This on one receiver with a lower noise level and loop antenna. Brock Whaley, Aiken SC, found the reason why KQOB disappeared:

``In other filings with the FCC, CHAMPLIN BROADCASTING, INC. applied for an STA to operate KQOB/ENID, OK at another tower site on a temporary basis due to damage to the existing antenna. via allaccess.com Aug. 3``

So I dig into FCC documentation. Here it is:

At 0027 UT August 4, KQOB still appears to be off; altho when it return on such a low-power, 9/9 kW, faraway STA, it may be unnoticeable without strain here in its CoL (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A. 1200, August 3 at 0646 UT, gospel huxter in English overcoming WOAI San Antonio, not only now but often when monitored on my E/W longwire which admittedly is unideal for a station slightly west of south. Makes a fast SAH with `C2CAM` on WOAI. On the DX-398 I try to DF it, and find it`s slightly east of due north, i.e. the two are almost exactly opposite, which is bad news for would-be WOAI listeners: if you null the QRM here you also null WOAI.

It`s got to be KFNW, Fargo ND, which is a g.h. station but all its night power of 13 kW is supposed to head north! Must be totally out of whack; and if so, why not ascribe 50 kW day power to it too, when pattern is also northward but a significant minor lobe southward. No other possibilities than KFNW by format, language and direxion. It`s ironic that the original ``Clear Channel`` station, WOAI, find itself in such a situation; but who cares now? Kuwait: It was noted that Radio Kuwait did not stick to the expected DRM schedule but broadcast in pure AM which resulted in a monitoring project...

1800-2100 h UTC: 15540 kHz English not on air

In 2018, I listened to all Urdu broadcasts available on short wave (Auslandssendungen in Urdu, in: Radio-Kurier 2019,2 (Februar 2019), S. 20-24.). Back then, Radio Kuwait’s Urdu service was rarely observed and the multilingual domestic service was not available online. So I embarked on a listening project to add new observations to my file. Listening to several hours of Urdu, I can share these observations:

1) language (with a view to some voices advocating “pure” Urdu and Hindi respectively): While times and frequencies are given in Urdu, telephone numbers are given in English. At times some English words are thrown in, and even as a non Urdu speaker you will recognise the topics. Example 1: “vaccine” and the names of different producers of vaccines, “social distancing”, “delta variant”, “virus”. Example 2: Afghanistan, “human rights”, “forces”. Moreover people interviewed were free to speak as they would. (I seem to remember that in AIR Urdu the moderator added the Urdu word when a person interviewed used an English expression.) Example: 3 from a long interview programme “blood bank, “donation”, “blood campaign”, “for registration it will take only 5 minutes”, “check whether you are * for donation or not”, “less than 15 minutes...” (actually the same process as I know in Germany), “corona”.

2) religious influence: All the programmes are done “bismillah rahmani rahim”, “in the name of Allah the most beneficent the most merciful”. The first feature after opening the two hour programme is a Qur’an recitation with a Urdu translation sentence by sentence. The second feature is a religious reflection of about five minutes. In the second hour listeners’ were reminded of the local prayer time with an intro and outro in English.

3) entertainment elements: You can listen to some light hearted lively exchanges, but entertainment is mostly by South Asian hit music like tum se hi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt9xg0mmt28) or na tum jaano na hum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK596ntCp9c). I dare to say it consists mostly of slower versions and titles sung by male singers. With one or two exceptions I noted female singers only as background singers. (This observation parallels my impression when listening to Pakistani radio online and comparing the music heard with the one on Indian online stations and SLBC on shortwave also.)

4) team: There are female and male producers. In sign on and sign off announcements the technicians are also mentioned.

Vatican: no French news to Middle East at 1600

Vatican - Vatican Radio has quietly dropped its French news broadcast to the Moyen Orient, which I find significant because of the connection with many Lebanese churches (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_in_Lebanon). This seems to be confirmed by looking at the schedule of the French stream (https://www.vaticannews.va/fr/epg.html#schedules). The short wave time is now filled with music (even secular) until the quarter hour with English „Vatican and World News“ starts.

Ofcom agrees for Radio Caroline to turn up the power

A power increase has been agreed for Radio Caroline to extend its coverage area from Suffolk and Essex to include Kent as East Sussex.

The station is broadcasting under a community radio licence and was originally granted 1kW of power on 648 AM in 2018. The actual power increase amount has not been announced.

Ofcom says a power increase was agreed to combat man made noise and interference in the existing coverage area, and to extend coverage to adjoining areas.

While the subsequent increase in the licensed area was considered to be significant, the decision-maker deemed there to be exceptional circumstances in order to approve this request, saying the service has experienced high levels of background noise and interference, particularly in urban areas.

The licensee also serves a ‘community of interest’ as opposed to a defined geographic community meaning the service is positioned to be accessible to the community of interest in the proposed extended areas.

Ofcom adds: “There is an affinity between the existing and extended coverage area as the sea path from the existing transmitter at Orford means that the service is already receivable in parts of the extended coverage area, although existing reception is currently poor. Furthermore, the studio location means that the station attracts and engages volunteers from both the existing and extended coverage areas. The power increase will therefore improve signal in the extended coverage area, where some of the station’s volunteers live and work.”

“The applicant cited demand from its online audience base for access to the service via analogue. The power increase will therefore contribute to fulfilling this demand and broaden choice in how the community of interest in the extended area access the service.

“The licensee provided plans of how it would further engage audiences in the extended areas noting that the social gain prospects would be greatly enhanced in Kent, Essex and elsewhere as a consequence of the proposed extended coverage.

“Specifically, the extended coverage would result in their iconic and historically important Radioship becoming part of the licensed area. This will enable the use of this museum space to serve as an educational tool in offshore radio, and an additional education and training resource for potential volunteer radio presenters and technicians, which alongside the studio facilities in Kent will provide additional social gain capabilities.
No additional frequency resource is required to extend the service to the community of interest in the extended area.”

** CUBA. 5990, August 2 at 0600 tune-in RHC, just in time to hear theme music before cutoff 0601*. I suppose on wrong frequency all evening instead of 6000, not checked earlier. Hansjoerg Biener, Germany had 5990 at 0305 and Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria also noted 5990 until 0601*. Then I found 6060 still on with humbuzz and 6165 OK. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

5990 is only for CRI relay until 0100; but 6000 is normally on before 0100 so not same transmitter. Wolfgang Bueschel suggests the Quivicán operator may have been drunk on rum and failed to carry out the necessary switching. August 2 at 2320, both 5990 and 6000 are on (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 93.9, August 2 at 1759 UT, KIMY Watonga is *still* open carrier, dead air, as first noted July 30, so now into its fourth day. Have not monitored 24/7 of course, but whenever I have it has been dead. Amazing.

95.1, Aug 2 at 1800 UT, also still an open carrier here but much weaker than 93.9, QRMing OK/KS stations fading in and out, thought to be an abandoned lowpower transmitter circa Enid (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 96.9, August 2 at 1801 UT, KQOB is OFF! Licensed to Enid but funxioning as an OKC station since it moved site halfway there to a field west of Crescent to grow a tall tower. For a while it was ``Bob`` but now it`s ``Alice`` --- could there have been a change in its target demographic? But would females or males prefer or not the opposite sex in a radio station?? Opposite? I mean, ``another``. I know a trans person named Alice.

FCC FM Query shows it was KNID until 2000, but IIRC before then it was the original KCRC-FM on 96.9. KNID calls wound up on 107.1 in ``North`` Enid. Yes, FCC history cards at

KQOB still off all afternoon, such as 2240, 2344 UT chex Aug 2. First time I can ever recall it absent. As soon as I found the hole, I perched on it as I was bandscanning due to a 100 MHz Es patch to the NW, but no DX.

Unless: fade-in like Es at 1828, ad for Shriver Auxion Services. Can`t be certain of Shriver/Shreiber? spelling but respelling Auxion conventionally I get two hits: Winchester OH and --- Pittsburg KS. Of course it`s just my second-closest 96.9, KKOW which is normally totally blocked by KQOB: KKOW 96.9 PITTSBURG KS COUNTRY 96.9 THE KOW 100.0 100.0 278.0 278.0 37-18-44 94-48-58 2BEA THE KOW - per WTFDA DB; and there is no likely Ohio station around Winchester (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

The very best one I have seen on Philo Farnsworth is on American Experience, parts one and two on Youtube. In my heart of hearts I believe this wonderful visionary never got the credit he deserved. With RCA's Sarnoff's deceitful history, he never said that due to Farnsworth's CRT, they had television in Britain and Germany, as you know, in 1936 from the experiments begun in the US by Farnsworth.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
26 July - 01 August 2021

Solar activity was very low under a mostly spotless disk. No
Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at
normal to moderate levels with a peak flux of 779 pfu observed at
30/1600 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The
period began with nominal solar wind parameters on 26 Jul through
late on 27 Jul. At approximately 27/1830 UTC, total field began to
increase to a peak of 18 nT at 28/1038 UTC followed by an increase
in solar wind speed to near 545 km/s as a positive polarity coronal
hole high speed stream (CH HSS) became geoeffective. Solar wind
speed slowly diminished to nominal levels through 01 Aug. The
geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled levels on 27 and
29 Jul and quiet to active levels on 28 Jul. The rest of the period
was at quiet levels.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
02 August - 28 August 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a chance
for low levels on 05-18 Aug with the return of old Regions 2842
(N25, L=200) and 2845 (S15, L=195).

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 02-28 Aug.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on
05-06, 10-11, 16-18, 23-25 Aug and active levels on 10, 24 Aug due

Not/confirmed Sunday August 1 at 2200 on Area 51 & WBCQ. On webcast it starts promptly but no signal on 6159.9v into three New England SDRs checked. However at 2208 recheck, on webcast WOR has been replaced by Hobart Radio International interval-signal show, which is supposed to follow at 2230. What in the world is going on? HRI ends at 2234, then more music fill until TimTron at 2300. The 2200 WOR broadcast was also missing from SW last week, but ran at 0300 UT Monday instead. This week, 4790 & 7490 other WBCQs are confirmed on.

Confirmed Sunday August 1 at 2238 the 2230 on WRMI 9955; Bonaire busy, but nearby Trinidad SDR, always inferior, barely hears it S7 with noise. Much better into Tennessee, VG S9+20/30. Next:

Currently these are used for an audio version of a TV series „Unlocking Bible prophecies“, but on 31 July and 1 August 2021 it was noted that the transmission at 1400 h ends at 1430 h in mid-programme. The transmission at 0200 h was broadcast in full length on 1 August. If AWR only booked half an hour for the second broadcast, the frequency management should be made aware of the problem. A cuore aperto: ANALIZZATORE UNIVERSALE I.C.E. Mod. 680 (1954)

Oggi, per riposare la schiena dal sollevamento IMCARADIO, metterò a cuore aperto uno storico strumento di misura, presente per decenni su quasi tutti i banchi da lavoro dei radiotecnici. Si tratta dell' "ANALIZZATORE UNIVERSALE I.C.E. Mod. 680".

Progenitore dei vari 680E, G, ed R, il 680 fa parte della prima produzione I.C.E. e risale ai primi anni 50, probabilmente al 1953/54. Contenuto in una custodia molto economica, fatta in cartone pressato e dotata di scomparto per puntali, lo strumento è corredato di puntali e del suo libretto " D' ISTRUZIONE", che contiene tutte le specifiche per il suo corretto uso. Descritto come ANALIZZATORE - TESTER - CAPACIMETRO, ha una sensibilità di 20.000 Ohm per Volt sulle tensioni continue e di 4000 Ohm per Volt sulle tensioni alternate.

Di dimensioni molto contenute rispetto ai suoi omologhi (140 X 96 X 38 mm) e dal peso di soli 500 grammi batteria compresa, è dotato di uno strumento di ampie dimensioni, (83 X 55 mm) che, notate bene, non è ancora dotato di specchio per evitare l'errore di parallasse.

Lo stesso strumento è sigillato ed il gruppo mobile è montato "SU GIOIELLI", come cita la descrizione, e su sospensioni elastiche per poter resistere ad urti " abbastanza forti " e quindi consigliato ai tecnici che dovessero affrontare vibrazioni continuate come viaggi in moto, auto o aereo.

Ricordiamo che in quegli anni, molte riparazioni si effettuavano a domicilio data la mole degli apparecchi radio prima e di quelli televisivi poi, ed un tester "tascabile" era quanto di meglio si potesse desiderare.

SCHEMA COMPLETO

Pensiamo al radiotecnico di qualche cittadina di provincia, siamo nei primi anni 50, che doveva magari spostarsi da un paese all'altro con la motocicletta e la borsa degli attrezzi messa alla meglio sul sellino posteriore. Ricordiamo che la I.C.E. raccomandava di usare lo strumento in posizione orizzontale, data la sua grande sensibilità...

Le portate sono ben 25, tutte selezionabili spostando debitamente le piccole spine tra le varie prese disposte sul frontale: Vca da 10 a 1000, Vcc da 2 a 1000, Ohm da X1 a X10.000, assorbimenti da 5 microAmpere a 500 milliAmpere (più che sufficienti per misure di assorbimenti su ricevitori radio), pF X10 e X100 per le capacità e misurazione di uscita bf per tarature di ricevitori.

PORTATE E MISURE

Per le misure di capacità e di alti valori di resistenza, sul lato destro dello strumento è presente l'ingresso per la tensione di rete, da 110 a 220 Volts che, debitamente raddrizzata da un piccolo rettificatore ad ossidi, viene impiegata per questo tipo di misure, conferendo all'analizzatore una maggiore sensibilità. Per nota, le boccole in cui vanno inserite le spine per le varie misure sono dotate di molle di contatto autoregistranti, costruite in lega di rame e berillio e placcate in argento.

Per l'Ohmetro è necessaria una piletta da tre Volts che va inserita nel vano apposito, in cima allo strumento, che ha molle di pressione in bronzo fosforoso. Nel libretto sono rappresentati gli schemi di ogni sezione dello strumento ed uno schema generale in modo che il tecnico potesse, nel caso, provvedere per proprio conto ad eventuali riparazioni dello strumento stesso.

Alla prova, il nostro 680 si è dimostrato ancora valido, piuttosto preciso e sensibile e, a dirla tutta, lo uso spesso per misure sui miei apparecchi.

Senza dubbio, il nostro I.C.E. 680 è il capostipite della fortunatissima serie di tester Mod.680, usciti dalla gloriosa fabbrica italiana e credo che la sua descrizione sia di interesse per tutti gli amici appassionati, tecnici ed autocostruttori.

** CHINA. CNR1 jammers: 12880, July 31 at 1358 and only 12500, S7-S8 with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13740, August 1 at 0105, RHC Spanish happens to be on and S9+30. That reminds me, someone recently reported RHC on 27480 but did not realize it was second harmonic of 13740; but I haven`t been able to find that report again. I`ve yet to hear 27480 myself, but worth keeping checking when there is some sporadic E at least to 28 MHz; also other Cubans on 27400 and 27300 when the resp. fundamentals radiate (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 12000, August 1 at 0114, RHC with YL in thin English [thinglish?], quite readable but less than the S9+30 signal on 6000 fundamental. Yet only a JBA carrier on 12330 = 2 x 6165. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GREECE. 9420, Sat July 31 at 0542, VOG is on at S5-S8. Eric Fetters-Walp in Washington had noted it missing at 0240. Ron Howard says they were back on by 0436. We expect them to be silent early UT Mondays, but not Saturdays. Alan Holder explains:

``They may have been off earlier due to a technical problem with the transmitter or maybe even the power supply from the Grid was interrupted.

Sign on time is supposed to be 1800, but times are very erratic. On some days they are on just after 1730; the latest I have heard them sign on is 1915.

After the close of the usual religious service (theia lietourgia) early on Sunday mornings, there is no broadcast on Sunday evenings and 9420 is never back on until 1800 on Monday.

I have often wondered why this should be - is the transmitter engineer deeply religious and attending church services on Sundays? No - the answer is most likely the fact that under Greek labour laws, anyone working on Sundays is entitled to their normal wage + 25%. Overnight working on Sundays means they receive 75% on top of their regular salary.

** OKLAHOMA [non?}. 96.5, July 31 at 1744 UT there`s a chance of sporadic E MUFing into FM, so bandscanning on caradio, but `open` channels are choppy with fringe signals fading in and out thru the 100-degree groundwave atmosphere. On 96.5 at least besides the two Okies, I barely hear bits of Spanish music, and at 1747 YL in Spanish. However, another momentary peak at 1902 in Spanish seems to mention Oclajoma. KECO Elk City is certainly not SS but possibly could run some ads in Spanish, which is the Second Language in OK, by 7.3% of the population. And I do find some search hits combining Spanish with Elk City, but not directly with that station in CiudAnte (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

WORLD OF RADIO 2097 monitoring: confirmed Sat July 31 at 1618 the 1600 on WRN webcast to N America; and also on satellite.

Also confirmed Sat July 31 at 1800+ on IRRS via AM Italia 918 kHz, Granze, S9+32 into nearby Noale SDR; and 6 seconds later on IRRS 7290 kHz via Bulgaria, good into UTwente. As usual, 918 chopped off previous talk program before 1759 for IRRS` Aïda theme; 7290 went from open carrier except for warble on USB side, to join Aïda in progress about a minute later; very brief ID, pause and then WOR on both.

Also confirmed Sat July 31 at 1956, about halfway into so started circa 1942 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, S9+8 into nearby KB0FX SDR.

Also confirmed Sat July 31 at 2000 on WRMI 15770, S5-S6 into UTwente, S9+15/20 into Maryland SDR; followed SMTV until 1959.5 cut to WRMI ID.
