We are now in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave propagation conditions.

This means generally poor HF radio wave propagation conditions in the northern hemisphere especially at day and generally good HF radio wave propagation conditions in the southern hemisphere especially at day.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced

during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during

the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the

sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the

ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the

maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer

critical frequency (FoF2).

Global Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast-

The HF radio wave propagation conditions are improving.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION-

80-60 (75-60) meters- poor to fair at night and very poor at day,

40-30 (41-25) meters- fair to good at night and poor at day,

20-17 (22-15) meters- fair to good at night and poor to fair at day,

15 (13) meters- very poor at night and poor to fair at day,

12(11) meters- very poor at night and poor at day.

10 (11) meters- very poor at night and very poor at day.

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION-

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is based on the W4HM_Cap HF radio wave propagation prediction software.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on 100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical VOA type curtain array antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave

propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable by the average radio enthusiast.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced

during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during

the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the

sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the

ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the

maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer

critical frequency (FoF2).

The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal

absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave

propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm

static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and

mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio

wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Conditions On

Friday June 2, 2017-

Solar activity was low.

Earth's geomagnetic field was at a quiet level.

The three daily solar flux index (SFI) numbers were 78.3 78.2 77.0.

The official daily sunspot number (SSN) was 19.

In 2017 officially there were 38 days with a daily sunspot number (SSN) of

0.

Considering that solar minimum won't occur for approximately 2 more years,

+/- 1 year, daily SSN's of 0 are occurring now unusually early.

In 2016 officially there were 32 days with a daily sunspot number (SSN) of

0. Considering that solar minimum won't occur for approximately three more

years, seeing daily SSN's of 0 occurring now is unusually early.

As we move forward towards the next solar minimum between solar cycle #24

and #25 the number of days with a 0 daily SSN will steadily increase.

Eventually every day for many, many, many months will see a 0, the big goose

egg.

In 2008 I forecasted solar cycle 24 to be the weakest in the past 100 years

and that forecast verified. I also forecasted that solar cycle 25 would be

virtually nonexistent, similar to the Dalton type solar minimum that

occurred in the early 1800's. Other than sunspot magnetic polarity it will probably be very difficult to determine when solar cycle 24 ended and solar cycle 25 began.

There was 1 newly risen and/or emerged official sunspot group.

Sunspot group #12661 was located near N06E55 with a magnetically complex beta-gamma magnetic signature. It has the potential to produce medium size M class solar flares.

There was 1 unofficial and as of yet unnumbered earth facing sunspot group located near

N15W22.

There was 4 earth facing C class or larger solar flares the largest being an

C8.0.

No day side high latitude solar fade outs (SFO) (also called polar cap absorption) occurred.

No earth facing coronal mass ejections (CME) occurred.

No earth facing collapsing magnetic filament eruptions occurred.

The twenty four hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) was at quiet geomagnetic conditions of

2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1.

The Kp geomagnetic indices are-

0-2- quiet

3- unsettled

4- active

5- minor geomagnetic storming

6- moderate

7- strong

8- severe

9- extreme

10- our atmosphere just got cooked off like on Mars and we are all dead.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum planetary A index (Ap) ranged between

6 and 3,

which was at quiet geomagnetic conditions.

The Ap geomagnetic indices are-

0-7- quiet

8-15 unsettled

16-29- active

30-49- minor geomagnetic storm

50-99- major

100-400- severe

>401- our atmosphere just got cooked off like on Mars and we are all dead.

The 24 hour period averaged energetic proton flux was at a background level below 10 MeV.

The 24 hour period averaged background x-ray flux was at C8.08.

The 24 hour period averaged vertical component (Bz) of earth's geomagnetic magnetic field was at

-10.44 nT South.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum disturbance storm time index (Dst) ranged between

-3 and +29 nT.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between

401 and 324 km/s.

There was 1 newly risen and/or emerged earth facing trans equatorial (CH) coronal hole, #806. It will set around the west limb of the sun in approximately 2 days.

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

intellectual property. Therefore the radio wave propagation indices

interpretations contained herein is copyrighted © 1988-2017 by Thomas F.

Giella, W4HM, all rights reserved. Reproduction of information herein is

allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given.

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to

see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,

something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation

of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days

consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer

than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days

consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,

indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora

absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF

signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery

time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A

positive number is best.

11.) Rising positive T index number. The T Index tracks with the F2 layer

critical frequency (foF2) and sunspot number (SSN) and indicates the

capability of the F2 layer to refract RF signals.

12.) Galactic cosmic rays decrease to -3 units below zero and trending

towards zero.

13.) Energetic electron flux levels no greater than 2 MeV (2+0).

14. A solar wind speed of less than 300 km/s for several days consecutively.

May 28, we observed in our latitudes minor storm event, local K-index has
reached value of 5.
Next week, we expect geomagnetic activity decrease, therfore, at most
quiet to unsettled conditions. As mentined above, some isolated active
events are still possible but we do not expect K = 4 exceeded.

** ARGENTINA [non]. 11580, Friday June 2 at 1358, WRMI with jazz music fill after RAE French hour, 1359.5 WNYW-style ID, 1400 once again RAE Spanish for the second day at this hour, opening with its usual music downbeat, intro as ``primera edición del primero de junio``, i.e. repeat of the Thursday 2200 on 5950.

Now we see that the WRMI sked grid has been updated to show RAE Spanish at 1400-1500 Monday-Saturday on 11580. This presumably compensates for the originally planned 0000-0100 on 7730, which has not been implemented, to the relief of a variety of programs in that span.

Due to confusion last week about the timing for RAE`s DX program in English, I am listening continually UT Saturday June 3 from 0100 on WRMI 9395, VG. This week it lasts from 0114 to 0125. I seldom quote from on-air DX programs since they hardly ever have any newsworthy material not already published in DXLD/yg. But to get us started with this show, here are my complete notes about it for the record:

Opening title seems to be ``actualidaddx.com.ar``. Asks for reception reports with recordings [it`s always loud and clear here]. DX news mostly comes from Observer, Bulgaria but not credited. Clips of each item are however added, perhaps from remote receivers or online if not receivable in Argentina. Music bridges between each: Deutscher Wetterdienst, 6180 at 20 in German with 100 watts [no, 10 kW per WRTH]. V. of Oromo Liberation from Nauen to Ethiopia, Wed/Fri/Sun 1700-1730 on 15420 with 100 kW, and ``hamming`` from Ethiopia. Belarus on SW via Germany new sked, 22-24 on 3985, 1 kW. R. Xoriyo in Somali via France at 1600-1630 on 17630, 500 kW, Tue/Sat, with hamming. DP0— Seewetter, via Kall at 0730-0800 on 7130 [sic] with 1 kW; 1200-1230 on 7310 in German Mon-Fri. Mexico, XEINFO 1560-AM full ID clip, to illustrate Grupo Radio Centro which has closed its 790, 1150 and 1030 stations, consolidating programming on 690 and 1110. CNN reports ISIS claims credit for attack on TV station in Jalalabad, east Afghanistan, killing 6 [no clip]. VOV and Cuba meet at ICRT. Production by Arnaldo Slaen, edited [translated?] by name uncopied, presented by Fernando Farrías. Outro [only] refers to program as ``DXers Special``, every Saturday. [Perhaps will be repeated on UT Tuesday again, regularly?]

After music break, 0129 plugs a new program ``talking with listeners`` based on their comments to rae@raeargentina.com but doesn`t say when it airs. This time gives frequencies only as 5850 & 7730, which apply to the 07-08 UT repeat, not now. 0131 next program is `Stories of the Bicentenary` about early racism, voiced by Mirian (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 6754-USB, June 2 at 0615 check, CHR, Trenton Military is gone again, must be sporadic. 15034-USB, June 2 at 1342, day frequency is also AWOL; not due to propagation as 14670-CUSB CHU is S9.

15034-USB, June 2 at 2012, CHR is back but very poor at S2-S3, mixture of no-report-received aviation weather from Shearwater, but with reports from Greenwood, Gander, Halifax with timestamps of 2000Z! But terminal forecasts which follow for same aerodromes, are all NRR. Then ID at 2015 and correct!!!! time as 2015 zulu. Progress (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 9745, June 2 at 2007, poor S7 signal vs high noise level of Firedragon music jamming, per Aoki vs RFA in Chinese via Kuwait at 19-21. Seems the only signal from east Asia making it here at this hour, and for sure no Bahrain, which in its area may be getting a bit of bother from Kuwait if not FD! Tnx, Dave. O, I should have pursued the AC rather than the slogan. Who would expect more than one ``V101.5``? It all depends on punxuation. In the Slogan field of the WTFDA DB (but not the other fields!), WSOL has a hyphen: V-101.5, while searching on V 101.5 with a space and no hyphen leads only to WMXV. V101.5 with no space or hyphen leads nowhere. WSOL should be required to utter ``V hyphen 101.5``!

Propagation News – 4 June 2017

Last week the solar flux index declined from the low 80s to 74. The sun was spotless, but propagation was dominated by strong geomagnetic storming on Sunday the 28th of May. Sky watchers across many northern locations reported visible aurora. This was due to the south-pointing Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field, which coupled more strongly with the Earth’s, allowing solar particles to flow into the poles.

The K index soared to a high of seven on the 28th, bringing a brief HF enhancement before auroral conditions with suppressed maximum useable frequencies ensued. HF conditions were described as “abysmal” by one GB2RS reader – we thought you should know why!

Next week the solar flux index is predicted to remain around 70, although a new sunspot is heading around the eastern limb of the sun and has already been producing C-class solar flares.

A small solar coronal hole was also facing Earth on Wednesday. This may cause unsettled geomagnetic conditions around Friday the 2nd of June, and through this weekend. With National Field Day this weekend, this could potentially result in an elevated K index, noisy bands and subdued maximum usable frequencies. Otherwise, for field day we expect 20 metres to be the main daytime band, with occasional short-skip Sporadic-E openings on 7MHz to 28MHz. Forty metres may be good in the morning and evening, with 80 metres, and perhaps even 160m, coming alive at night.

We don’t expect much daytime F2 layer DX on 21MHz and higher, but do take a look.

The next week or so is dominated by a tendency for low pressure on the charts, mainly just to the northwest of Britain. This is expected to produce a showery south-westerly weather pattern, so good for rain scatter on the GHz bands, but it gives limited options for tropospheric openings. That leaves us to hope for some Sporadic-E propagation, especially for the 6m and HF CW NFD contests this weekend.

The good news is that we are firmly in the Sporadic-E season. Since one of the key weather contributors to Sporadic-E, jet streams, are likely to be present for much of the week, if we have low K index figures there should be some Sporadic-E to work on VHF bands from 10m through 6m and 4m, and perhaps even 2m. The jet streams are likely to be over the near continent during this contest weekend, albeit as a weak feature, but may offer a good direction for paths into Europe. There is also a slight bias towards Scandinavia and the Baltic. Later in the weekend a new Atlantic jet stream will reach Spain and may promote some Sporadic-E activity to Spain early next week, moving east to support paths to Italy and Balkans midweek onwards.

This is a poor week for moonbounce, with low moon declination in the northern hemisphere and high degradation, peaking Thursday and Friday. This may be a good time to check out your antenna and receiver systems on sun noise.

This week sees one of the summer low points in terms of meteor showers. There are no substantial showers forecast, with just the low count Northern June Aquilids due around the 10th June. But there are always random meteors to enhance those quiet days.

We are now in summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave propagation conditions.

This means generally poor HF radio wave propagation conditions in the northern hemisphere especially at day and generally good HF radio wave propagation conditions in the southern hemisphere especially at day.

Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced

during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during

the summer and winter solstices.

Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the

sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the

ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the

maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer

critical frequency (FoF2).

Global Daily HF Radio Wave Propagation Forecast-

The HF radio wave propagation conditions are improving.

HAMATEUR & SW BROADCAST HF BANDS-

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE RADIO WAVE PROPAGATION-

80-60 (75-60) meters- poor to fair at night and very poor at day,

This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is based on the W4HM_Cap HF radio wave propagation prediction software.

The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts and ½ wave dipole up at 40 feet.

The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on 100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical VOA type curtain array antenna.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave

propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable by the average radio enthusiast.

Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm

static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and

mostly bad.

Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio

wave propagation conditions in a negative manner.

Solar, Space & Geomagnetic Weather Conditions On

Thursday June 1, 2017-

Solar activity was low.

Earth's geomagnetic field was at a quiet level.

The three daily solar flux index (SFI) numbers were 76.2 75.7 81.8.

The official daily sunspot number (SSN) was 18.

In 2017 officially there were 38 days with a daily sunspot number (SSN) of

0.

Considering that solar minimum won't occur for approximately 2 more years,

+/- 1 year, daily SSN's of 0 are occurring now unusually early.

In 2016 officially there were 32 days with a daily sunspot number (SSN) of

0. Considering that solar minimum won't occur for approximately three more

years, seeing daily SSN's of 0 occurring now is unusually early.

As we move forward towards the next solar minimum between solar cycle #24

and #25 the number of days with a 0 daily SSN will steadily increase.

Eventually every day for many, many, many months will see a 0, the big goose

egg.

In 2008 I forecasted solar cycle 24 to be the weakest in the past 100 years

and that forecast verified. I also forecasted that solar cycle 25 would be

virtually nonexistent, similar to the Dalton type solar minimum that

occurred in the early 1800's. Other than sunspot magnetic polarity it will probably be very difficult to determine when solar cycle 24 ended and solar cycle 25 began.

There was 1 newly risen and/or emerged official sunspot group.

Sunspot group #12661 was located near N05E69 with a magnetically complex beta-gamma magnetic signature. It has the potential to produce medium size M class solar flares.

There was 1 unofficial and as of yet unnumbered earth facing sunspot group located near

N12W11.

There was 9 earth facing C class or larger solar flares the largest being an

C6.6.

No day side high latitude solar fade outs (SFO) (also called polar cap absorption) occurred.

No earth facing coronal mass ejections (CME) occurred.

No earth facing collapsing magnetic filament eruptions occurred.

The twenty four hour period 3 hour interval planetary K index (Kp) was at unsettled to quiet geomagnetic conditions of

0 1 1 0 1 3 2 3.

The Kp geomagnetic indices are-

0-2- quiet

3- unsettled

4- active

5- minor geomagnetic storming

6- moderate

7- strong

8- severe

9- extreme

10- our atmosphere just got cooked off like on Mars and we are all dead.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum planetary A index (Ap) ranged between

12 and 2,

which was at unsettled to quiet geomagnetic conditions.

The Ap geomagnetic indices are-

0-7- quiet

8-15 unsettled

16-29- active

30-49- minor geomagnetic storm

50-99- major

100-400- severe

>401- our atmosphere just got cooked off like on Mars and we are all dead.

The 24 hour period averaged energetic proton flux was at a background level below 10 MeV.

The 24 hour period averaged background x-ray flux was at C3.03.

The 24 hour period averaged vertical component (Bz) of earth's geomagnetic magnetic field was at

-1 nT South.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum disturbance storm time index (Dst) ranged between

-3 and +33 nT.

The 24 hour period maximum and minimum solar wind speed ranged between

442 and 291 km/s.

There was 1 newly risen and/or emerged earth facing trans equatorial (CH) coronal hole, #806. It will set around the west limb of the sun in approximately 2 days.

GENERAL GUIDELINES CONCERNING CORRELATION OF PROPAGATION INDICES TO ACTUAL HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS-

NOTE!!! The propagation indices "interpretations" are my personal

All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to

see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible,

something that happens rarely.

1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best.

2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best.

3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation

of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism.

4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days

consecutively are best.

5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer

than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best.

6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0).

7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days

consecutively, greater than C1 best.

8.) No current STRATWARM alert.

9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign,

indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora

absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF

signals, when the Kp is above 3.

10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery

time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A

positive number is best.

11.) Rising positive T index number. The T Index tracks with the F2 layer

critical frequency (foF2) and sunspot number (SSN) and indicates the

capability of the F2 layer to refract RF signals.

12.) Galactic cosmic rays decrease to -3 units below zero and trending

towards zero.

13.) Energetic electron flux levels no greater
