A cuore aperto: Gody 170 (1938)

Mettiamo oggi a cuore aperto questa bella GODY 170, apparecchio francese, risalente al luglio del 1938. Il circuito è il tipico supereterodina 4 valvole più raddrizzatrice, con tre gamma d'onda: lunghe, medie e corte. L'aspetto è particolarmente piacevole grazie alla particolare forma della griglia dell'altoparlante, che ricorda lo stile Decò.

La media frequenza è classicamente su 455 Khz ed è dotata di ben due valvole amplificatrici. I tubi impiegati sono della serie "rossa" o a contatti laterali: ECH 3, EBC 3, EF 9, CY 2 e CBL 5. Mentre le prime tre sono valvole comuni, la raddrizzatrice e la finale bf sono valvole che accendono a 50 volts che, messe in serie con le altre tre, raggiungono la tensione di alimentazione di circa 119 Volts e proprio nell'alimentazione, questa radio ha la sua particolarità: non è provvista di trasformatore di alimentazione ma al suo posto è stata utilizzata una resistenza sotto vuoto, simile ad una valvola, che, dotata di prese variabili che mettono in serie i suoi filamenti interni, provvede ad alimentare l'apparecchio.

Essendo messa in serie, ha un suo preciso valore, che per la 220 volts, è di 60 Ohm. Il calore dissipato da questa resistenza è enorme, circa 250 gradi, tanto che deve essere per forza racchiusa in una scatola metallica dotata di una vera e propria cappa che convoglia il calore fuori dal mobile, pena il vero e proprio incendio del legno.

La sensibilità è molto buona, tanto da poter tranquillamente ricevere le onde corte con antenna interna di circa 5 metri. Il telaio è ben costruito, verniciato e cadmiato il che denota un prodotto di buona qualità, il circuito è ben progettato ed il montaggio è fatto in modo razionale. A proposito del montaggio e del cablaggio, questa radio ha la cosiddetta "massa fantasma" e cioè, nessuno dei componenti è collegato a massa sul telaio ma ad un conduttore comune, sollevato dalla massa metallica, per motivi di isolamento e di presenza di una fase direttamente sul telaio.

La CBL5, finale di BF, espleta anche la funzione di amplificatrice bf e CAV, lasciando spazio ad una ulteriore amplificatrice di MF. Le bobine sono avvolte su supporto ceramico e molto ben realizzate, le medie frequenze sono dotate di compensatori ad aria e non di nuclei e ceramici sono anche i compensatori di accordo delle singole gamme.

La sezione alimentazione ha ben due impedenze; una è quella classicamente utilizzata anche come bobina magnetizzante per l'altoparlante ed un'altra in bassa frequenza, per rendere più pulita possibile la tensione di alimentazione che con una raddrizzatrice monoplacca, poteva dare luogo a ronzio. L'altoparlante, marcato MUSICALPHA, è di buona fattura, con un ottimo rendimento anche sulle frequenze basse.

La sintonia ha una ottima demoltiplica in presa diretta, senza cordini o rinvii. Esiste un modello 170, del tutto identico, che non usa la resistenza ma il classico trasformatore con valvole octal a 6,3 Volts. Di questo, alimentato con questa grossa resistenza, non ho trovato alcuna notizia ma credo fosse stato progettato per alimentazione sia in continua che in alternata.

Il supporto della resistenza comprende anche il cambio tensioni ed il fusibile, interamente in ceramica, è realizzato in bakelite a doppio strato. L'apparecchio può funzionare con quattro diverse tensioni tra 110 e 240 volts.

Raccomandazione: in molti apparecchi francesi, alimentati tramite resistenze ad alta dissipazione di calore, veniva utilizzato AMIANTO!! Attenzione allo strato biancastro, simile a cartone spesso, che si può trovare intorno a queste resistenze. Non tentate di toglierlo, maneggiarlo o pulirlo in alcun modo. Va incapsulato usando mascherina e guanti, possibilmente all'aperto, e portato in un centro di raccolta o discarica comunale.

All'atto della ricezione, l'apparecchio dimostra ancora una ottima sensibilità e buona selettività; la risposta audio è buona e fedele. Spero sia stato interessante vedere questo sistema di alimentazione così particolare.

** U S A. (7489.9v), UT Sat Jan 1 at 0100, WBCQ webcast with `AAAWWW`, but Allan`s initial comments sound familiar: picking nose, toilet paper, Angela taking horse-riding lessons. Yes, it`s a rerun so tune-out by 0105. From mid-north Indiana, John Carver agrees:

``For what it's worth, Glenn. 4790 and 6160 are carrying Brother Scare tonight instead of Allan's show. Signal from 7490 went to hell about half way through the program. Impossible to copy now. I still believe tonight's program is a rerun. John, Old and in the way`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4840, Jan 1 at 0736, S9+30/40 of dead air except for some hum on this WWCR, while the others are OK, 3215, 5890, 5935. This happens again and again. Is anyhuman present at 1300 WWCR Avenue overnight? That would seem to be prudent with 4 x 100 kW SW and 1 x 50 kW MW transmitters running. The place burned down once before, or was it twice? If so, dozing or not paying attention. However, no loss with repugnant programming, mostly dead Brother Scare or dead Gene Scott (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 485.9 kHz, Jan 1 at 0725 UT, JBA carrier direct, perhaps the Fessenden experimental special from Forest VA, WI2XLQ, during final 24-hour broadcast to end at 2000 UT Jan 1. Not trying harder to hear it now, since I definitely had it last week via closer remote at Bakersville NC, about 310 km = 192 statute miles away. (Distancefromto.net is screwed, insisting that Forest VA is in San Antonio TX or the UK, so I measure Lynchburg VA instead). Lots of IRCA MW DXers were trying to hear it this week. Here and I expect far beyond, there are storm crashes from a line running from SE OK thru AR into KY, much like the Xmas tornado track (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

The latest monitoring observations show that the following SW stations of All India Radio that were heard very well till yesterday are absent today 1 January 2022. This tallies with the various media reports that some old transmitters of AIR stations were being shut down from yesterday.

2. New Delhi (250 kW) 6030, 6100 kHz

3. Srinagar (50 kW) 4950, 6110 kHz

Also the Mumbai (50 kW) Vividh Bharti transmitter on 1188 kHz is noted off air recently

In 2022, the British Broadcasting Corporation is marking 100 years of broadcasting.  The BBC staff amateur radio club, The Ariel Radio Group, was established in 1945 and there has been some form of ham radio club at the BBC ever since.  The current team, the London BBC Radio Group, have secured the callsign GB100BBC to help in the celebrations.  GB100BBC will be on air from the main shack at BBC Broadcasting House in central London, from other BBC premises and members' home QTHs around the UK.  We are indebted to Ofcom, the UK regulator, which has permitted the callsign to be used for the entirety of 2022.

EARLY BBC HISTORY The British Broadcasting Company (as it was then called) was founded on 18th October 1922 by a group of wireless manufacturers.  The Marconi Company was one of the group.  A broadcasting studio was constructed within Marconi House on The Strand, London.  The medium-wave transmitter was housed in the same building, with antennas on the roof.  The station was allocated the callsign 2LO.

At 5:33pm on 14th November 1922, regular programming commenced, with a mixture of news, music, drama and talks.  Programmes were initially broadcast for just a few hours a day.  By 1926 the transmission power had increased to 3kW when an improved transmitter was established with antennas on the roof of Selfridges department store in London.  The studios were located at Savoy Hill.  Several regional transmitters were installed around the UK, carrying the same programming.  The public were required to purchase a radio receiving licence, costing ten shillings per annum.  That equates to about £60 in today's currency.

In 1927, the British Broadcasting Corporation was established by Royal Charter and a Director-General, Sir John Reith, was appointed.

In November of the same year, Marconi used his Chelmsford base to make experimental Empire Broadcasts on 11750kHz using the callsign G5SW and with a power of 12kW.  In 1930, King George V spoke to the whole British Empire from the House of Lords via the Chelmsford transmitting system and 9510kHz was added.

By 1932, the BBC had outgrown the Savoy Hill studios and a purpose-built centre was commissioned.  Broadcasting House opened in May, with many architectural features created by the modernist designers of the day.  The Empire Service was formally inaugurated that December with programmes from the new centre.

In November 1936, the BBC started its television service with studios and a transmitter located at Alexandra Palace, a high point in north London that looked down over much of the city.  It didn't last long.  On 1st September 1939, at the outbreak of war, it was closed down with no official explanation but it has been speculated that authorities were worried that the strong broadcast signal could act as an aid to enemy aircraft.  The last programme to be viewed was Mickey Mouse's Gala Premiere.  When TV returned in June 1946, the same Mickey Mouse programme was the first thing to be aired!

The BBC commenced foreign language radio broadcasting in January 1938 with a programme in Arabic.  This was soon followed by many more languages.  In 1941, the BBC External Services were transferred to their own building, Bush House.

Czech Radio stopping long, medium wave broadcasting at midnight

Czech Radio (Český rozhlas) will stop broadcasting on long and medium wave as of midnight on Friday. Their stations will be available via DAB + as well as on the internet.

Until now, the public broadcaster's Dvojka and Plus stations could be heard on medium wave, and the Radiožurnál station also on long wave.

DAB + digital signal expands the range of services and covers 95 percent of the Czech Republic.

Direct link is: http://uk4-vn.mixstream.net:8104/index.html?sid=1 I am ``1 of 50 listeners, listener peak: 6``, whatever that mean. Jen did a count-up, rather than -down for 2200 UT = 2022y in [part of] Africa, but her clock was 2 minutes slow at least via the web. Continuous stereo music since including something Horn-of-Africa-ish. Spot chex past 2330 still hear music only. She is going to conclude with a Unique Radio DX test, much like US MW stations with various distinctive sounds, 0900-1000 UT January 1, in four quarter-hour segments (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 12000, Dec 31 at 0700, S5-S6 of JBA English with whine, 2 x 6000 RHC. 6000 itself is S9+20 with same pitch whine but JBM, until chopped off at 0701.5*. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. At 2220 UT Dec 31 I posted: ``[WOR] *2022 in Spain --- REE Spain usually has quite a NY celebration before and after 23 UT. I suppose the token English will be skipped, 9690, 11670, 11940 and/or 12030. Glenn``

9690 is by far best into Virginia SDR when I start listening at 2240, much better than 12030 and just detectable on 11940, 11670. Radio Nacional is being relayed, pop music, greetings from celebrities; 2300 chimes, cheers and explosions, ``Feliz 2,022``; could hear someone speaking English in background. 2304 song ``Año Nuevo de Esperanza``; 2317 playing an archive NY greeting from someone in 1963, more peppy music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5000, Dec 31 at 2359, mandatory monitoring of WWV up to ``zero hours, zero minutes, Coordinated Universal Time`` and full top-of hour ID after 0000 UT January 1, 2022, but no mention of the true Jahrwechsel. Must do it again at 0600 when it`s local midnight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2118 monitoring: in last report the UT Thursday Dec 30 at 0130 logs were of course still the last repeats of WOR 2118, not yet 2119 as typoed.

WORLD OF RADIO 2119 monitoring: confirmed UT Friday December 31 at 0330 on WRMI 5985: as usual here their weakest signal, JBA and theme barely recognizable vs noise level; Virginia SDR gets S9+10/15 with adjacent jamming splash from 5980. TWR Boa Vista S9+5/15 including high noise level making it JBA. Knoxville TN SDR is best, only S6/S9 but less noise.

Also confirmed Friday December 31 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S9/+10 direct, no jamming audible.

Also confirmed Friday December 31 at 1915.4 on IRRS via AM Italia, 918 kHz, Villa Estense, S9+10 into nearby Noale SDR, above CCI from La Inter, Madrid. As usual I tuned in earlier also to SW // 7290 via Bulgaria. VP at 1900 S7-S8 into UTwente and seemed just barely modulated with `Feature Story News`; LSB required to minimize ChiCom ACI splash from 7295. Instead of UN News and other talk, 1905-1915 played some Xmas music; at 1925 WOR is S5-S6, too much splash to listen on narrow AM or AM Synch, so I move out to a better skip distance, west Iceland, better S5-S7 on SAL mode, complete to 1944.

Also confirmed Fri Dec 31 at 2130.5 on AM Italia 918 kHz again, S9+10 over the CCI, after unknown talk show chopped off at 2130 for IRRS ID. Recheck at 2157, 918 is already off the air! So at least two minutes of WOR chopped off instead of only one last time. Now La Inter, Madrid is atop 918. Next:

** U S A. 1130, Dec 28 at 2158 UT, very strong plug for ``LSU sports station``, so KWKH Shreveport LA, skywaving while still on 50 kW day power and non-direxional pattern, way over the open carrier from KLEY.
