Three successful transmissions from SAQ Grimeton on Alexanderson Day 2018

Alexanderson Day, July 1st, 2018, three transmissions with the old Alexanderson alternator SAQ at World Heritage Grimeton Radio Station, Sweden took place at 08:45, 10:45 and 12:45 UTC on 17,2 kHz CW. A video stream from all three transmissions was also broadcasted on our YouTube channel.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 67.7 67.4 67.3

There had been 7 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) less than 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 9 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.

There had been 43 of the past 46 days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.

In 2018 there had been 130 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
active to quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 2 2 2 3 2 2 4.

The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between 27 & 5.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 382 &
344 km/s.

Global Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast-

HF radio wave propagation condition “trend” on Aug 12, 2018- minor

Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.

It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.

I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.

Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.

On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-

Solar activity was very low.

The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 69.5 69.5 69.4

There had been 6 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) less than 70.

The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.

There had been 8 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.

There had been 42 of the past 45 days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.

In 2018 there had been 129 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 1 0 0 1 1 1 1.

The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between 4 & 2.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between  361
& 346 km/s.

Global Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast-

Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.

Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-

3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day,

28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day.

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.

During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.

And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.

I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.

And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

ABC’s shortwave cutback ‘weakens thin link’ for Pacific, says PMC

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s cutback in services to the Asia-Pacific region has “weakened the thin link” that many parts of the region have with the “outside world”, says the Pacific Media Centre.

In a public submission to the government review of broadcasting to the region, the PMC said that the situation had impelled Radio New Zealand to “stretch their resources to do more, to ‘make up’ for what has been removed”.

The ABC switched off shortwave services to the region in 2017.

Calling for the ABC to restore services, the PMC said “Australian broadcasting from the South Pacific is a sorry loss to people and cultures – as we know them well from the accumulation of studies and from our own media production exercises at this centre”.

The PMC at Auckland University of Technology publishes the independent Asia Pacific Report, Pacific Media Watch freedom monitoring service, Pacific Journalism Review and other publications.

AUT’s radio major coordinator in the School of Communication Studies, Dr Matt Mollgaard, stresses the importance of broadcasting services from countries such as Australia and New Zealand to the South Pacific.

“[Broadcasters] help to strengthen local media outlets in the Islands, further enhancing democratic developments in the region,” Dr Mollgaard said in his PJR research paper cited by the PMC submission.

He said broadcasting services like RNZ Pacific and Radio Australia were prime examples of upholding media freedom and encouraging democratic life.

The PMC submission was prepared by director Professor David Robie and centre research associate and PJR editorial board member Dr Lee Duffield.

Restoration of Radio Australia services and other ABC services that may be made accessible in the South Pacific region, would be “highly positive”, said the submission.

“It would be most widely welcomed in the island countries, valued, and made good use of as in the past, with assuredly benefits to the originating media service and to Australian interests.”

The review is looking at the reach of Australia’s media in the Asia-Pacific region and if shortwave radio has become an outdated technology.

The submission period closed last Friday and the review of Australian broadcasting services is currently underway.

Public submissions have been overwhelmingly in favour of restoration of services.

‘Tok Pisin broadcasts’
In one public submission published by Asia Pacific Report, development worker Elizabeth Cox, who has 40 years of experience of living and working in Papua New Guinea, appealed for the return of a “revitalised Radio Australia”.

“Bring back Radio Australia. Ensure it reaches all rural areas,” she said.

“Provide Tok Pisin broadcasts. This is one of the best forms of aid you can give PNG.”

“A revitalised Radio Australia will give the PNG and other international audiences a chance to shape content and direction – it can be linked to social media and inform and lift the quality of much of the local political conversation,” she said.

“The new Radio Australia should be a global friend and ally, not a coloniser or converter. It should encourage debate, conversation and support critical, independent and objective opinion.”

The Vanuatu Daily Post submission calling for restoration of services said broadcast communications were an essential projection of soft power.

“The lack of access to the eyes and ears—and therefore the hearts and minds—of Pacific islanders works to the detriment of Australian interests,” the newspaper said.

“It also works against the interest of Pacific nations.” (asiapacificreport.nz)

What`s all this? WBCQ schedule just shows ``Available Time Slot`` for 8-9 pm EDT Thursday --- was that an ex-VORW time too? Now not on 7490 sked at all..

Recheck at 0024, TimTron is monologuing about his bout with Lyme disease, how he takes 7 meds in the morning, no alcohol but pot OK, and he is now recovering, but has had other medical problems such as at 0030 a tick on his dick, which the studio audience finds quite amusing. ** U S A. 6155, Aug 10 at 0000, what`s this? Huge S9+25 loud, distorted wideband signal centered approximately here where normally there is nothing; music, then introducing a padre on a Spanish talk show. I have quickly switched to FM tuning mode which makes it somewhat readable, like other such spurs out of RHC. 

I suspect it`s WEWN, totally out of whack again, which is supposed to be just starting 5970 after QSY from day frequency 12050. 6155 cuts off abruptly at 0002 before I can copy anything further. Retune to 5970 and find it S9+20 of dead air until off at 0002:40*; back on at *0004:30, but modulation on and off. I am 95% sure the FM blob was this same WEWN transmitter.

is dated 2017! And fails to show UT, just local AM & PM times in Miami, Mexico City and Buenos Aires --- but are those for DST or standard time??? Assuming the start of the 5970 block at 0000 means 7 pm in Miami, as if it were winter, this Thursday/UT Friday hour was/is ``Por la calzada de Emaús``. Of course, most of their shows could be hosted by a padre, if not by a madre; definitely Roman Catholic, and there are not many such international SW stations in Spanish.

24 hours later, August 10 at 2359, I`m checking again, but no show circa 6155, just open carrier on 5970 --- and no carrier at 0033 August 11 nor yet any 6155-FM. This station is an engineering disaster (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 7315, August 10 at 0010, dead air instead of Voice of Vietnam relay in English by WHRI. 0019 retune, dead air, then praise music fill in English starts, still no VOV. At 0036, gospel huxter in English, not VOV in Spanish! 

Next night, August 11 at 0031, VOV in Spanish has resumed. After years and years, WHRI still has problems getting this relay on air properly. Why does Hanoi put up with it, or do they even know, likewise the Christian ads between VOV languages? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

The K7RA Solar Update

Spaceweather.com reported on August 8, 2018 that “Solar minimum conditions are in effect. The Sun has been without sunspots for 39 of the past 42 days. To find a similar stretch of blank suns, you have to go back to 2009 when the Sun was experiencing the deepest solar minimum in a century. Solar minimum has returned, bringing extra cosmic rays, long-lasting holes in the Sun's atmosphere, and strangely pink auroras."
For the third week in a row, we report an average daily sunspot number of 1.6. Why? It seems that in the past three reporting periods (including this week) there was only one day with any sunspots and each time that daily sunspot number was 11.
Average daily solar flux rose slightly from 68 to 69.7, while average daily planetary A index rose from 5 to 5.7, and average mid-latitude A index changed from 5.1 to 6.9.
Predicted solar flux is 70 on August 10, 69 on August 11-22, 70 on August 23-31, 69 on September 1-18, and 70 on September 19-23.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on August 10-11, then 8, 10, 8, 5, 12, and 10 on August 12-17, 5 on August 18-19, then 20 and 12 on August 20-21, 5 on August 22 through September 1, then 8, 12, 12 and 8 on September 2-5, 5 on September 6-7, 8 on September 8-9, 5 on September 10-11, then 8 and 12 on September 12-13, 5 on September 14-15, then 20 and 12 on September 16-17, and 5 on September 18-23.

Dick Ferry, K2KA, in Westford, Massachusetts had this 6-meter report: "On August 4, 2018 we had another epic opening on 6 meters from the east coast. From 2129z to 2254z European stations were coming in on FT8. There were so many, I had to scroll the receive window. I worked three new countries: SV9, E73, and YT9. Heard many more that I couldn't work: 4X, OD5, ZB, LY, OZ, TK, and UT7.
“It was not quite as good as the June 13, 2016 opening which lasted over 3 hours, but very good. Sometimes it is hard to work DX on FT8 when there is a lot of fading. It's luck to catch the signals right. This opening was solid though with signals as high as +10."

Propagation News – 12 August 2018

The Sun remained spotless this week as the solar flux index stuck resolutely around the 70 mark. The tiny sunspot that made an appearance on the first of August didn’t come to much and had vanished by the third. 

This underlines that we must be getting closer to sunspot minimum, although don’t expect to see any massive upturn until 2019. 

Geomagnetic conditions were mostly settled last week, although the effects of a coronal hole did send the K-index to three on Tuesday, the 7th. 

Another equatorial-located coronal hole was rotating into position as this report was being written, so prepare for potentially unsettled conditions this weekend, the 11th and 12th. 

Looking further ahead NOAA predicts unsettled geomagnetic conditions around the 17th and again on the 20th and 21st due to coronal hole activity. The solar flux will remain around the 70 mark. 

HF wise, conditions have been a little lacklustre with large parts of the bands devoid of signals, apart from the FT8 watering holes. 

The 40, 30 and 20m bands still provide the most activity during daylight hours, with occasional openings on 17m metres. 80m and 40m are the “go to” bands after sunset, which of course is now getting earlier each day. 

However, the ionosonde data at propquest.co.uk show there have been some consistent post-sunset HF openings up to 18MHz occurring around 2100UTC, so don’t write-off HF after dark. 

And finally, don’t forget it is International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend on 18 and 19 August. 

VHF and up:

Last Sunday EI3KD worked D4Z on the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa on 144 MHz, at 4163km. This CW contact sets a new Region One tropo record. 

After all the tropo excitement, meteor scatter gets only secondary billing in the VHF news this week. The Perseids meteor shower’s broad peak hits maximum this Sunday so the VHF meteor scatter frequencies should be buzzing with meteor pings. Check out the ON4KST.info 50/70 and 144 MHz chats to see where the activity is and look upwards for shooting stars if you have dark skies. 

The next week looks likely to change our world of constant tropo into a more unsettled weather type with low pressure systems and fronts moving towards the country. This will mean that rain scatter will come to the fore on the GHz bands. There could still be a little tropo around, especially over sea paths in the south, but not very reliable ones. 

Looking at sporadic E propagation, last week we continued to get evening digimode openings to the US. We will have a return to the unsettled weather, which implies the return of a jet stream pattern, mainly across northern Europe. 

This will favour paths across to Scandinavia, whereas to the south we may have to rely upon either weaker jet streams or upper ridge patterns to come to our rescue. 

August is still part of the sporadic E season, but it is not as widespread as earlier and perhaps harder to work. 

Moon declination is high but goes negative on Wednesday so there are still plenty of EME opportunities available, with increasing losses.
