** U S A. 257 MCW kHz, Feb 4 at 0717 UT, JYR, 25 watt ND beacon at York, Nebraska. Whenever I log this, brings back memories of my total solar eclipse expedition to that area, even tho I was not tuning it at that time.

341 MCW kHz, Feb 4 at 0715 UT, in the continued absence of EI Enid, 25-watt OIN Oberlin KS is the usual sole NDB occupant, but now it`s mixing with seldom-heard DNI, 25 watts at Sherman-Denison TX. Even when EI was operative it was so weak that OIN could also be heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2124 monitoring: confirmed second airing, UT Friday February 4 at 0337 the 0330 on WRMI 5985, aimed south so as usual here JBA vs hi storm and line noise; but at 0343 also JBA to Argentina SDR, S5-S7 to Knoxville but line noise; S4-S6 but less noisy to Maryland; JBA S7-S9 to Missouri SDR; Colombia SDR still receiving nothing; TWR Bonaire still missing; best I can find at 0348 turns out to be the J68HZ SDR in St. Lucia, S7-S9 and less noise than elsewhere. Put on some sandals?

Also confirmed Friday February 4 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, good S8-S9 but seems undermodulated, no jamming audible direct. Maybe my file is undermodulated, but stations ought to boost it to their own level.

BTW, the first airing at 0130 on 5850 was a few seconds short as final edit had not been completed, but my closing was still overridden by WRMI ID break. BTW2, upload to WRMI System F server was completed with only 30 seconds to spare before 0130 with unexpectedly slow ftp transfer, whew. Hot off the `press`! Next:

** VATICAN [and non]. 13830, Feb 4 at 1535, VR Amharic from own SMG site in extraterritorial ITALY, as I pointed out before can be amazingly strong here in the wrong direxion, as typical for this station and can`t help but wonder if their antenna aiming is 180 degrees off! Or at least not restricting radiation off the back. However, yesterday with poor propagation it was not equivalent to 13820 Cuban radio war; today it`s only S5-S8 and with heavy flutter. And also a short/long path echo.

Last time, Jan 10, I computed that the long path at surface level measures 31289 km, resulting in an echo delay of about 1/13 second. This time I inspect my NGS Globe to track the long path: along the west coast of the Red Sea, out of Africa from northern Somalia, across the vast Indian Ocean, way south of Australia, south even of NZ across Auckland Island, across the vast Pacific near Tubuas Islands (as labeled, ever hear of those before? Wikipedia spells Tubuai or Tupua`i), Tuamotu Archipelago, i.e. near Tahiti, Marquesas Islands, Revilla Gigedo, the Mexican Islands which seem to have no other funxion, La Paz, western Texas, to Enid. The VR // 11935 is stronger S9/+10 without flutter.

Further bandscan on 9, 7 and 6 MHz finds all the Chinese and other east Asian signals with Doppler flutter, i.e. unstable frequencies as processed by the disturbed ionosphere. Even NZ 7390 not near any polar path has some flutter at 1545. WWV reports at 1500 Feb 4, K-index of 4 but no storms past or future (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15475.00 USB, Feb 4 at 0343, checking the LU1HLW SDR in Argentina for WOR on 5985, I find it first tuned to 15475.98 USB for LRA36 which I or someone must have last employed it for --- and I am hearing some off-frequency talk! Turns out to be INTRUDING Spanish 2-way in the middle of their summer night, probably nothing to do with Antarctica; also have heard 2-way here before (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Propagation News – 06 February 2022

We had another topsy-turvy week, with lots of good sunspots, but coronal mass ejections or CMEs taking their toll on the ionosphere as well. While the solar flux index did a little better than predicted, with numbers in the 120-130 range, there was bad news on the solar-terrestrial front.

The Kp index was regularly hitting four and even five on Thursday, thanks to CMEs, which depressed MUFs considerably. But things could have been a lot worse. NASA issued a major storm warning after the CME on the 29th of January, with newspapers predicting that visible aurora would be seen across the UK. But, in the end, this amounted to very little and the warning was cancelled.

Despite all this geomagnetic activity there were pearls to be found. Contacts with Hong Kong, China and Australia were all reported by members of the 10 metre UK Net Facebook group. As Jack, G8DX wrote on the group: “What an end to the month. ZL, JA, XV, BY, BV, HS, YB on FT8 and 30-plus VKs on phone and a few on CW.”

And bear in mind that this solar cycle has got a lot further to go, with a predicted sunspot number of more than 100 at its peak in 2025/2026. To give you some idea of what that means, this week it was 65.

Next week there may be some good news. NOAA predicts that the solar flux index could rise to 125, and perhaps even higher. As always, we can probably expect unsettled geomagnetic conditions, with the Kp index predicted to hit four on the 10th.

As always, keep an eye on solarham.com for a more accurate day-to-day update as things can change very quickly.

In terms of propagation highlights, look for openings to Sydney, Australia on 10 metres around 8-10am. Short-path openings to Perth may peak a little later.

VHF and up:

The present spell of unsettled weather is likely to continue for a while, into the first part of next week, but before that, there are signs of the next high building over southern areas. This will bring a return of Tropo conditions to many areas, although a further low will track across northern Britain towards the end of the week.

As we hinted last week, the high pressure produced some good Tropo DX down across Biscay to Spain and France on 2m through to 23cm. The situation next week is looking similar, so a good week to get some CW and SSB onto 70cm for the UK Activity Contest on Tuesday and see what happens on Thursday for the 6m UKAC.

The other modes to check are, like last week, the pre-dawn random meteor scatter options plus a chance aurora in view of the unsettled solar-terrestrial conditions at the moment.

Moon declination is positive and rising all week, so Moon windows are long and peak Moon elevation high. Path losses are also high as we approach apogee on Friday.

For VHF EMEers, 144MHz sky noise is low to moderate throughout the week, peaking at 500 Kelvin on Friday. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Our sun was much more active over the past week, with average daily sunspot number more than doubling from 39.6 in the previous week to 81.3 in the current January 27 – February 2 reporting week.

Geomagnetic indicator average daily Planetary A index changed from 8.3 to 10.1, while average middle latitude A index was unchanged at 6.4.

Predicted solar flux for the near term is 126, 130, and 125 on February 4 – 6; 120 on February 7 – 10; 128 on February 11 – 12; 125 on February 13 – 14; 120 on February 15 – 17; 128 on February 18 – 21; 125 on February 22 – 25; 128 on February 26; 132 on February 27 – 28; 135 on March 1 – 3; 125 on March 4 – 7; 128 on March 8 – 11, and 125 on March 12 – 13.

Predicted planetary A index is 12, 20, 18, and 10 February 4 – 7; 5 on February 8 – 10; 8 on February 11; 5 on February 12 – 16; then 10, 12, 8, and 5 on February 17 – 20; 10, 8, 5, and 8 on February 21 – 24; 12, 8, 5, and 8 on February 25 – 28; 10, 5, and 5 on March 1 – 3; 20 and 12 on March 4 – 5; 5 on March 6 – 8; then 12 and 8 on March 9 – 10; 5 on March 11 – 15, and 10, 12, and 8 on March 16 – 18.

This is the “Weekly Commentary on the Sun, the Magnetosphere, and the Earth’s Ionosphere, February 3, 2022” from F.K. Janda, OK1HH:

“The solar radio flux of 130 and the daily sunspot number up to 100 at the end of January, compared to the equal heliographic length in past solar rotations, showed the unreliability of 27-day quasi-periodicity as the guideline for predictions. The M1 solar flare in AR2936 on January 29 was also a surprise because of the magnetic configuration. On the contrary, it was no surprise that the accompanied LDE, which triggered halo CME, was followed by an intensification of the solar wind and an increase in Earth’s geomagnetic field activity. A major storm was expected on February 2, but it arrived a day later and included major changes in the parameters of Earth’s ionosphere in the form of its positive phase, around 1200 UTC.”

Here is an interesting new Solar Cycle 25 update, thanks to K9LA and K1HTV.

Via Spaceweather.com comes this comment from Dr. Ron Turner of ANSER Research Institute in Virginia, who thinks it may be too early to expect a strong Solar Cycle 25.

This graph shows why Turner is skeptical.

“Solar Cycle 25 is doing something interesting. It is mimicking old Solar Cycle 24 (SC24),” he said. “I took sunspot numbers from the early years of SC24 (the red dashed line) and overlaid them on SC25 [and] they’re an almost perfect match.”

This is significant because Solar Cycle 24 went on to become the weakest solar cycle in a century. Its hot start did not lead to a strong maximum. Turner isn’t saying that Solar Cycle 25 will likewise be a dud. But, rather, “these early sunspot numbers are not enough to guarantee a strong cycle.”

David Moore shared this article in Science Daily about a big solar event more than 9,000 years ago that was discovered via ice core analysis.

Sunspot numbers for January 27 – February 2 were 85, 77, 74, 70, 100, 88, and 75, with a mean of 81.3. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 107.1, 113.4, 125.3, 129.6, 129.5, 128.6, and 128.2, with a mean of 123.1. Estimated planetary A indices were 7, 8, 17, 10, 10, 7, and 12, with a mean of 10.1. Middle latitude A index was 5, 5, 7, 7, 3, 10, and 8, with a mean of 6.4.

WBCQ 4790 kHz Testing Update

That’s not a typo, in addition to its flagship frequency 7490 kHz, WBCQ will be running staggered propagation tests of 4790 kHz during February for a new entertainment program

block sponsored by Angela and Allan Weiner and curated by Uncle Bill Tilford. When the

regular schedule begins in March, it will be 2 hours per night of music and other entertainment from around the world. Several new programs under development will participate when the regular schedule begins.

The February tests will use archival episodes of From the Isle of Music, Uncle Bill’s Melting Pot,

Marion’s Attic, Behavior Night, Rock Wave, Tom Call Theater, a Bluegrass State of Mind and Jetzt Geht’s Los!, a wonderful program from Germany of Weimar-era jazz. In March these programs will be joined by several new ones from around the world.

The first week’s tests will run from February 1-5 from 6-8pm EST (2300-0100 UTC). Each following week will run an hour later to determine optimum transmission times. An eQSL will

be available for reception reports sent to 4790info@gmail.com

For February 6-12, tests will run from 7-9pm EST (0000-0200 EST)

VOA at 80: Selling “the religion of democracy” was Voice of America’s first mission statement

80 years ago, on February 1, 1942, the first Voice of America (VOA) radio broadcast in German may have gone on the air. There is some uncertainty as to the exact date of the first VOA radio transmission, and the programs did not acquire the official Voice of America name until several years later. Selling “the religion of democracy” was Voice of America’s first mission statement. Unfortunately, the early VOA leaders and journalists, many of them pro-Soviet fellow travelers and some Communist Party members, believed that the Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin, was a democrat. They convinced themselves that Soviet communism was a progressive ideology that other countries should accept.

Today, the Voice of America is managed by the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). According to official government employee surveys, USAGM has been for many years the worst federal agency to work for, with the lowest employee morale. What the successive Voice of America management teams never admitted, is that the early VOA broadcasts, while accurate on most news, did not tell the whole truth and endangered the lives of VOA listeners with disinformation. Soviet and other communist propaganda lies in early VOA broadcasts were especially harmful to listeners in East-Central Europe and China.

VOA’s World War II-era fellow travelers claimed that listeners had nothing to fear from Soviet Russia and its totalitarian leader Joseph Stalin, and should not distrust Chinese communists. The CIA reported in the early 1950s that accepting the pro-Soviet propaganda claims promoted by VOA may have caused some people in Czechoslovakia to make decisions that ultimately resulted in their deaths. Early VOA broadcasters, many of them Soviet sympathizers, some of them members of various communist parties, used propaganda to present the Soviet Union as a progressive country and Stalin as a supporter of democracy who, having won the trust of President Roosevelt, should be trusted by the people in East-Central Europe.

No Voice of America director has ever publicly admitted that the first VOA chief news writer and editor was Howard Fast. He was a future recipient of the Stalin International Peace Prize and a Communist Party activist and journalist.

The Voice of America has also never officially admitted that the first VOA director John Houseman was forced to resign after the State Department accused him of being untrustworthy. President Roosevelt’s friend, Under Secretary of State Sumner Welles, secretly warned the White House that Houseman was hiring communists for VOA jobs.

VOA officials have never apologized to listeners for censoring true information about communist atrocities. They have not admitted that those very few anti-communist VOA journalists hired during World War II faced retaliation for expressing their views. One of the refugee VOA broadcasters, Konstanty Broel Plater, resigned in 1944 in protest against Soviet propaganda in VOA programs. A Jewish refugee from Austria, Julius Epstein, lost his job in the Office of War Information (OWI) in 1945.

Almost all the major successes of the Voice of America during the Cold War can be attributed to anti-communist broadcasters, including the legendary Polish anti-Nazi fighter Zofia Korbońska. During the Truman administration and in later years, they replaced the pro-Soviet fellow travelers. But their contributions have been largely ignored. They faced severe discrimination from native-born senior VOA managers in the later decades. VOA was most effective against totalitarianism and propaganda during the Reagan administration.

The Voice of America has changed drastically in the last twenty years. Under its current USAGM management, VOA has been known to create programs that glorify such foreign and American communists as Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Angela Davis. VOA also hired a few broadcasters who previously produced anti-U.S. propaganda for President Putin’s state media in Russia. VOA is increasingly propagandizing to Americans.

USAGM and VOA leadership still has a highly selective institutional memory and resists calls for reform. To mark the Voice of America’s 80th anniversary, I will be reposting in February some of my articles about VOA’s history. (bloggernews.net)

** BRAZIL. 9666.561, Feb 1 at 0656, R. Voz Missionária, nominal 9665, now more than halfway to 9667 from 9666, S3-S6 but VG modulation with music, the main/only? overnite ZY on 31m. Have not noticed them on 5939- lately (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.604, Jan 31 at 2200, UTwente is locking on to an S8 signal here but only hearing tones; it is the exact favorite channel of Radio Cairo.

9899.605v, Feb 1 at 2136, via UXTwente, R. Cairo English is S9+25 but only modulation is occasional scratches and some hum. Something`s always egregious at Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 515 MCW kHz, Feb 1 at 0701 UT, PN, ND beacon at Ponca City, is OFF. Log search indicates last outage briefly had ended on August 16, and always heard since until now. Still off at 2326 check.

Can this be coincidental?: 14 hours earlier there was an earthquake not far away, also felt in Enid, but not by me. USGS: ``Magnitude 4.5 - 7 km NW of Medford, Oklahoma, 2022-01-31 17:10:21 (UTC) 36.851°N 97.794°W 7.9 km depth``. Blamed on disposal wells:

25-watt PN was my strongest beacon, even while 341 EI Enid, and 255 SW Stillwater were on, both still missing; while 350 RG OKC remains. Few other OKies are ever heard, sometimes 267 HET Henryetta.

Another check Feb 2 circa 0245 UT, still no PN - a complete beacon bandscan, still with elevated line noise level about 350-420 kHz, finds hardly anything out of state, just the beefy WG Winnipeg kilowatt dashing in on 248 MCW. This may be due to this WWV info:

** OKLAHOMA. 1640 kHz, Feb 2 at 0250 UT, surprised to hear KZLS Enid with silly ballgame, Tulsa vs Wichita State. KZLS recently started simulcasting with co-owned 96.9 KQOB as ``The Eagle``, but now they are split again, KQOB still with Alex Jones nonsense. I was not aware that either ever broke far-right talk format or ex-rock music, for SBGs, but could easily have missed them (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** PERU. 4810, Feb 2 at 0246, JBA carrier direct, maybe trace of modulation, presumed R. Logos active again. Had been missing from bandscans mostly later at night. LSB required to avoid Martinique STANAG on plus side. At 0326 trying the Duitama, Aguadas, Caldas, Colombia KiwiSDR, but it`s broken again with NO SW signals showing on the H2Ofall but plenty of noise. It was getting WRMI/WOR/9955 just fine 3.5 hours earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960.004, Jan 31 at 2349, via UTwente, VOT is on today VG S9+35 but the transmitter with squeals. 2354 sign-off claiming this has been the 1330-1430 broadcast on 12035. Only fragment of IS before 2355* chopped off air uncovering Chinese mixing with music, but seems one transmission rather than QRM; 2400 timesignal a sesquisecond late as received roundaboutedly.

5960, Feb 1 at 2325, NO signal from VOT direct. Evidently came on later: 2347 check via UTwente, now S9+30/40, good modulation level except for squeal, sign-off reciting entire English schedule and obviously wrong note that the 22-23 & 03-04 are recorded, those being the times they would and will be on in A-seasons. Then to IS which keeps playing after 2356 when German IDs start to be inserted twice a minute: I count six of them; 2400 timesignal mixes with that from CCCCCCI, not quite synchronized; sign-on in German with irrelevant satellite parameters, announcers never aware they are accidentally on SW at this hour. WRMI will broadcast two TRSW programs on a different frequency than originally scheduled on February 7 and February 14. Instead of the programs airing at 0100 UTC on 5950 kHz, the new frequency will be 5010 kHz, same time.

The change will affect two programs: the Radio Igloo Relay on February 7, and The Many Radio Voices of Dr. Tim on February 14.

World Radio Day Focuses on Trust for 2022

This year’s World Radio Day celebrates the trust, accessibility and long-term viability of the radio industry.

Feb. 13, 2022, marks the 11th annual celebration of World Radio Day, which is organized by the United Nations’ UNESCO organization. This year’s theme is “Radio and Trust” in recognition of radio’s standing as one of the most trusted media sources around. Even as various studies reveal a global decline in trust in the internet and social media networks, people continue to see radio as one of the most trustworthy news sources, the organization said.

“Part of people’s trust in radio is due to its low cost and ubiquitous nature,” UNESCO said in a statement about the upcoming World Radio Day. “Despite digitalization being a global tendency, digital access to information is far from being equal with huge differences remaining between regions and between communities.”

Compare that to radio, the organization said, a medium that remains affordable and can be listened to everywhere, even when electricity or connectivity are not reliable. “Radio is thereby one of the most popular means of communications, used by an overwhelming majority of people,” the organization said.

UNESCO suggested in its announcement several themes that can be celebrated on World Radio Day, including trust in radio journalism, the accessibility of radio and the viability of radio stations.

Radio has a key role to play in several areas, UNESCO said, beginning with producing independent and high-quality content, providing information to a diverse group of individuals and working to transform loyal audience engagement into financial stability, especially for small, medium or nonprofit stations.

World Radio Day got its start in 2011 when member states of UNESCO adopted Feb. 13 — the anniversary of the 1946 founding of United Nations Radio — as World Radio Day in an effort to raise greater awareness of the importance of radio, to encourage decision makers to provide access to information via radio and to enhance networking and international cooperation among broadcasters.
