** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Sept 4, continued from last report of LRA36, still running at 1714 UT via Brasil remote: mostly music, still past 1827, 1859, but cuts off at 1907* after another song is over (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 382-MCW, Sept 5 at 0611 UT, ND beacon dash and YPL, JBA, which is 1000 watts from Pickle Lake, Ontario.

366-MCW, Sept 5 at 0612 UT, NDB dash and YMW, 500 watts from Maniwaki, Quebec.

362-MCW, Sept 5 at 0613 UT, NDB dash and SB, 500 watts from Greater Sudbury, Ontario (how is that different from Lesser Sudbury?) (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000 & 6060 & 6165, Sept 5 at 0555, all three RHC English are splattering plus/minus 10 kHz; overdriven modulation from the studio? 6060 also with its humbuzz; 6100 off, 5040 Spanish. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, Sept 5 at 1926, no signal on RHC English frequency; again, she`s on 15370 instead, but after a few words stops modulating tho S9 carrier stays on. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 25800, Sept 5 at 1505, no signal from RFI in Swahili, into RSA and Kuwait SDRs, despite RFI registering 11m this hour only effective today starting what used to be the S-season. The only major broadcaster bold enough to MUF itself up already. Instead, still JBA on 21690. Will they really get around to QSY tomorrow? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** JAPAN. 18119-USB, Sept 4 at 2115, JR7#TG, contacting a W9 et al., JBA and not sure about one of his letters, R? No such station at qrz.com, but definitely starts with JR7, around sunrise in Japan. A couple of other unID phonehams up the band (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 5960, UT Sun Sept 5 at 0100, The Mighty KBC reactivated here via Nauen, GERMANY, ex-9925 summer frequency for past quadrimonth; UT Sundays at 0000-0200 to N America, should stay on 5960 until next May. From Nov should again confront German overrun from Turkey CCI. VG S9+10/20 but seems more fading than we had on 9925 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. An hour earlier I wasn`t hearing any, but by 0122 UT Sun Sept 5, I have four pirates at once, and then a fifth, as they love to run on Saturday nights, especially holiday weekend. Too much to track them all, but this is what I get, plus later HFU uplooks:

6960-USB, Sept 5 at 0122, pirate music. Many reports here of WDOG, but before 0119: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,85947.15.html

6950-USB, Sept 5 at 0122, pirate music. Several reports here of R. Genix, but mostly before 0100: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,85952.0.html

6930-AM, Sept 5 at 0123, JBA pirate music. No reports of a 6930-AM at HFU, but a few minutes earlier of Radio 48 on 6930-USB: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,85954.0.html

6925-AM, Sept 5 at 0124, stronger than 6930, pirate music, 0125 announcement, 0126 ``This is Radio Station SSN [??? or similar]``. Repetitive vamping music and ``Please stand by, broadcast will begin in one minute``, but in less than a minute cuts off the air, and no soon return. These logs say it was X-FM on 6925, which moved to 6285-USB at 0127; how did they know? ``RH`` later said that among: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,85955.0.html

6935-USB, Sept 5 at 0129, this one has just come on, pirate music; 0132 a countdown, otherwise unreadable announcement; 0137 ``Radio for You`` seems like ID and again at 0141, music. Several logs here after 0149 first as unID, then as Radio 48: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,85959.0.html

At 0142 when I quit, all these except 6925 are still going, never mind competition from WBCQ, Mighty KBC or WTWW (Glenn Hauser,OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 7, KOCO ``5`` OKC is marginal at first but catches my ears at 1530 UT Sunday Sept 5 as a church choir is singing showtunes! And not a mask in sight. Turns out to be ``St Luke`s on Broadway`` live? from the major United Methodist Church in OKC, once frequented by some of my uncles & aunts. Shortly preacher launches into long sermon past 1600, somehow centered on Angela Lansbury. By 1610 he mentions Jerry Orbach per captioning; I am not auditioning. 1615 back to tune, ``Beauty & the Beast``; they also have a small instrumental ensemble (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2102 monitoring: confirmed Sat Sept 4 from 1800.5 on IRRS SW 7290 Bulgaria, S9+5/15 into UTwente; tuned in too late to track the runup to this transmission. UTw is not hearing 918 kHz Italy relay, only music presumably Spain. But 918 is also confirmed, Italia AM, Villa Estense, S9+25 into nearby Noale remote, a few seconds apart from 7290.

Missed checking WA0RCR, 1860-AM, circa 1930 Sept 4; anyone hear it?

Confirmed UT Sun Sept 5 from 0334 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, Wentzville MO, S9+20 into neighborly Warrenton SDR atop some storm crashes, a line across the SE corner of MO extending from central OK per Blitzortung.

Once again there are no US SWBCs of WOR between 0130 UT Sat and 2230 UT Sun; stations pick the times, not me. For timely info, I strongly suggest you try to catch one of the first two airings on WRMI, UT Fri 0130 or UT Sat 0130; or, shhh! pod- or webcast ASAP. Next:

2000 UT Sunday IRRS 918-Italy
2230 UT Sunday WRMI 5950 to NE [new]
2230 UT Sunday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0030 UT Monday WRMI 7730 to WNW
0300vUT Monday WBCQ 6160v Area 51 to WSW [NOT Sunday, was error]
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

One may also contribute by MO or check in US funds on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun Sept 5 at 0020, theatre organ music already on WTWW-2: but soon at 0021 a 3-minute hard-sell commercial by Ted; is he now inserting ads in Theater Organ Under The Arch? I guess not, Bob Heil then starts the real show at 0024 which runs unscathed until 0053. This week it`s inconvenient to listen to $tereo webcast, so I stay with SW which is not too distorted but totally mono (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Hepburn Tropo map shows big Level-5 blob across southern KS into OK, and even Level-6 centred on Enid. TV bandscan Sept 5 at 1513 UT finds two decoding: RF 15, KSNW ``3`` Wichita, and RF 31, KDCU ``31`` Derby with Univision. Also BAD signals on RF: 10, 12, 20, 21, 28, 30, 34, 35; By 1607. 15 and 31 have Baddened, plux a few others, 8, 11 and 26; mostly correlating with Wichita market (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6948-AM, Sept 5 at 0535, JBA carrier S3-S6. Could it be --- Radio 48? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs September 4, 2021

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Sat Sept 4 at 1505, LRA36 is back! After a month away, good S5-S4 into Brasil remote with Antártida theme song as I intune, more and more songs until 1542 ``a partir de este momento`` as if signing-on, multilingual IDs including English just to inform us that the broadcast is in Spanish; historical talk about Mendoza and San Martín, subject of today`s `El Lejano Sur` program, i.e. not about Antarctica at all, per se. 1544 Anta. song again; 1545 produxion credit for this `Wednesday` show; current? weather: low -26 C, can`t copy the high. Contact info including whatsapp, phone, correo, etc. 1551 QRM? from some beeps and tones, V only briefly. 1556 `Nacional, la Radio Pública` ID; 1613 ID and contact info again, more of same past 1654 Anta. song again; and still past 1714, but since 1606 I`m mainly listening to `The Score` cinemusic on KUCO, and then the opera.

Meanwhile, I see that Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain had posted this at 1302: ``The LRA 36 team informed via whatsapp that they will be on air today Saturday, 15476usb, at 1400 hours after they fixed the fault they had in the station antenna`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 340-MCW kHz, Sept 4 at 0648 UT, dash and YY, no QRM from 341 EI Enid still off; 500 watts from Mont Joli, Québec, 2761 km = 1715 statute miles; far beyond Québec city on the Gaspé. Only other Canadian, common 332 QT Thunder Bay. Also several closer Unitedstatesians logged in this session, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 6754-USB, Sept 4 at 0244, 0247, 0254, 0307 chex, no VOLMET signal from Trenton Military, CHR. On WOR 2102 I mention that day frequency 15034-USB is not being heard unlike night frequency; but now it`s gone too. It would seem that a single transmitter serve both when operable, but EiBi, where SSB is never specified, shows a schedule overlap: 6754 at 2310-1100, 15034 at 1010-2400. Did anyone ever hear both of them at same time between 2310-2400, or 1010-1100? Or do those numbers allow for irregular switchover times. Also, didn`t the ``schedule`` include regular hourly breaks like some other VOLMETS, rather than continuous? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 11650, Sept 4 at 1428, Chinese opera? off-key singing, and talk; scheduled this hour is CRI in Amoy via Kunming. Poor with flutter. No CNR1 jammers heard now around 11 or 13 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 338-MCW, Sept 4 at 0649 UT, ND beacon TU, which is 30 watts from TUlsa, seldom heard and wonder if operable only sporadically. I was tuned to 336-USB. See also CANADA and USA (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF-7, UT Sept 4 at 0433, only BAD signal from KOCO ``5``, OKC ABC ``local``, not enough to decode via STB nor direct into Sanyo screen; same problem yesterday. Other OKC TVs normal, mostly UHF. Must be on reduced power unless my antenna have broken; no, by 1645 UT Sept 4, back in sufficiently, altho signal meter shows not full strength (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A. Some ND beacons again audible, amid storm crashes from Kansas, fortunately not enough of those to overlap into continuous:

293-MCW, Sept 4 at 0652 UT, FBY, 25 watts at Fairbury, Nebraska, a regular in the winter, not heard summerly for months

338-MCW, TU Tulsa: see OKLAHOMA 340-MCW, YY Quebec: see CANADA

347-MCW, Sept 4 at 0647 UT, AFK, 25 watts from Nebraska City NE (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, Sept 4 at 1427, HIFER beacon K6FRC IDs repeated vs CODAR, 1.8 milliwatts from Patterson CA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2102 monitoring; next:

** U S A. 600, WBOB, Jaxonvil FL with a last-minute DX test from 0400 UT Sat Sept 4: report sent about an hour later:

``Hi WBOB: Tnx for the DX test. I listened for the first few minutes after 0400 UT, both on my R75 with E-W longwire and on my rotatable DX-398, where WMT dominated as usual, and nulling it, mostly KTBB in Texas. I might have detected your code IDs or sweeps, but I did definitely get your DX test in 2016, so instead I went online and tried some remote KiwiSDRs: the ones in Orlando and Tampa are deaf! Nothing on 600, could you believe it. However I am hearing it loud and clear via the one in Woodstock, Georgia. I want to hear what you are doing even if it`s not `DX` via the remote.

So tonight`s details are via GA, and not direct! --- 0429 sweeps, S9+25 and dominating 600; 0433 announcement with reverb, to be on for a couple hours, 50 kW day pattern. E mail bobtx@protonmail.com - old school audio processing except for the reverb. On for another hour or so; ``WBOB, Jacksonville, testing`` and music. 0441 about the audio equipment which seems to be the original reason for the test. Got an email from Broward county; mentions WMT, what is identity of the wobbler ruining WWL 870? --- It`s certainly one of the Cuban transmitters. Three are listed on 870, but no one seems to know which. Radio Reloj network, and one of the others provides the timesignal beeps also to be heard.

0453 VVV VVV VVV DE WBOB WBOB WBOB + several more lost count before K and back to music.

Of course it`s no big deal to pick up WBOB in Georgia, altho I would not mind a QSL.

However, I would be more interested in a QSL for my DX report of your test in *2016* when I really heard it direct to Enid OK. This is my report of it then: I don`t recall whether I also sent it to WBOB at that time. Times as always UT, in winter of course 5 hours ahead of EST rather than 4 hours ahead of EDT now:

from 2016!!:
** U S A. 600, Jan 10 at 0545 UT on the R75 [from Brandon] with E/W longwire, first check for the WBOB Jacksonville FL DX test which started at 0500 UT. Really too much WMT on this antenna, so switch to DX-398 nulling WMT IA as much as possible, i.e. aiming SE instead of ESE, which leaves a mix of Cuba and who knows what. Soon I hear Morse code spelling out JACKSONVILLE, so I could stop right there; 0549 UT sweep tones; 0550 UT rising beeps, phone-off-hook pulses; 0554 UT fire alarm siren & bells; very slow Morse spelling out WBOB a few times; 0555 UT phone-off-hook; 0557 UT WBOB in Morse many times; 0558 UT sweeps upward; 0559 UT beeps upward; 0600 UT phone-off-hook; 0603 UT fire alarm; 0605 UT I hear a voice mention Jacksonville, but suspect it was coincidental at end of Fox ``news`` from WMT; etc., etc. Tnx for the test, reportedly with 35 kW non-direxional day power and ND pattern rather than 9.5 kW out into the Atlantic normally at night (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

BTW, I also DXed some FM stations in the Jax area this summer, by sporadic E. Maybe some/one of them related to WBOB? I could also send a detailed report of those.

Thanks and best wishes,

Glenn Hauser

One minute after sending this, I hear my name mentioned on the air at 0503! But does not refer to what I wrote. Nice selexion of music too, tho I did not note the details.

Further log details: 0441 discussing audio equipment; email from Broward, mentions WMT as another great station; quoting me about the wobbler from Cuba. 0444 CW ID again VVV DE WBOB with repetitions. 0505 says objective is to go to all-tube-type audio chain avoiding digital distortion. But are they still a talk station? 0518 CW ID, 0529 sweeps and VVVs; 0535 `Stairway to Heaven`. 0543 mentions 33 rpm records? 0545 about to close with Sandy Patty`s `Star Spangled Banner`, but when she goes into an extra verse with lyrix I don`t recognize, she is cut off at 0548, more CW IDs. 0549 only snippets of other tunes: Rhapsody in Blue for less than a minute; 0550, 0551 others, ``In the Mood``. 0600 VVV DE WBOB IDs again, but still more music, Edith Piaf doesn`t regret anything, and it`s time for me to tune out.

At 0557 I followed up to WBOB: ``Tnx for mentioning me one minute after I sent the email. I`ve also enjoyed your musical selections, but did not note down the details. I see in FCC info the only FM in Jax under same ownership is the 102.3 translator, I suppose of WBOB. Not sure if you have gone back to night facilities; the signal seems to have weakened into Georgia with more interference by 0555 UT, still music. Regards, Glenn Hauser, OK`` No reply to my mail by 1700 UT.

Checking FCC listings, WBOB is owned by Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting; the only FM they own licensed to Jax is a 102.3 translator, does not show if it relay WBOB (AM).

FCC AM Query has been very slow-loading lately. Previous calls of WBOB in reverse order: WBWL, WPDQ, WOKV back to 1981y. The DX host mentioned pulling music out of the dormant WPDQ record library. All this certainly a great improvement over WBOB normal format as of last year`s NRC AM Log: ``The Answer`` = far-right talk like 660 Dallas. This must be pre-empting `Red Eye Radio` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6885-AM, UT Sat Sept 4 at 0242, JBA carrier, maybe trace of music, also at 0303, pirate? But nothing reported tonight on HF Underground. I had a similar log on Aug 21 UT Sat (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 11690-11695-11700, Sept 4 at 1429, sounds like DRM noise. EiBi shows VOA Khmer via Philippines, not DRM, at 1330-1430. However, CNR1 Digital, CHINA is on 11695 at 0055-0900 so maybe that running a bit late, from Dongfang, Hainan as Aoki agrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs September 3-4, 2021

** CUBA. 10715, Sept 3 at 2214, a few Spanish numbers alternating with digital blaaaps, spy number station as regularly scheduled but seldom noted here. EiBi shows 2154-2257 on days 1357 = M/W/F/Sun (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 12030, Sept 3 at 2210 UT, around here, very wideband distorted FM blob, but I make out a KOFM ID in passing, and then confirm the music is // my Enid local on 103.1, also at 2219. This is happening only with the Wellbrook loop antenna; gone when switching to internal shortwire. Previously I had 12030 FM spurblob here matching 11780 RNA Brasil which is also on now; that was just as certain then as KOFM source is now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 11940, Sept 3 at 2208, this SNR frequency for S America is still AWOL including during token English Friday semihour. 17855 to N America still holding up well, S9/+20, about Venice Film Festival. clips in Italian. 15520 is S2-S4 and modulating, about the same on 11670, all monitored direct.

[and non] At 2312, 15520 is off as scheduled, 11670 now occupied by S9+20 of dead air from CUBA, 11940 is still AWOL, but should remain until 0200* like 17855, the only one left (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7489.9v), UT Sat Sept 4 at 0000, WBCQ webcast with `AAAWWW`; not even checking SW frequencies but Allan says they are only trimulcasting on 7490, 6160, 4790, as he couldn`t get 3265 to come on when he tried at 2345, unknown why it`s getting no AC, and no time to mess with it now, maybe a fuse blew?

The $245K plate amplifier tube from France has arrived. Continental will be coming next week to test it before installing in the SuperStition. The crate alone must have cost $1K. It was well packed with a tip indicator, which shows it was also carefully handled in shipping. Complains that can`t get people in to do antenna work no matter how much the pay. 2 megawatt Diesel generator has also needed maintenance for two years. Blames government for unemployment compensation. Electricity cost has doubled since WBCQ started in 1998, but airtime rates remain as then, not even raised for inflation; roughly $50/hour, should be $200+.

0022, caller from Toronto with news that CHML 820 in Hamilton has flipped to comedy format. [NO, 820 is CHAM; CHML is on 900! -- gh]; discussing formats and whether there is really any demand for comedy; 0026 mulling future of AM & FM; noting that Switzerland is keeping FM a little longer until 2024 when everything goes DAB. 0033 caller from Durango CO, ``Ravvashoe``? 0037 starts reading cold some items from new Free Radio Weekly just in, including mine about ``Lode`` Radio, MRI classical and YHWH.

0039 Bill in Ohio interrupts as another caller. Points out that unlike most cars, the Toyota Prius has VG AM radio engineered so car computer noise itself is avoided. 0045 resumes FRW items. 0047 caller requests some music, ``It`s a Beautiful World`` by Devo. This is not a music request show, but will make an exception and play that for him next week. 0053 stream craps out as usual at this exact time, why? I restart it. Don`t blame White people for slavery: everybody did it back in the day. 0058 prayer, and off by 0100 in time to hear Hal Turner theme. John Carver`s version:

``Tonight's show started on time on 4790, 6160 and 7490. Allan and Angela in the studio. Allan went out to check why 3265 wouldn't come up before the show started and said it wasn't getting any AC power. Didn't have time to tear into it then. The next talk was about a new tube that showed up at the station. I'm assuming it's the new tube for the superstation but I've been fielding a lot of telephone calls this evening. They went on at length about how the tube was packed and how sturdy and high tech the crate was.

Phone call at 0022 from Canada talking about radio formats. Phone call at 0033 from a long time listener whose name I can't spell. Reading of the new Free Radio Weekly began at 0038 and was interrupted a minute later by a phone call. Starts reading the Free Radio Weekly again at 0045 and a phone call at 0048 from Kracker. Into reading of the emails at 0051 and closing prayer at 0058 and off the air at 0100. John, Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6765-USB, Sept 3 at 2317, 5HF in contact with unheard 5IS; MARS net? Soon fuller ID as NN5HF, or is it NNN5HF? Then digital blaaps (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Lawmakers, media groups call on Biden administration to help evacuate journalists at risk of Taliban retribution

Sept. 2, 2021 3:58 pm ET

WASHINGTON—Lawmakers and media organizations are calling on the Biden administration to help get more than 100 government-funded media employees out of Afghanistan, where they risk retribution from the Taliban for their affiliation with the U.S. government.

Combined with their family members, the number of workers for Voice of America and the Afghan branch of Radio Free Liberty/Radio Europe left behind totals more than 500, according to lawmakers who have asked President Biden to ensure that they get out of the country safely. The media staffers, who aren’t U.S. citizens, are contractors, unlike their colleagues in the U.S., who work directly for the U.S. government.

“We were working on their safe evacuation just as the attack struck the airport perimeter,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said Thursday. “Unfortunately, it stood in the way of our ability to bring these individuals to safety before Aug. 31. But I am telling you, we have told them that we have a commitment to these individuals.”

Voice of America and Radio Free Liberty/Radio Europe operate under the U.S. Agency for Global Media, an independent agency of the U.S. government. The two media outlets and others run by the agency are charged with providing “unbiased news and information in countries where the press is restricted.” Though funded by U.S. taxpayers, the outlets are designed to operate free from editorial interference from the government, rather than as a tool of U.S. public diplomacy.

Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said only 50 personnel hired by the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA and RFE/RL, were evacuated from Afghanistan, and those were due to the efforts of U.S. allies rather than Washington. About 140 reporters, editorial assistants and other workers remain, plus their families, a congressional aide said.

“It is absolutely disgraceful that the U.S. State Department claimed they evacuated their local employees when in reality they abandoned hundreds of USAGM journalists and their families,” Mr. McCaul said. “Some of these journalists were given express assurances by the Biden administration that they would be treated as locally employed staff—but were not.”

Dozens of lawmakers from both parties last month called on Mr. Biden to help the U.S.-affiliated journalists get out, saying they “have been and will continue to be a target for the Taliban due to their association with the United States government.”

The Taliban seized control of Afghanistan more rapidly than intelligence officials expected. Here’s a look at the nine days that sealed the group’s yearslong takeover. Illustration: Laura Kammermann

“We are incredibly disappointed that our efforts over the past few weeks to get our colleagues safe passage out of Afghanistan have been unsuccessful,” said Yolanda Lopez, acting director of Voice of America, adding that “we have been working day and night, pursuing every available option, only to hit countless obstacles and roadblocks.”

Hundreds of journalists hired by U.S.-based news organizations, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post, managed to get out of Afghanistan, thanks to help from their media organizations and U.S. officials. But many local journalists working for Afghan publications, including reporters who have faced threats, have been unable to leave, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, which has documented recent cases of the Taliban attacking reporters.

Propagation News – 5 September 2021

Well, NOAA got the solar flux index prediction wrong last week. The SFI actually ended up higher than the prediction, thanks to active region 2860, which grew as the week went on. NOAA also issued a G1, or Minor, and G2, or Moderate, geomagnetic storm watch for the 1st and 2nd of September, just days after two CMEs occurred on the 28th of August. The first was associated with an M4 X-ray flare, or R1-Minor Radio Blackout. The second CME was associated with a filament eruption. As of 1800 on Thursday it looks like this may have been over cautious as no disturbance had occurred. Active region 2863 has now rotated into view, but on Thursday it still looked quite small and non-threatening.

There are signs of HF propagation improving as we move to more autumnal ionospheric conditions. Antoine, 3D2AG and Dominik, 3D2USU in Fiji were both logged on 17 metres this week and ZS1OIN in South Africa was noted on 15 metres. Chris, G3SJJ reports working Chile on 15 and 20 metres, along with Uruguay, Peru and Puerto Rico on 20m.

The equinoxes are typically very good for North-South paths so we can expect conditions to improve as the month wears on. Propquest shows that the maximum usable frequency over a 3,000km path is generally struggling to reach 18MHz during the day.

Next week NOAA predicts the SFI will decline into the low 80s, due to a lack of serious sunspot activity. It also predicts a maximum Kp index of two. However, a large equatorial coronal hole was Earth-facing on Thursday, so we may expect a geomagnetic disturbance and higher Kp index across this weekend, due to the incoming plasma from the high-speed solar wind.

VHF and up propagation news:

The prolonged spell of high pressure weather has produced some strong lift conditions across the country and surrounding seas. Unfortunately, it seems the high will probably suffer some knocks during the coming week and there will be some rain or showers. However, there is a good chance the high will fight back, to some extent, and there may be further Tropo periods during the week. The rain events are unreliable with marked changes in outcome from run to run of the forecast models, but may provide occasional opportunities for rain scatter on the GHz bands.

The main Sporadic-E season has pretty much finished and, although occasional outliers can still provide activity into September, the events may be very brief. Of course, random meteor scatter and auroral propagation modes are always possible. For one reason or another, it is good to periodically check the VHF/UHF beacons; they are there for this very purpose. Perhaps now is a good time to update your VHF/UHF beacon list by looking at the real time, updated lists at www.beaconspot.uk to ensure you are there for the next chance opening!

Random meteor activity is still high and there is just one small meteor shower again this week. The September Epsilon-Perseids have a low Zenithal Hourly Rate of five. It is active from the 5th to the 21st of September, reaching a maximum on the 9th at 1100 UTC.

Moon declination goes negative again on Wednesday so we’ll have decreasing peak elevations shortening Moon visibility windows. It reaches perigee on Saturday so path losses will be getting lower all week. (rsgb.org)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6969-USB, UT Fri Sept 3 at 0242, pirate mostly talk with 2 or 3 guys chatting, rapidly, poorly enunciated and a hard time figuring out what they are talking about, but F-bombs and S-bombs every few seconds! Yet one manages a big word, ``neuro-linguistic``. Maybe a call-in over phones? Bits of wild ``music`` here and there such as 0249.5. S9+20/30. I wonder if the frequency choice convey a secret implication? 0303 discussing computers. 0308 muse about ``trying to get on all SW frequencies``; eQSL from L0DE@L0DE.com sounds like, and that 0 = zero, mentions HF Underground. 0311 disjointed music to 0314.7* Many reports here as: ``L0de Radio Hour 6969 USB 0113 UTC 3 September 2021`` https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,85862.0.html L0DE.com is a real Not Secure website, leading to numerous audios of previous broadcasts of Nov/Dec 2018 tho I`d never heard it nor heard of it before. Maybe this replayed one of them (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 11840, Fri Sept 3 at 1454, I run across the intonations of Josiah, anti-Christ pirate Station YHWH, but unreadable as S7-S9 equals the high local line noise level I still suffer from. Seems he is often on 11840 in the mornings. Previously with good signal into Alberta remote, not checked today (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PERU. 4810, Sept 3 at 0628, JBA music audible on LSB only vs STANAG on plus side, still confronting CODAR, presumed R. Logos, Chazuta (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PHILIPPINES. 9410, Sept 3 at 1501 tune-in to dead air, and off in a few seconds. Scheduled 1400-1500 is VOA Korean via Tinang; before and after for many hours on 9410, various BBC languages and sites (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SAO TOME. UNID 4960, Sept 3 at 0340, S9/+10 of open carrier, VOA Sao Tome? Not scheduled in HFCC & EiBi until 0400-0500 English daily, 0500-0530 Hausa daily, 0530-0600 French M-F, 0700-0730 Hausa daily; 2030-2100 Hausa daily, all 100 kW at 30 degrees. The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Solar activity is on the upswing this week. Average daily sunspot numbers increased from 21.7 to 50.6, with a high of 77 last Saturday, September 28. Average daily solar flux rose from 78.5 to 88.

Average daily planetary A index increased from 4.7 to 9.6, and average daily middle latitude A index went from 5.7 to 10.7. Geomagnetic activity peaked August 27 – 28 due to a coronal mass ejection.

New sunspot regions appeared on August 26 and 27, and on September 2 Spaceweather.com reported, “New Sunspot, Rapidly Growing” to announce the emergence of AR2863.

Predicted solar flux looks promising, particularly after mid – September, at 85 and 82 on September 3 – 4; 80 on September 5 – 6; 78 on September 7; 75 on September 8 – 10; 80 on September 11 – 14; 85 on September 15; 90 on September 16 – 30; 85 on October 1, and 80 on October 2 – 10. Flux values rise to 90 again after October 12 in this forecast from September 2.

Predicted planetary A index is 8, 5, 10, and 8 on September 3 – 6; 5 on September 7 – 10; 10 and 8 on September 11 – 12; 5 on September 13 – 20; 8 on September 21; 5 on September 22 – 25; then a big jump to 25, 8, 18, 8, and 12 on September 26 – 30, back to 5 on October 1 – 7, and then 10 and 8 on October 8 – 9.

Here’s the geomagnetic activity forecast for September 3 – 29, from F.K. Janda, OK1HH.

The geomagnetic field will be:

quiet on September 7 – 8, 10, 14 – 15, 17 – 18, 28 – 29
quiet to unsettled on September 4 – 5, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 27
quiet to active on September 3, 6, 9, 11 – 12, 20 – 21, 26
unsettled to active on September 23 ( – 24)
active to disturbed — nothing predicted
Remarks:

* Parentheses mean lower probability of activity enhancement.

* The situation is confusing, the configuration of active regions and coronal holes is variable, so it’s not possible to make a reasonably reliable forecast. This occasionally happens before solar activity rises.

The autumnal equinox will be on Wednesday, September 22, in the Northern Hemisphere, always a welcome event for HF propagation. Solar flux is forecast to be higher at that time, also a good sign.

Sunspot numbers for August 26 – September 1, 2021 were 47, 73, 77, 44, 41, 37, and 35, with a mean of 50.6. The 10.7 centimeter flux was 88.6, 89.5, 89.9, 88.7, 90.6, 84.4, and 84.2, with a mean of 88. Estimated planetary A indices were 6, 20, 14, 8, 7, 7, and 5, with a mean of 9.6. Middle latitude A index was 6, 19, 17, 9, 9, 9, and 6, with a mean of 10.7.

Glenn Hauser logs September 2-3, 2021

** BRAZIL. 4885, Sept 2 at 0645, quarter-hour pips like a timesignal, Rádio Bandeirantes IDs and promos, which is the network R. Clube do Pará relays a lot; now no sign of a second carrier from Acre vs this S9/+10, biggest Brazie on band. By 0900, Bryan Clark, NZ, was hearing them both competing (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370, Sept 2 at 1504, RHC S9+20 undermodulated with `Efemérides` segment, wrong frequency instead of vacant 15140; also nothing on 15230, but // 11760; while on 31m there remains S7-S9 of dead air on 9710 not yet turned off. Somethings` always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NEW ZEALAND. 7245, Sept 2 at 0600+, no signal from RNZP which is supposed to start this frequency now; nor any on 11725, scheduled until 0559. But Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria, was tracking it: ``Radio New Zealand Pacific on wrong frequencies at 0600 UT, September 2: till 0604 on 13840 instead of 11725 kHz; from 0604 on 11725 instead of 7245 kHz; from 0614 on 7245 RAN 050 kW / 035 deg to All Pacific English, as scheduled in A-21`` When I check again at 0649, 7245 has indeed come up. A Thursday so maybe disrupted by maintenance testing (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1170, Sept 2 at 0606 UT, ``Talk Radio 11-70`` ID still from KFAQ Tulsa, not ``The Blitz 1170 AM`` stupid ballgame talk as previously publicized to start Aug 23. Brock Whaley, SC forwards an allaccess.com story that the flip is now scheduled to begin Tuesday Sept 7, but refers to new format ``all day``, nothing about overnight. Loss of one of countless `C2CAM` affiliates would hardly be missed, except perhaps by Tulsans who can`t imagine any out-of-town AM radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2102)

** PERU. 4810, Sept 2 at 0642 previous JBA carrier has improved to JBA music, so a broadcaster, vs CODAR and LSB tuning essential vs STANAG noise on 4812. Also 0659-0702+ but music continues, no ID. I still think it`s likely reactivated R. Logos, Chazuta, as does Bryan Clark, New Zealand, who replies Sept 2 to my yesterday`s report:

``Glenn, I have heard non-stop music on 4810 LSB several times over the past week. I recorded the frequency on 29 August from 0723 past 0900 UTC and the music sounds like contemporary Christian vocals. The frequency measured here is 4809.993. I am now replaying my recording for any other clues and will advise, but my guess would be Radio Logos.

Earlier today (0859 UTC) I discovered a Latin American station on 4939.973 with good signals, co-channel with the Colombian religious station. Latter was clear on the Bonaire KiwiSDR with only the barest trace of the other station showing on the waterfall. Checking an Argentinean SDR I found the mystery station was at good level. I have yet to replay my recording but suspect that this is Peruvian Radio San Antonio, which MWOffsets io Group lists as on 4939.971. Best regards from Mangawhai, New Zealand - Bryan Clark``

4810, Sept 3 at 0105, via Bonaire SDR a definite carrier, but just a bit of talk modulation even in LSB tuning, S4 unreadable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2102)

** U S A. 329-MCW kHz, Sept 2 at 0635 UT, ND beacon PMV, 25 watts from Plattsmouth NE. Noise level diminished a bit audiblizing it.

326-MCW kHz, Sept 2 at 0636 UT, NDB MA, 400 watts from Midland TX, also not heard for months. I was tuned to 324-USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, Sept 2 at 1507, HIFER beacon is JBA with ID K6FRC repeating, QRMing CODAR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Glenn Hauser logs September 1, 2021

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, Sept 1 at 1452, another week, another Wednesday, with no signal from LRA36 into Brasil SDR. Could the `season` be over? It was last heard Sunday August 8 concluding a 5-day-straight `marathon`, after which they made excuses due to weather. Will keep checking at least on Wed and Sat around this time (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5040, Sept 1 at 0129, S9 of dead air from RHC, where something is always wrong (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000, Sept 1 at 0629, RHC English is still on here; normally turns off by 0600. The rest of The Cuban Five are also running late: 6060 undermodulated with somehum but not a lot of buzz; 6100 VG S9+20; 6165 undermod, all in English, and 5040 in music, Spanish service. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9790, Sept 1 at 0637, huge S9+20 open carrier. RFI is scheduled at 0400-0700, but I think this must be CRI relay transmitter still on air after 0300-0457. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6974.9-AM, Sept 1 at 0126, pirate music at S7-S9, much more than the usual JBA off-frequency carrier from presumed Nowhere Radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 11670, Wed Sept 1 at 2200, the *only* SNR token English frequency to be heard at Maryland SDR and UTwente. VG except at UTw bothered by splash from S9+30 11660, CRI French until 2230 via Kashgar, East Turkistan, land of ChiCom imperialist genocide; 11940 obviously still off the air [but JBA carrier at 2058, presumably remnant of CRI Bulgarian via Kashgar until 2057], but no signals either on 17855 or 15520, which I at first assume must be inaudiblized by degraded propagation, Sept 1 at 2058, but WWV at 2100 says K=0, SF=84, no storms yet, but moderate to G2 level forecast. So 75% of REE are off the air? Something`s always nonsensical at Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Wed Sept 1 at 2200, VOT VG into UTwente SDR opening English with news and press review; 2213 COVID PSA; 2214 `Feeling Supreme` about folk remedies starting with gargling lemon juice for sore throat, and finishing with something about the ``plodge`` in the XIV century -- I think he`s trying to say ``plague``. Something`s always awry at Ankara. 2222 music; 2225 plug the 41 languages available at trtvotbird.com ? No, that must be https://www.trtdinle.com/channel/trt-world where I listen for a few minutes to the conclusion of a discussion show `Newsmakers`, and then `Nexus` --- obviously a TV soundtrack without any video --- good accents in even American English unlike the SW station simultaneously in TurcoEnglish (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2101 monitoring: Sept 1 unawake as usual Wed 1030 on WRMI 5850; did anyone hear it?

Confirmed Wed Sept 1 at 2100 on WRMI 7780, and starting about 21 seconds later on WBCQ 7490-: both JBA S7 in storm noise here; at UTwente, 7780 also JBA S7 with storm noise tho no Blitz around Holland, none closer than east Spain, north Algeria, and west Black Sea. Into Maryland SDR, both S7 but not so noisy, WBCQ as always way low measured in SAM mode, minus 142v Hz = 7489.858. Next, and last:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Thanks this week to Dan in Cincinnati, who says, ``Dear Glenn, I am
writing to thank you again for all of the great information that you
gather and report weekly`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4790-, Sept 1 at 0626 check, WBCQ is off with no TOMBS, clearing frequency for CODAR swoorps. BTW, Aoki still doesn`t list WBCQ on 4790! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7490-, Wed Sept 1 at 2200, WBCQ with `AAAWWW` playback from last Friday night. I notice the waterfall at Maryland SDR is sort of spiral during `William Tell Overture` theme, I guess reflecting the modulation pattern of that piece (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7505, Sept 1 at 0125 check, WRNO New Orleans is still off. What will all their Hindi proto-Christian listener do after 0315? Probably until AC restored; no more reports until someone hear it again, on its token schedule of 0100-0400 UT only. It would have been less hazardous to transmit from Fort Worth (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Sept 1 at 0138-0148; tipped by 1 kHz het as I tune across 1000 KTOK OKC: 612, 657(2), 684, 729, 738, 747(2), 774(2), 801, 837(2), 855(2), 882, 909, 936(2), 999, 1044, 1053, 1062, 1089, 1098(2), *1107, 1125(2), 1134, 1152, 1215(2), 1296, 1305(2). At this early hour, all of Eurafrica is still in darkness. Probably mostly Spain and UK on frequencies with any significant power, altho *1107, momentarily strongest, and 1296 bring to mind Afghanistan, where Kabul sunrise was 0056 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4810, Sept 1 at 0627, JBA carrier vs constant STANAG uteblob circa 4812. Possibly R. Logos, Chazuta, Perú, active? Tho Aoki shows it as the only 4810 station and at 0900-2400 only. WRTH agrees the only 4810 anywhere, anywhen is that 1 kW station, OAW9A. Nothing since 2019 or 2020 at http://www.ethnicradio.org which is missionary HQ in Orange, California. Not reported since late last year when there was also a lot of activity on disgraced FB: https://www.facebook.com/Radio-Logos-4810-Mhz-Chazuta-501777529885017 And only generic, undated info but with some still photos at: https://radiologoschazuta.com/es/ Of course, this 4810 could also be a ute (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

DUTCH PIRATE RADIO MONIQUE INTERNATIONAL WANTS NAm LISTENERS TO BE PART OF ITS PROGRAM TO BE RELAYED ON WRMI

The first program will be broadcast live on Saturday, September 4, at 1500 UTC, and recorded for a later rebroadcast via WRMI. Radio Monique will use a frequency somewhere between 6240 and 6340 kHz, usually around 6285 kHz.

Check the Texas Radio Shortwave Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/texasradiosw) on September 4 for Radio Monique International’s frequency.

Listeners are asked to email or message Radio Monique with questions, comments, and music requests. As many emails and messages as possible will be read over the air, along with music dedications.

The recorded program will then air on WRMI, 5950 kHz, at 0000 UTC on October 3.

North American listeners can tune in using these European remote Software Defined Receivers:

Weston, UK - http://websdr.uk:8060/

NW Ireland - http://irelandnorthwest.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073/ or http://irelandnorthwest2.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073/

University of Twente, NL - http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/.

The UK and Ireland sites have a limited number of listening slots but may provide a better signal. The University of Twente receiver’s signal sometimes isn’t as good as the others but can handle hundreds of listeners simultaneously.

For the more adventurous, here’s a site providing access to remote SDRs worldwide: http://rx.linkfanel.net/. Select the one with the best reception.

There are several ways to communicate with Radio Monique during and after the broadcast:

Join the European pirate chat: http://freeradiochat.blogspot.com/2020/03/chat-for-free-radio-listeners-and.html (IMPORTANT: Guests MUST change their ID/Name by left-clicking on it in the righthand column, normally it's the ID on top of the list, otherwise you could be banned.)

Send an email to radiomoniqueradio@hotmail.nl

Reply to the top post on Radio Monique’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/radiomonique.international/ (IMPORTANT: Make certain to choose All Comments and refresh the page regularly to see posts as they are added.)

Tune in and have some fun with Radio Monique.

WRMI RELAYS EUROPEAN PIRATE STATION RADIO CLASH SUNDAY AT 0000 UTC ON 5950 KHZ

WRMI RELAYS EUROPEAN PIRATE STATION RADIO CLASH SUNDAY AT 0000 UTC ON 5950 KHZ

The first program in a new series of Europirate relays begins September 5 at 0000 UTC.  TRSW’s monthly Prime program, Austin City Limits live follows the relay at 0100 UTC.

Names have been changed to protect the guilty, but Radio Clash supremo Steve Kelly previously deejayed on the legendary offshore Voice of Peace and Radio Caroline. Missing the pirate buzz, he's back playing tunes and talking nonsense from the outer extremities of Europe on SW.

Reception reports must be sent directly to the station at radioclashqsl@gmail.com.  TRSW won’t issue an eQSL for the broadcast.

Stations to be relayed on WRMI in the coming weeks are:

September 11-12 = Radio Merlin (UK) *
September 18-19 = Crusin’ Radio (UK)
September 25-26 = Offshore History Radio (The Netherlands)

October 2-3 = Radio Monique International (The Netherlands) *
October 9-10 = Radio Blackstone International (The Netherlands)
October 16-17 = Charleston International Radio (Germany) *
October 23-24 = KR1 (The Netherlands)
October 30-31 = Cupid Radio (UK) *

November 6-7 = Radio Pamela (UK)
November 13-14 = Radio Jingle Bells (Germany)
November 20-21 = Free Radio Service-Holland (The Netherlands) *
November 27-28 = The Vault (Somewhere in Europe).

*Returning content provider with new programming.
