The K7RA Solar Update

Sunspots finally returned on September 29, after over two weeks with none.

Average daily sunspot numbers increased from 0 to 9.6, and average daily solar flux increased from 67.9 to 68.4 over the past week, September 27 through October 3.

Average daily planetary A index declined from 10.9 to 7.7, while average mid-latitude A index changed from 7.9 to 6.1.

Predicted solar flux is 68 on October 5-18, 70 on October 19 through November 2, 68 on November 3-14, and 70 on November 15-18.

Predicted planetary A index is 5 on October 5-6, 20 on October 7-8, 12 on October 9-10, then 10, 8, 5, 12 and 8 on October 11-15, 5 on October 16-17, then 10, 25, 14, 8 and 12 on October 18-22, 8 on October 23-25, then 10, 6, 12, 8 and 5 on October 26-30, then 8 on October 31 through November 2, then 20, 35, 10, 18 and 15 on November 3-7, then 8, 5, 10, 8 and 5 on November 8-12, and 5, 10, 25, 15, 8 and 12 on November 13-18.

SWS GEOMAGNETIC DISTURBANCE WARNING 18/22 ISSUED AT 0417 UTC/05 OCTOBER 2018 BY THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE FORECAST CENTRE.

Geomagnetic activity is expected to increase to active levels on UTC day 7 Oct and to minor storm levels on 8 Oct. There is a remote chance that for short periods the geomagnetic activity may even reach major storm levels during this interval.

The disturbance is due to the expected arrival of CIR (Corotating Interaction Regions) and HSS (High Speed Streams) associated with a large recurrent positive polarity north polar connected coronal hole. The aurora may be visible on the local nights of the 7 and 8 October from Tasmania, coastline of Victoria and Southwest coast of Western Australia.

Ted Leaf, K6HI, had a comment about the K9SQG 40-meter observations last week. "Forty meters may be dead for DX, but not for NVIS. We have a daily 40m net at 4pm local Hawaii time. Goes all over the islands, out to more than 200 miles. Lots of S9+ signals. For a very low antenna, tell me how well you get out for DX?"

K9SQG wrote on September 28: "Interestingly, I've been having nightly schedules on 40 meters between Dayton, Ohio and Wimberley Texas, a distance of about 1500 miles perhaps, and signals both ways are +20-30 over S9 for an hour or more at a time. This is in the 9:30 to 11 pm range, Eastern time. I’m going to try earlier in the evening too and see about that."

On September 28, Bil Paul, KD6JUI, wrote: "Here's your kayak guy, Tad. I was operating today from the boat on 17 and 20-meter CW. I was using a poor wire antenna but managed two contacts on 17 meters.

However, I was amazed to hear France (F6HKA) and Italy (I8QJU) coming in loud and clear on 20-meter CW. I was unable to get any contacts on 20 meters but was surprised to hear these guys coming in like locals at around 1 pm Pacific time.”

Charles, KW6G, wrote: “The equinox effects are definitely significant. Wednesday night, September 26, I worked an all-time new one for me: ZD9CW on Tristan de Cunha Island. He was on 40 meters around 0700 UTC and I got him on CW on the third call! I was running my Icon IC-7600 transceiver driving an Avon 1010 amplifier to a ground-mounted Butternut HF9V vertical antenna. I have copied him last night as well.

“Longer propagation does have its advantages. However, after working 277 DXCC entities, finding new ones during this time of the solar cycle is pretty difficult.”

Sunspot numbers for September 27 through October 3, 2018 were 0, 0, 13, 14, 14, 14, and 12, with a mean of 9.6. 10.7 cm flux was 67.1, 69.1, 68.7, 68.3, 70.1, 67, and 68.4, with a mean of 68.4. Estimated planetary A indices were 7, 8, 10, 6, 9, 8, and 6, with a mean of 7.7. Estimated mid-latitude A indices were 6, 8, 9, 4, 6, 6, and 4, with a mean of 6.1.

Propagation News – 7 October 2018

There are signs that ionospheric conditions are improving as we head into autumn. This isn’t unexpected; as the ionosphere cools there is a chemical shift towards more monatomic species that are easier to ionise.

The 4U1UN New York, VE8AT Nunavut and ZS6DN Pretoria beacons on 14.100MHz were all audible at the same time on Wednesday, and we can expect transatlantic conditions to get better as the month progresses. Robert, G4TUK even reported working Mayotte in the Indian Ocean on 10 metres. So do make sure you make the most of the autumn DX openings if and when they occur.

Next week the solar flux index is predicted to remain around 68-70, so 14 and 18MHz are likely to be the main daylight DX bands, with the possibility of occasional openings on higher bands. However, the effects of a solar coronal hole may once again disrupt the ionosphere with Sunday, the seventh, and Monday, the eighth, predicted to see a raised Kp index of up to six.

Look for pre-auroral enhancements before or just after the solar matter hits the Earth. One way to do this is monitor the real-time solar wind at solarham.com. An increasing wind speed, increasing particle density and a south-facing interplanetary magnetic field or Bz are all indicators of an impending geomagnetic disturbance.

Wednesday, the 10th, and Thursday, the 11th, may also be disturbed, before we see a little respite later in the week.

VHF and up:

It’s looking a bit mixed for the next week with high pressure nearby over southern areas, while we have occasional periods of low pressure to the north and west of Scotland. The high pressure in the south will mean that tropo will be a feature again this week. This is typical autumn fare, and there should be some good paths into the continent and across the southern North Sea to the Baltic. It will also be worthwhile checking paths to the south across Biscay to Spain and the Canaries.

The north-west of the British Isles will probably miss out on these tropo conditions since it will also be rather breezy with occasional rain or showers. A few options may present themselves for some rain scatter on the microwave bands.

Moon declination is positive until Monday night, so EME windows will shorten and losses will climb as the week progresses.

October is a busy month for meteor showers. Next Tuesday sees the peak of the Draconids, which favours temperate and far-northern latitudes. Look for increased activity from Sunday night.

** CUBA [and non]. 13740, Oct 3 at 1400, dead air from China Plus relay transmitter alone: RHC Spanish has managed to turn off its transmitter today! But CRI modulation does not start up until 1401:20, initially low, then building up but never reaching 100%.

The ChiCom but American-accented newscaster (and/or his writer/censor) disdains regular verbs; instead everything is just ``-ing, -ing`` as they are trying to impose a sense of current motion or activity, rather than ``is -ing``, ``was -ing`` or simply ``-ed`` past tense as all news really is by the time it`s broadcast on the way to becoming olds. 

Many others are guilty of this ing-ing, notably David Muir on ABC`s `World News Tonight` [sic: in many timezones, especially summer, it runs during full daytime, first feed at 2230 UT], which is a factor in what makes him #3 for me, or worse, not #1 as ABC ratings claim (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

At 1507 UT Oct 4, I duly posted the above to the WOR iog and HCDX, with this introduxion: ``Here we go again. I shall be very surprised if anyone hears anything anywhere on 4055 during this time period, but give it a try. Prove me wrong. Note discrepancy in timespan, in both language versions, 3 hours in local time, 2 hours in UT. Dr M has never explained exactly how this can be accomplished. And has not provided any contact info to the agency allegedly providing this. Are there now legal or mini-power 4055 transmitters in all these countries?``

So I listened to UTwente SDR tuned to 4055 at 2005-2015, and spot chex later in the hour, UT Oct 4, getting: ``nothing but some kind of ute noise blob on the plus side of 4055``.

Other monitors using own or remote receivers also reported negative results: Bill Bingham, RSA; Richard Langley, NB; Anker Petersen, Denmark; Manuel Méndez, Spain, who then got a reply from Dr M: "Gracias por su reporte desde España. Estoy investigando si realmenteestamos en el aire o no"; and Jorge Freitas, Brasil, who adds, ``With all due respect to Mr. Edgar, this email has no logic and support. I agree with Glenn``.

If Dr M. does receive any seemingly positive reports of this from monitors unknown to us, he should seriously doubt their credibility; they could be ringers (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KUWAIT [and non]. 15105-15110-15115, Oct 4 at 1325, weak DRM noise at S2-S3, as RK is scheduled to end just now, 0945-1325, 250 kW, 310 degrees in Arabic USward. Mixed with JBA AM carrier, as 15110 is also in use by ChiCom jamming and VOA Chinese via Thailand, 250 kW at 14 degrees also USward (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 890, October 3 at 1821 UT, KTLR OKC is the first station I hear running the much-publicized nationwide EAS test (eclipsed by text version 2 minutes earlier I am not equipped to receive). It`s an impossible task to evaluate the 1-minute EAS, without recording the entire local AM and/or FM bands for later study as if they were DX --- did anybody do this? 

As zero-minute approached, I was set to scan up MW ASAP starting at 550. After KTLR, many others were heard, but nothing seemed to be synchronized. One station still playing music while others EASed, was 1130, KLEY Wellington KS, but moving on, I don`t know whether they did run it earlier, later, or never. At least they long ago solved the transmission breakup/noise pulsing which plagued KLEY most of the first half of this year.

Notably, 930, WKY OKC ran a Spanish version of the EAS announcement circa 1822 UT. At least I did not hear any horrible echoes or distortions as has happened previously, due to too-lengthy relay chains! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1950 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday October 2 at 2056, the 2030 on WRMI 7780, JBA (and not on 5950, and not on either at 2130 despite outdated System D online schedule). 

Also confirmed Wednesday October 3 at 2100 on WRMI 9955 (after a pentaminute of IS & ID loop), S9 --- but pulse jamming also starts underneath at exactly same time --- tnx a lot, Arnie! Current WRMI 9955 System B sked, FWIW, shows Spanish at 2100 only on Mon & Fri, both DX, not counter-revolutionary programs.

WOR 1950 on WBCQ 7490v simultaneously from 2100 Wed Oct 3 and almost synchronized, WRMI no longer delayed a semiminute. WBCQ reads S9, but more fading, to S5, and somewhat undermodulated by comparison. Next:

The idea is to cover baseball games for the rest of season in October, perhaps evading jammers, but I suppose exact timings of games vary widely depending on zone, other local factors; not to mention real durations. 2018 dates for World Series [sic; North American Sequence] are Oct 23 until 31 if necessary. "Radio Verdad transmission test on 4055 to Europe between 1900-2100 UTC. Nothing heard here in Friol, Lugo, and nothing via remote SDR receivers in Holland, Switzerland and Italy (checked 1900 to 1935 UTC 04 October."

WINB su 15670 kHz in DRM

Ho fatto un tentativo di ricezione in DRM del segnale della stazione WINB su 15670 kHz dalle 1500 alle 1530 UTC. Durante il tenativo di ricezione ero consapevole della difficoltà di decodificare il segnale considerato il  basso livello dello stesso rappresentato dall’Smeter del mio ricevitore, un Kenwood TS-440 usando, alternativamente, un dipolo accordato, una filare di 25 m e una Beverage di 69 m. Le mie previsioni sono state confermate. Ho potuto decodificare soltanto due volte esclusivamente la schermata identificativa della stazione ma l’audio è stato sempre assente. In tutti i casi ritengo un successo questo ascolto effettuato al limite del QRM. Alle 1530 sulla stessa frequenza si è annunciata la AWR in diverse lingue, comprese l’italiano. Radio Verdad worldwide tests imminent

Here we go again. I shall be very surprised if anyone hears anything anywhere on 4055 during this time period, but give it a try. Prove me wrong. Note discrepancy in timespan, in both language versions, 3 hours in local time, 2 hours in UT. Dr M has never explained exactly how this can be accomplished. And has not provided any contact info to the agency allegedly providing this. Are there now legal or mini-power 4055 transmitters in all these countries? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Very Important Notice:

Transworld Radio Truth (Radio Verdad) will be transmitting on test transmission tomorrow Thursday afternoon from 13:00 through 16:00 hours Guatemala time (19:00-21:00 hours GMT or UTC).

The transmissions will be addressed to Africa, Europe (Spain, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany), China, and other countries.

Our transmissions are via satelite, but you will pick up our signal on short wave, on 4055 Khz. There are many repeating short wave antennas over the world. It is a new and wondrous invention.

We are not transmitting tomorrow to America, México, the Caribean, Central America and South America yet. We still have some difficulties with the equipment for this area, which we are on the effort to solve soon. We plan to transmit to the whole world soon afterwards. These are test transmissions. If we succeed fully, we plan to move all the equipment to Chiquimula, for permanente transmissions.

We plead DX'ers, amateur radio men and other listeners to report our test transmissions on audio recordings. This will help to improve our Transworld Radio Truth future transmissions.

The project has taken us about three years, due to the many technical and legal dificulties, which we have overcome. Praise God.

AIR observes the External Broadcast Day on 1st October 2018

Another momentous occasion for us in the External Services of All India Radio. For the first time in its history we are observing the External Broadcast Day on 1st October 2018. This also marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the 80th anniversary of External broadcast in India. 

Eight decades is a long time in the life of an individual. Like in case of a human being as during this period , an institution traverses through many challenges, trials and tribulations. External Services of All India Radio is also no exception to this. Since its inception in 1939 it has passed through its hours of glory and relative sunset moments. From a buoyant high of 37 language broadcast at the height of the World War II in 1945 it plummeted to only 16 just before the dawn of Independence, when it was relegated to insignificance. Independence infused new life into it when it emerged as the voice of a newborn nation trying to announce herself to the world. Notwithstanding the initial bonhomie, external broadcast again fell into disuse as never ever its full potential as a significant tool for public diplomacy and instrument of foreign policy and international relations was fully comprehended, explored and hence not exploited by those in the business of diplomacy. Unlike elsewhere in the world; diplomacy, foreign policy and external broadcast continued to be conducted in silos. Over the years, this disconnect got ossified. World around was however changing in the meanwhile and was changing fast. Countries with whom we unfortunately have a zero sum relations were making strides in the domain of public diplomacy through the medium of radio adding language after language to their bouquet and were adopting modern technology to reach out to the world. In contrast, external broadcast here was gasping and battling out the institutional apathy. Four years ago when after an eventful tenure in the Ministry of Rural Development involving nationwide implementation of development communication strategies, I joined External Services Division for my second stint, the place appeared frozen in time and like a living fossil as I and my wife who accompanied me walked into the place. An all pervading gloom was writ large on every face as the diiktat for it's imminent closure had been received and everyone was waiting for the inevitable final pull of the hangman's lever. It was at this crucial cross roads of ESD's history , I was called upon by the Director General and given the mantle of External broadcast and reposed his trust . I felt humbled as giants and stalwarts of Indian and World broadcasting like Ms. Mehra Masani, P.C. Chatterjee, K.P. Shunghloo, U.L. Baruah , N.L Chawla among others had adorned this position. But the pygmy in me refused to be the daunted and become the " First minister in King's government to preside over its liquidation." Instead, I took the bull by horns. I gave myself 6 months to script the turn around story of External Broadcast or quit. It indeed was a tall order. Enthusing the colleagues who had their spirits at bootlace level and gaining their confidence to partner in this uphill ride and bringing the external stakeholders on board had to be done quickly. A technological leapfrogging was also crucial. I must confess, once convinced all my colleagues and my seniors particularly Mr. Fayyaz Sheheryar, the DG stood by me. The culmination of all that is, today no longer anyone talks about closing down ESD or it being " a colossal national wastage and Rs. 100 crore going down the drain." Now the talk is about strengthening the ESD. We have added new services. Gone digital. Have 28 multimedia Websites and Apps of international standard for our language services. We are now present on alternate platforms like Radio Garden, Tune in, Alexa voice command system. Our relationship with MEA is no longer episodic. We are reconnecting to our listeners and patrons every passing day on every platform in which we have made our presence.

It is in this backdrop, the celebration of the first External Broadcast Day and the beginning of the observence of the 80th anniversary is personally significant and gratifying for me.

** CUBA. 5025, Oct 2 at 1346, R. Rebelde is still S9-S6 an hour after sunrise here, and much more there, but dead air or maybe JBM. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6099.238, Oct 1 at 0656, RHC English via the off-frequency transmitter again (later that same day, Wolfgang Bueschel reported via remote SDRs in New Jersey and/or Alberta: ``6099.9975 CUB RHC Bauta site, Spanish language 11-13 UT scheduled, S=9+10dB heard at 1224 UT on Oct 1st. Heavy distorted audio channel, QRM interference oddly of co-channel strange peak signal on odd fq 6099.239 kHz`` --- but as I have logged several times before during both transmissions, the latter is RHC as modulated, and no 6100.0 to go with it). 

Back at 0656, the other RHCs: 6000 is off; 6060 on with music; by 0701, 6165 is in unscheduled Spanish news instead of English. By 0702, 6099.238 and 6060 have dropped to dead air, carriers still on. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13700, Oct 1 at 1409, this RHC is off; supposed to run at 13-15. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Next day at 1348 check it`s on again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6060, Oct 2 at 0613, RHC English is VG but overmodulated so that it splatters up to plus/minus 10, bothering 6070- CFRX. 6165 is off; 6000 = 6100 at S9+10 and same undermodulation. At 0622, S9+30 open carrier is still on 5040. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 7335 & 7365, Monday Oct 1 at 0704, nothing but jamming, making me wonder if Radio Martí has resumed a MM silent period? But still audible on 6030 over jamming. Maybe the MUF has plunged. Now I have a chance to check 11860 which allegedly is also on M-F from 0700 --- nothing audible there, of course.

23 hours later, Oct 2 at 0605, both 7365 and 7335 are VG inbooming over jamming, with RM at S9+10/20, ending a VOA Editorial in Spanish about human rights, i.e. the Fourth Amendment which is totally inapplicable in Commie Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDONESIA. 3344.862, Oct 2 at 1213, JBA carrier, surely the reactivated RRI Ternate, and much weaker than 3325. First measured here, and then find it matches exactly where Wolfgang Bueschel found it later that hour: ``3344.862 INS RRI Ternate mx program heard at 1247-1250 UT, just above threshold S=5 level, S=4-5 or -94dBm level much fluttery noted in SDR unit at Brisbane Queensland`` (Glenn Hauser, OK DX LISTENING DIGEST)

HF Undergrounders refer to this beacon as Windy, since it allegedly broadcasts wind speeds from some remote southwestern desert. AIR observes the External Broadcast Day on 1st October 2018

Another momentous occasion for us in the External Services of All India Radio. For the first time in its history we are observing the External Broadcast Day on 1st October 2018. This also marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the 80th anniversary of External broadcast in India. 

Eight decades is a long time in the life of an individual. Like in case of a human being as during this period , an institution traverses through many challenges, trials and tribulations. External Services of All India Radio is also no exception to this. Since its inception in 1939 it has passed through its hours of glory and relative sunset moments. From a buoyant high of 37 language broadcast at the height of the World War II in 1945 it plummeted to only 16 just before the dawn of Independence, when it was relegated to insignificance. Independence infused new life into it when it emerged as the voice of a newborn nation trying to announce herself to the world. Notwithstanding the initial bonhomie, external broadcast again fell into disuse as never ever its full potential as a significant tool for public diplomacy and instrument of foreign policy and international relations was fully comprehended, explored and hence not exploited by those in the business of diplomacy. Unlike elsewhere in the world; diplomacy, foreign policy and external broadcast continued to be conducted in silos. Over the years, this disconnect got ossified. World around was however changing in the meanwhile and was changing fast. Countries with whom we unfortunately have a zero sum relations were making strides in the domain of public diplomacy through the medium of radio adding language after language to their bouquet and were adopting modern technology to reach out to the world. In contrast, external broadcast here was gasping and battling out the institutional apathy. Four years ago when after an eventful tenure in the Ministry of Rural Development involving nationwide implementation of development communication strategies, I joined External Services Division for my second stint, the place appeared frozen in time and like a living fossil as I and my wife who accompanied me walked into the place. An all pervading gloom was writ large on every face as the diiktat for it's imminent closure had been received and everyone was waiting for the inevitable final pull of the hangman's lever. It was at this crucial cross roads of ESD's history , I was called upon by the Director General and given the mantle of External broadcast and reposed his trust . I felt humbled as giants and stalwarts of Indian and World broadcasting like Ms. Mehra Masani, P.C. Chatterjee, K.P. Shunghloo, U.L. Baruah , N.L Chawla among others had adorned this position. But the pygmy in me refused to be the daunted and become the " First minister in King's government to preside over its liquidation." Instead, I took the bull by horns. I gave myself 6 months to script the turn around story of External Broadcast or quit. It indeed was a tall order. Enthusing the colleagues who had their spirits at bootlace level and gaining their confidence to partner in this uphill ride and bringing the external stakeholders on board had to be done quickly. A technological leapfrogging was also crucial. I must confess, once convinced all my colleagues and my seniors particularly Mr. Fayyaz Sheheryar, the DG stood by me. The culmination of all that is, today no longer anyone talks about closing down ESD or it being " a colossal national wastage and Rs. 100 crore going down the drain." Now the talk is about strengthening the ESD. We have added new services. Gone digital. Have 28 multimedia Websites and Apps of international standard for our language services. We are now present on alternate platforms like Radio Garden, Tune in, Alexa voice command system. Our relationship with MEA is no longer episodic. We are reconnecting to our listeners and patrons every passing day on every platform in which we have made our presence.

It is in this backdrop, the celebration of the first External Broadcast Day and the beginning of the observence of the 80th anniversary is personally significant and gratifying for me.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
24 - 30 September 2018

Solar activity was at very low levels throughout the period. Region
2723 (S08, L=356 class/area Dro/030 on 30 Sep) developed on 29 Sep,
but was already showing signs of decay as of this report, and
remained inactive. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available
satellite imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reach
high levels on 24 - 28 Sep, then decreased to moderate levels on 29
- 30 Sep. A peak flux of 6,202 pfu was observed on 24/2020 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to unsettled levels
throughout the entire period, from 24 - 30 Sep, under very subtle CH
HSS influence. Solar wind speeds averaged near 430 km/s through most
of the period, but did see an increase to reach a peak of 505 km/s
on 30/0158 UTC. Total field strength ranged between 1 nT to 7 nT,
while the Bz component was variable between +/- 6 nT through the
period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
01 October - 27 October 2018

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the
outlook period, with a slight chance for C-class flare activity.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at moderate levels from 1 - 8 Oct, and again from 26
- 27 Oct. High levels are expected from 9 - 25 Oct following
elevated solar wind speeds associated to recurrent CH HSS activity.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled
levels from 1 - 6 Oct, with isolated active levels likely on 1 Oct.
Conditions are then expected to reach G1 (Minor) storm levels on 7 -
8 Oct, with G2 (Moderate) storm levels likely on 8 Oct, due to a
positive polarity CH HSS. A brief return to unsettled levels is
likely on 9 Oct, with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely returning on 10
Oct as CH HSS effects persist. Active levels are expected on 11 Oct
as CH HSS effects taper off. Mostly quiet to unsettled levels are
expected from 12 - 18 Oct, with isolated active periods likely on 14
and 18 Oct. G1 levels are likely again on 19 Oct as another CH HSS
influences the magnetic field. Isolated active periods are expected
early on 20 Oct before conditions decrease to be at mostly unsettled
levels throughout the remainder of the outlook period (21 - 27 Oct)
as CH HSS effects continue to wane.
