Glenn Hauser logs January 5-6, 2013

** CUBA. 6165, Jan 6 at 0609, RHC English is instead open carrier/dead air in yet another SNAFU. Along with 6010 and 5040, this is its strongest frequency here; those and weaker // 6060, 6125, were unaffected.

At 0626 on 6165, guess what, digital noises, interrupted by Spanish spy numbers! YL with one 5-digit group only, ``45411``, then back to noises, further interrupted by other single groups past 0635. Is this its new format or may we somewhen else still hear long strings of groups on AM or cut CW?

This makes it painfully obvious that RHC is an integral part of the Dirección General de Inteligencia, sharing transmitters, so it`s easy to get RHC on spy frequencies or vice versa. (Easy, that is, if you are run by incompetents.) Not the first time it`s happened, by far, but the most blatant in recent memory.

Not exactly an exchange --- spy numbers normally appear on some frequencies between 5.8 and 5.9 MHz, but none at this time, nor any RHC to be heard on former spy frequencies.

9511 approx., Jan 6 at 1413, weak spurblob around here, presumably from also weak RHC 9540, as frequently happens.

15340, Jan 6 at 1425, RHC is dead-air on huge carrier, as most likely to happen on Sundays in reverent respect for the missing El Hugazo; shux, no spy numbers instead here. Still DA at 1520, and by now 13780 is completely off the air.

17580, one of the still funxioning frequencies, meanwhile, I monitored at 1435-1450 Sunday Jan 6, for the first `En Contacto` of 2013y. After listener birthday salutes for the week to come, as usual every year, repeated last week`s salutes to the 129 ``most active listeners`` of the past year. I assume this means everyone who axually wrote directly to the program. They are in 12 groups, starting with one listener from Nicaragua, to first place again, 23 from --- CUBA!

Makes you wonder if the show is also carried on domestic radio, but I don`t think so. Dentrocubanos feel comfortable writing to this one safe shortwave station, and also save on postage costs needed for meagre rations. Except for Spain, all names were from the Americas, almost all Latin, including a few from EE UU y Canadá. Brazilian name pronunciations were forced into Spanish, even José. AFAIK, RHC has no DX program in Portuguese, so they have to listen to Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 7475, Jan 6 at 0613, Orthodox chanting/singing; it`s Epiphany = Greek Orthodox Xmas, and the sound is a bit more formal than usual on other Sundays, otherwise unremarkable. So Radio Philia has again been banished from 7475, instead // mainstream VOG much weaker 9420 tonight, but 7475 dumps off the air at 0622*-*0625; when back, it`s also subnormal with some flutter following propagation disturbance (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUAM. 15260, UT Saturday Jan 5 at 2201, nice SE Asian music, involving gamelan, fair-good sufficient signal; 2206 announcement sounds almost Indonesian with keyword ``siaran``, IDs something like ``Radio Athrem Dewara`` plus two more words; back to vocal music. By 2215 talk mentions ``Christus``, a dead giveaway it`s a missionary station.

HFCC and Aoki agree it`s KSDA, 255 degrees from Agat, alternating Javanese on Sun/Tue/Thu, with Sundanese on Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat, so this must have been the latter; but what is the true wording of the ID? AWR website is no help; has lots of listening options, such as
http://www.awr.org/fr/listen/program/124
but nothing in print about the axual ID! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 11670, Sat Jan 5 at 2143, AIR GOS good but with flutter, concluding talk about the Nicobar Islands I wish I had heard, introducing Film Music. Faded that out at 2200 with no announcements about what the music was, but always enjoyable: they must view it as just a filler. Meanwhile checked //s: about as good on 9445, but not so good on 11620 and 7550. Which ones are best varies a lot from day to day as we in North America must struggle to hear AIR via the only means possible, virtually trans-polar off-beams, never any relays abroad.

[and non]. 13710, Jan 6 at 1421, AIR GOS in poor signal about Nepal, with CODAR QRM up to 13730, that having invaded the 22m SWBC band even further above 13.6 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 11880, Jan 5 at 2142, I can still hear music under RHC Portuguese, no doubt NHK also Portuguese via GUIANA FRENCH, so it still hasn`t changed to 11960, as Ivo Ivanov says they are going to. Hurry up! Such a change should have been made immediately as soon as RHC usurped the frequency, as you can`t negotiate with Arnie Coro, who never admits he`s made a mistake. 11960 remains unoccupied (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1580, Jan 5 at 2155 UT, again today, KOKB Blackwell is in open carrier/dead air, while sibling station 1020 KOKP Perry is nominal. Evidently the 1580 relay is unattended (and unmonitored!), so once it craps out, it takes a lot of time for them to send someone out to fix it; who cares? Stupid sports talk, when managing to modulate (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 21505, Jan 6 at 1433, BSKSA in Arabic marred by humbuzz, so at least one of their transmitters is still defective, but nowhere as bad as it once was, on 15435 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TAIWAN [non]. 15440, Jan 5 at 2214, RTI`s only English to NAm, via WYFR is back today after providing dead air yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. Re my yesterday`s 15710 log, Kai Ludwig replies to the dxldyg:

``BBC WS to Europe in Dari and Pashto --- This is the service that has been broadcast for quite some time, almost a decade I think, from Skelton on 6195, as I reported time and again, reconfirming that it's still on air. Besides Dari and Pashto it also contained a third hour, in Farsi.

So now moved to Zygi, together with the necessary frequency change, and with the Farsi hour being terminated. Which also means that the (still mostly failing?) CyBC transmission is during its last months not the only thing the Zygi site beams to Europe.

I have never seen any explanations for this service and its target audience. So I take this as another opportunity to ask if someone knows an insider who could comment on this, also the aspect that this weird service no longer offers Farsi but still Dari and Pashto? Kai``

I didn`t mention or monitor it, but HFCC shows 15710 now has something else following at 1600 and really beamed in the proper direxion:

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1650 monitoring: UT Sunday 0500 on WTWW-1 5830: at first thought it was off the air, but monitoring outside with least noise level, I`m there, but quite weak. Yet, WTWW-2 on 5085 is inbooming. The MUF has a sharp cutoff between 5.1 and 5.8 MHz! Other Tennesseeans (I refuse to call them Vols), WWCR 5890 and 5935 are just as attenuated. I hope anyway, the `skip is long`, with 5830 still getting out further away: how was it on the west coast of North America, or Europe? Yet2, at 0608 recheck, 5830, along with 5890 and 5935 are back to usual very good level. Must have been hit by a propagation disturbance an hour earlier, then recovered. Such luck.

Remaining chances to hear WOR 1650 this week are via WRMI 9955: Mon 0530, Tue 1200, probably Thu 0430. Unknown yet whether HLR will make another Wednesday appearance, 7265-USB at 0630 & 1630 like the last biweek (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9370, Sunday Jan 6 at 1415, no signal from WWRB, and not audible on night frequency 3185 either, which if still on is buried in daytime noise level. I want my Brother Scare! 1527 check, now 9370 is on but with defunct Alex Scourby`s pseudo-authoritative Bible readings as provided by TOM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12105, Sunday Jan 6 at 1522, WTWW-3 is on today in Arabic, probably bad news again for R. Dialogue, clandestine from Madagascar to Zimbabwe on same at 16-17, but unchecked here then (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 17550, Jan 5 at 1401, Arabic with good signal, but somewhat distorted modulation, typical of IRIB, yes, 1030-1630, 500 kW, 259 degrees via Kamalabad. IRIB modulation doesn`t get as bad as Cairo`s (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 7595, Jan 5 at 1350, fair signal with Korean talk, no jamming audible, despite being per Aoki:

** MEXICO. 2910, Jan 5 I wake up by 1213 UT, so remonitor this unID frequency during what has proven to be its peak signal time, which isn`t saying much, but today it`s better than yesterday, especially during occasional surges. But about the only details I can copy in the rapid Spanish discussion between M&W announcers are the timechex he frequently gives, starting with 6:13, and at 1224 UT, 6:24. Bits of music are sometimes audible as part of commercial or news produxion, never a full song. At 1225 mentions Féisbuc. From 1227 added to the high local line noise level, some additional local noise bursts come and go. 1228 strongest yet with 6:28 time, phone number; 1233 fading down; 1242, fade up with YL`s monolog; lite SSB ACI; 1247 maybe mentions XEVT in passing; 1249 fading.

Since I don`t expect it to come back, I hasten to fire up the computer and look for its webstream. I don`t like to resort to this, but instead make my IDs in real time on my own radio, but enough is enough. DXing does not mix with online here, as the computer and shack are in different rooms, yet not far enough apart to keep computer noise from disrupting DXing whenever it`s on.

Of course I already am fairly certain it is XEVT. Via the Tabasco page of
http://www.mexicoradio.tv com under Villahermosa, I get an instant link to the XEVT stream, via http://www.xevt.com and there they are --- the same voices, same format, I have been struggling to hear on 2910 (but apparently no mention of that frequency! Just 970 and // FM XHVT 104.1).

From easy listening now and info on the website, the program is `Buenos Días Telereportaje` at 6-7 am, and extends further until 10 am at least on Saturdays. Now I hear local announcements about street work, meetings, greetings, mentions of Tabasco; 1259 canned ID for ``las frecuencias de la VT, 970 y 104.1``, ``La VT, señal que une``; 1300 singing ad for a plomería; 1302 re-opening another hour of Telereportaje; 1306 news headline mentions Ciudad Juárez, but no XEJ here! 1309 finally a tropical song is allowed to play.

They have a nice interactive website, and even video streaming, but before I even try it, that says ``server not found``.

with linx to other days. Show sign-on at 5 am, off at 23:59, i.e. just before 0600 UT. The first hour after sign-on I heard is:

And the next hour I have been hearing is:

But those are both male names, so I think the YL co-host after 1300 must axually be funxioning an hour earlier:

Except reading the pages about Telereportaje`s 30-year family history, Emmanuel is also a guy, so I still don`t know who the YL is. Hmmm, unless ``she`` is a varonkid whose voice hasn`t changed yet? There are also multiple pages and photos on the history of XEVT itself, since 1954.

So far I haven`t seen reports of anyone else DXing this, but if anyone does, I urge them NOT to try to QSL or even contact XEVT about their third harmonic on 2910, as that will only encourage them to get rid of it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 960, Jan 5 at 0600-0605 UT, NO Fox-hole, as local KGWA Enid continues to modulate, also the last few nites. I fear my fun is over, but not before I snagged CFAC, XEK, XEFAMA, KMA, probably KNEB, et al. during KGWA dead air (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. More about 1640 Enid, now known as KOAG:

``Hi Glenn, Your ag station network originates from KFLP 900 in Floydada TX; we used to carry a morning farm report from them in Roswell [KCKN 1020]. That certainly is a niche format. I`m sure farmers & ranchers would like maybe an hour a day of the latest ag news and market reports, as already provided on a number of rural stations, notably KFRM 550 which has tremendous daytime coverage in KS & OK, but 24/7???? And how much original material can KFLP really produce, before repeating stuff? I won`t be listening enough to find out, but there must be a lot of repetition (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 91.7, KOSU, Fri Jan 4 at 2244 UT, checking for `This Week in Oklahoma Politix` cutaway from NPR ATC, as promoted earlier in the day --- not there, just kept going with NPR feed. Possibly I misunderstood day and/or time it was supposed to air, and the KOSU website`s incomplete schedule is no help; heard it already anyway on demand, so who cares about the broadcasts? ** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3385, Jan 4 at 1318 fairly good carrier, but can`t hear any modulation, none sent? Weaker ones on PNG channels: 3365, and 3325, the latter just as likely INDONESIA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. 12075, Jan 5 at 1356, balalaika music and talk in English, poor, insufficient signal, but must be one of the surviving transmissions of VOR, i.e. 12-15, 500 kW, 155 degrees from TAJIKISTAN to S Asia. VOR is harder to hear now than even BBC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 17595 & 21610, Sat Jan 5 at 1605, REE news in Castilian followed by sea-chanty theme of Galician segment, then ``o informativo gallego`. By 1615 I notice it`s back in plain old Castilian, but talking about Bilbao, Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos, etc.; when last heard a few months ago at old timing of weekdays 1230+ UT, Castilian was substituting for Basque, apparently considered by Madrid as too dangerous a language to trust the Bilbaoans to broadcast on SW, and surely not understood by non-Basques in Madrid or anywhere else.

Then from 1623 songs in Spanish until 1630 timesignal and starting another show, `Heliotropo`. If there was any Catalan between them, which used to be one of the Big Three, I missed it. Catalan is also problematic with the separatist movement. Never mind Valencian, similar to Catalan.

So this is at least one time that REE is condescending to provide a few minutes in ``co-official languages``. I made a point of checking this following David Williams, Sacramento log of last Saturday during this semihour of the same lineup, Galician and Spanish about Basque country instead of Basque language. Vague info earlier from REE was that the non-Castilian languages would now be getting a weekly airing instead of M-F.

So is this on the REE schedule now, and are there any other airings? Not on this grid

which has obviously not been updated since the major shakeup a sesquimonth ago and in fact still shows a summer 2-hour difference between TU and HOE!

Checking the RTVE website at 1800, I see that the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos, a very colorful nighttime parade, is in live video streaming from TVE since 1748 UT, and still an hour later, but from Madrid, not Bilbao. Is there another one in Basque country? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 15710, Jan 5 at 1359, good signal from B-B-C- chimes, opening in Farsi? No, must be Dari as kept mentioning Afghanistan. Yes, scheduled 14-15 Dari, 15-16 Pashto, 300 kW, 317 degrees from doomed Limassol, CYPRUS, per Aoki, which would explain the good signal way over here, but that azimuth can`t be right.

What does HFCC say? 317 degrees too! And the CIRAFs as 27 and 28 which are western Europe! So is BBC deliberately aiming these languages at Afghans back in Europe instead of Afghanistan? That seems a rather specialized minority audience to benefit from BBC SW coverage, denied to so many of the rest of us even in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

It`s strange KTOK 1000 OKC hasn`t tried for more than 5 kW; maybe too close to Chicago, but 50 kW WMVP is not a factor here with huge cardioid to the east. Axually, KTOK has a CP for 5.8 kW, big deal. With much more power, it could have filled the mid-America gap among Chicago, Seattle and México DF (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN. 7250, Sat Jan 5 at 0604, VR is already on in Scandinavian, only poor signal tonite, and nothing yet on 3975, 6075 or 9645, which all join in at 0630 for Latin mass. My guess is Swedish rather than a related language, but WRTH 2013 shows totally different Finnish on Sat & Mon, other days Swedish, and since latest cutbax, both supposed to be on MW 1260 only at 0600-0620. Recheck at 0620, it`s changed to Albanian, scheduled daily on 1260 only.

Several previous nites, 7250 was not on much before 0630, but as per my earlier reports has occasionally come on by 0615 or so. Hard to know if this is slipshod warming up or something deliberate to return Nordic and Illyrian languages to SW, perhaps without the Pope`s permission. And what became of Norwegian, or even Danish? In 1980, Sweden was 1.4% Catholic, probably even less now, so lucky that VR pays any attention at all (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

An International Space Station school contact has been planned January
7, 2013 with participants at Ecole Les Muriers, Saint-Maur-Des-Fossés,
France. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:57 UTC,
which is 11.57 CEWT.

Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. Adrien(10) and Augustin(10): What is the temperature outside the ISS?
2. Bastien (10) and Camille (11): What does the Earth look like from the ISS?
3. Diana (10) and Ester Rose (10): What does the Moon look like from the ISS?

ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers onboard the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology and learning.

** AUSTRALIA. 5995, Jan 4 at 1453, Elgar`s ``Enigma Variations``, great classical music playing on RA, unusual for them, but most welcome! Until: faded out incomplete at 1459 for RA promo and then news, also on // 11945, while 9580 was already off at 1458, even more rudely. I suppose RA considered it merely fill music for some program missing on summer hiatus. ** BOLIVIA. 6134.8, Jan 4 at 0950 I am unavoidably awake, so check 60 and 49m for the morning LA window. Noise level is such that the only signal making it is this, lively song in Spanish, no het, mentions ``Los Coyotes del Norte``, a musical group, or anti-American remark? Next tune is Andean, and then another segué. No doubt R. Santa Cruz, which is one station we don`t have to lose sleep to hear in the evenings (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 9695.3, Jan 4 at 1011, ``Aleluya`` song but a new tune to me, Brazilian Portuguese preaching, het, poor signal, no doubt R. Rio Mar, ZYE245, Manaus, 7.5 kW, which per WRTH signs on at 1000 and off at 2100, accounting for nothing from it in the evenings; why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. Having just entered 9810 and 6120 in updated DX/SWL/Media Programs listing, as possible frequencies for RHC English during the 0500 hour, since several times has been so instead of scheduled Spanish, I check 9810 at 0545 Jan 4, just in time to hear undermodulation from that annoying-voiced YL in English switch to OM in Spanish. I`m sure she keeps RHC`s ratings down even further beyond the unwanted propaganda and monomania about Los Cinco (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5025, Jan 4 at 1022, R. Rebelde `Haciendo Radio` morning show with report from a Venezuelan official about Chávez` condition, pulmonary problems, and warning against evil foreign powers pushing destablization of the Bolivarian Revolution (what would Simón say?) because of uncertainty about the health of El Hugazo. Strangely, no audio breakup or RTTY QRM at the moment (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** DJIBOUTI. 4780, Jan 4 at 0339, fair signal with Horn of Africa music, occasionally overridden by ``running-water`` ute bursts. RTD with 50 kW per WRTH. Otherwise, about the same signal as 4930 VOA Botswana with 100 kW. This exotic spot is a relatively easy catch on 60m, always neat to hear. Not in HFCC, of course, and I wonder if that`s why Voice of Russia chose 4780 too in their evenings. They should have known it was there by 1) keeping up with DX bulletins; or 2) turning on a radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 6170, Jan 4 at 1048, operatic quality baritone with song about My Fatherland, and good signal; O yeah, it`s a recent new frequency from V. of Korear, as 1050 into talk about relations between Korea and Japan.

RNZI better watch out, if they expect to go back to 6170 in the A-13 season, as VOK is likely to stay and of course is not registered in HFCC. For now, RNZI is on 9765 during this hour; see NEW ZEALAND. Aoki shows VOK usage of 6170 is 1000-2050 since November 22 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 9765, Jan 4 at 1015, ``live`` rock concert with VG signal, from what? An unfamiliar usually sound-asleep daypart for me, but quickly found in the BDXC-UK Broadcasts in English B-12 booklet as RNZI. See also KOREA NORTH (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

His counterpoise was Republican Neva Hill, who was scheduled exactly 24 hours earlier, on Thursdays.

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1650 monitoring: confirmed first SW broadcast Thursday January 3 at 2200 on WTWW-1 9479. This time it and the canned ID started about the same time at hourtop, the ID overriding WOR audio until it was finished. I am so far resisting the temptation to re-open WOR *after* the theme with my name and program number. Repeat is UT Sunday 0500 on 5830.

Also confirmed on WWRB, both 3195 and better 5050 on the air this week, UT Friday January 4 from 0432 or so; after dead air, WOR opening at 0431 was heard only in a few bursts, bad connexion, but patchcord wiggled and picked up at 0432 during first item about Angola. May have started over? As ended at 0502 when 5050 abruptly cut off the air as soon as I said ``next week``.

Instead of Pastor Larry ``Amen & Amen`` Cain from Anderson, South Carolina before WOR, from tune-in at 0419 until 0430, a nice primitive organ concert was playing apparent hymns altho I did not recognize them. Is Cain gone for good, or music filling for him in another playback problem?

Next check 0402, DW news again, ending with reference to their website! 0404 gospel huxter expecting the Last Days to be in 2026y; 0406 rock music. Apparently WRNO is using DW for newscasts only rather than full programs? Guess what, this is a daytimer per NRC AM Log, 2.5 kW in New Boston TX, which is in the far NE corner just outside Texarkana. And it`s more than 3 hours before January FCC sunrise at 1315 UT! It does have a PSRA of 6 watts in January, but that doesn`t start until 6 am = 1200 UT! Also in the FCC Correspondence File is a $1500 forfeiture by the previous licensee for failing to renew on time. Now how about a fine for running daytime at night?

UNIDENTIFIED. 2910, Jan 4 at 1053 UT, S9+12 open carrier ought to prove fruitful as the presumed third harmonic of 970 I have been hearing is about to sign on. Short version of Mexican NA plays at 1059, removing any doubt about the country, and explaining why they don`t play it again at 1200. But just not enough audio vs the noise level; seems this XE is undermodulating on its harmonic if not on its fundamental.

I listen for about 10 minutes, but can just barely tell a broadcaster is there with some talk and some music; also some additional noise sources cut on and off. For the first time I roll tape on this so I can go back to sleep and maybe pull some details out on playback. Don`t dare leave BFO on due to possible drift, but that means I can instead employ the FRG-7 noise limiter which helps very little. We have a new neighbor who has been refurbishing a vacant house, now with the power on, cable connected, and more RFI surely to follow.

I`ve been listening to the C-90 as I write this report, and it`s not a good morning for XEVT(?). Very slight improvement in S/N around 1200 but really not a single word copiable. Surges a bit more around 1215, maybe with approach of local sunrise? LSR is 1244 UT today in Villahermosa, Tabasco, exactly one hour earlier than Enid. Still in when the tape ends circa 1235. There has been absolutely nothing useful on it, so I can record over it another time.

Someone should be able to get a definite ID at the 1100 sign-on if not later, when they are much more concerned about telling us the time rather than the ID, altho there are plenty of other ways to find out the time. Still not hearing it around my 0600 UT chex, so probably signs off earlier, nor earlier in evenings when my local noise level is probably even higher (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRALIA. 6007 & 6033, approx., distorted FMy spurblobs matching modulation on the RA Shepparton 6020 transmitter halfway between, Jan 2 at 1320. I was expecting this since the same transmitter is on 5995 after 1400 and sporadically spurblobbing 13 kHz above and below it. Jan 3 at 1348 check: no blobs around 6020 today. Not to be confused with the Cuban or N Korean jamming noises in this area, which are quite different (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BOLIVIA. 6134.815 approx., Jan 3 at 0610, BBC French via Ascension has het on low side, slightly wavering around F#3 below middle C4, i.e. 185 Hz. This smax of the het R. Santa Cruz causes earlier in the evenings, against the now defunct V. of Russia Spanish service via St. Petersburg, on 6135.0 at 00-03. Ron Howard heard RSC New Year`s Eve way later than usual sign off as late as 0417 Jan 1 on 6134.76, and I suspect they again have left the transmitter on, but even later. BBC French is quite a bit stronger, mostly talk, and all I can make out is some music on the het frequency, but BBC off at 0629. There is still a het against something much weaker on 6135.0. At 0630 the announcement sounds Spanish; slop de much stronger Cuba 6125; then some tropical music, lyrix maybe in Spanish. 0640 the music stops, but still het so the carrier isn`t off yet; presumed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CROATIA [non]. 7375, Jan 2 around 0210, V. of Croatia relay via Nauen, GERMANY, is still on, despite ``Jan 1`` termination of SW; but around 0050 UT Jan 3 it`s gone, forever. Walter Brodowsky of M&B replied Jan 2 to an inquiry from Rich D`Angelo, NASWA: ``The transmission is cancelled since today. This is something syndicated by Paramount Broadcasting Corporation. No affiliate list as such on the website, but the Listen Live page says: ``Listen to All Ag, All Day! live across the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandles at 800AM (KDDD) Dumas-Amarillo; and across the Texas South Plains at 900AM (KFLP) Floydada-Lubbock.`` So it looks like KOAG is only the third station, they have not got around to adding on.

Further listening finds KOAG with IRN-USA news on the hour and half-hour (the latter with sports segment). At 1432 the news feed was suffering from IADs, digifarts and some hum. Legal ID still includes Enid-Oklahoma City. Plenty of market reports too.

This replaces KFXY, which lastly had a southern gospel music format, always subject to pre-emption for stupid ballgames, as I expect KOAG will be too. All this talk should mean less ACI for DX on 1630 and 1650. Maybe I`ll finally hear XEARZ.

Tnx to David Yocis of NRC who spotted the call change at FCC before I did on the local radio. Note that unlike most X-banders, this one is direxional with a figure-8 loop from east of Hennessey, between OKC and Enid so it favors both cities, but nulls toward the ENE and WSW, making it difficult in those direxions. Now they might wish to be non-direxional, better to cover ``all-ag`` areas in western Oklahoma rather than urbanity. And why not? It was a choice; they were not required to be direxional to protect anything, in fact making it worse for WTNI in Mississippi at night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Verso le 07.09, su 9955 kHz, sopra a WRN via WRMI si è sentito il Firedrake (il famoso jamming di musica cinese) e, dopo 2 minuti circa, sparito il Firedrake è comparso il jamming cubano. L'impressione avuta è che il Firedrake venisse ripetuto dal trasmettitore cubano *per errore* (!?) e che poi, rendendosene conto, abbiano commutato di nuovo (manualmente?) sul jamming cubano destinato a WRMI. Sarebbe anche vero che d'inverno, sempre presso il mio QTH ma credo in generale in Europa, in mattinata sui 31 metri transitano anche segnali asiatici, però il fade-in dalla Cina popolare inizia di solito verso le 10.00 UTC. Immaginando una certa 'vicinanza culturale' tra Cina e Cuba, sarebbe possibile l'ipotesi che, in caso di necessità (propagazione, orari, target, problemi tecnici ecc.) il Firedrake venga irradiato non solo dal territorio cinese?

** OKLAHOMA. 930, Jan 1 at 1356 UT, WKY with two ads in English, so does the New Year bring abandonment of Spanish? No! English ads are welcome, if anyone wants to buy them and not bother to reproduce them in Spanish. Followed by ad for the new MundoFox TV network (in Spanish), now available in OKC, if you ask your cable or satellite provider. Big deal, that could be said of anywhere, but does this mean MundoFox is not on-the-air in OKC? It is in Enid! As second subchannel of KXOK 31 & 32. Axually, MundoFox started in August on KOHC-CD 45.1 in OKC and presumably still is, not worth mentioning in its promotion. Angle is that this Spanish network is ``American, like you!``

At 1358, WKY brings up vamping music, and funny voice again saying ``Atención, cadena, el show [¿nombre?] de la música regresa en 2 minutos`` = the show will return in 2 minutos; 1 minuto; 45 segundos; 30; 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, ``La Indomable`` slogan and full ID in Spanish for WKY, but the letters pronounced in accented English. WKY keeps putting on the air this internal network countdown, not intended for broadcast. Must have run out of commercials to cover it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1170, Jan 1 at 1404 UT, KFAQ Tulsa is quite weaker than normal. Must be on aux transmitter, as they have had problems with 50 kW main (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. 7290, Jan 1 at 0159, V of Russia with frequency announcement in English, including MW, and also web info. Poor signal here and nothing heard on 7250 any more. According to the updated English schedule

broadcasts to North America have been terminated! The end of an era. And remaining English reduced. This is a result of the closure of some transmitter sites in a large budget cut.

However, 7290 was already designated for Latin America rather than North America, and we can continue to hear that, altho it would seem English is more of a North American language, but hey, Guyana, Trinidad and the other islands are more of a priority than we are!

7290 has been on a 296 degree beam with 500 kW from PRIDNESTROVYE, while 9395, not previously in English, is registered as 500 kW, 305 degrees from ARMENIA, neither for any CIRAF less than 10 = Mexico.

** U K [non]. 9740 & 6195, Jan 1 at 1346, BBCWS is still here, altho poor on 9740, less than Taiwan 9735, and very poor on 6195. 1350 into a ``special edition`` of `From Our Own Correspondent`. Despite DX Re Mix News, Bulgaria info that these would be canceled as of Jan 1. Alan Davies explains to the DXLD yg,

``I'd assume the reported closure of the Singapore frequencies was based on HFCC registrations updated on the HFCC website on 27 Dec. There were temporary registrations with HFCC for 6195 and 9740 extended until 1630 for the period 24-31 Dec rather than the usual 1600 closedown, most likely to accommodate special Christmas/New Year programming. So perhaps not a closure from 1 Jan, but rather a return to the normal schedule closing at 1600 daily. Probably something similar would apply to at least some of the other frequencies mentioned in the report. Summary of SW, MW cuts from 1 January

A summary of various SW and MW transmitter closures which are are mostly due to take effect from 1 January. This is summarised from reports which will be in January Communication (DX News and Medium Wave Report):

Croatia
Voice of Croatia is dropping SW, but continuing on MW 1134 kHz

Germany
Voice of Russia is dropping MW relays on 630 (Königslutter/Schepau), 1323 (Wachenbrunn), and 1431 (Dresden Wilsdruff). Only remaining German relay freq is 693 kHz (Berlin Zehlendorf)

Hungary
MR6 Régió Rádió closed on 22 December. A new station Radio Danko is using former MR6 frequencies of 1116, 1251, 1350 kHz with Hungarian and gipsy folk music and rural news (similar to Antena Satelor in Romania).

Norway
NRK Rost 675 kHz is closing - a planned closure announced some time ago.

Russia
-St Petersburg SW/MW site is closing (including MW 1494 kHz)
-Samara SW site is also reported to be closing.
-Mayak is closing on MW/LW throughout Russia
-Voice of Russia is reducing some of its SW/MW output across its language services following budget cuts.

St Helena
Radio St Helena (MW 1548 kHz) closed on Christmas Day.
It will be replaced by St Helena Broadcasting Corp on FM only.

Zambia
CVC 1Africa is dropping SW. (Had been scheduled on 13590 at 0600-2200 but 13590 has not been heard for several days, I suspect it has already
been switched off)

The above is fairly grim news for short wave, though on the positive side there have been a couple of stations reactivating on SW recently - Radio Uganda on 4976 kHz and Bangladesh reactivated with a new SW transmitter earlier this year.

HFCC shows MBR Nauen replaced MBR Wertachtal on Nov 24, both 100 kW, 90 degrees, Mon-Sat at 1415-1430. But that`s merely the transmitter site. What broker is this, really? ** GERMANY. 9800, Dec 31 at 1458, mix of DW IS, and VOA Korean. Such overlap should have been avoided: VOA 12-15 via PHLIPPPINES, DW 1500 [sic]-1557 Swahili via RWANDA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST

** INDIA. 7550, Dec 31 at 2133 tune-in, AIR GOS better here than // 9445, and not audible on 11 MHz, as mailbag `Faithfully Yours` is about to wrap up its 2120-2135 Monday broadcast, shux --- no, it isn`t, keeps on going until 2144, so is it expanded, off-schedule, or retimed? M&W take their time reading each reception report and replying, usually adding more scheduled times & frequencies for AIR that might be heard in writer`s area; also pointed out frequencies which changed on Oct 28 vis-à-vis some mentioned in old A-12 reports. At 2134-2139, they read a complete report, including all his program details, from Bruce Portzer, Seattle, for 7550, sometime in November, which he said was weak but in the clear until 2230*. They concluded by asserting his report was ``of immense value`` to AIR and its listeners. Followed by two more, from Netherlands, and Japan, until sign-off with unison ``Faithfully Yours,`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN. Not expecting to find much from NHK at midnight in Japan, since the demise of Sackville, and having been disappointed with their NYE coverage previous years, I try R. Nikkei instead, 9595, with a poor signal today, but at this late hour better than // 6055. Dec 31 at 1459 Japanese talk, countdown from 5 to 0 at 1500 UT, ``Sakura`` played on shakuhachi, and then some other songs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 11880, Dec 30 at 2131 check, something is barely detectable under RHC Portuguese. NHK Portuguese relay via GUIANA FRENCH must still be here. While RHC frequency mismanager Arnie Coro  is totally to blame for this usurpation, now NHK is also to blame for doing nothing about it for a sesquimonth. Well, there`s always A-13, when some random change may be in store to incidentally solve this in another trimonth.

Confirmed definitely NHK IS starting at 2129 Dec 31, way under RHC Cuban music and IS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 700, Dec 31 at 1314 UT only signal is weak Spanish, 6:15 TC, i.e. UT -7. Sounds like this strangely-named one I have heard before, per Cantú, alluding to another town, Etchojoa:

which is an indigenous station with native languages, IRCA reminds us. The rustic fiddle and guitar tune I also heard fits too.

In summer the UT -7 would clinch it, but in winter, also on UT -7 instead of UT -6 is a bigger-city possibility I doubt:

** MEXICO. 750, Dec 31 at 1310 UT, noticias del estado de Sinaloa, mentioned more than once, political discussion, CCI; federal PSA vs drunk driving at fin del año; then announcement in English about New Year`s, Digital FM; then 89.5 pronounced in Spanish. What does Cantú say? It all fits for this one:

** MEXICO. Best sporadic E opening so far this winter, UT Dec 31 in progress at tune-in, all times UT, channels A-system NTSC analog:

0054 on 3, upper-right bug with Televisa horizontal oval logo, the word TELEVISA below it, and another word below that in tiny type, from the WSW, so suspect it is MEXICALI, i.e. XHBC. Some guy is speaking English with captions, apparently a soul singer as in the next few minutes. Also algo much weaker on 2.

0059 on 5, algo: Mexicali also has XHAQ which accompanies XHBC-3 if MUF coöperate. More on it to follow

0152 on 3, now in strong, still Televisa bug, chat show with six women on a couch, apparently about beauty and fashion in 2012y. Some almost zero-beat CCI, heavy bars typical of XHTJB Tijuana which is far too close to be on the same offset as Mexicali, and seldom surpasses XHBC here, which is at a closer almost-ideal skip distance. Show keeps going past 0200, now seeing five women. 0217 is snow free and I can barely make out MEXICALI as the tiny word at the bottom of the bug. Sometimes it`s invisible depending on the contrast behind it. Heavy ghosting now

0217 on 5, algo, presumed XHAQ Mexicali now that XHBC is in stronger; also on 2, algo CCI but weaker. There is a 2 in BCN also seen last summer

0223 on 3, ad for a cohetería --- I`m not sure what this is; a rocket shop or a place for farting? Or old farts?; political ad for Nueva Alianza; ad for cellphone company YOO. There`s also a free ice rink

0226 on 3, now a sextet of women chatting as another one enters

0230 on 6, weak video briefly and I recognize the net-5 logo in an italic oval, this time larger and screen-center. So it`s XETV Tijuana, which since it added DTV on UHF, has kept analog 6 on air with Mexican instead of American programming. Was XHGC not on in Tijuana before?

0238 on 5, apparently novela, Azteca-13 bug partially visible in UR, so XHAQ Mexicali

0243 on 3, still in, but weaker; 0300 equestrian or rodeo, guy on a horse in an arena; probably XHBC switching to men`s show. Or corrida?

0312 on 2, weak CCI, still westerly rather than southerly

0344 on 2, still algo as opening is about to close

Another opening later the same UT day:

1658 on 2, algo with some Spanish music fades in

1701 on 2, ad for XL3VR, a cold-remedy tablet, not an exotic callsign

1703 on 5, algo as MUF rises

1704 on 2, news with large f bug in LR, i.e. net-4 Foro TV; smaller bug in UR appears to be same. Re low temps in Chihuahua, Coahuila, but I think this is a national cast. W9WI.com shows the only XHTV-4 relay on 2, of any power, is XEFE in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and the direxion fits, altho this may be misleading, as I also remember seeing it via XHY-TV in Mérida, Yucatán, which is listed merely as INDependent. And BTW he shows that XEFE also relays XHGC-5.

At 1711, this 2 is getting some 10-kHz offset CCI, but I have to go out at 1715 with the opening continuing. Anyhow, never heard anything on low end FM caradio, where most of the channels are blocked.

1948 next check, no DX on ch 2, but at 2148 there is some weak Es briefly (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, Dec 31 at 1939 UT, KEOR Mexican music is breaking up; hard to tell on caradio whether it`s the carrier or just the modulation. Seems like they turned this on weeks ago and then forgot it, never got around to programming in any IDs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA. 5930, Dec 31 at 1349 UT, R. Rossii, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is on late for NYE, usually off at 1300 sharp. Fair with Russian talk about China and its music. Maybe also on Magadan 5940, but hard to be sure under R. Australia which starts at 1300 expecting Magadan to go off then. 5930 at 1400, R. Rossii ID and continues, and still audible at 1457 with Russian chat, almost two hours late.

** SPAIN. 11680, Dec 31 at 2120, festive classical music, Portuguese announcement, more music, 2124 & 2126 Castilian REE IDs, amid more music.

9535 stronger than // 9620, Dec 31 at 2258 REE IS as it`s almost 2013y there, so no coverage of the preliminaries, but accurate timesignal at 2300 and 12 chimes of some clock marking the New Year, ``Feliz Año``, M&W screaming over crowd noises, 2303 ``Very Merry Christmas`` spoken in English just a week late; from 2305 a rock concert, including rap in English with refrain ``W- T- F-`` over and over too many times to count, except each word was spoken fully; 2312 something about a ``fine guy from Seattle``, but enough of that. I enjoyed last year`s NY music a lot more. Anyhow they`re having a good time in Madrid tonight, despite the dire situation.

Meanwhile, I also checked 6055 for the French service: 2258 it is also in REE IS but not synch with Spanish frequencies; 2300 opening in French as if it`s an ordinary night. There is CCI under 6055 from algo, maybe R. Nikkei, JAPAN, on grayline but I can`t be sure it`s in Japanese; could also be in French, i.e. RWANDA on very late (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U K [non]. 9740, Dec 31 at 1458, BBCWS has good signal concluding a 2012 year-in-review, 1501 news. This is supposed to be the last day for this SINGAPORE relay which has been inadvertently serving North America well; per DX Re Mix News, Bulgaria, gone from January 1:

0900-1630 on  6195 SNG 125 kW / 000 deg to SEAs English
0900-1630 on  6195 SNG 125 kW / 090 deg to AUS  English

The 13-degree beam we had been getting, even fed by a semi-transmitter, crosses the USA from Duluth to Birmingham, to Habana, close enough at this distance to spread well into Oklahoma.

So BBC`s gradual self-destruxion as a SW broadcaster proceeds. This year for the first time in recent memory, I did not even try to find an offbeam frequency for the arrival of 2013 at Big Ben (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 7350-SSB, Dec 31 at 1425, a Navy MARS net is in informal roundtable, headed by NNN0RBD, with stations such as NNN0TWA; someone mentioning what channel 8 in Jonesboro AR said about the weather; NNN0UTE, weak in Memphis. NCS announced ``4H1B`` (all these in fonetix), presumably the net designator rather than a callsign, that there is no traffic today, so continue with comments. All these were atop a weak Chinese broadcaster, not enough to be a full BFO. HFCC shows CNR Tibetan service from Beijing site.

Googling on the calls, I find:

Initially signal is sufficient, about equal to the jamming if you try to ignore it; by 0553, however, we are under the jamming. Tnx a lot, Arnie! Next tries: Tuesday 1200, Thursday 0430. ** U S A. 5830, Dec 31 at 0627, WTWW-1 is in open carrier/dead air. This was noticed earlier by Jeramy Ross, W5XTL in Lawton OK: ``WTWW is broadcasting dead air/open carrier as of 0409 UT on 5830.`` Still so at 1346, I notice, so has it been mum all-night? Frequency change circa 1400 was accomplished without adding modulation then either; 1407 still OC on 9479. Now I leave a receiver on it, and still no mod at 1501, 1524; then at 1524:45 a canned ID, but back to dead air again. 1535, finally joining SFAW programming.

At 1416 I also check 12105 for WTWW-3 which is usually off the air, but it`s on this Monday in Russian, and by 1527 in Arabic instead. So the Zimbabwe clandestine, R. Dialogue at 16-17, will have CCI today. Seems not only Saturdays but Mondays are more likely for WTWW to be on 12105 in our mornings, as previously logged by Dan Sheedy on December 17. It`s amusing how different preachers have different tics, which I truly believe are mental illness --- some keep interrupting for ``Amen``, others for ``Praise God``, and now this. However, before the 1328 minute was over, obliterated by another station popping on 1090 with Catholic programming in progress about the Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood: Komen woman saying she was misrepresented by bad press in the recent clash over Choice. She too is interrupted clumsily at 1329 for a sign-on announcement from KEXS Excelsior Springs MO, the Catholic station I was expecting, YL saying 3400 watts, and back to Komen/PP stuff in progress (from EWTN, no doubt, obsessed with abortion, as an affiliate of it), seems part of a year-in-review. NRC AM Log however shows 8 kW daytimer, with 4 kW critical hours, and FCC AM Query agrees, so where does she get 3.4 kW? Maybe admitting true reduced power from decrepit transmitter? UNIDENTIFIED. 2910, Dec 31 at 1150 UT I awaken early again, so make the best of it in another attempt to ID this presumed third harmonic of some Mexican on 970. Still it`s a threshold signal as I keep the BFO on it zero-beat, to help a little, but unproductive as I only catch a few words here and there. Spanish talk at tune-in says ``buenos días``, and has SSB ACI again. 1152 a song, 1155 talk, timecheck, mentions Zaragoza, a common name which could be applied to anything, anywhere; ``amigos radioescuchas``, one or two OMs chattering, no YL. 1202 bit of music;

1205 now the YL joins in with her own ``buenos días``; OM handles the TCs, ``6 de la mañana, 5 minutos`` = UT -6, and a song. 1209 ``fin de año`` which it certainly is. 1215 OM & YL alternate talk; 1218 ad, 1219 mentions Juárez, same name remark.
