Glenn Hauser logs May 15-16, 2015

** BRAZIL. 11745 & 11815, May 16 at 0157, crackling spurs from 11780.1v RNA/RNB; no trace of RBC under it on 11815 now (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 9315, May 16 at 0217, R. Cairo ID in English, chanting and drumming, 4+1 timesignal ending at 0218:17! Obviously just a sound-effect, not possibly intended to be accurate, to introduce the ``0215`` newscast after well-worn news theme.

BTW: ``Radio Cairo on Livestream.com --- News from a friend at Radio Cairo, Mayar Adel. Prepare to login or get your own account or
something.
(Clara Listensprechen, May 14, WORLD OF RADIO 1773, DX LISTENING DIGEST)``

Not really live, but apparently a daily upload of the 2300-2430 UT English broadcast to North America, which is also on SW 9965; unofficial, on her own initiative? (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1773, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

9965, May 16 at 0217, R. Cairo in Arabic, not // 9315 this time, stronger and less distorted than 9315.

13850, May 16 at 0220, R. Cairo fair-good signal with open carrier plus some crackling and hum, unreadable. 13850 at 0525 recheck now the modulation is motorboating, suptorted Arabic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9420, May 16 at 0154, Greek music and talk, fair with flutter, so Avlis is on tonight. I suppose it`s no longer called ERTOpen with ERT itself officially reëstablished as of May 11 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non]. 6185-, May 16 at 0222, XEPPM with low-modulated music suffering QRM from SAH and presumed Armenian talk, as this is currently the only conflict in our evenings, Vatican Radio at 0210-0230 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. Sporadic E TV DX with several stations competing on channel A2 --- and still in analog, for a little while longer from deep inside Mexico. My antenna remains stuck almost southward so good for part of Mexico. All times UT on May 16:

1433 on 2, turn on to find opening in progress with lucha libre, among other CCI; there is a bug in upper right, looks like one or two words of text on one line. Very likely TELEACTIVA which means XEFB-TV Monterrey NL is still on. Reference: http://tvdxtips.com/mexlogosch2.html
Beware however that Azteca 13 net bug is now the word TRECE

1453 on 2, retune just in time to catch tail of promo with big 55, and audio mentioning 55 aniversario de Telecentro de Guadalajara, so XEWO-TV is still on too! Back to lucha libre, with Huracán Ramírez, apparently post-produced rather than live. (This station a.k.a. MASVISION, +v as bug but unconfirmed this time.)

1504 on 2, net 5 Televisa bug in LR, animation, but which transmitter?

1506 on 2, different bug in LR, small circular --- yes, it`s the Televisa net-2 star, but which transmitter? XEW-TV DF itself?

1510 on 2, ``Las 7 de la Mañana`` visual promo, play on numbers as net/program name, and/or the time it is on; if so, a very long program as now it`s after 10 am CDT. Usual assumption for Azteca net-7 from the south is XHTAU in Tampico, so still on? If we had definite info about which low-band stations are gone to DTV on UHF as of any given date, we could eliminate some possibilities.

1521 I check the 6m Es map, and as usual, shows hardly any ham contacts to Mexico, just a single one in the NE corner. Most of the Es is over central US centered over Memphis TN.

1524 on 2, movie? with definite Televisa-2 star bug in LR

1528 on 2, Info 7 promo mixing with music from net-2 (?)

1533 on 2, 7 bug in LR dominates briefly

1545 on 2, Televisa net-5 bug in LR, not much left by 1600

1629 on 2, animated 7 logo fades in briefly, nothing more by 1745. Second set with antenna split on ch 3 and 4 never got anything (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MICRONESIA [non]. 4755.5+, May 16 at 1153, no signal from PMA The Cross. Still powerless? Ron Howard says they had been off for three days as of May 12, when Sylvia Kalau at station told him Typhoon Dolphin caused power outage, tho building and tower were OK, unlike their church with roof blown off. She was waiting for power lines to be fixed; still not done?

Other 60m signals at this time included JBA carrier on 4750, which I will not assume was Makassar; better one on 4870- with music at 1155, which I will assume was Wamena; and 5020 Solomon Islands, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 7255 & 9690, May 16 at 0628 check, no signals from VON, so either not on for 0600 Hausa this date, or I tuned in too late (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950-AM, UT Sat May 16 at 0535, narrative in English with deep fades but fair peaks when a few words are copied: arms business, organized crime in America, cold dead hands. Voice synthetic? Not sure. 0539, ``Radio Garbanzo --- Gary, shut the *uc*ing door`` with ecstatic feminine SFX, Garbanzo mentioned again, novelty song. 0547 another polemic about the US Constitution and right to weapons. Haven`t heard any pirates lately earlier in the evening, so surprised to find one on so late, and then another on 6875.

It seems the mostly-eastern pirate monitoring crew were not expecting anything this late either, as the only log at hfunderground is unID:

``UNID 6950 / 6875 AM 0516 UTC 16 May 2015 « on: Today at 15:15 » SDR recording catch. Sign on seemed to be 0516, weak carrier noted, with some music. Off at 0601? Back on 6875 AM at 0602? About the same signal strength. Off a minute or two later. Back on 6875 at 0607. Off at 0645? Chris Smolinski Westminster, MD``

6875-, AM, May 16 at 0610, found a second pirate on way late (assuming it`s from eastern North America), slightly on the lo side, poor-fair with hard rock music, then ``shortwaveghost@----.com`` address; 0614 another brief announcement, ID? and more hard rock; still on at 0626 when I quit. Not the same as the 6950 station.

Several reports earlier in evening of Shortwave Ghost, 6875 or 6872.8:

** OKLAHOMA. 2899.75 approx., further chex of the KWHW Altus second harmonic:

0112 UT May 16, there it is with YL talk, phone-in, vs heavy storm noise from TX panhandle area.

0128 UT May 16, I try to hear any trace of a LAH below 1450, but cannot. Really not transmitting on the fundamental??

How about higher harmonix? I check 4350 and 5800, May 16 at 1137 UT, but nothing. There`s a big ute circa 4345.

1142 UT, 2900- is still audible with narrative, western accent, and may well be that syndicated cowboy show with Red whatshisname, then C&W song.

KWHW has an active website, http://kwhw.com but apparently with no plain old program schedule, a defect of so many stations. What are they thinking???

Has a variety of rotating slogans. Shown on the website logo are PURE COUNTRY and Love Our Country. Positioning implies they apply respectively to AM and FM, so not duplicating? I hear dual IDs as if they are. Separate streams are also offered. The K of the callsign is a boot with a notch at the top.

At 1238 UT, a bit stronger with C&W music. Still audible at 1408 UT, but weaker. 1411 canned YL ID as ``The home of the ----, KWHW``, probably referring some local SBG team, sounded like with E`s in it. Website mentions Lady Bulldogs for BKB, out of season but with a camp pending. Then into a `honky-tonk` tune. 1418 UT, ``KWHW AM & FM ---- ` another slogan I can`t copy. 1423 UT some ads; 1430 UT ``KWHW 93.5 and AM 1450`` by same YL. Time to turn off and tune in Mexican TVDX (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PUNTLAND. 13800, May 16 at 1240, JBA carrier, presumed R. Puntland active (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020.0, May 16 at 1151, SIBC with better poor signal than usual, so I can axually copy some of the YL talk which seems like it`s in plain English; not much problem with QubaRM 5025 still there but weakening. At 1156 she says ``thank you so much for your company`` and turns it over to an over-assertive OM gospel huxter for presumed closing devotional, violating Separation of Church and State: mentions people of Israel, Jesus, Solomon Islands, Satan, judgment, runs past 1200. 1201.4 back to YL for sign-off, maybe mentions 9 MHz? 1203 NA until 1204.3, carrier off at 1204.6* (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN [and non]. 13800, May 16 at 0526, R. Dabanga via MADAGASCAR, good signal with tone jamming, and not synchronized with // 11645 via VATICAN. Mod stops at 0527:14 and carrier off at 0527:34*. Instead of a ragged overlap as previously logged, the VATICAN carrier on 13800 does not come on until *0527:56 and now its immediate modulation is syncro with 11645. 13800 now has a stronger signal than from MAD had, unusual, but still suffering from tone jammers/hets on the hi side. 11645 signal is weaker but still good, and the tone jammers for it are still weakly up on ex-11650 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1773 monitoring: confirmed Friday May 15 at 2153 check on WRMI 15770; and also on 7570, but not synchronized, so separate playouts from System D and System F, respectively, now scheduled on both. 7570 is about 38 seconds later than 15770. The usual start time had really been 2130.5. Next:
Sun 0315v WA0RCR  1860-AM [no Gateway 160 this week due to Dayton]
Sun 2100  WRMI   15770 [scheduled, but not last week, nor on 7570]

** U S A. 11920, May 16 at 0153, WRMI still playing fill music instead of Fámily Radio in Spanish. Likewise 7730, May 16 after 0200. However,

7570, May 16 at 1148, VG signal in Chinese mentioning Shanghai, so that FSI service remains, 11-12 UT via #11 transmitter on 315-degree antenna (there`s also Japanese scheduled 10-11, it too still on?). A 355-degree antenna would be closer to crossing China, but maybe unavailable (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5830, May 16 at 1137, no signal from WTWW-1, nor on 9475. Of course, nothing from WTWW-2 either, 5085. By 1406, 9475 is on with SFAW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 3185, May 16 at 1140, no signal from WWRB/BS. Normally it`s still audible well past 1200 over day path. Not on 5050 either.  No signal (no loss) on day frequency either, 9370 at 1406 May 16 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1340, May 16 at 0206 UT, dominant signal atop graveyard jumble is country music; loops NNW/SSE like OKC, but that`s a sports station. Likely KAND Corsicana TX, next station beyond in same direxion. 0208 UT tune ends and awaiting ID, announcement, or segué, but nothing, as if signed off, which a graveyarder would not need to do. Probably just an automation SNAFU (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
