A cuore aperto: Ricevitore a Cristallo FULLER UNITED ELECTRIC WORKS (1922)

L'apparecchio che oggi esaminiamo a cuore aperto, è un ricevitore a cristallo costruito nel 1922 in Inghilterra dalla FULLER UNITED ELECTRIC WORKS, LTD Che si trovava a CHADWELL HEAT, ESSEX.

Si tratta di un semplicissimo apparecchietto che venne costruito a causa del fallimento di una fabbrica di sigari...si, perché dal fallimento della fabbrica di sigari, FULLER acquistò per pochissimi soldi una partita di scatole per sigari nelle quali ebbe l'idea di alloggiare questo piccolo ricevitore.

Molto semplice nella realizzazione, ha la sintonia a variazione variometrica ottenuta tramite due bobine affacciate di cui una mobile, che esplora la superficie di quella fissa determinando così la variazione della sintonia che, detto tra noi, tutto è tranne che acuta....

In alto a sinistra troviamo l'ingresso di antenna e l'innesto della "SPARTA LONG WAVE COIL", bobina addizionale con la quale poter ascoltare le stazioni ad alta potenza in onda lunga "...se vi trovaste nei pressi...." Sotto si trova il cercatore, montato su un pratico ed ancora funzionante snodo che permette di esplorare la superficie del cristallo onde poter trovare il miglior punto sensibile; ancora in basso c'è il contenitore del cristallo con possibilità di essere chiuso per proteggere lo stesso cristallo da polvere e sporcizia. Accanto ci sono i morsetti per la cuffia.

 

A destra, in alto, troviamo le due prese di terra: una, denominata "L" serve quando dovesse essere impiegata una antenna lunga (oltre 100 piedi, lontana da alberi, oggetti metallici e più alta possibile,raccomandano) e l'altra, denominata "S" per antenne più corte; spostando il morsetto stesso, si cambia presa di terra.

La grossa manopola di sintonia con scala graduata ed il timbro di approvazione BBC completano il pannello di questo semplice ma bell'apparecchio.

Non ci sono componenti di alcun tipo, non è presente nemmeno il classico condensatore posto sull'uscita cuffia a mò di filtro. Il cablaggio è realizzato con morsetti a bulloncino ed esiste una sola saldatura sul perno della bobina del variometro.

Interessanti le istruzioni, poste nelle parte inferiore del coperchio di chiusura della scatola in cui, tra l'altro, è raccomandato di non toccare il cristallo per non ridurne la sensibilità e di mettere l'antenna a terra quando l'apparecchio non è in uso, per evitare danni da eventuali fulmini.

La cuffia è una OMEGA da 2000 Ohm, risalente alla fine degli anni 20.

La prova di ascolto, con antenna filare, ha permesso di seguire un programma di musica e notizie da Radio Romania, sempre fortissima, durante una serata. L'amplificazione è ancora con speaker da computer per poter mostrare l'apparecchio in funzione.

Ecco un altro piccolo apparecchietto che merita di essere conosciuto.

Smontiamo tutto, anche accessori come altoparlanti a tromba, strumenti di misura, altoparlanti a spillo.. diffondiamo la cultura e la conoscenza della storia della radio....

** COLOMBIA? 4940, Dec 5 at 2302, quick check on Bonaire of anonymous mystery missionary station finds it playing the song `Corazón de Melón`, not exactly a gospel tune. Or `Watermelon Heart`, by Trini López version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfGoA_fcgr4 YouTube also has a Pérez Prado version but with a songstress. It seems the name also applies to a dating game, a.k.a. Sweet Crush. Ah, what a learning experience SWLing can be (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 6080, Sat Dec 5 at 2139, tune in on UTwente SDR to a special broadcast of the Mighty KBC, tnx to a reminder from Alan Roe. Excellent near-local quality reception in SyncAM mode. ``Waiting for Santa Claus to enter the studio`` now, and next hour. Rock music, Dutch and English ads and IDs; 2145 as ``60-80 kHz, 100 kW direct from Yerevan``.

At 2205 I posted to the WOR, NASWA and BDXC iogroups:

``O o, 2159.5 switch 6080 to AWR IS & ID, Voice of Hope, introducing 2200 Bangla! 2201, switch back to Dutch - KBC. Was this a joke, or mistake? English, ``the adventure starts here`` --- not Adventist... Resuming frenetic rock and DJ chatter. commercials in bilanguages. Frequent IDs ``6080 kHz, direct from Yerevan`` --- not Gavar?? VG reception via UTwente, not here``

AWR`s Bangla service is listed at 1300 UT only. 2200 would be a bit early, 4 am local. This was in reply to Alan`s original notes:

``A reminder that The Mighty KBC have a special broadcast tonight on 6080 kHz via Armenia from 2100 to 2300 UT. From the KBC webpage and Facebook page:

"The Mighty KBC and an uncensored Dave Donkervoort! Saturday 5 December 22:00-24:00! DAB+ 12 B and 6080 kHz. from Yerevan Armenia: December 5th and Saint Nicholas evening will never be the same! All times in CET."

Netherlands [non]. Fair signal of the special broadcast for Saint Nicholas Eve on 6080 kHz via Armenia signing on at 2100 UT. Mostly in Dutch with some announcements in English. Alan Roe, Teddington, UK``

Donkervoort could be translated Darkaway? His? expressiveness in Dutch is really excessive. I keep listening to this extravaganza instead of my usual KUCO post-opera birthday music [the Met Opera season has just begun all-repeats for obvious reasons, with Prokofiev`s Voyna i Mir for 4 hours, a bit much; I pass]; at 2254 KBC already says closing down on SW but music keeps playing until circa 2300 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1140, Dec 5 at 2013 UT, KRMP OKC is off the air, a hole in my caradio MW daytime bandscan. The 1 kW daytimer is always audible otherwise. December official FCC LSS is 2315 UT, so at home on DX-398 I check it from 2306: weak soul music loops SSE, both fittingly; 2313 some ads mentioning OKC, so that`s it. A Progressive commercial is chopped off the air right at 2315* with no ID, goodbye, national anthem, sign-off, or retune to FM. How rude!

This Tyler translator is on 92.1, so who cares about the AM. Too much QRM on FM to hear it here, not including the long-gone KAMG-LP Enid. As far as FCC knows, that`s still on the air. Nobody paying attention. If they monitored my log reports, they would have known when it came and went years ago; ha.

** THAILAND. 13750, Dec 6 at 0058 I remember to check Radio Thailand`s NAm service in English, as Steven Wiseblood has reported it well into the RGV: ``13750 THAILAND R. Thailand 0030z decent signal with W in EG reading news, 0035z into M in EG culture in Thailand (Wiseblood-TX 12/06)`` ---

So I bring up the TWR Brownsville SDR in time to hear some music; break off at 0059, back on at 0100 with the Thai national anthem, which I was hearing a lot 50 years ago, and into Thai hour. Both only fair by that Kiwi. HFCC shows a slight beam change from 30 to 38 degrees, why?

The 6-degree azimuth from Udorn for NAm East is at 0000-0030 & 0200-0230 English, 0230-0330 Thai; 30 degrees for NAm West English at 0030-0100 only; shouldn`t the later 0200-0330 segment be for the West? Anyhow, standard remark that since HSK9 are using USAGM facility, to reach us much better, they should be on Grimesland! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2063 monitoring: confirmed Saturday December 5 at 2048 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, Wentzville MO, VG S9+10 into nearby Warrenton SDR. After first having detected a JBA carrier direct in the almost-winter daytime.

UNIDENTIFIED. 1370, Dec 5 at 2015 UT, bandscan on caradio finds some talk station, mentions ``elexion fraud in Michigan``, so far-right extremist, of course, what else? I`m always looking for KGNO Dodge City KS, which I never can hear at any daypart, yet purports to be on the air, so is this it? 1370 tends to be desensitized on radios in most of Enid by the 1390 KCRC transmitter which is in the north-central along a major artery, Willow, but I am on the western outskirts where it is a little weaker and KGNO could be a little stronger. I try to find a spot away from power line noise by 2030 break, but it`s faded out. On home rig at 2045, two JBA carriers beat on 1370. Looking at listings, might also have been early skywave this time of year from e.g. KJCE, Austin market TX, another talker with a signal thisaway (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. Continued from last report on the RNA 11905-11910-11915 DRM: Dec 5 at 0402, Brasília SDR has MPB music at 16 dB SNR, always 14.06 kbps, S9+30, just a few dropouts but lost at 0404. At 0428 I go to TWR Bonaire SDR instead, where it`s 18.7 dB, few dropouts, music but frequent ID breaks, ``Nacional FM``; 0438 more completely ``Nacional FM 96.1 Brasília`` --- it seems WRTH 2020 includes NO FM info about Brazil, tho it does at least partially for other countries. Of course, AM and a bit of SW already occupy 21+ crammed pages. At 0452 this SDR times out for me so I switch to TWR Dominican Republic, which is generally inferior, but it`s still getting the DRM well at S9, 17.2 dB. Still at 0554 S8-S9, and past 0640. At 0658 I can hear the DRM noise myself at S3-S5. Replies to my previous report:

``I agree the antenna gain for the DRM transmission must be quite good. At a check just after 2300 UT December 4, the DRM signal level on 11910 into Houston was fairly decent, though I currently lack DRM decoding capability. Sounds much more powerful than the rated 2.5 kW. Meanwhile good RNA analog reception on 11780, but audio level rather low. Did not check 6180. Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

I still need to hear 6180 and 11910 and 11780 all on air at same time. Maybe it`s the same antenna of 6180 which is now needed for DRM if not the transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ERITREA [non]. 17545.055V, Saturday December 5 at 1530, Bayto Yaikl clandestine talk at S7/S9+10 direct, as I am trying to measure the frequency, it`s constantly wobbling, roughly 17545.05 to 17545.06, i.e. offset-plus just like when monitored on the additional Wednesday broadcast. The Saturday one is registered as from Issoudun, FRANCE. I thought this behaviour unusual even for ISS, so could be from somewhere else, like UAE? But now it`s clear the two are at least from some same site. At 1546 I try it via UTwente SDR: poor S6-S7 signal as would be apt, too close for skip distance, but in AM Synch mode it keeps trying to lock onto the wobbling frequency, briefly displaying offsets + such as: .033, .051, .030, .048, .027, .045 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) see also GERMANY [non]

15195, Sat Dec 5 at 1541, African talk in presumed Hausa, S7-S9, the Sat-only silly football game from Deutsche Welle relay, managing to modulate here unlike supposedly // 15350! The two are 7 degrees apart in azimuth, 165 here, 172 on 15350. 15195 also has a short/long path echo, and likely so would 15350 if there were anything on it to echo! ** U S A. 353-MCW kHz, Dec 5 at 0703 UT, ND beacon LIN --- ??? O, I have been faked out again by the mixture of LI in LIttle Rock and IN in INternational Falls. They are same pitch and perfectly in sync so sound like a 3-letter call but then they gradually separate into LI and IN with different periods, still overlapping. If pauses are long enough, each should become audible independently at some point. Classaxe.com shows LI at 6.2 seconds, IN at 6.03 --- close, but no cigar. Also that they are 8 Hz apart in pitch (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 17775-, Sat Dec 5 at 1623, KVOH is back on during `Wavescan` in English, having been missing Friday morning in Spanish, possibly due to deliberate fire-hazard power cut by SCE to the transmitter site; now only poor S7-S9 with hum --- I need to be careful reporting hum, as some local device could be imposing it; however there is no hum at same time on 17830 BBC ASCENSION. By 1817, KVOH has built up to S9+20/30/40 with praise music and devotional. DXMAP check at 1906 shows a 36 MHz Es MUF blob in the Four-Corners, roughly halfway (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5830, Dec 5 at 1818, WTWW-1 night frequency is on in the daytime with SFAW/PPP, S9/+10 but noisy; while 5085, WTWW-2 night frequency is also on and of course even weaker, rock music S9 vs noise level of S8. Whenever this happen, and it has before, one fears if the transmitter operator, even by remote control, may be indisposed, or worse. We know Ted has some health problems. Ivo Ivanov first noted them both after 1300, 1500, 1630 via remotes.

What are the allowable hours for WTWW? One sesquimonth after B-20 official start, FCC still has not got around to adding it to A-20:

Los pobladores se enteraban por la prensa gráfica sobre las novedades de este nuevo medio de comunicación y un grupo de personas comenzaron a reunirse para conocer más sobre la telegrafía y la radiotelegrafía y de ese modo se llegó a la creación del Radio Club de Ribeirão Preto y estaba conformado por comerciantes, profesionales, intelectuales y estudiantes…

BBC RADIO BRADFORD TO LAUNCH NEXT WEEK (774 kHz)

The BBC has announced the launch of BBC Radio Bradford - which will first air on Monday (December 7). 

The new temporary output will go live on weekdays from 6.00am until 2.00pm and is tailored especially for the people of the district and their lives.

The breakfast show - between 6.00am and 10.00am - will be hosted by Rima Ahmed, while Sanchez Payne will fill the 10.00am-2.00pm slot. 

Both presenters were discovered by the BBC - Rima through a talent search and Sanchez spotted hosting music events.

Programmes promise to prove a real celebration of Bradford, with its welcoming people and richly-diverse culture.

Local news bulletins will run on the hour to support audiences through the ongoing impact COVID-19 is continues to have on the Bradford and Keighley areas. The output is planned to continue until March 2021.

Last month, it was announced local BBC radio would be creating temporary local radio output for new locations in Bradford, Wolverhampton and Sunderland.

Chris Burns head of BBC audio and digital said: "Bradford is a unique and exciting city and we want to provide more localised content especially at this time.

"BBC Radio Bradford will provide sport and local news and information to help people make sense of what is happening where they live."

Rima Ahmed said: "It is thrilling to be given the chance to present the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Bradford.

"This has been a long time coming for the city and it is the listeners who will really own the show.

"We want to talk TO the people of Bradford - not just about the people of Bradford, as is so often the case.

"To be there when the city wakes up is going to be a real honour. I cannot wait to be your alarm clock, Bradford!"

Sanchez Payne added: "I am very excited to be a part of this journey of new beginnings and the birth of Radio Bradford which will represent such diversity, culture and history.

"I relish the opportunity to serve the Bradford community by sharing their stories, their voices, music, events and everything that makes the city so special.

"I aim to bring the passion, the pride and the energy this great city deserves."

** BRAZIL. 11905-11910-11915, Dec 4 at 2137, DRM noise audible here, S5-S6 with a JBA AM carrier in the middle; while RNA 11780-AM is S7-S9 with music.

At 2321 I check the DRM via Bonaire SDR. Definitely on the waterfall, sharp-edged 10-kHz wide, but no decode. Neighborhood Brasília SDR? S9+15/20 but still no decode; then briefly displays silently: SNR 4.2 dB, 14.06 kbps. With offset USB tuning, I can tell there is a considerable AM carrier amid at 11910, no doubt Japan as previously noted, scheduled 21-24 UT, blocking RNA at prime-time in the Amazon. Furthermore, at all times checked, there is also no signal on 6180, apparently the transmitter repurposed for DRM test on 11910.

At 2352 some RNA music cuts on and off, mostly off. Some headline texts start to display, SNR up to 13.2. Wonder if the NHK AM carrier has closed? No, not yet, as I from 2357 listen in offset USB, to hear that not quitting until 2400*. Now, RNA DRM should work better? NO.

Further chex: 0048 at Brasilia SDR: S9+25 but SNR 0.6 and no decode; 0107 check, at same SDR, 6180 is still off leaving a bit of China via Cuba. At 0200 Bonaire SDR; SNL 6.5, S8 signal, zero decode (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ERITREA [non]. 17545, Dec 4 at 1545, no signal from Bayto Yiakl, so that accounts for Friday off; yet to be checked after 1530: Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, lacking any explicit schedule; and on Saturday whether it be off-frequency+plus or not, Issoudun or not (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** IRELAND. 13264-USB, Dec 4 at 1456, VOLMET roboyl, i.e. Shannon, considerably weaker than 13270-USB, roboom from Gander. 13264 per Eibi could also be used by Albrook, Panamá ex-CZ, for HFDL (ID-11) in -HF, whatever that mean (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Trip Ericson of rabbitears.info asked if I could get KTOU, OKC, RF 21 again and clear up the uncertainties about subchannels. I reply on December 4:

``Trip, I figured it would be a while before I had another chance at KUOT RF 21, but in fact it decoded for a few minutes this morning at 1625 UT.

21-1, 3ABN, bug LR
21-2, triangle and No Signal! - not diamond
21-3, 3ABN = same as 21-1! slightly different audio levels
21-4, preacher with Bible verse grafix, another grafic the Secrets of Pentecost - no bugs, back in with credits just before 1700 but gone again before any ID. 1740, drops in with Amazing Facts on the set of the preacher
21-5 Hope, with bug UR, uplifted arms

I see that w9wi.com shows no subchannel info for 21 KUOT, and also
still shows KTOU still on 21 as well as 22.

Say, is there any way to sort/display r-e info by channel - showing
all stations everywhere on any physical channel? Then in order by
state? I don`t see that among your multiple options. This would be
very handy for DXing when you are not sure which state or market a
signal is coming from -- here, KS or OK most likely nearby but
something could also easily be in TX or AR.

W9WI.com does this but still nothing but Canada! Doug, hope you can
get that fixed. I was also getting a Bad signal on 32, I suppose the
nearest full power KRSU Claremore OK which I find in w9wi.com by state
Oklahoma, altho ambiguous whether on 32 or 36, LIC on both.

It'll let you plot the stations on a given channel, and then you can eyeball and see what you might be receiving. - Trip``

You can also set it to ignore adjacent channels and/or LP stations, but to check power and all other info have to go back to lists (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 15225, Dec 4 at 1458, S5-S8 African? drumming and chanting, 1500 YL in Arabic mentions ``Arabiya``, apparent news with drum sounders; still at 1545 but JBA. It`s the General Program starting, of SRI/SBA per WRTH; we do miss the more distinctive name BSKSA, maybe suspended because SA is now more of a murderous Crown-Princedom (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SCOTLAND [non]. 5800, UT Sat Dec 5 at 0301, classical music on WRMI via Bonaire SDR, Karelia Suite by Sibelius, so it`s `Encore` from Radio Tumbril. This first transmission of the week is still missing from Brice Avery`s publicity; times UT, frequencies kHz:

This week's programme starts with some Sibelius, then a piece by Rameau, followed by something contemporary-part of UFO by Michael Daugherty. Haydn next - Allegro con Brio from his Symphony 44, after which we will hear some monastic music from 12th century France. Part of a modern Quartet piece after that, then some Ravel, a Schubert duet, and finally Celestial Fantasy by Alan Hovhaness.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search. A very good site for online SDR receivers all over the world is http://kiwisdr.com/public/  Click the 'Map' button in the top left of the screen.

** TURKEY [and non]. 5980, Dec 4 at 2143, Turkish music at S7-S9 from VOT in Turkish as scheduled 17-22 to Europe and USward. Then on 5940 more music, sounds like same, switching back and forth, so think it`s also VOT, but did no match on a second receiver to be positive. Instead, Aoki & EiBi agree that 5940 at 20-22 is Algeria via France (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 11720, Fri Dec 4 at 2158 I catch just the outro on VOA-GB VG signal backwards of `Music Time in Africa`. Hyper Heather has a different way of expressing the show schedule, but still misses this very broadcast, the only one we may easily hear. She also keeps saying ``hundred`` after times not ending in :00. (Of course it`s not really hundred-anything in a 60-minute per hour clock system.) Re my previous comment about this one hour on VOA -- despite my critiques, I do not begrudge MTIA, just the other six hours of the week which ought to cast broadly a wide variety of American music genres. This is after all, the Voice of America, not Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Propagation News – 6 December 2020

What a great week it was for HF propagation. We started it off with the CQ Worldwide CW HF contest, which saw some DX openings up to 28MHz and solid DX being worked on 21MHz. The only downside was an M-class solar flare, which was launched off the Sun on Sunday. It was a big one, but luckily it didn’t affect the UK. The eruption in the sunspot occurred when the sunspot was not pointed toward Earth. This does, however, serve as a warning that we can expect more solar flares over the coming years as Solar Cycle 25 progresses.

The rest of last week saw the Solar Flux Index decline slightly to 105 by Thursday. Nevertheless, daytime maximum useable frequencies were generally above 21MHz for a lot of the time, with occasional openings on 28MHz.

Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will decline to the 90s and then the low 80s as the week progress. However, active region 2790 has rotated to be Earth-facing and this may keep the SFI higher than predicted – only time will tell. On Thursday another potential active region was also coming into view. If it develops, we could see the SFI in the high 90s or even topping 100 once again.

The good news is the Kp index is predicted to remain low, reflecting the more settled geomagnetic conditions. A large coronal hole will become Earth-centric by the 5th, which could result in an elevated Kp index at the end of the weekend – although this will be dependent on how the Bz field of any solar wind is oriented. A south-facing Bz field more easily couples with the Earth’s magnetic field, letting solar particles enter the ionosphere. Only time will tell.

VHF and up:

Not much terrestrial VHF propagation to look forward to this week, with things looking cold and unsettled. A slack low-pressure system will occupy the British Isles for much of the next 10 days, so I wouldn’t build up any Tropo hopes. The general unsettled nature of the weather pattern means that rain scatter could be the mode of interest for the GHz bands. You might also find some snow static raises noise levels a bit in some parts of the country.

December is a hot month for meteor scatter. The Puppid-Velids, with a Zenighal Hourly Rate of 10, peaks tomorrow, and the Monocerotids with a Zenithal Hourly Rate of three peaks on Wednesday. These are just an hors d’oeuvre for the Geminids shower, just over a week from now, on the 14th. With ZHR of a whopping 150, the Geminids is usually the best one of the year. Even now the meteor rates will be climbing so if you have reasonable power and a beam for 2, 4 or 6m, get looking for JT mode DX.

It’s a good week for EME too with Moon declination high but declining. We still have long visibility windows all week, with falling path losses until perigee next Sunday. 144MHz sky noise is low at the moment, not reaching 500 kelvin until next Sunday.

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Sunspot Cycle 25 is 1 year old, and increasing solar activity continues to surprise and amaze.

Average daily sunspot numbers more than doubled every week over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago, we reported average daily sunspot numbers of 12. Last week, the average was 27.9. This week the average daily sunspot number at sits at 57.6.

In the past week the highest daily sunspot number was 84 on Sunday, November 29, and solar flux also peaked that day, at 116.3, pushing the week’s average solar flux to 108.1, up from 90.1 over the previous 7 days, and from 79.8 the week prior to that.

Geomagnetic indicators were moderate, despite several solar flares, including a solar flare on November 29 that was the most powerful solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) in the new solar cycle — a sure sign of increasing activity. It was not Earth-directed, however. Here’s a Michigan Live report, and a report received from Frank Donovan, W3LPL.

Predicted solar flux over the next 45 days is 100, 95, 90, 85, and 80 on December 4 – 8; 75 on December 9 – 11; 85 on December 12; 82 on December 13 – 16; 85, 90, and 100 on December 17 – 19; 105 on December 20 – 21; 108 on December 22; 110 on December 23 – 25; 115 on December 26 – 27; 113 on December 28 – 30; 110 on December 31; 105 and 103 on January 1 – 2; 95 on January 3 – 4; 92 and 88 on January 5 – 6; 85 on January 7 – 8; 82 on January 9 – 12; 85, 90, and 100 on January 13 – 15, and 105 on January 16 – 17.

Planetary A index is predicted at 5 on December 4 – 17; 12, 20, and 8 on December 18 – 20; 5 on December 21 – 22; 8, 10, and 8 on December 23 – 25; 5 on December 26 – January 13, and 12, 20, 8, and 5 on January 14 – 17.

F.K. Janda, OK1HH, reports the geomagnetic activity forecast for December 4 – 29. The geomagnetic field will be:

“About 10 days does not make an average, but I can never remember such a sudden sustained increase in SFI as the new cycle begins. Perhaps October 1978 may have been similar, but I assume that flux was already fairly high in the preceding months, and the new cycle was only about a year from the peak.

“Conditions — or at least activity — seemed to be down a bit in the week preceding the CQ World Wide CW contest until Friday, which seemed better. Twenty meters was a bit disappointing at the Saturday November 0000 UTC start, with most DX coming from southern South America.

“D4Z on Cape Verde was loud and continued to be loud through most of the weekend on 20.

“I managed a marginal scatter with Italy beaming at 150° (over Brazil).

“Moving to 40 at 0023 UTC, signals were loud from Germany and Hungary farther south. At 0121, 7Q6M Malawi and CR3W Madeira Islands were logged easily on 40. On 80 at 0220, I could work EU excluding Russia north of the Black Sea area and the Baltic States, but signals were not that loud. 160 was very tough, with large pile-ups on North American DX and not much readable from Africa or Europe.

“I resumed on 20 at 1158 UTC about 10 minutes before sunrise, and the band was already full of loud Europeans even open already to Russia. Signal levels were very good with high activity. R8WF in Asia (but still in the EU Russian Zone 16) was my best DX to the east.

“By 1309, signals from EU were building nicely on 15 from nearly all corners. Some of my first contacts were OH3077F in Finland, RL6M southern Russia, LY4T Lithuania, and UT7NY Ukraine. By 1430, northern EU was mostly gone on 15, but I maintained a good EU QSO rate until about 1522. A brief visit to 10 then found Spain (very weak), Canary Islands, Puerto Rico, French Guiana, and Cayman Islands. Then it was back to 20 with good western EU conditions until about 1700, staying there working Europe until 1721. 5H3EE Tanzania went into my 15-meter log at 1735.

“Starting at 1741, 10 was open well into Chile and Argentina, and a bit less so to Brazil. The 10-meter SA opening was starting to fade at 1900. Back on 20 at 1927, there was a good auroral sporadic-E opening to Scandinavia on 20. ZM1M New Zealand had a good long path signal at 1953, as did VK4TS in Queensland, Australia, shortly after that.

“On 15, starting at 2015, I worked New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and Alaska. A quick check of 10 at 2105 yielded five contacts with loud Hawaiians. I worked the first Japanese station, JA1ZGO, at 2125, but the auroral curtain was like a wall, and only big gun JAs were worked through 2355. I heard three Chinese stations due north from here, but didn’t make any contacts.

“At sunset 2151, southern SA was loud, and I was thrilled to work JR1GSE at 2157. The low-band conditions were not good to northern EU on any band during the evening, but 40 did stay open to some extent to southern EU through 0200. Eighty-meter signals from Europe were down, and signals on 160 very weak.

“I managed some quick QSOs on 40 to UN9L, Kazakhstan; VK3GI, Australia, and ZM1A, New Zealand starting at 1133. Twenty was not fully open to EU at 1152, but much better 10 minutes later.

“I logged many EU over the next 70 minutes and was thrilled to be called by EX8MJ Kyrgyzstan who was weak, and UN0L. At 1304, I found good EU signals on 15, and soon some incredibly loud signals 20, peaking to 30 dB over S-9. Even stations in northern and northeastern Europe were very workable, but weaker.

“4L6QL, Georgia was my best DX to the east. At 1424, there was a weak opening to EU on 10. I logged Italy, Slovak Republic, and France, and CR3DX on Madeira (Africa). At 1524 on 10, I found ZD7BG, St. Helena Island, and at 1603 Croatia, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and 7Q6M Malawi. CR6K in Portugal was still heard at 1730, very late. The opening to EU on 15 lasted late, still okay but fading at 1650. I was able to keep a good EU QSO rate going on 20 through 1743, much later than on Saturday.”

On December 3, N7RP reported from New Mexico:

“This morning a little after 8 AM local time, I worked HS0ZGC (Thailand) on 12 meters on FT8. He was working South American stations, and I did not see any other US stations work HS0ZGC other than me. I am just running 100 W to a vertical, so I have no idea what path it was. It was amazing, since it must have been around midnight there. He immediately uploaded to LoTW, so the contact is confirmed.”

N7RP’s QRZ.com profile includes a narrative about his life in ham radio.

A 6,000-kilometer transequitorial propagation (TEP) contact between Aruba and Argentina on 2 meter SSB was reported.

Mike Schaffer, KA3JAW, reported from Easton, Pennsylvania (FN20jq):

“On Monday, November 30, 11-meter CB (27 MHz) was very active from coast to coast.

“Even if you’re under heavy rain, with severe thunderstorms you still can detect stations via sporadic E well past the 2,600-mile (4,184-kilometer) range. Background noise levels varied between 3 to 5 dBm.

‘Here are the locations I heard, distance, and sporadic-E hops:

    AZ (Tempe) — 2,072 miles (3,334 kilometers) (2x)
    CA (Los Angeles) — 2,384 (3836 kilometers) miles (2x)
    CA (San Diego) — 2,366 miles (3,807 kilometers) (2x)

** AUSTRIA. 6155, Dec 4 at 0133, no signal from Ö-1 into UTwente, so the hours of classical music we enjoyed last night must have been a fluke or a test (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 11905-11910-11915 DRM, Dec 4 at 0145, RNA DRM is VG into TWR Bonaire SDR, 16.9-17.0 SNR, 14.06 kbps, with only occasional quick dropouts, altho only S8 on the meter. Now has a larger variety of one-line headline texts. All-music except for `Nacional` ID at 0147, and it`s the same as on 11780-AM. Really, when 11780 is loud & clear, the DRM version is only a minor improvement. The DRM sked with the SDR has now been amended to show 11910 instead of 11880 for 24 hours. At 0155 I check 6180 into Bonaire for the other RNA AM frequency, but all I hear is China via Cuba, so RNA must be off. Is it the same transmitter for DRM? How many usable transmitters have they, anyway? Can`t tell from WRTH 2020 since EBC is treated as just another station among many in the Domestic sexion, and there is no Brazil in the International sexion where normally the number of and powers of transmitters are shown. Still going with music at 0241, ``Rádio Nacional, 980 kHz``. 0302 and 0401 fuller ID for 980, 11780, 96.1 and Rio frequencies, 1130 and two more, but no mention of 11910 or 6180. Still VG past 0415 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 13785.27 & 13724.21 & 13663.14, Dec 3 at 1604, among the many birdies I have to deal with are these which measure 61.06 or 61.07 kHz apart, surely from some local device, but I am reluctant to start unplugging everything one by one or throwing breaker switches. Of course one wonders if they have something to do with AC which is supposedly at 60.0 Hz. These do not divide out to integral harmonix of 61+ kHz either. The same spans are found on many other parts of the SW dial. Any ideas? (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A. 515-MCW kHz, Dec 3 at 0705, the only NDB I log before shut-eye is here, OS, which is 25 watts from Columbus - Fuler, Ohio, whatever that mean. First time I`ve ever heard this in nightly bandscans, in case our own 515, PN in Ponca City OK, ever revive. I see there are two other 515s listed, in MT and WA. Nor have I heard in an even longer time, 512, HMY in Lexington OK. The 510-529 band is normally vacant except for some utenoise 518 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 21420.3-AM, Dec 3 at 1932, hamgab about equipment, apparently WA6JKN altho often hard to tell if a call mentioned is own or contact`s. Then reply from a K1, and when he hands it back, nothing further heard. The K1 also on a different split frequency, 21420.17-AM, all too obvious when tuning in SSB. These are the OSOB, otherwise you might think 14m be closed, with 21525 WRMI the default JBA carrier. A coast-to-coast contact on 21 MHz would mean climbing F2 MUF, or much less likely double-hop sporadic E. However here I am halfway between them where Es would fit. The DXMAP mainly shows Es MUFs, but also F2 paths if you seek them. WA6JKN is:

Canada’s public broadcaster announces new cuts to Radio Canada International

Officials at CBC/Radio-Canada announced a fresh round of cuts at Radio Canada International (RCI) on Thursday as part of a “major transformation” of the beleaguered international service of Canada’s public broadcaster.

A joint statement released by Radio-Canada executive vice-president Michel Bissonnette and his CBC counterpart, Barbara Williams, said the goal of the transformation was “to ensure that the service remains a strong and relevant voice in the 21st-century media landscape.”

“In its strategic plan Your Stories, Taken to Heart, the public broadcaster committed to ‘taking Canada to the world’ and ‘reflecting contemporary Canada,’” the joint statement said.

“Transforming RCI is a necessary step to allow the service to effectively fulfil the important role it must play in delivering on those commitments.

“To that end, RCI will soon be offering more content in more languages, drawing on the work of CBC/Radio-Canada’s respected news teams to reach new audiences at home and abroad.”

Earlier in the morning Radio-Canada executives held a virtual meeting with RCI employees to inform them of upcoming changes.

In all, the transformation will reduce the number of RCI employees by more than half, from the current 20 to nine, including five journalists assigned to translate and adapt CBC and Radio-Canada articles, three field reporters, and one chief editor.

As part of the announced transformation, the English and French language services of RCI will be eliminated and will be replaced by curated content created by CBC and Radio-Canada respectively.

The remaining Arabic, Chinese and Spanish services will also be reduced in size.

However, two new language services – Punjabi and Tagalog – will be added to the editorial offering presented by RCI, officials said.

RCI content will also get more visibility by being incorporated into CBCNews.ca and Radio-Canada.ca with its own portal page featuring all the languages, the statement said.

RCI apps will be folded into the CBC News and Radio-Canada Info mobile apps, while the service’s five existing apps will be deleted, the statement added.

Under the new plan, RCI’s operations will focus on three main areas: translating and adapting a curated selection of articles from CBCNews.ca and Radio-Canada.ca sites; producing a new weekly podcast in each RCI language; and producing reports from the field in Chinese, Arabic and Punjabi.

“This transformation will help bring RCI’s high-quality, relevant content to more people around the globe and allow them to discover our country’s rich culture and diversity,” the statement said.

The union representing Radio-Canada employees lambasted the move as a “rampage.”

“It feels like Groundhog Day with more cuts to RCI under the guise of transformation,” said Pierre Toussignant, president of Syndicat des communications de Radio-Canada (SCRC).

In 2012, CBC/Radio-Canada slashed RCI’s budget by nearly 80 per cent, forcing it to abandon shortwave radio broadcasting altogether. The cuts also resulted in significant layoffs and the closure of RCI’s Russian, Ukrainian and Portuguese language services.

Amigos de la Onda Corta es un programa de Radio Exterior de España dedicado a las telecomunicaciones y a los oyentes de emisoras de Onda Corta (SW) que tienen como pasatiempo o dedicación especial la captación de las señales de las emisoras extranjeras y el envío de controles de escucha. El desarrollo de las Tecnologías de la Información y de la Comunicación.

Es un programa semanal, que dirige y presenta Antonio Buitrago.

Los medios de comunicación se han tenido que adecuar a las nuevas tecnologías. La radio es uno de los que mejor han sabido aliarse con internet y las redes sociales. Desde hace tiempo, los podcasts forman parte de la razón de ser de una emisora. La radio lineal y la no lineal conviven para ofrecer contenidos dependiendo de los intereses y usos de los oyentes. Ofrecemos un fragmento del programa de REE A golpe de bit, donde se abordó el podcast, la radio a la carta. Intervienen Javier Hernández Bravo, director y presentador del programa de RNE Radiogramas, y Gorka Zumeta, consultor y formador en Comunicación.
