BTW, if you hear a street named Peoria, it`s probably from Tulsa, as it would be rather redundant for Peoria to name a street Peoria. There is however, another major Peoria artery, in Phœnix AZ but it`s E-W, while Tulsa`s is N-S. Is there a Tulsa or Phœnix street in Peoria IL? More downtown Tulsa streets are named for: Boston, Cincinnati, Denver, Boulder, Cheyenne, Elgin, Frankfort, Hartford, Kenosha, Madison, Norfolk, some of them in alphabetical order. ** ALGERIA [non]. 6050, July 18 at 0431, S9+5/25 beepery and Arabic from RTA via its usual defective Issoudun, FRANCE transmitter. Tough luck, HCJB, should it want to air this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** ANTARCTICA. July 18 at 1634 UT I remind the WOR iog that another test from LRA36 is imminent, according to Adrian Korol via Horacio Nigro, as previously published and on WORLD OF RADIO, ``Saturday, July 18 and 25, between 1700 pm [sic] and 2300 UTC, there will be test broadcasts of LRA 36 on the frequency of 15476 khz USB mode.``
Then I tune in 15475.98-CUSB ``early`` at 1637 via Brazilian SDR to find it`s already running! Immediately hearing an ID during `Corazón Antártico` program, of vocal/tango music with similar variety of IDs between every piece, including at 1640, 1647, 1650, 1654, 1657. At 1642, brief QRM(?) of tone, ``hola, hola`` and counting but never again. Some of the IDs refer to the regular Wednesday C. A. program at 11-13 local time = 14-16 UT.
At 1700 it becomes clear the preceding has been a prélude to the real show which sounds live but isn`t: ID with 15476 frequency, briefly in English and Russian(!), anthem? Greetings and welcome to the 19th program in the series, 1702 TC for 11:02, credits for on-mike and produxion personnel, geo coordinates of Esperanza base, and they make clear it`s miércoles for them. At 1704 they say this program will be repeated Saturday at 17 UTC, i.e. right now; telephone number and other contact info, inviting DXers.
Long interview follows but I still don`t learn much about what is axually being done at Esperanza base. 1731 mentions LRA24, Rio Grande, I think the QTH of interviewee. ** NORTH AMERICA. 6935-USB, July 19 at 0100, CW partially copied includes -NOVA- so this is R. Nova as publicized earlier via MARE; RoboYL ID, ``You are listening to Radio Nova`` and gmail address. Into familiar Mexican piece on Hammond? organ. But only S3-S5 vs heavy storm noise peaking higher than that, too bad to enjoy. ** NORTH AMERICA. 6960-USB, July 19 at 0103, much stronger S9 than Nova on 6935, but annoying QRM from a local artifact blob circa 6961.3 I can`t get rid of (but LSB would have been fine, if any); C&W and then blues music. ** NORTH AMERICA [non]. 6070, Sat July 18 at 1801 via UTwente SDR, Texas Radio Shortwave has started via Channel 292, GERMANY, with `The Yellow Rose of Texas` theme, alla marcia. I was asked to publicize this, which I did on WOR 2043 and also a reminder a sesquihour before to the WOR iog. Best sound is in AMSYNC mode at 5.59 kHz bandwidth, where it rates -65 to -70 dbm; SINPO I guess about 45444.
Announcer is Third Mate Susan, a RoboYL. Introduces Robert Kipp, Germany, who constructed the playlist and we hear him reel off a long list of performers about to be heard; but there are no such announcements during the music, seguè from one to the next, leaving us to guess who`s singing what. And guess what? Not a single female vocalist, altho one tenor might have been.
Right after Kipp, before the first song an unreadable burst in somelang, maybe Spanish. Robert Kipp is with the Rhein-Main-Radio-Club, which was the first source of WORLD OF RADIO podcasts, and still provides them:

** U S A. 251-MCW, July 18 at 0449 UT, ND beacon AM is JBA, 100 watts from AMarillo TX, the only extrastatal one audible, but I am surprised the storm noise level be low enough to allow this, considering how high it is on lower SW bands. ** U S A. 17775-, July 18 at 1452, like yesterday, KVOH on early, prior to nominal start on English Saturdays of 1500, praise song in English, S9/+10 probably sporadic-E-helped, and with modulation sufficient. At 1505 I check remotes in their Carib target how well it arrive as `Wavescan` is in progress: JBA at the TWR SDRs in Bonaire, DR, and slightly better at closer Key West, but insuff; will have two or three dozen more chances to hear it on WRMI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 5085, UT Sunday July 19 at 0020, Theater Organ [Not] in the Ozarx is already underway on WTWW-3, so I immediately switch to $tereo webcast; evidently a performance from Indianapolis, ends at 0041, back to rock music so must have started this week circa 0010 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 657 & 683 kHz, July 18 at 0457, peaks of IBOC noise, which means it`s back on 670 WSCR Chicago. But not surrounding sibling station 780 WBBM. This reference does not show it back on WSCR since 2019: http://www.topazdesigns.com/iboc/station-list.html
Background on this and one of our WOR-supporting friends, William Hassig. After I mentioned no IBOC bothering SPAIN on 684 kHz, on April 4, 2020, Tom Jasinski wrote from Joliet:
``Glenn: The IBOC for WSCR 670 and WBBM 780 has been off for over a month now. Both stations now share the same tower.``
On May 9, William Hassig, Mount Prospect IL, explained:
``Combined 670/780 site. I'm fine, thanks. In a recent WOR I heard that WBBM 780 is now on the same tower with WSCR 670. Last week I drove west on Golf road (IL58) to Martingale road and turned south. I drove past the WGN 720 transmitter site with its main rower and self supporting spare tower. Martingale rd becomes Rohlwing road at that point. I continued south past the former WBBM 780 site and not only was everything gone but the property had been sold and a commercial building was being constructed. I continued south to Army Trail road and headed west past the WSCR 670 site. Its main tower is taller than needed for the 670 frequency and on top is a multibay antenna for Spanish language WLEY 107.9 FM. I took with me an old "el cheapo" TRF radio with one gang tuning that I had picked up free as a loss leader at Montgomery Ward many years ago. It is basically an amplified crystal set with resonant ferrite antenna. I tuned it to 720 before leaving home and left it there. As I passed the 670/780 site both stations came out of the radio. In front of the old brick building was a small SUV with the 780 logo on it. I looked on Google earth and it still shows the old 780 site.``
Then, from him on July 10:
``Hello everybody, I'm home after an unplanned 29 day odyssey. On the afternoon of Thursday 11 June I was riding my bicycle south on the sidewalk on the east side of a 4 lane street. As I was riding across a cross street on the crosswalk some southbound doofus made a sudden left turn in front of me in his van. I collided with his drivers side door and the rest of the van did a number on me. I had a gash on the right rear of my scalp and I was knocked out immediately before I hit the pavement. I woke up in the hospital in a cat scan device then the took x-rays and found that I had a broken scapula in my right shoulder. On Friday 12 June they sent me across the street to a nursing home where I needed help doing just about everything. On Friday 19 June they transported me back to the hospital at 6am to have an operation where they put in a metal plate. That afternoon they transported me back to the nursing home for more physical and occupational therapy. I was just released to go home today at 11am. Now I have to use a cane to walk. Anyway, that is where I was all this time.``

I was asked to publicize this, which I did on WOR 2043 and also a reminder a sesquihour before to the WOR iog. Best sound is in AMSYNC mode at 5.59 kHz bandwidth, where it rates -65 to -70 dbm; SINPO I guess about 45444.
Announcer is Third Mate Susan, a RoboYL. Introduces Robert Kipp, Germany, who constructed the playlist and we hear him reel off a long list of performers about to be heard; but there are no such announcements during the music, seguè from one to the next, leaving us to guess who`s singing what. And guess what? Not a single female vocalist, altho one tenor might have been.
Right after Kipp, before the first song an unreadable burst in somelang, maybe Spanish. Robert Kipp is with the Rhein-Main-Radio-Club, which was the first source of WORLD OF RADIO podcasts, and still provides them:

Background on this and one of our WOR-supporting friends, William Hassig. After I mentioned no IBOC bothering SPAIN on 684 kHz, on April 4, 2020, Tom Jasinski wrote from Joliet:
``Glenn: The IBOC for WSCR 670 and WBBM 780 has been off for over a month now. Both stations now share the same tower.``
On May 9, William Hassig, Mount Prospect IL, explained:
``Combined 670/780 site. I'm fine, thanks. In a recent WOR I heard that WBBM 780 is now on the same tower with WSCR 670. Last week I drove west on Golf road (IL58) to Martingale road and turned south. I drove past the WGN 720 transmitter site with its main rower and self supporting spare tower. Martingale rd becomes Rohlwing road at that point. I continued south past the former WBBM 780 site and not only was everything gone but the property had been sold and a commercial building was being constructed. I continued south to Army Trail road and headed west past the WSCR 670 site. Its main tower is taller than needed for the 670 frequency and on top is a multibay antenna for Spanish language WLEY 107.9 FM. I took with me an old "el cheapo" TRF radio with one gang tuning that I had picked up free as a loss leader at Montgomery Ward many years ago. It is basically an amplified crystal set with resonant ferrite antenna. I tuned it to 720 before leaving home and left it there. As I passed the 670/780 site both stations came out of the radio. In front of the old brick building was a small SUV with the 780 logo on it. I looked on Google earth and it still shows the old 780 site.``
Then, from him on July 10:
``Hello everybody, I'm home after an unplanned 29 day odyssey. On the afternoon of Thursday 11 June I was riding my bicycle south on the sidewalk on the east side of a 4 lane street. As I was riding across a cross street on the crosswalk some southbound doofus made a sudden left turn in front of me in his van. I collided with his drivers side door and the rest of the van did a number on me. I had a gash on the right rear of my scalp and I was knocked out immediately before I hit the pavement. I woke up in the hospital in a cat scan device then the took x-rays and found that I had a broken scapula in my right shoulder. On Friday 12 June they sent me across the street to a nursing home where I needed help doing just about everything. On Friday 19 June they transported me back to the hospital at 6am to have an operation where they put in a metal plate. That afternoon they transported me back to the nursing home for more physical and occupational therapy. I was just released to go home today at 11am. Now I have to use a cane to walk. Anyway, that is where I was all this time.``

Sunday July 19th will see the kick off of the FRS 40 years 'Summer Splash' Event.
Opposite to previous years, FRS will be on air on three consecutive
Sunday evenings. All programmes will be thematic, like we did in the
past few years. Instead of full programming, each of these Sunday
evenings will last two hours and will be aired between 19:00- 21:00 UTC/
21:00- 23:00 CEST.

At 0054, 5130 is buried in noise but I can tell it is AAAWWW, not the music on the A51 webcast. 6160- is also audible, weaker than 7490.
0100, 7490 webcast, AAAWWW wraps up just in time for Hal Turner theme.
0217, A51 webcast is still running with music so I listen again for a while. DJ says this show is all-beer songs and back-announces a number of titles; in a six-week theme series, last week wine, next week marijuana, so put in your requests now to Zombo`s Record Party on FB, but this show is pre-recorded not live.
IIRC, Zombo has appeared on WBCQ before, and he does mention WBCQ among other stations, but his name is not to be found on the WBCQ website schedule, nor even the Archive. Si bien la emisora pionera, de acuerdo a los historiadores ecuatorianos, fue radio el Prado que salió al aire en 1929 en Riobamba, creada por el ingeniero Carlos Cordobés Borja, propietario de una empresa textil. A partir de allí la radiotelefonía comenzó a distribuirse en las diferentes ciudades del país…

PROPAGATION BEACON "ON AIR"
One of the many things I do to help the amateur radio hobby is to operate and maintain a "propagation beacon" station using a FCC approved Amateur HF Transmitter for [CW].
There are many such stations located around the world that are operated by other amateur radio operators. Simply stated: A propagation beacon station constantly transmits a signal using morse code (CW) on a specific frequency. PROPAGATION BEACON "ON AIR"
One of the many things I do to help the amateur radio hobby is to operate and maintain a "propagation beacon" station using a FCC approved Amateur HF Transmitter for [CW].
There are many such stations located around the world that are operated by other amateur radio operators. Simply stated: A propagation beacon station constantly transmits a signal using morse code (CW) on a specific frequency. If an amateur radio operator or short wave listener hears a beacon coming from another part of the world it usually means that they can either hear, or in the case of an amateur radio operator talk to, stations operating from the same area as the beacon they monitored.

Propagation News – 19 July 2020
Last week a coronal mass ejection caught space weather experts by surprise, sending the Kp index up to four for around nine hours on Tuesday. The stream had a strong southward component in its Bz field, which meant it could more easily couple with the Earth’s magnetic field. The weak CME passage was enough to generate aurora at higher latitudes. Otherwise, the Sun was relatively quiet with zero sunspots and a solar flux index of 68-69 all week. Ten metre sporadic E has become less prevalent this week, with Thursday showing mostly weak openings to Mauritania, Spain, Sicily and Corsica.
Next week NOAA still predicts more of the same with a solar flux index of 68 and zero sunspots. There are signs of coronal holes on the Sun’s surface, which could result in unsettled geomagnetic conditions at times due to high-speed solar wind streams. The STEREO Ahead spacecraft’s extreme ultraviolet view shows signs of a hot spot on the Sun, which will rotate into view over the next week. This could be the precursor of a sunspot, but only time will tell. Meanwhile, daytime F2-layer maximum usable frequencies (MUFs) are still exceeding 20m, with occasional openings on 17m. Sporadic E openings still occur virtually daily with openings up to 10m. Night-time F-layer MUFs occasionally exceed 20m, especially up to around midnight.
VHF and up:
This weekend we have developing high pressure over southern Britain, and it should provide some good tropo opportunities, especially across the Channel and over Biscay into Spain and down the west coast of Africa. It’s also worth noting that the Mediterranean is in full-on summer mode with strong ducts over the sea from most of the usual holiday destinations, for example EA6 to IS0. These tropo conditions should last into the middle of the week. After that, the models seem to suggest a return to more unsettled conditions as a front moves south bringing rain and heavy showers, some thundery, particularly in the south, and this weather type will last into the following weekend. So, there should be some strong rain scatter conditions on the GHz bands in the second half of the week.
There have been some very strong sporadic E events all the way up to 2m during the last week. The traditional components like jet streams make a strong showing on the upper air charts, so I would expect to see further sporadic E popping up next week, so check the bands mid-morning and early evening. With the Moon at peak declination today and path losses falling as we approach perigee next weekend, it’s a good week for EME. Although 144MHz sky noise is low all week, the exception is Monday afternoon when the Sun and Moon are close in the sky. There are no major meteor showers this week, so keep looking around local dawn for the best random contacts. (rsgb.org)

Radio Six International - more shortwave broadcasts
Following successful live broadcasts on 6070kHz on June 6th and July 2nd, Radio Six International (based in Glasgow, Scotland) will continue monthly broadcasts for the time being. The K7RA Solar Update
It turns out last week’s bulletin ARLP028 did not get posted to the ARRL web site and did not go out via the usual channels. If you need a copy, check the bulletin archive link given at the end of this bulletin (perhaps tomorrow), or email a request to the author at k7ra@arrl.net.
Over the past week, July 9-15, just one day had sunspot activity, and that was July 10 when the daily sunspot number was 12. The sunspot was number 2766, returning for a second appearance from old Cycle 24.
On July 16 Spaceweather.com reported “a tiny proto-sunspot” exhibiting polarity indicating Cycle 25. But later it seemed to be gone, and every time I thought I’d spotted something, it turned out to be dirt on my computer screen.
From the previous week to this week, average daily sunspot number declined from 3.3 to 1.7, but average daily solar flux stayed the same, at 68.5.
Predicted solar flux remains low, further evidence of this long, deep solar minimum. All flux values for the next 45 days are predicted to stay below 70. 69 is the predicted 10.7 cm solar flux on July 17-22, 68 on July 23-24, 69 on July 25 through August 1, 68 again on August 2-20, 69 on August 21-28 and 68 on August 29-30.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on July 17-30, then 8 and 10 on July 31 through August 1, 5 on August 2-8, 8 on August 9-10, 5 on August 11-26, 8 on August 27-28, and 5 on August 29-30.

George Hall, N2CG, reported, “I'm located in Northern New Jersey (FN20wv) and on July 11 starting around 8 AM EDT (1200Z) and for the next eleven hours the 6-meter band on FT8 mode was open to five continents.
“All parts of Europe were coming in for over 10 hours and I managed to work 11 different DXCC entities, including JW7QIA in Svalbard for an all-time new one.
“In Africa, the Canary Islands were coming in and there were a few Caribbean stations as well as many areas of the US and parts of northern South America workable with strong signals.
“At 2200Z I had to go off the air due to an approaching thunderstorm. When I returned to the air at 2240Z the HamSpots DX cluster was showing I had spotted over a dozen Japanese stations on 6-meter FT8! For the next 25 minutes I managed to work six Japanese stations, with received signals ranging from -06 to -18 dBm. Mike Schaffer, KA3JAW, of Easton, Pennsylvania wrote: "On Sunday July 12, at 1 PM local time (1700 UTC), heard and worked Elye, KI5DLL, from Malvern, Arkansas (95 miles away from the Texas state line in Texarkana) at a distance of 1,057 miles. Initially his signal report was 1x1, but later rose to 3x3.
“On Thursday, July 14, at 11 AM local time (1500 UTC), I heard Mark, KI4SWB, from Melbourne Beach, Florida at 924 miles. His signal report was 4x7, peaking +30 dB with deep fading. Both contacts were on the 10-meter FM simplex frequency of 29.600 MHz.
“Considering operators on the lower segment 10 meter band (28 MHz) are having a rough time making DX contacts using SSB at a 3-kHz bandwidth, which is four times narrower compared to FM, it is somewhat amazing that I am starting to hear these type of emissions in the depths of a Solar Minimum. I urge everyone to continue monitoring 29.600 FM simplex. Even if the frequency sounds dead, give a call anyway. You might be pleasantly surprised."
Mike sent an update on July 16: "Today, at 11:53 AM local (1553 UTC), I heard Lloyd, KC5FM, from Newkirk, Oklahoma, north of Oklahoma City. He was involved in a conversation, so I waited until be finished and then called him. To my surprise he returned my call with a 3x3 signal report. The distance was 1,203 miles. This is my FM record to date!”

Sunspot numbers for July 9 through 15, 2020 were 0, 12, 0, 0, 0, 0, and 0, with a mean of 1.7. 10.7 cm flux was 68.7, 68.8, 68.7, 67.6, 68.2, 68.9, and 68.4, with a mean of 68.5. Estimated planetary A indices were 4, 3, 3, 3, 6, 11, and 5, with a mean of 5. Middle latitude A index was 4, 3, 2, 3, 7, 9, and 6, with a mean of 4.9. (arrl.org)
Over the past week, July 9-15, just one day had sunspot activity, and that was July 10 when the daily sunspot number was 12. The sunspot was number 2766, returning for a second appearance from old Cycle 24.
On July 16 Spaceweather.com reported “a tiny proto-sunspot” exhibiting polarity indicating Cycle 25. But later it seemed to be gone, and every time I thought I’d spotted something, it turned out to be dirt on my computer screen.
From the previous week to this week, average daily sunspot number declined from 3.3 to 1.7, but average daily solar flux stayed the same, at 68.5.
Predicted solar flux remains low, further evidence of this long, deep solar minimum. All flux values for the next 45 days are predicted to stay below 70. 69 is the predicted 10.7 cm solar flux on July 17-22, 68 on July 23-24, 69 on July 25 through August 1, 68 again on August 2-20, 69 on August 21-28 and 68 on August 29-30.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on July 17-30, then 8 and 10 on July 31 through August 1, 5 on August 2-8, 8 on August 9-10, 5 on August 11-26, 8 on August 27-28, and 5 on August 29-30.

George Hall, N2CG, reported, “I'm located in Northern New Jersey (FN20wv) and on July 11 starting around 8 AM EDT (1200Z) and for the next eleven hours the 6-meter band on FT8 mode was open to five continents.
“All parts of Europe were coming in for over 10 hours and I managed to work 11 different DXCC entities, including JW7QIA in Svalbard for an all-time new one.
“In Africa, the Canary Islands were coming in and there were a few Caribbean stations as well as many areas of the US and parts of northern South America workable with strong signals.
“At 2200Z I had to go off the air due to an approaching thunderstorm. When I returned to the air at 2240Z the HamSpots DX cluster was showing I had spotted over a dozen Japanese stations on 6-meter FT8! For the next 25 minutes I managed to work six Japanese stations, with received signals ranging from -06 to -18 dBm. So, working Japan not only gave me an all-time new one, it also gave me Asia; the last continent I needed for my 6-meter Worked All Continents award, which I'll be able to apply for when I receive a paper QSL card from one of the Japanese stations. Amigos de la Onda Corta es un programa de Radio Exterior de España dedicado a las telecomunicaciones y a los oyentes de emisoras de Onda Corta (SW) que tienen como pasatiempo o dedicación especial la captación de las señales de las emisoras extranjeras y el envío de controles de escucha. El desarrollo de las Tecnologías de la Información y de la Comunicación.
Es un programa semanal, que dirige y presenta Antonio Buitrago.

La Fundación Telefónica ha presentado su estudio anual que detalla el nivel de digitalización del país. La pandemia de la covid-19 ha trastocado la situación y se señala que la digitalización de las empresas y la formación digital son claves para reactivar la economía y generar empleo tras el coronavirus. Como datos llamativos, destaca que en España tres de cada cuatro hogares tienen cobertura de fibra óptica y nueve de cada diez ciudadanos son usuarios de Internet. El informe detalla que nuestro país ocupaba en 2019 el undécimo puesto en la lista de los 28 Estados miembros de la Unión Europea en el Índice de la Economía y la Sociedad Digitales, superando la media comunitaria. Por otro lado, recomienda que las pequeñas y medianas empresas deban apostar por la digitalización, ya que se están quedando rezagadas en el proceso de digitalización. También se señala que la capacitación digital es la única oportunidad que tienen ante la situación actual..
LA ORQUESTA DE RADIO TELEVISIÓN ESPAÑOLA ha cumplido 55 años. Comenzó su andadura el 27 de mayo de 1965 como una de las más jóvenes de la radio y televisión europeas. Se presentó oficialmente en el Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid junto a su director fundador, Igor Markevitch, luego pasaron otros maestros hasta el actual director, Pablo González.
RADIO MUHLER, DE BAFATÁ: La segunda ciudad de Guinea Bissau emite una radio muy especial dedicada a la mujer. Tiene el patrocinio de Naciones Unidas y cuenta con la ayuda de la ONG española Periodistas Solidarios Asociación de la Prensa de Sevilla. Emite contenidos que hacen más visibles y empoderan a las mujeres de la región, y pretende ser una experiencia radiofónica exportable a otras partes de África.

Amigos de la Onda Corta es un programa de Radio Exterior de España dedicado a las telecomunicaciones y a los oyentes de emisoras de Onda Corta (SW) que tienen como pasatiempo o dedicación especial la captación de las señales de las emisoras extranjeras y el envío de controles de escucha. El desarrollo de las Tecnologías de la Información y de la Comunicación.
Es un programa semanal, que dirige y presenta Antonio Buitrago.
En el programa de hoy: SOCIEDAD DIGITAL EN ESPAÑA 2019
La Fundación Telefónica ha presentado su estudio anual que detalla el nivel de digitalización del país. La pandemia de la covid-19 ha trastocado la situación y se señala que la digitalización de las empresas y la formación digital son claves para reactivar la economía y generar empleo tras el coronavirus. Como datos llamativos, destaca que en España tres de cada cuatro hogares tienen cobertura de fibra óptica y nueve de cada diez ciudadanos son usuarios de Internet. El informe detalla que nuestro país ocupaba en 2019 el undécimo puesto en la lista de los 28 Estados miembros de la Unión Europea en el Índice de la Economía y la Sociedad Digitales, superando la media comunitaria. Por otro lado, recomienda que las pequeñas y medianas empresas deban apostar por la digitalización, ya que se están quedando rezagadas en el proceso de digitalización. También se señala que la capacitación digital es la única oportunidad que tienen ante la situación actual..
LA ORQUESTA DE RADIO TELEVISIÓN ESPAÑOLA ha cumplido 55 años. Comenzó su andadura el 27 de mayo de 1965 como una de las más jóvenes de la radio y televisión europeas. Se presentó oficialmente en el Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid junto a su director fundador, Igor Markevitch, luego pasaron otros maestros hasta el actual director, Pablo González.
RADIO MUHLER, DE BAFATÁ: La segunda ciudad de Guinea Bissau emite una radio muy especial dedicada a la mujer. Tiene el patrocinio de Naciones Unidas y cuenta con la ayuda de la ONG española Periodistas Solidarios Asociación de la Prensa de Sevilla. Emite contenidos que hacen más visibles y empoderan a las mujeres de la región, y pretende ser una experiencia radiofónica exportable a otras partes de África.

Special VORW Radio International broadcasts this weekend
Hello shortwave listeners! I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be doing a special broadcast of VORW Radio International on Saturday the 18th of July and Sunday the 19th of July. This is purely being done for the fun of it and no other reason.
The show will feature music from the 1960s to Present, listener music requests, comments and responses to listener emails. Really I just hope for it to be something enjoyable to listen to!
There will be a 1 Hour show on Saturday and a 2 Hour show on Sunday. The broadcasts will be transmitted live for listeners in Europe from Moosbrunn, Austria and repeated for listeners in North America from WRMI in Florida.

Vatican Radio’s English Africa Programme 1950 - 2020
It is now 89 years since Vatican Radio was inaugurated. The first Radio Message was in Latin by Pope Pius XI on 12 February 1931.
The English Programme was launched six years later in 1937 and English language broadcasts to Africa began in 1950. However, it was not until 1979 that the English Africa Service as we know it today, was created out of the English Programme to respond to the changing trends on the continent.
An evening bulletin on shortwave
The English Africa Service began as a shortwave evening broadcast to listeners in the English-speaking countries of Africa, airing mainly news of the Holy See and the Church in western countries. Also included in its programming at that initial stage were lessons of Catechism, the lives of the saints and African proverbs. The programmes were broadcast on shortwave through a giant rotating transmitter at the Santa Maria di Galeria transmission centre in the north-western outskirts of Rome. The FM broadcasts to the diaspora in Italy were instead relayed through an antenna located on top of the Vatican Radio Museum inside Vatican City.
Cassette tapes for Africa
According to Sean Lovett, former head of the English language programme and member of the committee that set up the English Africa Service, the initial programme was the same as the one for Europe, North America and Oceania but with just a few changes to suit the listeners in Africa. There were also pre-recorded programmes sent directly to the faithful on the continent known as (Cassette) Tapes for Africa.
An English Service for Africa with a new vision
Lovett says they gave serious consideration to the following before setting up the service.
“One, understanding what the real issues were that concerned the people in Africa. So, identifying questions like healthcare, justice, peace; the issues that were of concern to people who were listening in Africa. The second challenge was to overturn that colonialist, European vision of Africa as a continent where only bad things happen and try to create a new vision of Africa, a positive vision of Africa as a place that can serve as an example to the rest of the world in so many things,” explained Lovett.
KiSwahili Gospel readings on the English Africa Service (1993)
In 1993, the English Africa Service started daily broadcasts of the day’s Gospel readings in KiSwahili (Swahili), a Bantu language and lingua franca in eastern Africa. A year later, it became an established language programme of Vatican Radio under the English Africa Service. KiSwahili is widely spoken in Tanzania and Kenya and some regions of Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique. An estimated 120 million people, if not more, speak or understand KiSwahili.
Short-lived Hausa Service
Another important milestone in the history of the English Africa Service - though short-lived - was the creation in 2002 of daily broadcasts in Hausa, a Chadic language spoken by approximately between 100 – 150 million people. Historically, it is considered a lingua franca across much of Western Africa. The 15-minute programme was centred on Christian formation and was transmitted at 9 am Rome time, immediately after the traditional English Africa Service programme. The programme in Hausa was a joint production by Vatican Radio staff in collaboration with the then Centre of Social Communications of Kaduna, in Nigeria.
First African Synod and a new format
The current half-hour daily broadcast of English Africa took its format in 1995, a year after the first African Synod. The format covers a wide range of themes recommended in the apostolic exhortation, Ecclesia in Africa (The Church in Africa) of Pope St. John Paul II in 1995. Further elements were introduced after the publication of Africae Munus (The Commitment of Africa) by Pope emeritus Benedict XVI after the 2009 Second African Synod.
So, apart from news about the Holy Father, activities of the Holy See and the Church in the world, the English Africa daily programme has features and segments dedicated to the life of the Church in Africa, issues of justice, peace, reconciliation, development, culture and the role of young people in the Church and society, all tailored to respond to the challenges facing the continent. Added to these is a daily round-up of news on the socio-political happenings in Africa that we call, Africa News Panorama.
Dawn of digital era
In 2017, our daily broadcast for listeners in Rome was moved from the FM platform to Digital Radio DAB+. Moreover, our shortwave broadcasts to Africa are now relayed from a transmission station in Madagascar.
Website articles on contemporary African Church news
The changing pattern in the broadcast media and the impact social media is having on the way we communicate has warranted a shift to some form of convergence journalism. So, apart from our traditional channels, we now publish website articles on some of the contemporary Church stories making news on the continent. This amplifies the voices and views of the Church in Africa. It has been an important development because it seals the communication process as two-way from the universal Church and the other way round.
The daily podcast
Our daily programme can be downloaded and listened to at any time of the day from the podcast section of our portal www.vaticannews.va. We also have a presence on Facebook through the English programme’s fb page.
English Africa Service re-transmitted on Catholic FM Radios
Meanwhile, on the continent of Africa, about 40 Catholic radio stations, in addition to radio stations of the Radio Maria Network, retransmit our daily programme in English. This ensures that we reach millions who do not have shortwave radio sets or places where the shortwave signal is weak.
Most of the Catholic radio stations that re-transmit our programmes are owned by various African Catholic dioceses, parishes, religious congregations and some by the Radio Maria network.
A request to send the programme through WhatsApp is being considered.
Staff
The nucleus staff of the English Africa Service comprises four persons originally from Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia, along with two colleagues from Tanzania for the KiSwahili language programme. However, we have several collaborators, correspondents, friends and stringers, and Bishops’ Conference personnel who constantly update us with news and information on the African continent. Then there are the students of Rome’s Pontifical Universities - priests, nuns, seminarians, lay-persons who regularly work with us.
On a yearly basis, we receive on average between three to four or more students who come for a period of Internship with either the English Africa Service or our KiSwahili programme.
Growing our network in Africa
As we look to the future, the greatest challenge for the Africa Service, in general, is how to create a network of those radio stations and dioceses in Africa for feedback and further exchange of news on the activities of the Church.
