Greetings to my fellow hamateur radio and SWL radio enthusiasts around the
world.
Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 70.3 69.6 70.2
There had been 5 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) less than 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 7 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
There had been 41 of the past 44 days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 128 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 1 1 1 1 0 1 1.
The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between 5 & 2.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 380 &
279 km/s.

6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,
13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.
During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.
Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).
Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-
3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,
6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-
NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal
intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices
interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2018 by Thomas F.
Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is
allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.
All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to
see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

Nueva frecuencia de Radio Martí para Cuba el 13 de agosto
El Director de la Oficina de Transmisiones a Cuba (OCB), Tomás Regalado, compareció este martes en el noticiero del mediodía de Radio Martí, y anunció que el próximo lunes 13 de agosto se incorporará otra frecuencia de onda corta para escuchar las emisiones de Radio Martí en la isla.
Regalado calificó el anuncio de “buena noticia técnica y también emocional y espiritual”, y recalcó que Radio Martí es un vehículo de las posibilidades y opciones para el pueblo cubano.
“En breve se estará ofreciendo otra opción al pueblo de Cuba para que escuche en cualquiera de las frecuencias disponibles, en cualquiera de los medios que tengan las emisiones de Radio Martí”, precisó el ex alcalde de Miami.
Destacó en su comparecencia que algunas personas decían que era difícil ampliar las frecuencias hacia la isla, “pero hay voluntad política y de trabajo".
"El lunes 13 de agosto se inaugura una frecuencia más de onda corta para los oyentes en Cuba”, dijo.
La nueva frecuencia estará en los 11860 kHz y “estamos al aire las 24 horas al día con tres frecuencias”, destacó el director de OCB.
En relación con Televisión Martí, Regalado declaró que muy pronto se anunciará una nueva programación. Precisó que “inequívocamente Televisión Martí se está viendo en territorio cubano, de una forma ininterrumpida, totalmente clara, de una forma viable”. Y cuando Cuba sea libre y soberana habrá un espacio en la historia para las “comunidades Martí”.
Adelantó que ya está documentado con video que hay “compatriotas que están viendo nítidamente la imagen de Televisión Martí”.
El 5 de septiembre Regalado hará una presentación sobre el tema en Washington ante la Junta de Gobernadores de las Transmisiones Internacionales (BBG) de EEUU.
El Director de Noticias de Radio, Televisión y Digital, Jorge Jáuregui, acompañó al director en el espacio informativo. Declaró que junto a esa nueva frecuencia irán más informaciones, programas de análisis y noticieros.
Puso como ejemplo el noticiero matutino que será de 6 a 8 de la mañana, de lunes a viernes. En estos espacios se ofrecerán más noticias con inmediatez, invitados especiales, deportes, etc, insistió Jáuregui.
Radio Martí salió al aire por primera vez el 20 de mayo de 1985, desde Washington D.C., y luego se movió a Miami, Florida, en 1996. Las instalaciones crecieron en 1990 con Televisión Martí y años después con la página digital Martinoticias.com.

To which I replied: ``Says RTM closed down SW permanently on August 9 [sic] in past tense even tho it is still August 8 in Brasil. No more QRM to Zanzibar on 11735!! But try today in case it still be on until 2100v* one last time. Other frequencies 5940v and 9530 were not so well heard``
11734.98 is approx. VP frequency of RTM; at 1857 Aug 8 it does sound like Brazilian intonation. Usual closedown of both is circa 2100, so I`m remonitoring at 2046, when both are stronger, but RTM atop, now measured on 11734.972. 2058 is talking about FM frequencies, website. By 2101, ZBC is off and RTM still on alone about FM, 2102 song, still past 2108. By 2229 no signal on 11735 (while much stronger 11780 RNA is still in well).
Meanwhile, Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain informed the WOR iog at 2009 UT:
``Radio Transmundial, today still on air 11735 but announced will cease at 0000 Brazilian time --- 11735, Radio Transmundial, Santa María, 1940-2006 , 08-08, today still on air, religious program, male, ID "Transmundial", at 2150 they announced will cease short wave transmissions at 0000 hours 09 August. Slight interference from Zanzibar`` [which strangely had come back on]
I reply: That would be 0300 UT, presumably meaning UT August 9 altho it could mean August 10, as ``midnight`` is always ambiguous as to which day it pertain. Why don`t people realize this in any language??
By 0155 UT August 9, no signal detectable on 11735 (but 11780 RNA is still in well, altho doubtless higher powered; 11735 per WRTH is the second-highest powered ZY at 50 kW). It would normally be off after 2100 unless they prolong it for a finale. The lower frequencies would be nightlier. But can`t hear any carrier around 5940v with heavy splash from 5935 WWCR. 9530 a JBA carrier which could easily be 4765 x 2, Progreso Cuba. Glenn.

So another SW station bites the dust, but look at the bright side: one less gospel-huxter. Manuel Méndez laments it and says in Google translation, improved by gh:

The best time, here in Spain, to tune into Rádio Transmundial was around 1900 UT at its usual frequency of 11735 kHz. Before that time, normally it used to be very interfered with by Zanzibar on the same frequency, but after 1900 the signal from Zanzibar tends to decrease a lot and the Brazilian increases, and at 2000 hours, many days only hear Rádio Transmundial, and other days with slight interference from the African station.
The undersigned was listening, for the last time, to Rádio Transmundial at 11735 kHz, between 1940 and 2020 hours on August 8, and, indeed, at 1950 they announced that at 0000 hours on August 9 they would leave short wave, giving thanks for our having accompanied them for more than 20 years and that, due to technological advances, it was the best decision they could make, because now many people listened to them through mobile devices and the internet.
From 2000 on, the signal was good here in Lugo, heard loud and clear, SINPO 34433.
"Rádio Transmundial, para todo o mundo ouvir", that's what the identification slogan says, but from now on, it will be heard by many fewer listeners. This station had strong coverage through short wave all over Brazilian territory and in other countries, due to the good quality of the signal, in comparison to other Brazilian stations, and the good quality of its programs, besides religious programs, always with moderate talk, broadcast news, music and other programs.
Surely they will lose many listeners in many areas of Brazil and Latin America, especially in the immense rural areas where there is not easy access to the internet.
"Rádio Transmundial, for all the world to hear", does not want us to hear it, as of now, at 11735 kHz, with its usual programs "Bom Dia RTM", "História das Missões" and many other programs, and follows the fashion by other stations to focus only on the internet, while shortwave, especially in many parts of the world, is still the most suitable means to reach a multitude of listeners.

I wonder if all the .XXX exact measurements for SOH are from Wolfgang Büschel`s exhaustive SDR survey now several months old? Just yesterday I had only CNR1 jamming on 9200, but an hour earlier at 1142.

Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather
forecasting I
have 45 years of experience and in solar, space and geomagnetic weather
forecasting 34 years.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 70.6 69.6 69.8
There had been 4 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) less than 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 7 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 128 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1.
The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between 5 & 3.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between
428 & 354 km/s.
Global Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast-

S4-7 at day,

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.
During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.
Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).
Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-
3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3
at day,
6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and
S4-7 at day,
13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at
night and S3-4 at day,
21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day,

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are

range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 70.6 69.6 69.8
There had been 4 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) less than 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 7 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 128 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at a
quiet geomagnetic condition of 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1.
The 24 hour period planetary A index (Ap) maximum and minimum values ranged
between 5 & 3.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between
428 & 354 km/s.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave

During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.
Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).
Southern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b-
3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3

HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.

I&B ministry and MEA at odds over All India Radio external service
The external services division of All India Radio (AIR) is caught in a turf war between the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB), which runs it and the ministry of external affairs (MEA), which is expected to fund it.
While the MIB wants the service to continue and even expand; MEA has been suggesting shutting down the programmes, pointing out that the service offered through short wave transmission has outlived its utility and does not attract listeners abroad, said an MIB official aware of the developments.
According to this MIB official, the service, which was started soon after the outbreak of World War II has emerged as a bone of contention between the two ministries, as the cost of running the shows is high and the MEA has been unwilling to pick the tab.
AIR is a broadcast arm of public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and anchors the external services division (ESD).
“As per the Prasar Bharati Act, which was passed in Parliament, the external services division has to be completely funded by the MEA. However, the ministry has not paid since the service started, despite the fact that it plays a crucial role in diplomacy and outreach,” an official of the Prasar Bharati said.
The official said the broadcaster has also raised the issue of revamping the infrastructure with the MIB, pointing out how the installations are outdated and need replacement. “The MIB too has not released funds for replacement of equipment,” the official said.
On the need for the service, the official said feedback from listeners’ abroad acts as “eyes and ears of the government” and allows them a peek into perceptions abroad. “The short wave transmitters are used to send content meant to popularise and propagate Indian point of view on contentious issues,” the official said.
Another official of Prasar Bharati said feedback on issues raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio show Man Ki Baat; policy decisions or bilateral issues are duly shared with the PMO, MEA and the home ministry.
“The feedback that we received during the trial of Kulbhushan Jhadav (Indian national accused of being a spy by Pakistan) gave us a valuable insight into what people abroad, including in Pakistan felt about the issue,” he said.
To keep the service alive, AIR has asked the MEA to pay Rs 97 crore for the financial years 2017-18 and 2018-19 and the same amount going forward year on year, but so far the MEA has so far not responded.
According to the information provided by AIR about the service, the external broadcasts were started on October 1, 1939 “purely as a tool for propaganda for the Allies during the World War II with a service in Pushto language to counter the German Radio Blitzkrieg in the region and supplement the efforts by the BBC in this part of the world.”
Since then, the service offers news bulletins and other programmes across 108 countries in 27 languages as a “vital link between India and rest of the World, specially with those countries where the interest of India are intertwined because of Indian population”, AIR website says.
The foreign language services include Arabic, Baluchi, Burmese, Chinese, Dari, French, Indonesian, Persian, and Baloch; plans are under way to start services in German, Japanese and Bhutanese.
A former Prasar Bharati official who had concurred with MEA’s suggestion to shut down the service told HT: “No one outside India ever hears Akashvani external services — over short wave or medium wave. It’s a waste of public funds. A few years ago as a test case we had asked a few ambassadors to give us feedback on the popularity of the shows; at least two wrote back saying that the frequencies of the programmes in their respective countries could not be found.”
This official went on to add that maintaining short wave transmission installation is a huge drain on the exchequer as they “guzzle power” and the equipment is “expensive to maintain.”
While an official of the MEA, requesting anonymity said the issue of shutting down the service is “under consideration”, director general of AIR F Shehryar said the biggest problem being faced by the division is that the infrastructure has not been upgraded.
Declining to comment on whether the service is being shut down, he said: “We have not been able to replace about three-decade old short wave transmitters which are directed to beam signal to the strategic locations. Usually one transmitter has a life of 8-10 years and once they cross this limit, the valves go off and the transmitters stop catering to the service area.” (hindustantimes.com)

Radio Transmundial, para todo o mundo ouvir”, como solía identificarse, con
nocturnidad, pues cerró sorpresivameante en la noche, y alevosía, dejó la onda
corta esta emblemática emisora religiosa brasileña el día 9 de agosto a las 0000
hora de Brasilia, 0300 UTC. Sólo unas horas antes, en la tarde del 8 de agosto,
el Dx-ista brasileño Daniel Wyllyans había informado, a través de Hard Core DX
que, según le comunicaban de la emisora, esta dejaría de emitir en la onda corta
el dìa 9 de agosto
La mejor hora, aquí en España, para sintonizar a Radio
Transmundial era a partir de las 1900 UTC en su habitual frecuencia de 11735
kHz. Antes de esa hora, normalmente solía estar muy interferida por Zanzibar en
la misma frecuencia, pero a partir de las 1900 la señal de Zanzibar suele decaer
mucho y la de la brasileña iba a más, y sobre las 2000 horas, muchos días ya
solo se escucha a Radio Transmundial y otros con una leve interferencia de la
estación africana.
El que suscribe estuvo escuchando, por última vez, a
Radio Transmundial en 11735 kHz, entre las 1940 y las 2020 horas del día 8 de
agosto, y, efectivamente, a las 1950 anunciaron que a las 0000 horas del día 9
de agosto dejarían la onda corta, dando las gracias por haberlos acompañado por
más de 20 años y que, debido a los avances tecnológicos era la mejor decisión
que podía tomar, pues ahora mucha gente los escuchaba a través de dispositivos
móviles e internet.
A partir de las 2000 la señal era buena aquí en Lugo,
escuchándose fuerte y claro, SINPO 34433.
“Radio Transmundial, para todo
o mundo ouvir”, así reza el slogan identificativo, pero a partir de ahora, será
escuchada por muchos menos oyentes. Esta emisora tenía una fuerte penetración a
través de la onda corta en todo el territorio brasileño y en otros países,
debido a la buena calidad de la señal, en comparación con otras emisoras
brasileñas, y a la buena calidad de sus programas, pues además de los programas
religiosos, siempre con un discurso moderado, emitía noticias, música y otros
programas.
Seguro que perderá muchos oyentes en muchas zonas de Brasil y de
Latinoamérica, sobre todo en las inmesas zonas rurales en donde no hay fácil
acceso a internet.
“Radio Transmundial, para todo o mundo ouvir”, no
quiere que la oigamos, a partir de ahora, en los 11735 kHz, con sus habibuales
programas “Bom Dia RTM”, “Hostoria das Missioes” y otros muchos programas, y
sigue la moda de otras emisoras de centrarse sólo en internet, cuando la onda
corta, especialmente en muchos lugares del mundo, sigue siendo el medio más
idoneo para llegar a multitud de oyentes.

** AUSTRALIA. 5055, August 8 at 1146, JBA carrier from presumed 4KZ Queensland, despite storm noise level and switch to indoor longwire for safety. During July, Ron Howard had noted it cutting off the air by a timer, a few seconds earlier from one day to the next, reaching 1148:52* by July 31, so I am expecting carrier to vanish sometime during the 1148 or maybe 1147 minute --- but it does not! I am about to tire of listening to its JBA tone with BFO on 5054, when finally it stops at approx. 1157:11.5*, wouldn`t you know it, when I have glanced away from my watch. Perhaps Ron can confirm the new timing.
4835, that accomplished, still on the indoor longwire, I retune for the other low power Aussie, OzyRadio in NSW which Ron says had reactivated August 3 after a monthlong absence. 4840 WWCR has just closed at 1158, helping to audiblize the 4835 JBA carrier, but which here could also be Sikkim. Ozy normally stays on much later, far too long after sunrise here, so I am not going to log it by matching a cutoff time like with 4KZ. I shall be very lucky ever to hear something really identifiable from OzyR, such as the ex-RA version of ``Waltzing Matilda`` it plays at some set times (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

13660, Aug 8 at 1323, RHC is S4-S6 here and mostly readable, despite being a leapfrog mixing product another 40 kHz lower of squealy S9+10 13740 over normal S9+20 13700. But there is *no* matching leapfrog the other side on 13780; what`s not with that?? Nor are there any extremely distorted FM spurblobs today out of the 13700 transmitter. ** INDONESIA [non]. 7290.00, Aug 8 at 1126, JBA carrier, not off-frequency, so not reactivated RRI Nabire, but rather after 1100, CNR1 Beijing site, per NDXC/Aoki. Window for Nabire is when I should stay in deep sleep. Aoki says it starts at 0500, but Ron Howard does not report it before 0742 and off as early as 0910 to as late as 1026*. FWIW, Nabire sunset is 0903 UT, varying little as almost equatorial. Would not hurt to check later the ex-night frequency 6125, which they stopped using long before 7289.92 quit a biyear ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

What a pity that NM`s #1 AM station purvey this crap (and also subordinates itself to an FM translator, which surely blox Duques from hearing 100 kW Gallup 94.5 line-of-sight at elevations in The Heights, 200 km/125 miles; now called KYAT with a Navajo name, and format/country).
KKOB relay is K233CG, on Sandia Crest, 3251 meters AMSL, with 250 watts direxional WSW across the city. KKOB already had its own full-power Cresttop FM on 93.3, but separately programmed.
Back to 770: I should not be hearing this big dominant signal at 5:13 am MDT, pre-sunrise, certainly not the 230-watt fill-in from Santa Fe, but the 50 kW main transmitter from the North Valley of ABQ, which is supposed to be nulling toward us and WABC, so either the pattern is way out of whack or they are just running non-direxional day pattern already. (BTW, no sign of TPs on 774, not in season yet, also edged by music from 780 KSPI Stillwater.)
Speaking of ABQ, later this morning at 1350-1455 UT, I catch repeat of the new season première of `Better Call Saul` on AMC cable. I`ve never followed this nor its sequel `Breaking Bad` despite the ABQ locations, out of general distaste for the subject matter, no matter how great the acting be reviewed; but decided to give this a chance. Welcome to my “not for profit” daily W4HM Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation
Forecast.
It’s the only daily global HF radio wave propagation forecast produced on
the planet.
I'm a retired heliophysicist, terrestrial meteorologist/climatologist,
physical oceanographer and one of the few on the planet with advanced
education and forecast experience in all disciplines. In terrestrial weather

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
unsettled to quiet geomagnetic condition of 2 2 1 2 3 2 3 2.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 366 &
281 km/s.

We are now firmly in the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.
During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in
the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower
than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere
is higher and the layer less concentrated.
Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that
the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via
short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also
when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer
propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).

We are now firmly in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave
propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are
most unbalanced across the equator during this time period.
During the southern hemisphere winter season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency
range closes sooner due to less sun light illuminating the ionosphere than
in the northern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is higher
than in the northern hemisphere as the F2 layer of the ionosphere is lower
in height and more concentrated.
This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP
HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the
late 1980’s but I’m sorry to say that it can’t be distributed to the general
public. It does outperform VOA CAP.
And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the
SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in
the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary.
I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio
receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if
and when necessary.
And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the
globe.
The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25
watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts
and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.
The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on
100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array
antenna.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave
propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable
by the average radio enthusiast.
Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced
during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during
the summer and winter solstices.
Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the
sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the
ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the
maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer
critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path.
The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal
absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave
propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.
Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm
static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and
mostly bad.
Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio
wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.
Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency
(MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to
geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 &
greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of
the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D
layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves,
elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton
flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a
negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a
particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and
also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 &
greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0)
background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux
at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL
HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,
something that happens rarely.
1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.
2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.
3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation
of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.
4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days
consecutively are best.
5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer
than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.
6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).
7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days
consecutively, greater than C1 best.
8.) No current STRATWARM alert.
9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,
indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora
absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF
signals, when the Kp is above 3.
10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery
time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

W4HM Solar Cycle 24 Update and Solar Cycle 25 Forecast- Short and to the
point.
Solar minimum may begin later this year and may last longer than any
previous solar cycle in the 20th century. When solar cycle 25 finally gets
underway it could be the weakest since the middle of the 19th century.
Another Dalton type lesser grand solar minimum may occur with a
corresponding cooling of earth’s climate. This would negate anthropogenic
climate change if it were occurring which it isn’t.
On February 1, 2008 I forecasted that solar cycle 24 would be the smallest
solar cycle in the past 100 years. That forecast verified. I also forecasted
that solar cycle 25 would be almost non nonexistent.

Important Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Indices-
Solar activity was very low.
The daily solar flux index numbers (DSFI) were 70.1 69.5 69.2
There had been 3 consecutive days with a 2000 UTC daily solar flux index
number (DSFI) lower than 70.
The official daily sunspot number (DSSN) was 0.
There had been 6 consecutive days with an official daily sunspot number
(DSSN) of 0.
In 2018 there had been 127 days with an official daily sunspot number (DSSN)
of 0.
The 24 hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) had been at an
unsettled to quiet geomagnetic condition of 2 2 1 2 3 2 3 2.
The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between 366 &
281 km/s.

propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least
north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial
propagation (TEP).
