Caroline Flashback on DAB

Listeners to our Flashback 'oldies' channel in the Norwich area will soon be able to tune in on DAB. Caroline Flashback will be replacing Radio Norwich on Tuesday 1st September. The possibility of doing so came via Dr Lawrie Hallet, founder of the Norwich DAB multiplex, who enjoys Flashback online and offered advantageous terms leading to our decision ... ‘Let's do it!’. With our main album channel already on eight DAB multiplex up and down the country, this may seem a small step for Flashback, but we hope to be expand the channel's DAB presence elsewhere at some future point. Meanwhile we are recruiting existing and new presenters for daytime live programmes on Flashback.

Glenn Hauser logs August 31, 2020

** AUSTRALIA. 11900, Aug 31 at 1354, south Asian music and then talk by YL in unrecognizable language; S7-S9, outstanding SSOB except for the Cubans and nons. 1359-1400*, Reach Beyond, Australia, sign-off in English sounding more `merican than `strine, not Ecuadorian. Now to figure out language: Day 2 = Monday at 1345-1400 Aoki/NDXC shows it is Cha; EiBi shows CHG --- I guess they both refer to Chhattisgarhi as in WRTH 2020 but now outdated B-19 sked had no such DOW, TOD, nor frequency for it.

But the revised A-20 update as of May 26 confirms it. Now, where and how many Chhattisgarhi speakers are there? EiBi`s readme.txt shows: ``CHG Chhattisgarhi: India-Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar (13m) [hne]`` So there we have three different abbrs. for this obscure language but spoken by more than the population of e.g. Illinois, who must be Christianized!

11825, but wait, there`s more: Mon Aug 31 at 1449, gospel huxter in English also bigsig S7-S9. While E Asian signals like CNR1 jammers are JBA carriers. This is RBA daily at 1430-1500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA [and non]. 7850-USB, Aug 31 at 0610, CHU is weak, but even weaker is CCI from 2-way USB almost same frequency, maybe Brazilian or Spanish. Not first time such intrusion has been detected (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, Aug 31 at 1355-1359: none audible in the 16s, 15s, 14s, 13s, 12s, until JBA carriers: 11500, 11460, 11440, 11170, 11150, 11120, 11100; none in the 10s; 9300; finally 9215 music achieves S3-S5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 4765, Aug 31 at 0238, no signal from R. Progreso, quick check on TWR Boa Vista just as I am mentioning its absence on WOR. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6145 & 6100, UT Mon Aug 31 at 0616, RHC `DXers Unlimited`, Arnie`s prop info seems a bit dated, then outro as the mit-week edition, so despite `Ed Newman` then pointing out that there are two per week, must have been playing the wrong/old one, and 0619 into his `Mailbag`. Something`s always wrong at RHC. But the two last frequencies on air this late both enjoy good modulation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ISRAEL [non]. (9955), WRMI webcast UT Mon Aug 31 at 0400 I check what`s on it after SW turns off: news all about Israel, Gaza, i.e. Israel Radio or whatever they call it now as scheduled for a full hour on WRN web/satcast. But by 0450 or so, wild world music with WRMI ID by BB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9, Aug 31 at 0614, once again no signal from VON, not on 9689.9 nor 11769.9; altho the latter is still being reported in their evenings. But 11770 at 1714 Aug 31 via UTwente only Chinese (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2049 monitoring: confirmed UT Monday August 31 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG direct but some deep fades: this week #13 transmitter does not dump off air before 0100.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 31 at 0130 on WRMI 7780, VG S9+10 via UTwente; also on WRN webcast.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 31 at 0230 on WRMI 7780, VG S9+20 via UTwente; and also for second week surprise 5800, S9+10/20 via TWR Boa Vista KiwiSDR.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 31 from 0259.5 on Area 51 webcast; and WBCQ 5130, S3-S7 via Rochester SDR; closing 0328.5 on 5130 direct S9+10 including HSNL.

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 31 at 0330 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20, no jamming, better than where aimed at TWR Bonaire and Boa Vista. 0358 Maine SDR at S9/+10. As always cuts off the air by 0400* before ID can finish. See also below for 9955 webcast 0400+. Next:

Also confirmed UT Mon Aug 31 from 1800.6 on IRRS 7290 via Bulgaria; S9+20 via UTwente with Synch readout as 72900003.71 Hz. Autonotch checked somewhat reduces the 7291 warble, but no way to get rid of the heavy splash from 7280 Vietnam and 7290 Iran. Continues intact past 1810. However, tuned in earlier: *1755 carrier on; 1758.4 bumps up power so quieter; 1758.8 JIP WOR already running for a few minutes in Belarus [non] item; 1800 interrupted for quick IRRS ID only, FSN headlines, 1800.6 restart WOR. Next:

** U S A. 5950, Aug 31 at 0620, SMTV repetitive music beat suspected of double audio feed but not so obvious until 0623 talk which is horribly duplicated, or is it triplicated. Evidently no one at Okee is monitoring, like no one beyond cares to listen to this cult, as it was thus 24 hours ago; and also in between on 15770 as Wolfgang Bueschel noted:

``15770even WRMI, two time double echo program, SMTV - echo some 1 1/2 second audio later repeat, S=9+20dB at 1610 UT on Aug 30; in Detroit MI, Rochester NY, and Aberdeen NJ US states Perseus server net (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Aug 30)`` --- I could not find this by searching on 15770 since he attached `even` to it! See also ISRAEL [non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15825, Aug 31 at 1451, WWCR-1 S9+10, while an hour before was a JBA carrier. Sporadic E has hit it; DXMAP shows some MUFs to 27 MHz, altho not directly between us. By now it will be a rare day for any FM DX but at least had a few good openings this summer (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9-kHz JBA MW carrier search, Aug 31 at 0637 UT; only 846 presumed TP KIRITIMATI, and 621 presumed TA CANARY ISLANDS. No 711, while 710 is dominated by on-frequency Rebelde CUBA // 5025 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs August 28-29-30, 2020

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-CUSB, Re August 29 missing LRA36 broadcast of Buenos Aires productions, Wolfgang Bueschel sends an automatic translation:

``-------- Original message --------
Fw: Shipments from the Antarctic (LRA 36), among others in German :-(
Date: Sat, 29 Aug 2020 14:46:14 +0000 (UTC)
From: RAEDeutsch <raedeutsch@yahoo.com.ar>

Dear friend! We have just been informed that the program scheduled for today unfortunately not broadcast due to a severe storm, so a new date is planned for it. Pity! LG from rainy Buenos Aires and have a nice weekend! Rayén Braun - German editorial team`` --- what`s LG?

At 2150 I recheck Brasil remote, just in case it came on in time for English, but nothing. Some hours later I consult Accuweather for conditions at Esperanza: ``Current Weather 9:05 PM: -31°C, RealFeel® -60°, Air Quality Fair, Wind SW 87 km/h, Wind Gusts 120 km/h, Cloudy`` --- that is certainly extreme, but the people and the equipment are stuck there anyway, so why not broadcast? Was there damage to rhombic antenna? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 11780, Aug 29 at 2134, RNA is S4-S7 and suptorted. Don`t they know at Rodeador Park site, or don`t they care? Hardly the only SW station which keeps transmitting despite severe defects, reflecting very poorly on the station and the nation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11670, Aug 29 at 2342, RHC in Spanish // 11760. Checking since Rick Barton, AZ, heard English on 11670, Aug 23 at 2320. That hour is supposed to be on 7385 and 5040. I do hear it poorly vs HSNL on 5040, but only a JBA carrier on 7385, surely something else, probably TIBET tho WHRI is also registered. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EUROPE. Free Radio Service Holland: S8-S9 but noisy on both 5789.910v and 7700.136v via UTwente at 1755 rock music, 1757 as 200th broadcast, acknowledging web receiver listener in Buenos Aires. Supposed to be running until 2100. Is site really in Netherlands? Plenty of private stations are now licensed, but this remains pirate? Sorry, but I would rather listen to `Pipedreams` $tereo organ music as usual Sundays 17-19 UT, and `With Heart and Voice` at 19-20 via WYSU webcast (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GERMANY. 9670.00439v, re my report of FTIOM & UBMP test via Channel 292, Friday Aug 28: ``...But fading up by 1725 to S9+15 peak on 9670.00439 locked, almost tolerable, back down to S7. Is anyone else listening anywhere with better reception? Glenn`` --- Dave Kenny, UK, replies Aug 29 to the WOR iog:

``Reception on 9670 was very good on SDRs in Ireland and in the west of England yesterday. I also checked on a couple of Spanish receivers where it was OK too – but not as good as Ireland/UK. Twente is far too close for the skip at 9 MHz and the Lisbon receiver seems fairly deaf and noisy. 73s Dave`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 9925, UT Sun Aug 30 at 0000, The Mighty KBC via Nauen, GERMANY, is opening at only S5-S7. Kraig Krist now confirms that from next week, the Sunday-only 0000-0200 broadcast will revert to 5960. I check that now and hear nothing, tho CNR 100 kW ND from Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN, land of ChiCom persecution of Uyghurs, is still in HFCC from 2330 until 1800, and presumably still off-frequency-minus, a CCI problem further east, especially circa Europe, but KBC won`t move (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9v, Aug 30 at 0558, again no signal from VON. Wolfgang Bueschel says at 0851 Aug 30, ``7254.9v 06-11 UT requested - vague imprecise -, nothing heard here in past days, empty channel this Aug 30 morning also`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 515-MCW kHz, Aug 30 at 1451 daytime, NDB PN Ponca City is still OFF; 341-MCW, EI locally Enid is still on but JBA. Yesterday afternoon could hear EI on the N/S shortwire, but not on the magloop which may be having problems (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U K [non]. 12095, UT Sun Aug 30 at 0431, BBCWS via OMAN, VG to UTwente at 320 degrees, with première of new show until November, `Comedians vs The News`. Alan Roe found the only other SW frequencies would be 13580 also Oman, which goes out at 10 degrees and much weaker; and 9915 via Madagascar, which I was trying before 0430 but not as good on remotes altho it should be the only possibility directly into North America if checked. The co-hosts say they are a Canadian Lesbian married couple, also bi-cultural obviously from their names. Their two other foreign guests this week are from India and Mexico, as they satirize current news; fun show, and can be found on podcasts via https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct0x37 where Alan says he also will have to get it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2049 monitoring: confirmed Sat Aug 29 at 1949 UT at Algeria, so just started, on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, Wentzville MO, S7 via KiwiSDR in nearby Warrenton.

Missed Sat Aug 28 at 2300 on WRMI 7780; did anyone hear it?

Also confirmed UT Sun Aug 30 at 0328 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, sufficient but high storm noise level [HSNL], over Arkansas, not Missouri, about 2 minutes in so started circa 0326. Next:

** U S A. (5085) $tereo WTWW-2 webcast, UT Sun Aug 30 starting at 0026 after hamstuff, anonymous theatre organ music show from Bob Heil in Belleville IL. Yes, he never mentions any program name, so I still call it `Theatre Organ [NOT] in the Ozarx`. or TONITO. Most of this show is ``virtual`` performance by Len Larsen(sp?) who sent some kind of memory card which Bob inserts into his own organ to run it, pulling stops, etc., but without keys going up and down. LL had previously sampled the best thorgans around the country for each simulated instrument! Runs until 0056.5, back to rock.

After this at 0100-0200 UT Sundays, I habitually listen to `Encore` classical music, VG via WRMI 5850 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5950, Aug 30 at 0601, SMTV via WRMI with double audio feed echoing; has happened before, wonder how? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9265V, Sat Aug 29 at 1356, WINB playing Dixieland, `Saints Go Marchin` In`, 1359 ID distorted. As always the frequency is constantly wobbling, as no one else ever mentions. Is on air mornings, only weekends (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 4840, Sun Aug 30 at 0604, S9+10/20 of dead air again from WWCR, while 3215 & 5890 are Brother HyStairical. Happens over and over in nightmiddle, automation misprogramming? as if, zzz, no one at 1300 WWCR Ave know or care (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Aug 30 at 0607: only 621, presumed Canaries; not even 846 Kiritimati TP (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

TIPS FOR RATIONAL LIVING

Nina Jankowicz (Wilson Center): "Imagine leading a media organization and insinuating your reporters are spies. I have colleagues who are being forced to return to dangerous environments because USAGM won't renew their visas. They will be at risk because they've done critical, truthful reporting while at VOA. These people have USG security clearances and have been heavily vetted, usually multiple times. They join USAGM because they're committed to bringing reliable information to environments where it's hard to get. Pack's statements are endangering USAGM employees around the globe." https://twitter.com/wiczipedia/status/1299442605420412935  (and thread)(via Kim Elliott)

Nina J. has also just appeared on CSPAN2, ``How to lose the information war``, 17-18 UT Aug 30, and: https://www.c-span.org/video/?474415-1/how-lose-information-war (gh)

Glenn Hauser logs August 29, 2020

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-CUSB, LRA36 publicized a big broadcast for Sat Aug 29, alternating Spanish and German at 1500-2030, then English at 2030-2200. But: Not a trace from 1500 past 1540 on any Brazilian or Argentine SDR I can access. Is anyone hearing it anyhow? There has been a propagation disturbance as long predicted. Note admission of low power 800 watts. WRTH 2020 said ``1 x 10 kW (operated at 1.5 kW). F.pl: increase output to 10 kW`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR iog)

Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, replies at 1612: ``Hi, transmission suspended due to bad weather. Best 73,s`` (Glenn Hauser, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 6134.8, Aug 29 at 0554, weak signal sounds like Brasilian talk, but cuts off air 0555* before I can measure it exactly; presumed R. Aparecida. Nothing audible on 9630v by 0558 while RVM is audible, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 5939.5, Aug 29 at 0557, music and soon announcement in Brazilian, sounds like official RVM canned ID, S4 vs S9 noise crashes, and not too much 5935 WWCR now. Within a few Hz of 5939.500 producing equal hets, SSB tuned to 5939 and 5940.

9664.808, Aug 29 at 0559, Brazilian talk at S4-S6 from always-off-frequency RVM. Only ZY audible now on 31 or 49m (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey Aug 29 at 1352: none higher than 12880 JBA carrier; also 11460, 11170, 11150, 11120, 10960; 10160 trace of Chinese; 9215 S3-S5 of Chinese (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13820, Aug 29 at 1315, noise jamming where there has been no RM since March. Something`s always wrong at DCJC. Also jams its real frequency 13605 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13740, Aug 29 at 1315, RHC on here but not 13700 and no spurs, with report on COVID-19 statistics in Cuba by provincias, municipios, barrage of figures I don`t try to copy but I think he said the mortality rate was under 3%; from echoey venue.

Still no 13700 at 1352, but by 1454, 13700 is on and 13740 is off. Nominal skeds for these two: 13700, 13-15 to San Francisco; 13740, 11-14 to Buenos Aires, but not noticeably weaker here. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9v, Aug 29 at 0602, VON is AWOL again, and not on 9689.9v either (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2049 monitoring: almost confirmed
Saturday August 29 at 1310, the 1300 on WRMI 15770, JBA traces of talk.

Also confirmed at 1615 the 1600 Saturday on all WRN webcasts, presumed International-Vacuum satellites too. Next:

One may also contribute by MO or check in US funds on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1070, Aug 29 received this reply to my report of the WCSZ DX test: ``Hi Glen[n], Thanks for your report - it confirms your reception of WCSZ on August 22, 2020. This was non-DA, at 50 kW the entire time. They were DA daytime until about ten years ago, when that equipment was removed. Three towers at night, aimed at the ocean with Greenville [SC] in it's main lobe.  Indianapolis kills them in their fringes at night. Al Hajny`` --- that`s it, no eQSL attached.

S.S. is an ~8K suburb on the NW side of Greenville. My Collins Gem pocket dixionary, originally owned by G. B. Hancock for a 5th hour French class, says souci means: care, worry, anxiety, solicitude, marigold; but Google says the expression, without any of those = carefree. The Arizonans skipped the French for their Carefree, as Paul Harvey used to remind us, north of Phœnix, presumably a retirement community (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Aug 29 at 0606: nothing but 621, presumed CANARY ISLANDS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 1725 UT August 29

Voice of Tibet Dushanbe Yangi Yul azimuths different in degrees ?

TAJIKISTAN   Voice of Tibet noted at Aug 29:
13.15 UT 9864 and 9876
13.33 UT 9876 and 9894
13.53 UT 9864 and 9894 -
and 9895 kHz CNR1 jamming on even x.5 kHz frequency.

No 30 kHz spurs apart distance noted today Aug 29.

I guess two DIFFERENT azimuths out of Dushanbe in usage,
the stronger signal noted in Doha Qatar, Delhi, Hanoi Vietnam
is the 131 degr assumed azimuth towards Lhasa Tibet. Himalaya,

but for example 9876 kHz is much weaker signal all the time,
noted on SDR's in P.R.China and Hiroshima Japan,
so I guess an azimuth of 70 degrees is in use instead,
towards central China, Bejing / Eastern China coast.

``There will be a test of FTIOM & UBMP on 9670 kHz (Channel 292 from Germany) from 1600-1800 UTC. The rest of the week's schedule follows:`` My sequence of WOR iog posts: ``What date for this? Like before, Friday, 28th? Glenn``

Yes, it`s today Friday Aug 28. Listening via UTwente, signed on late at 1603, VP signal. By 1623 only a JBA carrier or bits of music and hash on frequency; something on 9665 but not enough to QRM. Nothing at Portugal KiwiSDR, which should be better skip distance. 1719 still nothing at Lisboa; wild jazz S7 audible at UTwente but far too much noise/hash to enjoy. But fading up by 1725 to S9+15 peak on 9670.00439 locked, almost tolerable, back down to S7. Is anyone else listening anywhere with better reception? Glenn`` By 1730 tuneout, Bill is plugging his Sept 7 specials on Channel 292 and WBCQ. Wolfgang Bueschel replies:

``Such mini 10 kW non-directional antenna broadcast to either western Europe, nighttime across ocean to Maine and Massachusetts, or UTC nighttime to European Russia target IS INEFFECTIVE. It is necessary to  r e n t  the real broadcaster 100 kilowatt or 300 kW powerful units in ORS Moosbrunn Austria, MBR Nauen Germany or CJSC Yerevan Gavar Armenia. 73 wb`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9, Aug 28 at 0623, VON is on for a change, S9+10/20, and with good modulation for a change, talk in presumed Hausa about COVID-19 -- number pronounced in English -- and demokrasi (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2049 monitoring: confirmed first WRMI broadcast, Friday August 28 at 2200 on 9955, good via TWR Bonaire SDR and no jamming audible.

Also confirmed UT Sat Aug 29 at 0130 on WRMIs: 9955 better S4-S6 via Boa Vista than Bonaire; 7780 good S9+10 via UTwente.

From Unique Radio, Australia website, https://www.uniqueradio.biz/ --- ``Unique Radio SHORTWAVE FEED 5045 kHz & 3210 kHz has ended due to relocation. Podcasts and online continue as usual. Unique 2SG & Classic Hits from the 60's to the 80's and beyond · The Sound of Gunnedah and the Northwest - New Local Radio Coming Soon``

Is 2SG a legal, licensed unique callsign, in NSW pattern as if were on MW? Since this weekly WOR schedule deals with SW, not webcast-only, Unique Radio will no longer appear here, but WOR times remain: 0900 UT Fri & Mon; 0700 UT Sat & Sun. Will its SW ever resume? Next:

** U S A. 6159.9v, Aug 28 at 2347, S8-S9 but noisy, WBCQ `Old Tyme Radio` is opening an episode of `Amos `n` Andy` as re-produced by Ed Bolton; a little late if to finish by hourtop? But it does, now listening to Area 51/61 webcast, 2357 organ theme and outro. 0000 Aug 29 into `Crusader Rabbit` instead of `AAAWWW`, which has already started WTO theme and interjexions on 7490 webcast. Allan soon plugs OTR show but says he is now on 6160; random conversation with Angela, including benefits of vertical antenna to reduce horizontally-polarized noise. 0023 false-start to politix he always says he doesn`t want to get into on show, is quadri-casting on 3265, 5130, 6160, 7490. Angela is wearing soft, sexy, pants he hasn`t seen her in before.

0026 I check Rochester SDRs and indeed AAAWWW is heard on 6160 and the others; but still NOT on the A51/61 webcast; at 0027 it exclaims, ``Dr Becker`s Magic Mushrooms on the Lumpy Gravy Show``. Back on AAAWWW, 0032 confirms date as 28 August YOOL 2020; then A&A really get into politix: hypocrisy, ``deep state`` conspiracy nonsense; they can`t comprehend how anyone could vote for Biden instead of Trump, thus ending freedom and everything in America. (Me, if I had to choose lesser of evils, it would be Socialism instead of Trump`s Fascism; in fact Democratic Socialism is not evil at all but successful in much of N/W Europe; but the populace needs to be unselfish, a tough call for Americans, and a Canadian.) Reads long anti-Democratic screed e-mailed by more than one listener; Angela is also anti-vac, but Allan claims to be pro-science. 0059 prayer and 0100 over to Hal Turner. Here`s John Carver`s version:

``Tonight's show started on time on 7490 and just a few seconds later on 5130 and 6160. I don't check 3265 as it's such a pain to do so. Allan and Angela in the studio. Opening positive talk about the Area 61 Old Time Radio program on 6160 and all the positive comments they have received about it. Then a plug for shortwave listening in general. Some antenna talk then into antennas on dumbphones. Angela broke in and said they should have a picnic on top of the superstations antenna and Allan quips that they are the only two people at the station that could climb to the top and still function. Then into TV antennas and finally back to radio antennas. Then talk of antenna problems in FLA because of all the noise down there.

By 0023 they start to slowly drift into some political talk even though Allan said he didn't like to do political talk during his show. Allan distracted us by talking about how Angela was dressed and when the discussion restarted we were back to talking of dumbphones again. Angela brought up Pirate Joe and Allan stated that he was a communist, left wing liberal and we're back into politics. Then Allan read an older email from Ross on the Cape and it had to do with the election and the general conditions in this country at this time. Angela got animated after this and Allan started to read another email that had to do with draining the swamp.

Reading of regular emails began at 0052 and Angela got a little wild. Closing prayer at 0058 and program was off the air at 0100 again in mid-sentence. John, Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

FRS-Holland 200th Broadcast August 30th

Upcoming Sunday August FRS-Holland will be on air celebrating its 200th official broadcast on short wave.
The FRS presenting team is excited about this milestone and looking forward to this special broadcast.
Neither costs nor efforts were spared to serve you, the listener, with the best in Free Radio.
That means an evening full of  great music but above all interesting info blocks related to our 40 year history.

40 years? Yes, one day later, Monday August 31st 2020  FRS-Holland becomes 40 years.
We have decided to split the festivities: on Sunday our 200th broadcast and late October/ early November the
celebration of our 40th Anniversary.  Of course we will inform you prior to that broadcast.

But for now we concentrate on our 200th....look at   for full details:

FRS-Holland's 200th Broadcast

Next Sunday August 30th- 40 years minus one day after FRS-Holland's official start back in 1980- the first of two festive broadcasts will take place.
Don't be misunderstood: this won't be the celebration of our 40th Anniversary! We save that one for later this year in October/ early November.
Next Sunday it concerns our 200th official broadcast. And all of us at FRS are eager to bring you the best in Free Radio. 'Statistics & Numbers' is a common thread through all of our evening shows. Each show contains a number of info topics based on statistics & numbers related to FRS' long history. Also the choice of music is (partly) related to this subject. Of course mail will be handled in all shows and: we feature a little competion. Win yourself a radio DVD! We will draw three prize winners.
Programmes run from 16:52- 21:00 UTC/ 18:52- 23:00 CEST. Frequencies: 5790//7700 kHz. There might be a third frequency...keep an eye on the FRS website for the latest information. We will publish a 'Latest News' item on Sunday, not long before the start of the actual broadcast. We hope we can count on you: tune in and let us know about reception and the programmes. Hope to meet you next Sunday!

Propagation News – 30 August 2020

It was a quiet week, with zero sunspots and relatively quiet geomagnetic conditions and a maximum Kp index of three. After the new sunspots appeared over the past few weeks it did look like Solar Cycle 25 was getting under way. But now it looks like we may have to wait a little longer, languishing at solar minimum for the next couple of months.

It was not all bad news though. Laurie, G3UML reports good conditions on 20m SSB. He worked A25 Botswana and ZS3 South Africa, plus Ross, ZL1WN in New Zealand via the long path. Laurie said signals from the Middle East were also strong.

A series of narrow coronal holes are now beginning to partially face Earth. An elevated coronal hole stream should begin to move past Earth by Saturday, 29 August which could lead to an elevated Kp index and visible aurora at higher latitudes.

Other than that there is little to see on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft imagery. Barring surprises, this suggests the Sun will remain quiet from Monday.

NOAA has the solar flux index at 70-71 for the next seven days. The elevated Kp index over the weekend may cause maximum usable frequencies (MUFs) to decline, but next week should see the ionosphere settle back down to a Kp maximum of two, and normal HF conditions.

Maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path should remain similar to previous weeks. Expect 20 metres to be the DX band of choice, with some openings on 17m at times. There is always the chance of DX appearing on 15, 12 and even 10 metres, but these openings are likely to be short-lived and infrequent.

The good news is that next week we move into September, which should see a return to higher MUFs and better DX as the month progresses. This will also be a good time to work north-south paths, such as the UK to South Africa and South America.

VHF and up:

This period of more changeable weather is going to be hard to break and it looks like any weak ridges between the lows will be transient affairs. They are therefore unlikely to feature highly as tropo events, although the odd temporary lift is possible. The nature of unsettled weather, like the spell we’re in now, is such that the late summer sunshine can easily produce showers or even thunderstorms. These are very good for rain scatter and for most of the period from this weekend to next, a weather front or heavy showers may not be far away. So we’re entering another potentially productive period for the GHz rain scatter enthusiasts.

We are running out of time to mention sporadic E, so this may be the penultimate week. Clutching at straws perhaps, but there are some good jet streams in periods of unsettled weather and the next week will continue to look promising from a weather perspective, even though events are likely to be thin on the ground.

Moon declination is at a minimum this Sunday, but goes positive again on Friday, meaning Moon windows are getting longer. EME path losses are still rising, with apogee a week this Sunday. 144MHz sky temperatures are low all week, but the low Moon elevations mean that the noisy horizon will be in antenna beamwidths for the first part of the week.

Just one small meteor shower this week, the Aurigids, peaking on Monday with a zenith hourly rate of six. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Our closest star seems to have quieted again. We have now experienced 7 consecutive days with no sunspots.

Average daily sunspot number dropped from 5.4 to 1.9 this week, and average daily solar flux declined from 71 to 70.4. Geomagnetic indicators increased marginally, with average daily planetary A index going from 4.4 to 5.1, and average middle latitude A index from 5 to 6.

Predicted solar flux is 70 on August 28 – September 3; 71 on September 4; 72 on September 5 – 9; 71 on September 10 – 16; 70 on September 17 – 27; 71 on September 28 – 30; 72 on October 1 – 6, and 71 on October 7 – 11.

Predicted planetary A index is 8, 10, 12, and 8 on August 28 – 31; 5 on September 1 – 17; 8 on September 18 – 19; 10, 15, and 10 on September 20 – 22; 5, 10, 12, and 18 on September 23 – 26; 15 on September 27 – 28; 12 on September 29, and 5 on September 30 – October 11.

OK1HH is on his annual hiatus, so no geomagnetic prediction from him this week. Instead, we present a much more limited forecast from Tomas Bayer of the Budkov Observatory in the Czech Republic. Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period August 28 – September 3:

Quiet: August 27, Sep 1 – 3

Unsettled: August 27 – 31, Sep 1 – 2

Active: possible August 30 – 31

Minor storm: 0

Major storm: 0

Severe storm: 0

Geomagnetic activity summary: Friday, August 28, we expect the most quiet conditions yet. Friday evening, more unsettled conditions are possible. The most unsettled conditions are expected over the weekend, Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30. The unsettled stage can also peak by any isolated active event.

After Monday, August 31, we expect waning of the unsettled conditions to quiet-to-unsettled level. The first 3 days of September, we expect quiet conditions to return. — Tomas Bayer, RWC Prague, Institute of Geophysics of the ASCR Prague, Department of Geomagnetism, Budkov Observatory

Since sunspots are fading (I assure you this is temporary) we have received another of the occasional reminiscences of Solar Cycle 19, this one from Bill, W5EC.

“I would love for everyone to experience another cycle 19 in the next 10 years.

“I received my Novice license in 1954 at the age of 16. My station was an S-38 and a homemade 6V6 xmtr on 80 meters, crystal controlled. Later, I was given a 40 meter crystal and I enjoyed more-distant QSOs. One night I was called by a very strange call, and I learned that I was talking to CM7JA in Camaguey, Cuba. My first DX, and I was hooked. I built a mighty Heathkit AT-1 and moved to 15 meters in my quest for DX. Hawaii was my first DX on 15.

“I received my General in 1955, and built a Heathkit VFO. Now I was set for DX. In late 1954, the SSN was bouncing around 5, good for 80 and 40. In late 1955 the SSN was bouncing around 70, and 20, 15, and 10 were alive with signals from everywhere. I upgraded to an NC-98 receiver and a Globe Scout transmitter, and in late 1956 the SSN was about 160. I thought DX could not be better than this.

“But it did! I built a homemade 10-meter beam made from bamboo poles wrapped in aluminum foil and could contact anyone I could hear. By the end of 1957, the SSN was 200 with excursions to 250. All the high bands were open all night long. It was fantastic! Most of my operation was on CW with an occasional QSO on AM, if I heard a new one.

“By 1958, school and girls competed with radio for my attention, but I always found some time to operate. SSN was still up around 160. Soon it was graduation, job, marriage, and kids but I always found time to flip the new-and-improved rig on. I was also working on getting those elusive QSL cards to improve my DXCC standing.

“Now at 82, I am still working DX but mostly on FT8, and I am looking forward to an exciting Solar Cycle 25. I hope y’all can experience what I did.

” -- Bill, W5EC. DXCC #1 Honor Roll/Mixed: 362/340/CW: 346/339

Thanks, Bill, for the report from the mid-20th century. Nice to hear of a Yagi built from bamboo poles wrapped in aluminum foil.

I hope we see more sunspots soon, and one thing we have to look forward to currently is improved propagation due to seasonal effects. We are just a few weeks away from the autumnal equinox.

Here’s a new video from Tamitha Skov, WX6SWW, the Space Weather Woman.

Sunspot numbers for August 20 – 26 were 13, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, and 0, with a mean of 19. The 10.7-centimeter flux was 69.9, 70.9, 70, 70.6, 70.3, 70.6, and 70.4, with a mean of 70.4. Estimated planetary A indices were 3, 4, 8, 7, 3, 4, and 7, with a mean of 5.1. Middle latitude A index was 4, 5, 13, 7, 3, 3, and 7, with a mean of 6.
