Glenn Hauser logs July 28, 2022

** CUBA. 6060, July 28 at 0610, RHC English S9 but undermodulated also vs high storm noise level; 6165 is S9+20 but just barely modulated; but 6100 is well-modulated S9+20/30. 5040 is off. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, July 28 at 1509, RHC Spanish, S9/+10, just barely modulated but what I can hear is also distorted. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 28 at 0500, I miss checking UR1 via WRMI for `Ukraine: Security Issue`; instead know we can hear it here: http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_27_07_22.mp3

Of 7+ minutes for day 157 of the war, including: four strikes on Russian strongholds in Kherson region; optimistic Kherson city will be liberated; new weapons arriving helpful, but not enough; more than 25 megatons of grain now expected to be delivered; American banks to be charged for continuing to do business with Russia.

Or, after going thru a few steps from: http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/ua_security_issue where it says, and also available in up to 7 other languages: ``Actual news about the russian-Ukrainian war. Every day, Ukrainian Radio prepares a digest of the most important news about the russian-Ukrainian war in the format of short podcast. We offer only reliable information from confirmed sources: reports on the course of the war, coverages from cities attacked by russia, as well as news about life in the home front regions of Ukraine. If you want to be aware of the situation in Ukraine, but do not have time to read the news all day – the “Ukraine: security issue” is for you.``

As for missing from usual 0500 UT start, the night before, Richard Langley says, ``Based on my recording of the relay of UR1 by Radio Baltic Waves International using the U. Twente SDR receiver, "Ukraine: security issue" began at 0021 UTC on 27 July. Usually starts near the top of the hour, but sometimes not`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2148 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees, Dear Glenn: World of Radio, monitoring and confirming the latest for #2148, shorter week family concerns and Summer laziness, WRMI: 9395, 0030, 0044, 0058 (45343), 0059, July 28 UTC [Thu] 9395, train sounds, 0130, 0144, 0158 (45433), 0158, July 28 UTC [Thu] (Lemke, Richard -AB) Good listening, Richard, July 28, 2022``

Also confirmed UT Thu July 28 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S7/9+10 into Maryland SDR.

Also confirmed UT Thu July 28 at 0146 the 0130 on WRMI 9395, S8/9+10 direct; and 5010 on but unreadable vs high storm noise level.

New WOR 2149 should be ready for first broadcasts by 0130 UT Friday July 29 on WRMIs 5850, 7730 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9455, July 28 at 1511, this WRMI is back on, S9 but undermodulated with TOMBS. Much louder on // 9395 & 9955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, July 28 at 1510, no signal at all from WLCR on WBCQ, so I can`t measure how inaccurate the frequency be. Not a twit from Allan Weiner since he last implied it was on, July 26. What`s the matter now? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5935, July 28 at 0605, Dead Gene Scott on WWCR has crosstalk from another unID program, but stops or suspends in a few minutes. Checking the other frequency, 4840: TOMBS with continuing crosstalk = double audio feed; not DGS but seems political? I make sure it`s not overload from my locals KCRC/KZLS.

This problem has been ruining WWCR for a while, reported by others. Obviously WWCR staff can`t even stand to listen to, let alone spot-check monitor, their own gospel/political huxters:

``5890 Jul 28 0240 Mix of several voices. It doesn't seem to come from different transmission. Trouble at WWCR Studios? Broadcasting returned to normal at 0302 with only one program being broadcast on the frequency. 73 Jorge Freitas. Feira de Santana, Bahia 12°14´S 38°58´W - Brasil, Tecsun PL-660, XHDATA, Antenna Delta Loop and LW 20 meters``

Ron Howard: ``Thanks, Jorge, for the alert! July 28, heard WWCR (4840), randomly from 0602-0831 UT. Double audio feed the whole time; one with Brother Stair and the other the "Power Hour" program; at times both about equal strength.

Heard two audio feeds for somewhat less than a week before the problem was fixed. Ron (California) - posted to WOR iog on July 6:

"BTW - Very unique WWCR (4840) reception today from 0705 to 0930 UT; double audio feeds; one with Brother Stair and the other UNID, in English." Ron, California``

Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria: ``Also double audio feed on 3215 WWCR-1 until 0500 UT this morning, one with Brother Stair and second is the other gospel huxter`` -- after which 3215 & 5890 close down weekdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15555-USB, July 28 at 1508, no signal from WJHR -- nor have I run across this memorial to another dead gospel huxter in quite some time in random bandscans. Wonder if on air at all anymore. When did anyone last log it? Never has been anywhere near licensed 50 kW power, and at awkward distance may not propagate unless sporadic-E boosted (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (101.1 FM), July 28 circa 1530 UT, on KSFR Santa Fe NM webcast, DJ Susan Ohari mentions that their main transmitter was hit by lightning about 4 am [10 UT], so is now on alternative transmitter reducing/changing coverage. But stream continues. I always try to listen to her `Beyond Borders` world music show Thursdays at 1505-1800 UT. Don`t be put off by her halting style of speaking: she plays some great music!

https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KSFR&service=FM

coverage map shows site is just west of Los Álamos, so that SF itself is barely within the `local` contour, while the `fringe` contour goes right thru Albuquerque. Taos is on the outskirts oppositely.

Pattern is slightly direxional skewed to favor SF to the ESE. https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KSFR&service=FM

But FCC FM Query shows a different pattern, circular except pulled in at 190 degrees SSW to only 49%, disfavoring ABQ, and also reduced from 160 to 220 degrees.

City of License, however, as always in legal IDs, is White Rock, which
is between SF and LA. Radio-Locator.com shows:
``Effective Radiated Power 2900 Watts
Height above Avg. Terrain 538 meters (1765 feet)
Height above Ground Level 50 meters (164 feet)
Height above Sea Level 3092 meters (10144 feet)
Antenna Pattern Directional
Transmitter Location 35° 53' 09" N, 106° 23' 15" W``

But their aux facility is at FCC FM Query:
``35° 40' 43.10" N Latitude
105° 59' 29.50" W Longitude (NAD 83)
Use NAD83 for FM filings in LMS. 35.678639 -105.991528
Previous NAD27 coordinates: 35° 40' 43" 105° 59' 27.5"

Polarization: Horizontal Vertical
Effective Radiated Power (ERP): 3. 3. kW ERP
Antenna radiation center Height Above Average Terrain: 20. 20. meters
Antenna radiation Center Height Above Mean Sea Level: 2142. 2142. m
Antenna radiation center Height Above Ground Level: 52.3 52.3 meters
Non-Directional``

Map for that shows location just west of SF, such that SF and WR are within only contour shown, 60 dBu but not LA. Maybe that was location when it was on original 90.7; later swapped with a gospel huxter evidently to their mutual advantage. History about:

``7/31/2007: KSFR starts to simulcast from transmitters on West Alameda (90.7 MHz) and Pajarito Mountain (101.1 MHz). 8/6/2008: KSFR’s simulcast ends and it starts broadcasting exclusively from Pajarito Mtn. on 101.1 MHz``

1608, says power is back to main transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, July 28 at 0612, JBA carrier, maybe R. Vanuatu? Soon disappears so probably not, rather a ham. RV has been AWOL from all known frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

ANNIVERSARIO EMITTENTI
Radio Luz y Alegria, Brasile 1160 Khz (1957)
Radio Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Santa Fè, Argentina (1928)

Glenn Hauser logs July 26-27, 2022 really

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Wednesday July 27 at 1450, no signal yet from LRA36 into Argentine remote, and I`m busy until next check 1529 when it`s in very well peaking S5/S9 with music; 1530 ID as Radio Arcángel San Gabriel, omitting Nacional; YLs send saludos; 1532 This Week in History such as a US atomic explosion on July 25, 1946? 1542 interview on phone with a guy at Base Alcala, I had not heard of before. Web research leads to a Land Army of Spain operation with the University of Alcala on Deception Island. They are stressing Alcála on the middle-a instead of final-á as should be proper, until 1600. Chopped off air abruptly at 1601*. I let it run until 1630, hearing only some weak but very repetitive clicking (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 9664v, July 27 at 0604, no signal from RVM. There is JBA carrier slightly below 9675, unlikely it, too weak: 9674.976. Only scheduled is CNR1 Beijing 572 site, but not expected to be that far off 9675 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MADAGASCAR. 13709.949V, July 27 at 2033, S6/S8, Arabic wavering slightly and certainly off frequency. This hour is WCB MWV, while Sa`udi Arabia is also skewed from 13710 until 1757. MWV becoming reliable in offfrequenciness (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6920- AM, slightly on minus side, July 27 at 0623 rock music S7/S8, 0633 announcement sounds like Radio Christian -- something, but no such music; deep fades but S9+10 peaks. I undoze at 0722 for another ID like that. Nothing reported this late in HFU, altho Corn Desert Outpost was on 6920 USB earlier until 0210; but this i s probably it from 4 nights earlier: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,99846.0.html

``Shortwave_listener British Columbia, Canada:
Radio Pushka 6920 AM 0545 UTC 23 Jul 2022 « on: July 23, 2022, 0549 UTC »
Exact frequency is 6919.96 kHz. S9 with the KPH KiwiSDR in California. Extremely weak carrier present at my QTH. This station has been going non-stop since July 7. 0545 UTC-Music, 0549 UTC-Station ID.`` It`s Russian-ethnic, Pushka meaning gun or rifle (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, another alternate weekday July 27 at 2200, another missing token English broadcast from REE without explanation or apology. S9+5/15 into Maryland SDR. Instead another episode in Castilian of `Canciones Ténebres`, this one about Cuba. Something`s missing from Madrid (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830.021, July 27 at 2256 tune-in, not too late for VOT; if IS still playing this late after English, there will be German IDs twice a minute, and so there are; 2300 IS and sign-on imaginary German broadcast which is scheduled to SW air only at two much earlier hours, one of them on 9840 as announced, but German now supposedly only on webcast/satellite/program feed line. S9+35/45 with some hum; sleepyrator finally wakes up and shuts it off at 2307.5* Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 27 at 0503, UR1 via WRMI still hasn`t started English `Ukraine: Security Issue`. Find it here instead: http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_26_07_22.mp3 What else? More Russian attax. Some fired from Caspian Sea. 48 Russian soldiers eliminated in one operation. T-shirt map includes American Alyaska in Russia (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2148 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees. Dear Glenn: World of Radio, monitoring and confirming the latest for #2148, shorter week family concerns and Summer laziness, WRMI:

Good listening, Richard, July 27, 2022``

Confirmed Tue July 26 at 2230 on WRMI 9955, S8 into Maryland SDR, 2255 atop Cuban jamming but it ramps up to overcome before 2259 prior to R. Libertad.

Also confirmed Tue July 26 at 2338 the 2330 on WRMI 9395, which is undermodulated; meanwhile notice that 9455 is OFF.

Also confirmed Wed July 27 from 2100:19.5 on WBCQ 7489.930, exact timing correlated with WWV 10000 via same Maryland remote. Next:

Radio Atalaya Belo Horizonte, Brasile 950 Khz (1977)
North Sound Radio , Gran Bretagna 1035 Khz (1981)

Glenn Hauser logs July 26-27, 2022

** BRAZIL. 9664.101V, July 26 at 0631, RVM now drifting downward, almost minus one kHz from nominal 9665, S7/S9 with praise music, usual VG modulation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15230, July 26 at 1450, RHC Spanish is S9/+10 but just barely modulated, while // 15140 is merely undermodulated. 26 de julio: time for my annual salute to The Revolution with my parody motto: ``Patria o Suerte, ¡Pensaremos!`` I am still awaiting photographic evidence of this being scrawled on any public surface inside Cuba.

For those who don`t get it, instead of ``Fatherland or Death, We Shall Overcome``, I refer to the millions of Cubans who have or are considering fleeing the country: ``Fatherland or Fortune, We`ll Think About It``, as many have prospered in Florida, or at least attained Freedom (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, July 25 at 2206, R. Cairo, S9+30/40 into UTwente, with huge humwhine over distorted English. Something`s always egregious in Egypt.

9440, July 26 at 2119 and still 2145, even worse, S9+35/45 into UTwente with big humwhine, only occasional modulation spikes on and off, totally unusable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, July 26 at quick check 1525, Voice of Martyrs Korea, secret site maybe Taiwan, S7/S9 into UTwente, still in English not Dhivehi; has huge second-adjacent QRM splash from 11610 in American English which means it must be CRI: yes, 500 kW, 269 degrees from Kashgar, EAST TURKISTAN, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Monday July 25 at 2200, REE again token English-less, like it was on Friday; instead continues in Castilian with feature about Mexican corrida music. Ken Zichi confirms there was English last week on Mon & Wed July 18 & 20 but not Friday. We hope it`s just a summer vacation, but how about telling us what`s up? At

https://www.rtve.es/play/audios/emision-en-ingles/ as of July 25, last podcast dated 16/07 and says:

``English Language Broadcast --- Justin Coe y Amy Margaret Egan Lunes, miércoles y viernes a las 22.00 horas UTC, martes, jueves y sábado a las 02.00 horas reemisión

The English Language Broadcast of Radio Exterior de España has been on the air since 1944. Our daily [sic] broadcasts seek to inform listeners about goings-on in Spain, as well as offer a Spanish perspective on world events. News, sports and weather, presented live, are followed on weekdays by a variety of different programs on subjects ranging from art and culture to history, politics, and the latest trends. These programs can be heard again at the weekend.``

The 0200 repeat must be from the distant past, let alone weekend repeats on SW. The podcasts typically run over 30 minutes, so presumably are original, then edited down for SW. But has it all been bcanceled??? Would anyone who has had direct personal contact with Justin or Amy, ask them what`s going off? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830.001, July 25 at 2213, VOT English is on today, S9+35/45 into UTwente, with loud hum but tolerable, new frequency ex-9830.021 so a different transmitter than usual? Concluding `Review of the Tuerkiyeish Press` at 2215 to multi-lingual ID reel filler, which was recently redone with different background music. 2217 other music; 2221 ``Voice of Tuerkiye, always by your side`` -- what does that really mean? 2222 song, 2225 `Feeling Supreme` theme and 2226 YL with natural remedies for arthralgia = joint pain, about a dozen, starting with: massage, ginger, swimming, oil, sycamore leaves, turmeric, pineapple [std. disclaimer], until 2231 as I turn my attention to NBC Nightly [sic] News; did perceive carrier drop at 2257* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 26 at 0500-0506, UR1 via WRMI, `Ukraine: Security Issue` for July 25 = day 152 of Putin`s war, starting with more shelling of Kharkiv, killing civilians (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. VOA`s Polygraph.info --- Just heard this referenced on Flashpoint: Ukraine, July 26 circa 1940 on WRMI 15770:

** U S A. 5072.1 & 5097.9, July 26 at 0637, spurs from 5085 WTWW are JBA carriers vs high storm noise level, so not eliminated tho sometimes inaudible; you never know whether will be on this late (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Tony Blackburn and Johnnie Walker to join Absolute Radio for one day celebration of radio pirates

On the radio
July 26, 2022

Absolute Radio Pirates will celebrate the music and personalities of the pirate radio stations of the 60s with a one day take over from Absolute Radio 60s on the 12 August from 10am-4pm.
The special broadcast will mark the 55th anniversary of the Marine Offences Act which made it illegal for any British subject to have anything to do with a pirate radio station – whether it be presenting on air, a crew member on board, being an advertiser, promoting the stations, or supplying them with music.

The pirate radio stations closed down on 14 August 1967, to avoid breaking the law, although Radio Caroline continued to broadcast.

Welcoming a number of well-known presenters and archive content, the pop-up station will feature a line-up including Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker, Leona Graham, Shaun Keaveny, along with archive broadcasts from the likes of Kenny Everett and Tommy Vance.

Tony Blackburn talks about his love of Wonderful Radio London. Tony presented the first soul music programme in the UK and developed the Fabulous 40 format which combines the best new music with greatest hits. He will tell tales of climbing masts and doing aerial repairs so he could broadcast.

Johnnie Walker chats about falling in love with pirate radio while working as a car salesman in Birmingham. There’ll be archive content from when he remained on air after the ban came into force at midnight on the 15 August 1967.

Listeners will also hear archive broadcasts of Kenny Everett and his chaotic reports from touring with The Beatles in 1966 alongside Tommy Vance’s final Fabulous 40 from Sunday 6 August 1967.

In 1966, a feud over money between two rival fort-based pirate stations – Radio Atlanta and Radio City, resulted in the murder of Radio City’s owner Reg Calvert. Susan Calvert joins the station to talk about the life of her dad – and how his passion for music took him on a journey into the world of the pirates.

Leona Graham is joined by her dad to talk about their love of music radio which all started with the DJs on the pirate ships.

Radio historian David Lloyd will share a detailed history lesson, to show the evolution of music radio from the 1950s to the present day.

Shaun Keaveny shares his love of music and broadcasting – and the impact and legacy of the pirate radio stations.

Jordan and Perri from KISS Breakfast will talk about continuing the pirate traditions on KISS FM.

Tim Blackmore – the man who helped to launch Radio One before becoming part of Britain’s first land-based commercial music station, Capital in London – shares what he learned from listening to Radio London and how it influenced his 50 year career in radio.

Zeb Soanes will be reading news bulletins from the age of the Pirates – 1964-1967.

Absolute Radio Content Director Paul Sylvester said: “Modern radio wouldn’t exist without these titans of broadcasting who introduced British audiences to the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin. We’re proud to pay tribute in a typically unique Absolute Radio way, disrupting the airwaves with an incredible soundtrack, legendary voices, compelling archive and the recreation of vintage news bulletins and ad-breaks. If you loved Absolute Radio 40s, well, we’ve fast-forwarded a couple of decades for another appointment-to-listen day of radio.”

Executive Producer Jon Holmes added: “An amazing day celebrating the incredible pirate radio stations that, ironically, changed the audio landscape of the UK from the (air)waves of the North Sea. If you like radio, music, music radio, or people doing what they love sticking two salty fingers up to The Man, then prepare to board Absolute Radio Pirates.” (ontheradio.co.uk via Mike Terry)

Glenn Hauser logs July 23-24-25, 2022

** CANADA [and non]. Replies to my July 23 USA and non FM DX report:

```On Sun, Jul 24, 2022 at 06:57 PM, Glenn Hauser wrote: ``92.9 at 0022, CCI to above MT from ``Channel 4 Weather Centre``, likely referring to CFCN-TV Calgary, really RF 29 now.``
I don't think "Channel 4 Weather Centre" has a Calgary connection. CFCN, like practically all Canadian television stations, no longer uses its call letters or channel number to identify itself, which is a real shame IMHO. Since the late '00s, CFCN advertises itself as CTV Calgary. The news is CTV News Calgary and its weather forecasts are referred to as Skywatch Weather.
``92.1 at 0023, Calgary ads, for -- Coast, mortgages; country CCI; 0025 traffic report about Deerfoot? Trail, ``CJ-92, text 92-92-92; phone = Calgary (403) 249-CJ92: CJAY-FM 92.1 CALGARY AB CAN ROCK C-JAY 100.0 kW 298.5 m --- 2075 km = 1289 mi``
Deerfoot Trail is correct — it's the city's primary north-south freeway. 73, Ricky Leong, Calgary, Alberta, Canada```
The Channel 4 reference must then have been CCI about a US station. The 92.9s elsewhen were in MT and WA. Spokane has a virtual 4, KXLY. Searching on `Channel 4 Weather Center`` gets nowhere, and then there is KXLF in Butte, not the 92.9 city but Great Falls. Informal names for TV weather shops are too generic; and it`s even harder to match up online which radio stations have deals with which TV stations for weather info -- often unrelated businesses. This is certainly the case in OKC, Tulsa.
``Hi Glenn, On 7/24/2022 6:57 PM, 'Glenn Hauser' via WTFDA wrote: 94.5 at 0013, country; 0016, text 548-82-88, `Today`s country, Chad? 94-5`
This one would be "Today's country, Chat (i.e. CHAT), my local, before Great Falls took over. I experienced the same opening, mostly OK and TX stations, though also a few from KS, MO, AR, NM. It's been a busy weekend, so haven't finished going over everything yet. A mixture here of live listening on the truck radio, and some recording on the ELAD. 73, Nigel Pimblett, Dunmore, AB``
Tnx, Nigel and Ricky. Of course later on July 23 in a separate opening at 1801 I had a stand-alone log of CHAT 94.5 Medicine Hat (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** EUROPE. 6185.040, July 24 at 1958, pirate Free Radio Service Holland with publicized broadcast, rock, mentions YouTube, DJ in Dutch, S7/S8 into UTwente, 1959 English ID, 2000 ``Dave Scott`s Radio Waves on FRS Holland``. Nominal span was 19-21 UT. ACI from 6180, German weather station. Unfortunately at 20-22 UT Sundays I like to listen to `Wind & Rhythm` band music, and `Feminine Fusion`, classical music composed and/or performed by women, on KUCO in $tereo. Two other FRSH frequencies turned out to be flexible as many others reported, 7700 and 5800 up or down to avoid QRM. More such programming planned next two Sundays, except no 6185 on July 31 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** FRANCE. 13735, July 25 at 1502, marine weather info in French, S5/S7 into Maryland with deep fades; as another ``Mini-Trans-At`` yacht race is underway from France to Azores, prompting daily broadcasts via Issoudun at 1500-1530 for the racers. Per HFCC registrations effective from July 19. Expect there will be a second leg later, truly T-A, from Azores to Caribbean.
Same non-professional announcer switches to English at 1511, citing conditions as of 12 UTC at certain geo coordinates. At 1520 starts mixing French and English. It seems to me a visual display, e.g. fax would be much more usable aboardyachts, but maybe they don`t have fancy receiving equipment. Chopped off abruptly at 1530* while still speaking. Also scheduled on 5975, unchecked.
Dave Kenny reports to BDXC-UK: ``This transmission is listed in HFCC from 19 July until 16 August: http://hfcc.org/data/schedbybrc.php?seas=A22&broadc=TDF
HFCC also lists a schedule of "Sailor DRM tests" taking place until 30 September:
