. 2329, `Turkey`s Cultural Treasures,` something dating back thousands of years; but at 2330 it`s my time for `NBC Nightly [sic] News` already before sunset here. Later always enjoyable Turkish music fill, 2353 the usual OM announcer sign-off of the ``1230-1330 on 15450 to Europe`` broadcast! Which is doubly erroneous, the A-season scheduling only. Something`s always awry at Ankara. The CCCCCCI has been growing and uncovered at VOT 2354* after only a fragment of one IS iteration (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re 305 kHz, my Feb 15 log of beacon OI, S. Sioux City NE, Rick Barton replies: ``Hey Glenn. My only expertise here is being a DXer and being the son of two general aviation pilots.

Many of the NDBs used to set up approaches to airports use 5 letter names, i.e., "BILOY" that sets up for Billard Airport in Topeka, Kansas. of course, the beacon call is "TO". This is also true of enroute IFR "intersections", such as the "PAYSO" intersection, NW of Phoenix, but close to Payson, AZ. Another beacon, that sets up an approach for Charles City (IA) airport, is designated "CHUKK" (get it? Charles, Chuck Hi HI).

Anyway, I learned over time that some of the airnav sites are named for purely local things like nearby golf courses, businesses, rivers and lakes, or even ghost towns. Someone from South Sioux City, Neb. might have your answer.

It may be that the airport where the beacon is located, Martin Field, was named for Tom Martin. Beacons "at the field" are usually named for the airport itself, and may not use the 5 letter rule. But I took a look at the aviation chart and saw right off that the beacon is one of two that set up approaches for Sioux City Gateway Airport's Runway 13/31. (The other beacon is SU-"SALIX"). It may have been convenient that the nearby town of Salix, IA, has 5 letters! 73 from the Sonoran Desert - rb`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. 335 MCW kHz, Feb 16 at 0654 UT, BV, 25-watt ND beacon at BatesVille, Arkansas; mixing with dash and YLD, 1000 watts at Chapleau, Ontario which is normally heard without any BV.

** TURKEY. 5960+, Feb 15 at 2333, VOT direct is S9/S6 but just barely modulated. Checking UTwente at 2348 it`s +016 Hz high, undermodulated but sufficient if you turn up the volumes on strong S9+27 signal; compared to e.g. much louder 6015 station, Kazakh from East Turkistan, standard denunciation. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. 2353 unusual s/off by heavily accented YL as if this were the 1330 broadcast, IS until 2356* uncovering another Urumqi in Chinese, its CCCCCCI having been audible before TRT quit. Now at least until the 0000 timesignal, another carrier is making a rumbling SAH, unaccounted for in listings, so I guess it may be the Emirler exciter before turned off completely (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9455, Feb 15 at 1612, NO signal from WRMI-5 which is supposedly 24/7 including TOMBS cult all day, according to skedgrid now labeled as ``WRMI B21 Broadcast Schedule as of January 20, 2023`` [sic!]; but other WRMIs, 9395 & 9955 are on and well audible. 9455 azimuth is 285 degrees, close to thisaway, same as 7730 which when on has a better signal here.

On 9455, no sign either of CNR1 jammer or RFA Chinese via Saipan as scheduled this hour, but M/W/F only and this is Tuesday, instead:

9720, Feb 15 at 1613, music with fast SAH, repeating melody like an unknown interval signal, 1614 other music, S6-S8. This is the Tue & Thu RFA Chinese via SAIPAN frequency and CNR1 jammer, instead of 9455 M/W/F. So what about 16-17 UT Sat & Sun? 9900 shown by WRTH 2022. This jumparound obviously does not escape ChiCom jamming, so why bother? Must confuse casual non-DXer listeners.

9455 is back on with SMTV cult at next check 0118 UT Feb 16; as WRMI skedgriddled at 01-07 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

WASHINGTON – La administración del presidente Joe Biden tiene planes para hacer nuevos recortes presupuestarios a Radio y Televisión Martí, de acuerdo con los planes anunciados por la Agencia de Estados Unidos para los Medios Globales (USAGM) y la Oficina de Administración de Personal (OPM).

De ser aprobado, sería el segundo recorte presupuestario a Radio y TV Martí desde la llegada de Biden a la Casa Blanca en enero de 2021...

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
07 - 13 February 2022

Solar activity was at low to moderate (R1-Minor) levels. The
strongest event of the period was an M1/Sn (R1-Minor) flare at
12/0844 UTC from the vicinity of Region 2939 (S15, L=34,
class/area=Dho/500 on 01 Feb). A Type II (642 km/s) and Type IV
radio sweep were associate with the event. A subsequent CME
signature from the W limb was identified and modeled. The results
suggested no Earth-directed component was present. Region 2941 (N24,
L=370, class/area=Eki/370 on 09 Feb) was the largest and most
complex region remaining on the visible disk by the end of the
period. Over the past week the leader and trailer spots changed
little while the intermediate spots were marked mostly by decay. Of
the remaining numbered active regions, only Region 2940 (N22, L=035,
class/area=Dki/410 on 01 Feb) produced any C-class X-ray activity,
the largest of which was a C9 flare at 12/1708 UTC as it rotated
around the W limb.

Other activity included a Type II (547 km/s) radio sweep at 13/0218
UTC. The event was associated with a CME signature off the W limb
and was not expected to contain an Earth-directed component.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached
high levels on 07-11 Feb and 13 Feb, with a maximum flux of 11,400
sfu observed at 08/1535 UTC. Electron flux dropped to normal to
moderate levels on 12 Feb in response to elevated geomagnetic
activity associated transient influence.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to minor storm (G1-Minor)
levels. Waning negative polarity CH HSS influence produced quiet to
unsettled levels on 07 Feb. 08-09 Feb were quiet. The arrival of
influence from CME that left the Sun on 06 Feb produced a weak
discontinuity in the solar wind, first observed after 09/2011 UTC.
Only isolated unsettled conditions were observed following the
influence of the sheath, which transitioned to the driver around
10/1350 UTC. Subsequent geomagnetic activity increased up to minor
storm levels over 10-11 Feb. A peak total magnetic field strength of
21 nT was observed at 11/1737 UTC, near the end of magnetic cloud.
The maximum southward deflection of the Bz component was -13 nT at
10/1503 UTC. A transition from CME influence to a negative polarity
CH HSS was observed around 11/2211 UTC. Wind speeds increased to
near 550 km/s, up from between 375-450 km/s that was observed
through most of the CME. The resulting geomagnetic response was
mostly unsettled on 12-13 Feb, with the exception of an isolated
period of active conditions observed early on 13 Feb.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
14 February - 12 March 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels, with a chance for
M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares over 14-16 Feb, primarily due
to the flare potential from Region 2941 (N24, L=340,
class/area=Eki/370 on 09 Feb). Activity is expected to drop to very
low levels as the region rotates beyond the W limb.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to range from normal to high levels. High levels are likely
on 14-16 Feb, 23-28 Feb, 04-10 Mar and 12 Mar in response to
influence from multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the
outlook period is expected to be at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to minor
storm (G1-Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. Minor storm levels are
likely on 23 Feb and 04 Mar; active conditions are likely on 22 Feb,
24 Feb, 03 Mar and 11-12 Mar; unsettled conditions are likely on 14
Feb, 20 Feb, 25 Feb and 05-06 Mar. All elevated levels of
geomagnetic activity are anticipated in response to multiple,
recurrent CH HSSs. the remainder of the outlook period is expected
to be quiet.

** GUAM. 15215, Feb 14 at 2226, vocal SE Asian music, S5/S2, best if not only signal from west on mostly vacant band; it`s KSDA amid Vietnamese hour, beamed even further west from Agat. One can only wonder how 7DA meshes or conflicts with Vietnamese culture, as well as ts countless other targets (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** LUXEMBOURG. 234 kHz, Feb 13 at 2326, RTL VG into UTwente, during special about history of pirate radio. At tune-in a put-off, English and French narration mixing at same level! One must be voice-over of the other, which should be avoided except possibly when there be stereo separation. About R. Caroline, clip of ``199`` ID = metres; 2329 French only, about R. Atlanta. Too much else going on at this hour to keep listening, e.g. UBMP, not to mention WOR. BTW, in my LW bandscans for beacons I never hear a trace of this 375/750 kW signal nor any other European LWBC.

Richard Langley, NB, tells the WOR iog: ``Interesting show. Although the commentary is in French, there was lots of English in the sound clips and jingles from the different English stations. And the pop songs of course. And those with a smattering of French can follow the drift. I recorded the show using the U. Twente SDR receiver with good quality. Outstanding signal at first seems the OSOB = only signal on band, until I find also a JBA carrier on 11875, so instead it`s the SSOB = strongest signal on band. At 0352 I switch to Knoxville SDR which is getting 11650 better, S7-S9 reading also, during dialog talk and carrier offset displayed as +53.6 Hz, varying to +52.3 Hz. It`s Radio Tamazuj, via MADAGASCAR, which also accounts for offfrequenciness. MUF barely to 12 MHz is funxional for this trans-equatorial signal; but the 11875 must be VOA Somali via UAE, close to trans-polar (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690 reactivated after AWOL Friday, Monday Feb 14 at 2300, token REE English, VG via Maryland SDR; after news mainly interview about a Greek film; but at 2325 acknowledging World Radio Day yesterday with UNESCO statement about it, and last minute at 2329 a bit of a Spanish version of Elvis Costello`s ``Radio, Radio`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Instead a weak carrier which bumps up to S9 at 2309, JIP PBS Xinjiang, Mandarin in progress from Urumqi, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems. Initially lots of noise but cleared up by WOR time; power output surges at station? Also checked at UTwente tuning MW rather than SW: at 2120, 1323 kHz is good and clear into other side of Europe, S6-S7 over slight CCI.

FTIOM & UBMP To Cease Broadcasts From Germany & Bulgaria

I began From The Isle of Music six years ago and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot five years ago, starting small on WBCQ and eventually expanding to Europe and beyond with Channel 292 for both programs and Space Line for FTIOM. I am not a wealthy man, and my programs have been literally 99.9% self-funded during that period. The very small handful of contributors has been appreciated but has never been large enough to put a dent in costs.

Over the past two years, my living expenses have increased precipitously while my income and contributions have not. With great reluctance, I must make some difficult financial decisions. One of them is that broadcasts on Space Line have already ceased, and broadcasts on Channel 292 will cease March 5. This is a purely financial decision, I have very much enjoyed working with both stations and will deeply miss the audiences that I will probably lose. While the financial support from listeners was minimal, the emotional support has been huge, many of those listeners feel like family now.

Broadcasts will continue on WBCQ The Planet where these programs began. FTIOM will continue on 7490 kHz, currently Tuesdays 0000-0100 UTC, and UBMP will continue on 7490 kHz Sundays, currently 2300-0000 UTC. Both of these livestream on WBCQ.com, so listeners unable to catch the terrestrial broadcast (or who are asleep at those hours) may be able to record live for later listening. Both programs will also be part of the new special lineup on 4790 kHz which is being fully sponsored by Angela and Allan Weiner. More details about that will be forthcoming, that frequency may reach parts of Europe terrestrially as an early morning show at a tolerable hour. Note however that both broadcasts on 7490 can be "breakfast listening" using the WBCQ.com website or some remote WebSDRs in Eastern Europe, a key target area for the broadcasts from Europe.

I regret the necessity for these changes and hope listeners will find the remaining options on WBCQ usable.
