Glenn Hauser logs May 3-4-5, 2016

UPDATED:

DX/SWL/Media Programs

World of Radio schedule

Alan Roe`s Hitlist of SW Stations

** BOUGAINVILLE. 3325.0, May 5 at 1140, M&W conversing, sounds like Pijin rather than Indonesian, and only hearing one station, at S9 to S7, so NBC presumed; still at 1152 but thence I decide to stick with 5020 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also PNG, SOLOMON

** BRAZIL. 6180.015, May 5 at 0639, RNA is back on, S9+20 and // 11780 music. The surprise reactivation of 6180+ had last been heard on April 9, so who knows if it`s back to stay this time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 6030, May 5 at 1205, Chinese with kid voices as well as adults, and music mixing, S8-S9, so CNR1 Beijing 572 site which operates here long hours, blocking any trace of CFVP (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 15590, May 5 at 1304, heavy CCCCCCI by CNR1 jammer vs VOA Chinese via THAILAND.

11430, May 5 at 1306, JBA carrier, on a frequency Aoki says bears Sound of Hope, and consequently CNR1 jamming. Found this while looking for USB Indonesian QSO pirates in the 11.4`s – not much today.

15430, May 5 at 1323, open carrier, S9+10/20, 1325 suddenly starts Chinese news? with lots of clips inserted, but cuts off at 1328:45*. There is no excuse for jamming here now, scheduled AWR English via Sri Lanka at 1300-1330; maybe setting up for the next victim, R Free Asia, Chinese via Saipan at 1500-1600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 5040, UT Wed May 4 at 0540, RHC fails to broadcast in Spanish like in this hour last night, but instead English, as Arnie in `DXers Unlimited` is talking about sporadic E, sprites and T-storms causing it? Mentions Pat WA5IYX Dyer`s deep research into sporadic E; then explains how RHC 6 MHz channels can be heard on cheap radios just above the MW band, i.e. mixing with third harmonic of local oscillator (which we have also explained years ago).

Yet Arnie never says a word about all the TRANSMITTED spurs out of RHC --- harmonics, intermodulation / leapfrog mixing products, defective modulation, splatter, etc., etc. He leaves that to us.

Wraps up at 0548, with usual marked improvement in audio quality on his standard closing, recorded years ago in studio, compared to his telco phoned-in body of program. RHC has also failed to broadcast English dead air on 6100 during this period like it did last night.

19070, May 5 at 1340, JBA carrier, presumed RHC 2 x 9535 which is confirmed on; yet NO signals on 16m fundamental RHC channels 17580 & 17730 which must be off. Sa`udi Arabia and WRMI are main occupants of the 16m band. Can`t detect any other Cubarmonix on 19280, 19420 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH. 4885, May 5 at 1145, no signal at all from Echo of Hope, which is normally one of the better ones around sunrise on 60m, yet 4940 China is still audible as well as some Indonesian, Indian carriers, so EOH is off? Oops, I must be listening too early for a change as Aoki says it starts at *1150 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PALAU. 11705, May 5 at 1309, S5-S9 open carrier already; 1313 starts talking, and 1315 Sakura theme denoting it`s Radio Japan relay, as scheduled in Indonesian (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 3260.00, May 5 at 1139, song at S7 to S9, no doubt NBC Madang, one of the few SW stations left there. By 1152 during talk it`s down to S3-S5, losing it after our sunrise 1133 UT (in one month it will be earliest at 1114). This inspires me hurriedly to seek other such signals on 120, 105, 90, 75 and 60 metres; see BOUGAINVILLE, SOLOMON ISLANDS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAUDI ARABIA [and non]. 17705.075, May 5 at 1343, Holy Qur`an is S9, one of the stronger signals on band with Cuba lacking; only 17790 WRMI is stronger at S9+10, but much softer. Other BSKSA also on 17615v not measured exactly (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020.0, May 5 at 1144, woman talking, seems Pijin, S9 to S9+10 from SIBC, with more ACI from 5025 Cuba than from 5015 WRMI. From 1153 I forsake the PNGs and stick with this which is expected to sign-off shortly. Now music at S9; 1156 a woman speaking assertively, perhaps a devotional, making out ``the life of the nation``; 1200 brief music, anthem? cut off air at 1200:50* before completion.

I haven`t managed to catch SIBC when it was extending day frequency 9545 into the night, which happened at least on April 26 until 0759* and May 1 still going past 1000 as others captured (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TIBET [non]. 15552, May 4 at 1416, JBA carrier here and on 15550, ergo Voice of Tibet via Tajikistan and a CNR1 jammer respectively. As of April 30, Ivo Ivanov had VOT Tibetan via Dushanbe on 15552 at 1300-1330 & 1415-1430, with 15558 in between.

15518, May 5 at 1303, JBA carrier smax of another VOT Tajikistan frequency jump not yet listed by Aoki or Ivo; instead at this hour Ivo had 15552 as of April 30 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 17770.061, May 4 at 1424, very poor S6 signal off-frequency. Of course, it`s VOT as scheduled in Arabic this hour, 500 kW, 252 degrees from Emirler, which always seems to be off to the high side. Turcalibration leaves a bit to be desired (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1823 monitoring: confirmed Tue May 3 at 2130 on WRMI 15770, very poor compared to 15440 due to azimuths. Also confirmed Tue May 3 at 2330 on WBCQ 9329.82-CUSB, poor. Also confirmed Wed May 4 at 1315 on WRMI 9955, good. Also confirmed Wed May 4 at 2100 on WBCQ webcast and poor at 2126 check on 7489.9. Also confirmed Wed May 3 at 2330 on WBCQ 9329.88-CUSB, poor here but I hope better elsewhere.

WORLD OF RADIO 1824 monitoring: confirmed first SW broadcast Thursday May 5 at 1130 on WRMI 9955, S9+10 loud & clear, rock steady, no jamming audible, SINPO 55555. Next:

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17790, May 4 at 1414 check, not even a carrier detectable from this WRMIBS frequency, yet one can be on 4-MHz-higher 21675 RAN service, so I conclude 17790 must be off. When on, the modulation is always under. So I am forced to tune down to 15440 for a loud & clear signal from Brother HyStairical, currently: ``Masons sell their souls to Satan; Saddam Hussein, Benyamin Netanyahu and Trump are all Masons``. 15440 transmitter has some hum and the signal strength is cutting up and down but not completely off. // 13695 also has VG strength but cutting a bit, and with hum; // 11565 is steady. By 1423, 17790 is on and audible.

15770, Wed May 4 at 2129, WRMI with 1-minute commercial from the ``Smart Money Guy`` --- a spot ad, quite a rarity on SW, not part of a program block. 2130 into `Blues Radio International`, instead of Radio France International still on the schedule for 2115-2200 Wed; and last Thu at 2130-2200 we also heard Ukraine instead of France, so is RFI on WRMI at all any more? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9370, May 4 at 2008, no signal from WWRBS day frequency, which has been missing a lot lately, tsk2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9275, May 4 at 2008, no signal from WMLK. After all, EJOM has said it all, so why keep repeating the same ``Yahweh is the Sacred Name`` stuff? 9265 WINB is only a JBA carrier now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 540, May 5 at 0649 UT, a last check of MW before shut-eye, finds one signal in the clear on the R75 with E-W longwire, mentions Fort Dodge, and then ``AM 540 KWMT``, and PSA from the Iowa State Patrol. No CBK, XEWA, KDFT, XETX or anything else to bother it. I can hear KWMT in the daytime on groundwave mixing with KDFT, so this could be groundwave too, which doesn`t go away at night, but is usually overridden by all the skywave. Except it needs to be on day power. 5000/170 watts U3 which means same pattern day and night, a broad cardioid to the south, null to the north (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 870, May 5 at 1150 UT, plugs for ``Regional Radio``, then fade-out immediately. Propagationally it could be just WWL, but who uses that slogan? None listed in the NRC AM Log. Bingo! Search on radio-locator.com leads to KAAN Bethany MO with that very slogan. It`s a 930-watt non-direxional daytimer which NRC has as OLD, ``America`s Greatest Hits``, and whose exact hours depend on WWL SR/SS. Bethany is 12 miles south of Iowa on I-35 in NW Missouri. (In winters of 2014 & 2015 I had signs of KAAN on daytime bandscans, but now I`m sure.) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VATICAN [non]. Re my log of Vatican in Russian on 11875, May 2 at 1253 via IBB PHILIPPINES, Ivo Ivanov explains why it`s new:
``Frequency change of Vatican Radio from May 2
1230-1300 NF 11875 PHT 250 kW / 332 deg to FERu Russian, ex 12030
// frequency 15370 PHT 250 kW / 332 deg to FERu Russian``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12015, May 5 at 1404, S9+20 VG signal with gospel? rock, then guitar riffs like Jimi, then some vocal music in English, 1406 cut to dead air, 1407:45* off the air, *1408:20 back on, with carrier, 1409:20 resume rockmusic, live concert with applause, 1412:26 cut off the air again and stays off past 1420, 1442 when I quit monitoring.

This was atop the pervasive RTTY on 12015, and so strong it had to be a US site, two of them with the oomph and flexibility to do this: WHRI and Greenville-B. Or maybe WRMI, but its 11565 aimed 315 degrees right at us, is weaker at only S9+10. Yet US stations prudently avoid this RTTY frequency, 12015.

VOA often does transmitter tests about this time, on a frequency different than a later scheduled broadcast, but ought to be on same band, and nothing on 25m from GB except R. Martí already on 11930 from 1400. No listings on 12015 account for this, and it`s certainly not Mongolia or North Korea (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
