TEXAS RADIO SHORTWAVE to BROADCAST NEW MUSIC PROGRAM on JULY 18, 2020

GULF OF MEXICO, July 3, 2020/ - Texas Radio Shortwave, an American free radio station, today announced the first in a series of every-so-often programs featuring listener-curated music.

The inaugural Treasure Chest of Texas Music will hold Texas artists’ songs selected by German listener Robert Kipp. It will be broadcast at 1800 UTC on July 18, 2020. International commercial broadcaster Channel 292 in Germany will transmit the program on 3955 kHz and 6070 kHz with a power of 10 kW.

Listeners outside Europe may wish to tune to this broadcast using a European software-defined radio (SDR) like the one at the University of Twente in The Netherlands. The URL is http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/.

A limited-edition commemorative electronic verification will be available for listeners sending correct, detailed reception reports. The email address is texasradiosw@gmail.com.

Reception reports must include times, song titles, the text of announcements, a SINPO/SIO signal rating, information on receiver and antenna, and comments on the program content.

Listeners using a remote SDR should mention that. Texas Radio Shortwave would like to receive audio clips along with written reports.

North American free radio stations are not licensed. Hobbyists run most of them purely for fun, although some have political or religious agendas. Most free radio stations transmit using Single Side Band with modern amateur radio equipment; others use Amplitude Modulated vintage or homemade equipment. It is common for free radio stations to broadcast images using Slow Scan TV.

Texas Radio Shortwave sails in international waters off the South Texas coast. Its programs are broadcast in North America and Europe.

** U S A. 7490v, 6160v, 5130v, UT Sat July 4 after 0000, for AAAWWW, these WBCQs are detectable, very poor signals with storm noise; all I hear at a quick check is Angela overmodulating an opinion on current events.

Has been repeating 24 hours later on 7490v at least, but not this week, as UT Sun July 5 at 0000-0100 is when Uncle Bill`s much-publicized 4th of July musical special is due, on 7490+v and 6159.9v.

Unfortunately simultaneously with `A Capitol Fourth` on PBS-TV, but repeated a sesquihour later at least on OETA; and CNN`s 4OJ special at 0000-0400 UT, not to mention countless local events, including Enid, where the Enid Symphony Orchestra is barreling ahead with its traditional performance at Meadowlake Park despite the risks; people are encouraged to spread out as there is plenty of space around the lake, but in best of times getting in and out is problematic, e.g. avoiding those burning poison gas, i.e. smokers who think it`s OK as long as it`s outside; and parking is a nightmare.

I urged conductor Doug Newell to reconsider; what about the musicians crammed under the canopy? The windy ones at least cannot be masked. How about recording and/or broadcasting it? He says they don`t have the rights to do so, which would be an additional expense.

The concert is always free to the public, underwritten this year by Security National Bank. Starts around 0130 UT after a full day schedule of other risky events at the Park, and to accompany fireworx circa 0230 when it`s finally darkening.

To avoid the hassles, the past few years we have been attending instead dress rehearsals at 4 pm Saturday back in Symphony Center, but not this year in that enclosed and possibly crowded venue. The fireworx can of course be seen from a considerable distance away, but the music inaudible. Years before I had tried to get them to employ a Part 15 FM transmitter for better sound than over the loudspeakers, and maybe audible just outside the park in cars. Nix.

ESO apparently is itching to get going again with no performances since March, the final scheduled concert of the year, an all-Beethoven bash in April for season subscribers only, postponed. BTW, there aren`t enough local musicians to form an orchestra, so ESO has to draw in others from elsewhere in OK. As a 51-K city, we are lucky to have it and hope all of them survive (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12670.0-USB, July 4 at 1359, 2-way in Spanish, one of them screaming, encountered as I bandscan for CNR1 jammers. Per Klingenfuss 2002y, this was not a ship SSB frequency, but WNU New Orleans was in CW/DIG on 12670.4 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This summer, Mi Amigo’s crew will return to the sea once more: not (yet) on a ship, but in a live studio at the foot of the sea pier in Blankenberge, the popular coastal town at the ‘Belgian Riviera’.

From there, we will air a series of live broadcasts during 5 summer weekends, ending with a full week of live programming with many former Mi Amigo DJs and well known radio guests, during ‘Offshore Days’, at the end of August. (for dates: see below).

Big radio switch-off is DELAYED again: AM and FM stations will be available on old devices for another decade as switchover from analogue to digital is put off until 2032

Radio fans will be able to carry on listening to FM and AM radio stations on older devices in cars and at home until 2032, ministers announced yesterday.

New legislation will mean another delay in scrapping the analogue signal.

Media regulator Ofcom will renew all commercial analogue licences – which had been due to expire in 2022 – for another decade.

Nearly 60 per cent of all radio listening is now done through digital but analogue still has a loyal listenership of millions who tune into FM and AM.

Analogue had been due to begin turning off in 2015 but this was put on hold as a result of slower than expected take-up of digital radio.

A switchover date was then due to be looked at once digital accounted for half of all listening – a target hit in 2018.

Yesterday's announcement came after the Government had to decide what to do when a number of national analogue licences, including those for Classic FM and TalkSport, expire in 2022. (Daily Mail)

PS: ieri sera verso mezzanotte l'ho provato velocemente sulle onde medie: un po' debolino con la sua microscopica ferrite interna, più che sufficiente ma nulla di speciale dentro il loop passivo Tecsun AN100.

Sulle FM non è male. Ma ripeto, NON mi interessano, troppe radio commerciali, pubblicità invadente e martellante, il fascino delle vere radio libere degli anni '70 era un'altra cosa... ora le trovi più facilmente sulle onde corte (su Ch292 ma non solo!)

Infine: la spolettina accoppiatrice tra l'antenna MLA-30+ ed il ricevitore funziona benissimo con l'XHDATA D-808 che mal la tollerava collegata alla presa jack... sono felice di aver sposato questi due apparati elettronici! Ed intanto lo R-1000 è tornato a casa perfettamente riallineato e come nuovo!

RFE/RL Marks 70 Years Of Independent Reporting And Impact

WASHINGTON — On July 4, 1950, when Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL) first announced, “This is RFE calling” to an audience behind the Iron Curtain in communist Czechoslovakia, people listened because they expected the truth. Seventy years later, the platforms have proliferated and its mandate has grown, with RFE/RL delivering essential news via radio, TV, and digital media to more than 38 million people across 23 countries with little to no free press of their own.

“RFE/RL has a noble mission and has played a historic role over decades in countries fighting for democracy and human rights,” said Acting President Daisy Sindelar. “The tools have changed, but the challenges are fundamentally the same. We have some of the most dedicated journalists in the profession and have earned the trust of our audiences. We know that even in the toughest environments, our work to report the news and model the values of an independent press are making a real difference to people with nowhere else to turn for credible reporting on the issues that matter to them.”

In a tribute to RFE/RL on the occasion of its 70th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of its move from its original headquarters in Munich to Prague, Chairman of the Czech Senate Milos Vystrcil said, “For many of my contemporaries and for me, RFE/RL has been a source of free information and a window into the free world...I am proud that now RFE/RL broadcasts from Prague, so we can...participate in the flow of free information to Russia and other post-Soviet countries. It is as important for the citizens of those countries now as the broadcasts from Munich were for us.”

RFE/RL's 70th anniversary comes as it stands virtually alone in covering the coronavirus crisis in countries like Iran and Russia where officials have downplayed or outright denied the scope and impact of the pandemic. The anniversary also comes amid fresh threats against its journalists and editorial principles.

Independent blogger Ihar Losik, a social media consultant for RFE/RL’s Belarus Service, is currently being held in a Minsk detention center, accused by authorities of using his Telegram channel to “prepare to disrupt public order.” Looking ahead to a presidential election in August, the government has been spooked by the Service’s dominance on digital platforms: it registered a record 3.3 million video views on YouTube, nearly 3 million visits to its website, and 1.2 million video views on Facebook in May, not least because of its unflinching coverage of the coronavirus, which state media ignored and the country’s authoritarian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has repeatedly dismissed as a “psychosis.”

One journalist with RFE/RL’s Russian Service is under investigation because of an April 2020 interview she published with a St. Petersburg doctor who described shortages at his hospital of medical equipment and supplies to treat patients with the coronavirus. Pskov-based contributor Svetlana Prokopyeva is on trial for “justifying terrorism” after she speculated on air that political despair may have driven a teenager in Arkhangelsk in 2018 to detonate a suicide bomb. The Kremlin’s designation of RFE/RL as a “foreign agent” in 2017, and the tightening of the law in 2019 to target individual journalists, are tools revived from the Soviet era meant to inspire self-censorship and fear.

In Russia, where RFE/RL began broadcasting in 1953 following its Eastern European launch, the demand especially among younger audiences for real stories about real people has driven the growth and impact of RFE/RL’s digital TV network, Current Time. Its up-close, live-streamed coverage of election protests, corruption, local activism, and arbitrary arrests is unique in a country where state TV spins propaganda and conspiracy theories and the political opposition gets no airtime at all.

RFE/RL has extended its reach in recent decades to populations deprived of a free press in Afghanistan, to counter extremist propaganda in militant strongholds in Pakistan, and, most recently, to EU member states where media pluralism is in decline. It also plays an indispensable role in Iran, breaking through official censorship to reach 15.4 percent of the country’s adult population on radio, internet, and TV. Within the first six months of 2020, its Iranian Service, known in Persian as Radio Farda, provided unique live coverage and critical analysis of national protests over gasoline prices, the assassination of Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Qasem Soleimani, the downing of a Ukrainian jetliner, and the outbreak of the coronavirus. Iran’s government and official media, in every case, propagated conspiracy theories, concealed information, and lied.

In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, after Radio Farda’s own investigation revealed that the government had vastly underreported the virus’s death toll, the Service’s editor likened its work to a polygraph. He said, “We detect the lies, report the facts, and people trust us.”

Propagation News – 5 July 2020

This week saw the beginning of a new month and continued sporadic E openings. Traditionally we see a slow down in the number of sporadic E openings in July, but while we are seeing a few periods on 10m when there are no openings, they inevitably reappear.

An HF F2-layer opening to Angola occurred on Wednesday, allowing amateurs to bag Gabriel, D2EB on both 17 and 12 metres CW. Paul, G0KPH also spotted Gabriel on 40 metres CW in the evening.

As we said a couple of weeks ago, the HF bands are staying open later, which is a summer phenomenon. Darren, G0TSM has found 17m FT8 to be open to Japan, the West Coast of the USA, Alaska and Hawaii until around 0200UTC. Mike, G4FHQ said 80m has been good overnight too, after he heard a string of W2s and VE3s working the Canada Day contest at 0330UTC at 57/8 on SSB.

The Sun, however, remained very quiet with zero sunspots, which means our predictions are beginning to sound like a stuck record! The Kp index ranged from zero to three thanks to a high-speed solar wind stream. Next week NOAA predicts a solar flux index of 68 and a Kp index of two to three. There are no sunspots predicted, just a few bright spots on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft’s extreme ultraviolet view, which may or may not develop into spots. Mid-latitude coronal hole activity has declined recently and it does look like we are now truly at sunspot minimum.

VHF and up:

There is a change in the weather coming along and Sunday should see a ridge of high pressure building across the south of the country, bringing tropo back into the options. This could be particularly good for paths to the south across the Channel and Biscay as well as across the southern North Sea. This ridge gets a bit of knock-back after mid-week as a small low tracks across the north of the country. In some models this is also followed by a further weak ridge for the next weekend, so tropo will continue to feature.

The sporadic E season is less prolific in July, but it’s still a key month for the mode. The weather is always busy generating atmospheric gravity waves that can propagate upwards to affect the E region and trigger sporadic E, so hopefully some parts of the country may find the geometry is right for some VHF DX paths via sporadic E. These high summer weeks are often good for sporadic E ultra DX paths to the Far East, mostly in the early morning and on FT8, so it’s well worth checking the clusters from 0600 to 0800UTC.

With low Moon declination and no major meteor showers this week, it’s a good week to increase your square count via the satellites. QO100 and the low-Earth orbiters are always there to work the DX if the bands are flat.

Finally, a thought—while we’re definitely not advocating “don’t call CQ”, you’ll increase your chances of making non-contest QSOs hugely, especially on the GHz bands, if you announce your planned activity in advance. Use email reflectors, social media and the ON4KST microwave chat to let people know when you’re QRV. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

No sunspots this week. The pattern persists, and this surprises me. But Spaceweather.com reported a couple of weak, barely emerging spots, never numbered, and by their magnetic polarity were from new Cycle 25.

We rely on NOAA for official sunspot numbers, and the most recent one reported was 11 on June 15. See ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/indices/DSD.txt.

Average daily solar flux over the recent reporting week (June 25 to July 1) averaged 68.6 up from 67.7 over the previous seven days. Average daily planetary A index was 4.7, the same as the average middle latitude A index.

Predicted solar flux over the next 45 days is 68, every day July 3 to August 16, which is hardly a promising outlook. Even with no sunspots, it would be nice to see solar flux values north of 70.

Predicted planetary A index is 5 on July 3-26, 8 on July 27-28, 5 on July 29 through August 1, 8 on August 2-3, and 5 on August 4-16.

BBC Local Radio to cut 139 jobs in England

BBC local radio stations in England will lose 139 jobs as the network keeps the simplified schedules it created in March and adds a new all-England late show.

Helen Thomas held an all-staff virtual meeting on Thursday morning to communicate the changes with staff. She said the BBC needed to ‘refresh, reinvent and reinvigorate’ as a result of recent events.

She told staff the new schedules have brought ‘a new clarity’ to audiences across England with three, four hour shows in daytime and that there will also be restructuring in engineering and special features.

BBC England needs to save £25m operational costs before 2022. In total, 450 equivalent full-time roles across radio, TV and online in the nations and regions will be cut, from a staff of around 3,000.

Across BBC Local Radio programmes will be hosted by a single presenter – with no more double-headed shows. As well as the standardised shows 6-10am, 10am-2pm and 2-6pm seven days a week, there will be a new all-England Weekday and Weekend Late Show and shared regional programming between 6pm and 10pm on Sundays.

Unions say Band B (Journalist Co-ordinators) and Band C (Journalist) roles will be formally placed “at risk” of redundancy. Although Band D and above will not be “in scope”, management anticipate interest at these grades through voluntary redundancy.

GNS, which provides national news content to BBC Local Radio, will be replaced by a new ‘Central News Service’ and move to Salford at some point in the future, resulting in a number of job losses.

Cuts are also being made in television and online news operations, and the BBC will continue to look at saving costs with its buildings portfolio. In regional TV, the evening news programmes will be presented by a single host rather than being double-headed.

Helen Thomas, the Director of BBC England, said: “I’m proud people have turned to us for trusted news and information in huge numbers during COVID-19, proving the importance of our local and regional services. But those services were created more than 50 years ago, have changed very little and need significant reinvention. That has meant taking some difficult decisions.

“We are in the age of the Facebook community group and the WhatsApp neighbourhood chat. We must adapt to better reflect how people live their lives, how they get their news and what content they want.

“We’re going to modernise our offer to audiences in England by making digital a central part of everything we do. We’ll take forward lessons from COVID-19 that will make us more agile and more in touch with communities while also ensuring we’re as efficient as we can be. I’m confident we can evolve our local and regional services while improving our impact and better serving our audiences."(radiotoday.co.uk)

Times could be 1 minute off as I recorded during significantly home-grown salad lunch and did not listen until later.

AFAWK, this is the only time for English on SW, other than some scattered IDs. Monitored here VG via UTwente SDR; didn`t try direct but probably would hear more Cuban jamming against no Martí than RTA. This hour on one frequency only. Chris, OK, but what do you mean by ``107.7 is off the air?`` The only 107.7 in OK is the original KRXO-FM in OKC, still very much on the air as The Franchise, in English as I am hearing it now (Glenn, Enid, 1459 UT July 2, WOR)

L'Australia... in un palmo di mano! Il radioascolto da 23 dollari....

Questa mattina mi è arrivato l'Eton Elite Mini, un ricevitorino sorprendende per soli 23 dollari (acquistato su Amazon.com).

Con l'antenna a stilo cortissima del ricevitore non ci fai molto, specie in casa, specie in mezzo ai palazzi. Ma collegando il polo caldo della MLA-30+ ad un filo accoppiato in modo lasco (foto 1) all'antenna della radio (vedi foto) ho ascoltato anche Reach Beyond Australia!!!

Non è sensibilissimo e quindi sopporta abbastanza bene anche il sovraccarico (se ci colleghi direttamente il polo caldo della MLA-30+ all'antenna va in crisi solo su segnali fortissimi, tipo Radio Romania Int.). Per questo motivo ho costruito al volo una spolettina di accoppiamento tra l'uscita della MLA e lo stilo telescopico, con risultati davvero soddisfacenti! (foto 2)

Il DSP è un po' lento a trovare la migliore elaborazione del segnale; magari all'inizio è un po' distorto con AGC brusca, dopo una trentina di secondi migliora di molto.

La scansione è molto veloce, fin troppo, si ferma solo sulle stazioni più potenti, meglio sintonizzare passo passo con la rotellina.

Sul manuale mancano delle informazioni: premendo il tasto 9/10kHz ad rx spento si seleziona lo step per le onde medie; inoltre premendo il tasto Time a rx acceso si può commutare da una banda all'altra (per esempio dai 31 ai 25 metri ecc.)

La selettività è sufficiente (un po' come i primi portatili Sony e Panasonic)

Non mi piace la custodia in pelle rigida, preferisco il sacchettino del mio vecchio Degen DE1102 (di cui devo sistemare il finale audio, volume bassissimo e distorto) o quello della mia mitica fotocamera Lomo LC-A.

Ora lo voglio "spremere" ancora di più cercando di ascoltare le low-power europee (Shortwaveservice, ecc), vi terrò aggiornati.

El periodista Pedro Ignacio de Dalmases fue director de Radio Sáhara desde octubre de 1974 a enero de 1976. Él nos descubre el papel de la emisora, que comenzó sus emisiones el 18 de julio de 1961. A lo largo de sus casi 15 años de vida fue el medio de comunicación del Gobierno español para contrarrestar la propaganda de los países vecinos y contribuyó a asentar la idea de identidad saharaui. Radio Sáhara emitió en español y en lengua hasanía. El 26 de febrero de 1976, los españoles fueron evacuados del Sáhara y dos días después la emisora pasó a manos de la Radio Televisión Marroquí.

Finland: Scandinavian Weekend Radio (SWR) celebrates 20 years on the air in July 2020 and will be on the air for 48 hours from tonight (rather than their usual 24 hour broadcast).

Signs on at 2100 UTC Thursday 2nd July and broadcasts until 2100 UTC on Saturday 4th July on usual frequencies 5980 or 6170 kHz and 11690 or 11720 kHz. “Presentero’ un’interrogazione alla Camera per conoscere quali azioni intendano mettere in atto i ministeri competenti per il destino dell’antenna Rai Way, che dal 1951 e’ divenuta simbolo della citta’ di Caltanissetta, un valore confermato dal vincolo storico identitario a cui l’installazione e’ soggetta da parte della Soprintendenza ai beni culturali della provincia di Caltanissetta“. Cosi’ il vice presidente della Lega alla Camera, Alessandro Pagano. “Nonostante cio’, la Rai, attraverso la propria controllata e proprietaria dell’impianto, la Rai Way, vorrebbe demolire la storica antenna. L’assessorato ai Beni Culturali della Regione Sicilia si e’ espresso chiaramente a favore del vincolo di interesse storico culturale, su cui concorda anche la memoria difensiva dell’Avvocatura di Stato. L’antenna, all’avanguardia tecnologica all’epoca della sua installazione, era la piu’ alta d’Europa e tutt’oggi e’ simbolo della baricentricita’ della citta’ in Sicilia.

I cittadini di Caltanissetta e i siciliani tutti non vogliono perdere uno dei simboli della propria identita’. Una volonta’ che dovrebbe essere rispettata, anche alla luce del vincolo di interesse culturale a cui e’ sottoposto l’impianto. I was checking it out after seeing this in Bill Hale`s FM News column in July WTFDA VHF-UHF Digest:

``OK Oklahoma City 107.9 KRXO-FM Spanish CHR: ‘Ritmo 107.9’``

That can`t be right, as the real full-power KRXO-FM is still on 107.7 in OKC, with stupid sports talk, in English; certainly no room for another, one channel up! Same owner Tyler Media does have a 107.9 translator in Tulsa of KRXO (AM) 1270; and a CP to move it to nearby Broken Arrow, per FCC FM Query. However, WTFDA FM Database shows K300CY, the 107.9 in Broken Arrow is Spanish CHR, Ritmo 107.9, relaying KRXO 1270.

1270 must be a recent flip, not sure when; believe I still had 1270 in English sports talk early in June. Radio-locator.com still has it sports, ``The Franchise``. Site is between Owasso and Claremore, NE of Tulsa, but plenty coverage of entire metro. 5 kW day pattern does have a notch toward Enid; 1 kW night pattern less of a notch. Why move the FM to Broken Arrow, SE of Tulsa? Census data indicates most Hispanic neighborhoods are in central Tulsa. Maybe it`s going up on a high-tower antenna farm.

New Religious Shortwave Broadcaster from Illinois to use DRM

The FCC accepted for filing on May 27 an application from Parable Broadcasting, LLC, a company based in Norfolk, Virginia, to build an international shortwave broadcasting station in Batavia, Illinois, specifically, “to serve areas of Europe that may be authorized by the Commission.

The planned broadcast content includes religious and educational programming as well as data content provided by third parties. The applicant is positioning the proposed station to take advantage of the recent push by the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters to develop and provide content for the growing DRM [Digital Radio Mondiale] market.”

According to the filing, the station will use two 15 kW transmitters from Amplifier Systems, Inc. and utilize a two-section log-periodic antenna of 18.0 dBi gain, mounted 184 feet above ground. The transmission line, made by Comscope, will be 5-inch diameter 50-ohm coaxial cable 550 feet long. The document states that the station will broadcast only in DRM mode. The filing indicates the station will “operate between 5.9-15.8 MHz international shortwave bands coordinated with the FCC and HFCC [High Frequency coordinating Committee].”

According to drawings submitted by the engineering firm, the log-periodic antennas will be a wire configuration supported by two towers that will allow, a small area of land that replaces a rhombic antenna twice the size and achieves a low take-off angle while operating on a wide frequency bandwidth (4-30 MHz), achieving over 18 dBi power gain.

** OKLAHOMA. 92.3, June 30 circa 1430 UT on caradio, on the way to Primary poll to advance Sen. Inhofe`s opposition, Oklahoma news where normally only fringe remnants of somethings, KS dominant; non-ID as ``Z-92``, soon obviously the Woodward station which is only 10.5 kW H&V ERP, altho ``Z-92`` is not in the WTFDA DB:
``KMZE 92.3 WOODWARD OK 10.5 368.0 m 36-16-23 99-26-45 TALK/SPORTS TRI STATES NEWS TALK SPORTS``.
Searching 92.3 on ``Z-92`` (hyphen required) would lead instead to stations in FL, NE. Minor tropo enhancement westward (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 5890, June 30 at 0552, WWCR-4 is off again, no Brother Scare here. Daytime channel 9980 also gone, June 30 at 1743 check. So maybe the transmitter be broken, or Overcomer`s virtually 24/7 buyout be over already in less than a full month? Had not paid attention to whether the previous few hours a weekday with otherhuxters remain on #4 air: 9980 M-F 20-21; 5890 Tu-Sa 02-04. But June 30 at 2025, 9980 is also OFF. Maybe we shall see a revised program schedule after July 1, mostly blank (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, June 30 at 2221, VOT is detectable, but very weak and unreadable vs no RTTY, but local persistent birdie, talk rather than music fill. Try UTwente, and find excellent reception, `Turkey`s Tourist Attraxions` about Mardin, ending into music at 2223 --- one of the talk programs still being aired if not produced, probably evergreens. Mardin is in the southeast, i.e. Kurdistan and has a majority-Kurdish population who spell it Mêrdin. I`ll bet TRT didn`t emphasize that or even mention it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 93.1, re my strange reception of KRVN 93.1 over a 319-mile path, there is of course a #3 possibility for propagation mode --- meteor scatter. I did not consider this at the time, since it lasted at least a minute and did not display any rapid fading, both of which are uncharacteristic of MS --- but the ``in-between`` distance is more appropriate, and a fireball might have lasted that long. I wonder if there is any reference of such events and their precise locations and timings (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
