W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the point.

Solar minimum will begin later in 2019-2020 and may last longer than any previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century. Another “Dalton” type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a corresponding cooling of earth’s climate.

This would negate anthropogenic climate change (harmful man induced global warming) if it were occurring, WHICH IT ISN’T.

For more “TRUTH” on the communist-marxist-socialist lie of anthropogenic climate change (harmful man induced global warming) check out https://wattsupwiththat.com and http://www.climatedepot.com

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent SSN <50.

GLOBAL (HF-MF 3000-30000 kHz- 300-3000 kHz) RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION CONDITIONS EXPECTED-

Radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jun 02, 2019- steady.

Radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jun 03, 2019- minor deterioration.

Radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jun 04, 2019- steady.

We are now moving into the northern hemisphere HF-MF radio wave propagation summer season.

The 14000- 30000 kHz frequency range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere is higher and the layer ions less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-29700 kHz frequency ranges will open via short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial propagation (TEP).

We are now moving into the southern hemisphere HF-MF radio wave propagation winter season.
The approximate 11000- 30000 kHz frequency range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher than in the northern hemisphere as the F layer of the ionosphere is lower in height and the ions more concentrated.
The approximately 3000-10000 kHz frequency range often stays open for DX all throughout the day due to a weaker D layer and therefore less RF signal absorption.
A weaker and shorter sporadic E (Es) season occurs during winter time.

This HF-MF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP HF-MF radio wave propagation prediction software. X and O ray tracing is included.
I wrote it beginning in the late 1980’s and continue to refine it in 2019.
But I’m sorry to say that it still can’t be distributed to the general public.
It does outperform VOA CAP and Prop Lab.

I do check the actual band conditions at my location in the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF-MF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

The MF broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on 50,000 watts (50 kw) and an omnidirectional vertical antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF-MF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

** CHINA [and non]. 15340, June 1 at 1244, soft song at S3-S6 with flutter, 1246 Chinese talk. Aoki/NDXC shows jammed SOH relay of RFA.

9230, June 1 at 1319, Chinese and music // 11785, CNR1 jammer against Sound of Hope. EiBi shows SOH on 9230.1 but not a jammer. Aoki/NDXC shows both on 9230. No het audible here.

15165, June 1 at 1335, very heavy CCI in Chinese, i.e. VOA via THAILAND this hour only, vs CNR1 jamming. The latter goes off at 1400* when VOA has already quit  (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6165, June 1 at 0438, RHC English is about S9 of dead air, or maybe JBM? 6000 likewise but slightly audible; 6060 Spanish is OFF. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 4765, June 1 at 0440, surprised to find R. Progreso carrier still on, after nominal 0400*; maybe a trace of modulation? Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 9640, June 1 at 0448, RHC Spanish is S8 of dead air or maybe JBM. Still on and the same at 0547, but S5-S7. Supposed to quit at 0400 per Aoki/NDXC, and nothing else scheduled afterwards. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15230, June 1 at 1335, RHC S9 but very undermodulated; much louder on S9+20 15140. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY. 9370, June 1 at 0443, music and talk in uncertain language, VP S2-S5 vs storm noise from TX; where I have not noticed anything before. HFCC shows 0430-0630 IBB Lampertheim in Fas, i.e. Radio Farda, as confirmed by Aoki/NDXC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Ever since OETA without notice abruptly terminated its OKLA subchannel-2 at the end of 2018y, replacing it with the yellowish WORLD channel from PBS, I have been looking for a recording of its blue ID slide for posterity, since I don`t think I ever captured it before. Finally found one on an old tape:

While we`re at it, some more DTV pixillated art. These are from KWTV-25 breakup on rabbit ears/UHF loop antenna; not sharp due to camera focusing problem and hand-held, but adding? to mystique:

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1984 monitoring: confirmed first US SW broadcast, Friday May 31 at 2207 the 2200 on WRMI 9955 --- very poor on portable, but at 2225 good S9+10 to S8 on the R75.

Also confirmed UT Sat June 1 at 0130 on WRMI 7780, S9/+10 but poor vs storm noise level.

Also confirmed Sat June 1 at 1145 the 1130 on WRMI 9955, fair-good.

Not confirmed Sat June 1 from 1431 on HLR 9485-CUSB; via UTwente not a trace of even the reduced carrier vs huge splash from 9490 Romania; nor when tried with LSB tuning as I have called for. Next:

** U S A. 7490+, UT Sat June 1, at 0000 sharp, WBCQ starts playing ``William Tell Overture`` theme to `Allan and Angela Wiener Worldwide`, but without any interjexions, intact complete until 0003, a bad sign that something may be wrong. Then dead air, while I recheck 9330+ to find that one still BSing instead of // 7490+. At 0006:40, WTO starts all over! This time AW comments, ``no more repeats, we`re here from Monticello, Maine`` and fades down theme before it complete again. Hard to copy anything due to weak signal vs nearby storm noise level. Not rechecked until 0043, when now it`s Pirate Joe, J P Ferraro instead of AW but with similar voice and accent; so I don`t know what happened in the meantime, and haven`t heard yet from John Carver. Can anyone else infill us? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15770, May 31 at 2000, WRMI-9 is S6-S7 but dead air, still so at 2019. This was when, Fridays only, a new hour broadcast of `Radio for Peace International` was supposed to appear. As always, poor signal here off the side of its 44-degree NE beam back toward Europe.

9455, meanwhile, Fri May 31 at 2019, this WRMI-8 with music from the also new APS Radio, M-F only 19-21; at 2051 modulation if not carrier cuts off and on and off and on, hard to tell which on non-BFO receiver. Only fair signal on 355 degree antenna, same as 9395 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6900-AM, June 1 at 0435, JBA carrier; could be a pirate where there is not normally a carrier; even YHWH? Which I still have not been able to detect on the 7 MHz band (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 10775, June 1 at 1316, open carrier as S1-S4 and then off. Thought it might be Sound of Hope/jamming, but not listed on this frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Radio Guinea out of air, Radio Kahuzi irregular due to electricy problems.

CONGO, 6210.2, Radio Kahuzi, Bukavu, irregular at closing time (1730-1803*). At this time can be heard here when propagation conditions are good. Some days out of air and other on. I have contacted with the station, via email and here is the replay about electricity problems.
"Thank you for your questions and monitoring !
We have been on the air most mornings, but city-wide problems have limited most zones to one or two hours during the day and similarly
the nights !
And we were on the air yesterday morning (8h35 to 9h50) and evening the 28 May 2019 -- however, the SNEL cut the current for Bukavu after we relayed the News, after about half an hour at about 18h45.
Today we were on SW 6210 KHz 8h26 to10h00 and lacked current until the evening when it was cut several times until about 19h20 until a cut-off by SNEL at 19h45.
We hope conditions were good enough for you to pick up our signal again.
The main problem seems to be that reconnections of city cables are made without proper use of tape and protection of supply aluminum
cables from the rains and short circuits.
You can imagine how difficult it is to be on the air and protect equipment from current swings to 180 Volts or 380 Volts, when there
are short circuits in local cabinets where the transformers are.
Keep Looking UP !"

ECUATORIAL GUINEA, 5005, Radio Nacional, Bata, irregular at open time, at about 0510, more days on, but some days off air. Yesterday, May 31 open at about 0509 with songs, but today June 1 out of air.

GUINEA, 9650, Radio Guinea, Conakry, this station seems to be out of air for about a weak.Only Saudi Arabia heard on 9650.

ROMANIA, 9510, Radio City via IRRS/Nexus, Saftica, 0845-0859*, 01-06, pop songs in English, id. "Radio City, the station of the cars". 44444.

Radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jun 01, 2019- steady.

Radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jun 02, 2019- steady.

Radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Jun 03, 2019- minor deterioration.

Predicted planetary A index is 8 on May 31, 5 on June 1-4, 8 on June 5-6, 5 on June 7-15, 8 on June 16-18, 5 on June 19-23, then 10, 16, 12, 10, 10 and 8 on June 24-29 and 5 on June 30 through July 14.

When might we see a return of visible sunspots? Perhaps a table of recent sunspot numbers and solar flux gives us a clue: ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/indices/old_indices/2019Q2_DSD.txt

Note when the solar flux dropped below 70, sunspots disappeared. With predicted flux values above 70 for the first half of June, perhaps we won’t have long to wait.

OK1HH sends us his geomagnetic forecast.

Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period May 31 thru June 26, 2019.

Geomagnetic field will be:
Quiet on June 13-14
Quiet to unsettled on May 31, June 1-6, 9, 15, 19-22
Quiet to active on June 8, 11-12, 16-18
Unsettled to active on June 7, 10, 23-26

Solar wind will intensify on (May 31-June 1,) June 10-14, 24-26

Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.

N8II sent us his observations on last weekend’s CQ WW WPX CW contest, from West Virginia: "Band conditions during the 2 weeks leading up to the WPX CW contest were quite poor from here except for a few sporadic E openings including one on 10-meter phone via double hop to Oregon and Washington.

“Right from the start of the contest, however, conditions were exceptional. In the first few minutes I worked New Zealand and Hawaii on 15 meters, both weak. Twenty meters was wide open to almost all of Europe excluding Britain and France/Benelux countries until about 0115Z, then still open well to some of Europe. Asia conditions improved then including some Russians in zone 18 and Kazakhstan. There was some short skip into the USA and Canada indicating some sporadic E help. N3QE in Maryland nearby reported best ever WPX CW 80-meter conditions and 40 meters was excellent as well Friday night.

“Saturday morning the sporadic E fun continued. I also logged two big-gun Japanese stations around 1240Z. Over the weekend, I made 204 contacts on 15 meters. About 65% were in the USA and Canada, and then I went on to make 45 contacts on 10 meters. The first European to go into the 15-meter log was SP8R in Poland at 1256Z, followed quickly by UW3U in Ukraine. There were very few loud European signals on 15 meters on Saturday, but many that I struggled to work then were much louder on Sunday. Saturday conditions favored Central Europe with Hungary, Czech and Slovak Republics, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy going into the log.

“Amazingly, I was able to technically work all continents over the two days on both 15 and 10 meters thanks to the multi-hop sporadic E! P33W in Cyprus was logged on 40-10 meters for Asia; CN3A, Morocco (also 40 through 10 meters); CR3DX, Madeira Island for Africa; WH7V on 10 meters (1853Z Saturday; very rare); several Hawaiians on 15 meters for Oceania; YW1K, Venezuela (my only South American on 10 meters); YT7Z in Serbia at 1442Z Sunday on 10 meters along with HG3N in Hungary; LZ8R in Bulgaria; IB9T in Sicily, and CR6K in Portugal – all for Europe, of course.

“Each late afternoon Europe boomed in on 20 meters until past 2400Z (Friday/Saturday). At the end of the contest there was good sporadic E in almost every direction. On both Saturday and Sunday evenings there was essentially no skip zone on 40 meters versus the usual one extending into New York, New England, Ohio and North Carolina. Europe was exceptional on 40 meters from 2400Z-0200Z Saturday evening with low static crashes."

When Jeff mentioned ”Benelux,” I had to look this up, and no, it wasn’t a typo. In fact, it has been around since 1944: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benelux. Until I read this, I also had no idea that “Luxembourgish” is a language.

On May 25, Ken Brown, N4SO, of Alabama sent this report on recent 40-meter FT8 activity: "I was running FT8 at just 10 W output to a half-square antenna. I managed to work YB3BBF in Indonesia at 2343 UTC, which is unusual, especially with the Caribbean, South America, and Europe coming through all at the same time. Other call signs copied include 9K2NO, ON4XM, EW8W, JA1EOD, JK7CWL, YC8MJG, 4E1FNS and DS5USH.”

Here is the best article I’ve ever read describing the solar cycle prediction panel that met in Boulder in the first week in March, and “best” includes any of the previous meetings: https://bit.ly/2HMh21S. The writer makes a common error in confusing the daily sunspot number with the number of sunspots, no doubt due to the arcane method for arriving at the number. She mentions 14 sunspots, but the sunspot number on the day of the meeting was 14, meaning there were four sunspots within a single group. The sunspot number counts 10 points for each group, and one point each for the sunspots within that group.
