BBC Proms on the BBC World Service

UK (non). BBC World Service is airing some highlights from this years BBC Proms Season. Apologies for late notice, as I've only just spotted it it in the schedules.

Saturdays 30 July, 6, 13, 20 and 27 August at 1806 (to Middle East): 6195-sla, 12025-sng

Saturdays 30 July, 6, 13, 20 and 27 August at 1906 (to Africa):6155-sao, 6195-dha, 7265-mdc, 7445-mdc, 11810-wof, 12095-asc

Sundays 31 July, 7, 14, 21 and 28 August at 1106 (to Asia): 6195-sng, 9410-sng, 11945-sng

Programmes:

30/31 July: Music for Royal Occasions

In the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Singers present a celebration of music and royalty in all its splendour: from the music of the Tudor court to the 21st century, by way of Handel’s majestic Coronation Anthem, Elgar's ever-popular Pomp and Circumstance March, choral music by the current Master of the Queen’s Music Judith Weir and a specially commissioned new work by Cheryl Frances-Hoad.

6/7 August: Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra

The Proms welcomes the newly formed Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra who come to London as part of a tour of Europe and the USA. The orchestra, led by the Canadian-born conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, is composed of Ukrainian players from a dozen orchestras in both their besieged country and elsewhere in Europe. They will be joined by two leading Ukrainian soloists for a concert that showcases the artistry and resilience of Ukrainian musicians. The concert programme reflects the current situation through 19th-century works: Russian occupation of Poland prevented Chopin from returning to his homeland and Beethoven’s Fidelio celebrates the triumph of love and freedom over injustice.

13/14 August: Gaming Prom

This year, the Proms dips its toes for the first time into the vast ocean that is video games music. Although written originally for the small screen, games music has long been a success in the concert hall too. 1990s classics from the Japanese masters of the form Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu regularly sell out large venues, Austin Wintory’s Grammy-nominated Journey has now become a fully-fledged symphonic poem as has Hildur Guðnadóttir’s and Sam Slater’s recent score for Battlefield 2042. The selection of games music for this Prom is curated by the young British conductor Robert Ames noted for his pursuit of fruitful exchanges between the classical tradition and contemporary music.

The programmes to be broadcast 20/21 and 27/28 August have not yet been announced.

Glenn Hauser logs July 31, 2022

** CANADA. 284 MCW kHz, July 31 at 0635 UT, dash and QD, 500-watt ND beacon at The Pas, Manitoba, is JBA vs storm and line noise levels. Pleased to hear it but nothing else from Canada, nor any USA beyond OK. 1956 km = 1215 statute miles (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11670, July 31 at 0621, RHC English S7/S9 but very suptorted, barely recognizable // big 6165, only other English still on air, while 5040 remains but in Spanish. 11670 is supposed to be in Spanish only and much earlier in evening. From time to time it shows like this in English. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13700, Sunday July 31 at 1501, RHC is still on as weekly Esperanto opens, but cut off by 1503 as meanwhile I have retuned to 11760 where sign-on continues to allege this frequency only, ignorant of weaker // 15140, and even weaker carrier still on 15230 by 1505. Also stuck on winter timings as if at 1600 UT instead of 1500, as well as 0800 on 6100 instead of 0700 when it`s usually missing anyway; and 2330 or was it 2230 on 15730. Io ĉiam misas ĉe RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 13628 & 13772 approx., July 31 at 1430, RHC spurblobs out of 13700 AM transmitter. F# tone JBA but no readable program modulation. Lower one louder than upper one. By 1457 have shifted slightly to peak circa 13629 & 13771. 13629 has het from 13630 broadcaster, listed as from 1500, CRI English via Urumqi, East Turkistan, land of imperialist ChiCom re-education, slave labor, even genocide against Uyghurs and other Moslems. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EUROPE. 6184.991, via UTwente, July 31 at 1901, ``Radio Classic Sunday`` several IDs in English, rock, Dutch announcements. This is why FRSH said it would not be on 6185 this week, but last and next week.

Messy situation as presumed FRSH is on 7700.089 at S8/S9, 1907 giving address in Netherlands; should be // 5800 but unseems, and then 1908 two signals are equally colliding; so someone will have to shift off like last Sunday. No, 1923 recheck, still head-to-head. Manuel Méndez says FRSH is on 5790.3, so must be *two others* on 5800. At 1946, UTWente lox onto music on 5790.215.

Anyhow, it`s all rock music, and I would rather listen to `With Heart & Voice` in $tereo on WYSU HD2 stream as usual this hour on Sundays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 515 MCW kHz, July 31 at 1428 UT, PN, 25-watt ND beacon at PoNca City, is off. Had been reliably on for weeks and audible day and night as strongest beacon, even moreso than 341 EI EnId, 350 RG OKC which are reconfirmed on now; also Kansans 332 IC wIChita, 395 CA 25 watts at Newton/Harvs are JBA; and 255 SW StillWater OK is still off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), July 31 at 0500, missed checking UR1 via WRMI for `Ukraine: Security Issue` in English so monitored later via: http://ukr.radio/images/ckeditor/files/files/ENG_NEWS_30_07_22.mp3 including: Russia should be declared a sponsor of terrorism, for mass murder of POWs. Operation to rescue children in Donetsk region. Missile destroys school in Kharkiv. Most Ukrainians in occupied areas refuse to receive Russian passports prior to sham referendum. Pope Francis still plans to visit Ukraine (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2149 monitoring: confirmed UT Sunday July 31 at 0331 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, Wentzville MO, about 17 minutes into so started circa 0314; S9+20 vs storm noise level, but quite readable direct, where my receiver is a lot better than the closest active KiwiSDRs in TN, IL, IA, barely detecting a carrier.

Missed checking Sunday July 31 at 1330v on WMRI Europe via Channel 292, Germany, 9670; anyone hear it? Next:

Larry Will explains: ``Hi Glenn, WBCQ tells me that the superstition's R-420 transmitter is online, but part of the driver circuit has failed and is in Continental's hands for rebuilding and/or replacement. In the meantime they are using an alternative driver, which explains the slight frequency offset you've observed these past few weeks. If I learn anything else about the operation, I'll let you know. ** VANUATU. 11835, July 31 at 0620, I can tell RV is on with music on 3 x 3945, S7/S9 noisy. Ron Howard was hearing it a lot better until 0820, says topix included 42nd Independence Day July 30, World Hepatitis Day July 28 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Shortwave Australia replies

The idea with this station is to cover South East Australia, specifically around 500km around Bendigo Victoria Australia. This gives good coverage with small portable radios on the in built whip and would cover Melbourne, Adelaide and Southern New South Wales. I am using antennas set up for a NVIS shower service so it is not optimal for long distance DX although at times the signal may reach you. Also i am only running 200w on 4835 and 100w on 2310,i may increase this a bit but power bills prohibit the use of more than a few hundred watts. Also as fading is often 20 to 30 db an increase that would make a difference would require a massive increase in power. The core times for transmission is from 0500 to 1000 UTC although i could be on at any time and if conditions are good past 1000 UTC (8pm local) i often stay on till much latter. With the low power the service to the coverage area is very good between 1 hour before sunset to generally a couple of hours after. The core transmission times will change with the seasons. As i have only been on this property for a few months and setting things up technically i have not produced a web site or FB page for the station yet but it will come but if you like you could except this email as a QSL card for your reception. When the Australian Broadcasting Corporation operated these frequency's with 50kw from Alice Springs i heard them on the west coast of the USA on a sangen with a few feet of wire. This is not the New Radio Australia as when the Australian Broadcasting Corporation who ran it got out of shortwave the licences passed on to private individuals who had big ideas but the interest faded and most have been silent but i wanted to put some thing up on shortwave and now have the space to do it and negotiated to get the frequency's transferd to me. It is early days yet but the station will evolve over time. Shortwave Australia is not an official name just something i made up. The licences apart from an identification number don't actually have a callsign.

SPINTEROMETRO SEMPLICE O A PALLINA

Back to Basic ''MFJ - 8100'' World Band Receiver

5 gamme : A (3,5- 4,3 Mhz.) B (5,85 - 7,40 Mhz.) C (9,5 - 12 Mhz.) D (13,2 - 16,4 Mhz.) E (17,5-22 Mhz.)

Glenn Hauser logs July 30-31, 2022

** ALASKA. 18130 USB, July 30 at 2310, K7K on Kiska Island in the Aleutians, calling CQ, then making a bunch of contacts. This is a special event I had been seeking day and night on publicized phone frequencies, nominally: 3790, 7090/7240, 14260, 18130, 21260, 24955, 28485 kHz. No luck until now directedly or remotedly; on the KFS Half Moon Bay CA remote with omni antenna. QRX at 2320, heard again at 2330 with W3LAS; UT July 31 at 0000 another contact says he is going to 18116, unchecked.

July 31 is the final day for this expedition, so hurry up. Tnx to Chuck Gessner for tip on the WOR iogroup. Lots more interesting info, maps, wildlife at their website. https://www.qrz.com/db/K7K

Chuck reported: ``A group of radio amateurs is currently operating, using the amateur radio callsign K7K, from the Aleutian Islands, specifically Kiska Island, Alaska from July 25th to the 31st.

It is a special event operation to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the WW2 Battle Of The Aleutians. They are operating on amateur radio frequencies in the 3.5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, and 50 MHz bands. See their website for specific frequencies.

Kiska Island is part of the Aleutian Islands WWII National Monument and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge

They are using CW, SSB, and digital FT8 modes. They will also be using the amateur radio call sign KL7RRC during the Islands On The Air contest this weekend`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Saturday July 30 started monitoring Buenos Aires area SDR circa 1445, but no LRA36 until abrupt cut-on at *1507 during song; 1509 sign-on, multilingual including English, with three different versions of name: Radio San Gabriel; Radio Arcángel San Gabriel, and finally, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel; staff list, ``Nacional, La Radio Pública``; 1511 Antártida themesong, maybe should be called Base Esperanza song, also mentions Marambio. Wish we could get the complete and correct lyrix/letra, let alone title. 1514 historical items concerning something in 1905; first Catholic mass on the continent in 1946y. 1518 a song; 1523 live greetings by the YLs [live, that is on original Wednesday airing], as 13th program in the 2022 series of ``Esperanza Audaz, bajo el cielo más austral``; ``muy buenos días`` altho at 15Z it`s noon local time. In the second week of vacations, apparently referring to local school #38. Any of the 4-YL crew brought own kids if XYLs? Winds have hit 141 km/h. 1530 phone numbers and other contact info but chopped off air abruptly at 1531:20*, never to return. Thruout there has been lite QRM from series of rapid clix, now in the clear, two different pitches alternating, as if talking to each other. Gary Pence, Dallas, was listening via same remote and could also detect RNASG into Half Moon Bay CA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 27184.47, July 30 at 2045 and still 2220 UT, the Enid CBer is beeping continuously instead of relaying one broadcast station or another (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 97.3, July 30 at 1755 UT on caradio, CCI including ``Mother Angelica will be taking calls...``, [A neat trick since she died on March 27, 2016 --- and as ``more Catholic than the Pope`` must not be on track for beatfication by the current regime]; 1757 EWTN and Global Catholic Radio mentioned. Doubt it`s Es; we are in unseasonably cool and wet spell, with fringe tropo up. WTFDA FMDB gets no 97.3 hits on EWTN or Eternal! But it`s probably nearby:

KKNG-FM 97.3 BLANCHARD OK RELIGIOUS TEACHING 1.0 kW 244.0 m 35-10-38 97-36-10 2BC0 Visit us at WWW.OKCR.ORG

Not a hint that this one is Catholic until going to website: OKLAHOMA CATHOLIC RADIO, ARCHDIOCESE OF OKC including: https://okcr.org/schedule Sat noon to 1 pm: `The Church Alive`, not labeled as an EWTN program, but several others are; and admittedly an EWTN affiliate.

This raises a question about my presumed log of KNEH-LP 97.3 Hélena MT on July 23 during a big sporadic E opening with lots of other Montana stations; based on it also being Catholic.

Blanchard is beyond OKC, SW of Norman, 141 km = 88 miles.

Anyhow, the OKCR network in OK, with no info about which are real stations, which LP, or translators:

``FIND YOUR LOCAL STATION

BTW, KKNG was formerly the call on 92.5 OKC with beautiful music format ``King``, to go with 95.5 Tulsa KWEN ``Queen``, still called but not so branded, while 92.5 became KOMA ex-1520.

I was hearing it while driving around Enid; even before I pull into the garage KKNG is losing out by 1759 to a country station; 1803 ad with 620 area code and Dodge City mention; 1808 ``Continuous Country, Q97``:

KKJQ 97.3 GARDEN CITY KS COUNTRY Q 97 FM 100.0 kW 244.0 m KKJQ THE DAWG --- 317 km = 197 mi.

Later I`m back in the garaged car hoping that an Es FM DX opening east of here will spread a little further, but at 0100 UT July 31, nothing more unusual than another fringe Kansan overtaking Okie KOKC translator, ID as ``KWKN, Hayes, your new home for news, talk and sports``, so isn`t the `Cowboy` branding passé?:

KWKN 95.3 WAKEENEY KS TALK/SPORTS 95.3 THE COWBOY 100.0 kW 158.0 m --- 341 km = 212 miles, west of Hayes.

Well south of Hayes, KKDT Burdett on 93.5, tho only 95 kW is a regular on the fringe, just faded up from nothing to sufficient --- 248 km = 154 miles (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. (7730), July 30 at 0500+, missed monitoring WRMI for today`s `Ukraine: Security Issue`; so I listen later on its website, for July 29 = Day 156 of Putin`s war, including: Russian soldier torturing POW caught on video; Odesa ready to ship grain, and Istanbul ready to receive it. Lasted over 7 minutes (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2149 monitoring: confirmed UT Saturday July 30 at 0400 on WBCQ Radio Angela, 5130, S7/S9+10 with storm crashes into Maryland SDR minus 28 Hz = 5129.972. Notice that I misspelt Ourgla, Algeria site as ORUGLA - well, better than making it QURGLA as I sometimes see it.

Also confirmed Saturday July 30 at 1600 on WRN for North America webcast. Is anyone listening direct from International Vacuum?

Unable to check Sat July 30 at 1930v on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, since nearby SDR is offline. Nor can I hear it on the closest others, in IL, IA, MO, KS; in the daytime. Did anyone hear it? Better luck tonight. Anyhow repeated 1930 on WRN webcast.

Confirmed UT Sunday July 31 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S8/S9 with high storm noise level direct; at 0044, S8/9+5 and noisy into Maryland. Next:

** VANUATU. 11835, July 30 at 0628, RV is on at S4-S6, noisy, 3 x 3945. This becomes ``routine`` and not always logged until it`s missing again, leaving us unsure when it were last heard. But such an harmonic is really never routine (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

The information in this Reuters article isn't directly related to radio, but the subject matter might explain the more noticeable absence of that country's shortwave stations from time to time. A whole bunch of frequencies were dark last night, for example.

Have a good weekend and...have fun listening to us next Sunday!

FRS Summer Splash part 2

Next Sunday July 31st sees part 2 of FRS' 2nd edition of the Summer Splash. Similar to last Sunday programmes will run from 19- 21 UTC/ 21- 23 CEST.
For latest news about frequencies please check this website! Last Sunday we had to move twice. As 5800 was not available we were forced to switch to 5810. Then we moved to 5790 due to an annoying whistle. On 7700 there was a strong buzz with wide splattering. Therefore we used 7715 instead.

Our intention is to start on 7700//5800 but remember we might switch to adjacent channels if the situation occurs that a frequency cannot be used. Last but not least: we won't be using 6185 but are happy to announce instead the use of 3940 kHz. 6185 will again be used during part 3 of our Summer Splash on August 7th. Good listening!
Thanks to all of you for the many reports we received so far.

Propagation de K7RA

ARRL

Propagation Forecast Bulletin 30 ARLP030
From Tad Cook, K7RA
Seattle, WA July 29, 2022
To all radio amateurs

Although images of the sun this reporting week, July 21 to 27,
showed plenty of sunspots, only two new spots emerged, one on July
21, and another on July 25.

Another new sunspot appeared on July 28, but the sunspot number
declined to 50 from 52 the day before.

Average daily sunspot number declined from 137.3 to 91.1, and
average daily solar flux softened by 50 points to 107.6.

The headline on spaceweather.com on July 28 said, "Quiet Sun."

Geomagnetic indicators began this reporting week fairly active, with
planetary A index at 22, then it quickly quieted down to an average
of 11.7 for the week, higher than the 9.4 average reported last
week. Average middle-latitude A index increased from 9 to 10.4.

A look back a year ago shows this cycle is progressing nicely. In
ARLP030 in 2021 average daily sunspot number was just 48.9, and
average daily solar flux only 81.3.

A year prior the average daily sunspot number in 2020 was just 3.1!
That is because there were five days with no sunspots, then two days
with a sunspot number of only 11, which is the minimum non-zero
sunspot number.

A sunspot number of 11 does not mean 11 sunspots. It means there
was just 1 sunspot group (which counts for 10 points) and one
sunspot in that group, counting for 1, producing a total of 11,
because of the arcane historical method of counting sunspots.

Predicted solar flux shows it peaking at 130 on August 11.

Predicted flux is 92 on July 29 to 31, 90 on August 1, 88 on August
2 to 4, 92 on August 5, 115 on August 6, 113 on August 7 and 8, then
120, 125, 130 and 125 on August 9 to 12, 120 on August 13 to 15, 118
on August 16 and 17, then 114 and 110 on August 18 and 19, 108 on
August 20 and 21, then 106 and 102 on August 22 and 23, 100 on
August 24 to 27, 108 on August 28 and 29, 110 on August 30 and 31,
115 on September 1 and 2, and 113 on September 3 and 4. Solar flux
peaks again at 130 on September 7.

Predicted planetary A index is 8 and 12 on July 29 and 30, 8 on July
31 and August 1, 5 on August 2, 8 on August 3 and 4, 5 on August 5
to 10, 8 on August 11 and 12, 5 on August 13 to 16, 22 on August 17,
15 on August 18 and 19, 8 on August 20 and 21, 5 on August 22 to 25,
10 and 12 on August 26 and 27, 5 on August 28 and 29, 12 and 10 on
August 30 and 31, and 5 on September 1 to 6.

USAF/NOAA Solar Geophysical Activity Report, 2200 UTC on 28 Jul 2022

https://bit.ly/3votD3A

OK1HH wrote on July 28:

"Over the last seven days, solar activity has been steadily
decreasing. From some class C flares to the 'almost no chance of
flares' announcement today. But we observed some interesting
anomalies. For example, geomagnetic disturbance on July 21 caused
two improvements in ionospheric shortwave propagation conditions
around 1400 and 1930 UTC.

A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on July 23rd at 0259 UTC. The
impact triggered a G1-class geomagnetic storm and in the early hours
of the morning UTC, 6-meter band users were able to establish a
series of contacts between central Europe and the US East Coast.

The proton density in the solar wind, which suddenly rose on 27 July
between 2000 and 2100 UTC, was accompanied by a significant
improvement in shortwave propagation between Europe and the
Caribbean, while closed at the same time the path between Europe and
North America.

A small coronal hole of positive polarity located just to the north
of the solar equator that crossed the central meridian on July 26 is
expected to influence solar wind starting July 29. Geomagnetic
activity will increase again."

"I go out in my kayak once per week to operate QRP. Today,
Thursday, July 28, I set out on Lake Solano (northern CA) not
expecting much action due to a low solar flux (93.4) and predicted
MUF of about 14 MHz.

When I first checked 17m I heard a CW pileup apparently going after
a Swiss station. I had a couple contacts on 17 and 20m. A couple
hours later, I moved from the middle of the lake to the shade of a
tree along the bank (temps were in the high 90s). My loop antenna
was half surrounded by foliage, which I figured would interfere with
my signal. Nonetheless, I gave 17m CW a try again, and contacted
F8IHE almost immediately. All he could copy was my call sign, but
that was enough for me!

Always a surprise."

Glenn Hauser logs July 29-30, 2022

** NORTH AMERICA. 6922.1? USB, July 29 at 2357, music in high storm noise level such that I can`t even be sure of the frequency, but there seems to be a vestigial carrier as above. Music sounds no better or worse tuned to 6923 USB. Maybe same as these on `6920`: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,100060.0.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 27184.4 AM, July 29 at 2344, local Enid CB relay of broadcast station, but unsounds like country 103.1 KOFM as heard for weeks previously, not checked lately; rather, gospel music. Huge het from a spoiler carrier on 27185.5, but can be split by LSB tuning. 2346, auto timecheck for 6:45 and weather forecast, banjo music. Then I search for // on FM radio and find it on 99.9; `Abide With Me` until 2355. So now the source is KVBN-LP now promoted to worldwide SW broadcaster. Own site is on US81 N, same ex-church which used to house KLGB-LP 94.3 which closed down, but antenna tower is still up for 100-watt horizontal-only KVBN (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

** PUERTO RICO. 28315 USB, July 29 at 2337, Spanish QSO almost in the beaconband, mentions KP4WQ in Aguadilla, presumably him rather than his contact: ARRL/FCC lookup: VILLANUEVA, LUIS, KP4WQ, Calle North East 281 A, AGUADILLA, PR 00603. Only one other USB QSO audible on band, English (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, July 29 at 2209, REE has again replaced English with Spanish, on a Friday, another show about Cuban music, not exactly a rarity on SW thanks to FTIOM and RHC. May well be worthwhile program, and I could even understand it, but refuse to listen as long as token English be canceled? Or at least in limbo (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830.021, July 29 at 2210, VOT direct seems almost dead air as received direct, requiring LSB to avoid the RTTY. By 2229 I rate it undermodulated, with whine. At 2247 I switch to UTwente which always gets it much better intercepted on the way to N America, and which displays traditional exact frequency offset. It`s S9+50 with sufficient modulation now. 2251 `Did You Know That?` some town in Tuerkiye produces 80 kilotons of honey; sign off with full English schedule which seems to be correct but jumbled; IS to 2257.5* before we may get into any bonus spurious Germanizing (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. No FM DX lately, Es MUF not making it above 88 MHz to here, so I check for 10m hamband CW beacons at 1/3 the MUF, July 29 at 2335, and find only two:

28289.3, WJ5O/B, Troy AL, the guy really into this with his hugelist at: http://wj5o.net/bcn.htm updated 7 July, 2022. The trouble is, it`s historical going back more than a decade, surely with a lot of chaff which needs to be outweeded.

28217.7, VVV VVV DE K4PAR/B EM83 - with long pauses. Eatonton, Georgia, another one heard many times before (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2149 monitoring: confirmed Friday July 29 from 1815.4 on IRRS SW via Bulgaria 7290 & 14580 into UTwente SDR; and AM Italia, 1323 kHz, but not 918 or 207 kHz, into nearby Noale SDR.

Tuned in at 1800 to find `Feature Story News` in progress on 1323, and 7290 cutting on later a bit before 1801. Spotlite portion at 1803, headlines; 1805 music fill; 1813 birdsongs introducing TUC Radio, now a regular thing at exactly this time, and for only 2 minutes! Chris Hedges starts to interview someone on July 8, till chop to 1815 IRRS ID and 1815.4 WOR. Details: https://tucradio.org/podcasts/newest-podcasts/the-chris-hedges-report-splinterlands-climate-dystopia/

Second harmonic of 7290 Kostinbrod also JB audible on 14580 into UTwente, not always the case. Strangely, both have the same RTTY/FSK warble on the USB side but evitable by LSB tuning. Or by narrowing bandwidth below 1.5 kHz. Checked 3 x 7290 = 21870 just in case, but nothing.

Despite proximity of Noale to Villa Estense, 1323 has plenty storm crashes, and I see on Blitzortung that there is lots of lightning over northern Italy and much of Europe. There is also music and talk CCI from an understation, presumably the 15 kW Romanian station with minority service in German, but which WRTH 2022 did not show at this time. Notable that the IRRS IDs, or NEXUS/IBA/IRRS no longer ask for P-mail to that Milano POBox, which IRRS has otherwise said is no longer valid; rather an e-mail address, such as after WOR at 1844 completed, into music fill.

WOR 2149 also confirmed Friday July 29 at 2050 the 2030 on AM Italia, 1323 only, S9+10/15. Now there is a fast SAH and music CCI from some understation when Romania is presumably off.

Also confirmed UT Saturday July 30 at 0130 on WRMI, checked on several remotes to the NW or NNW which seem to be struggling with undermodulation; best into Maryland with S9+10/20. Next:

** U S A. 7489.91 approx., July 30 at 0000, WBCQ `AAAWWW` opener amid William Tell Overture, AW says humans are not center of everything, just look up: inspired by Webb, so it`s a rerun from a biweek ago. Never mind. Poor in noise direct but I then check PEI SDR where this high a frequency in HNL is JBA on -70/72 Hz = 7489.929, while 5130 minus 24 Hz = 5129.976 is S9+10/15; and 3265+ is NOT on this week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Propagation News – 31 July 2022

We’ve had a week of lower solar flux indices, despite a smoothed sunspot number in the 50s. The sunspots we have had have been relatively small and pretty inconsequential.

The week started off with an SFI of 107, but then declined to 98 by Thursday. The good news is that we have had relatively settled geomagnetic conditions after a wobble at the weekend due to a high-speed solar wind stream.

Other than Sporadic-E events, the maximum usable frequency over 3,000km has struggled to get up above 18 or sometimes 21MHz during daytime. But, as we have said before, night-time MUFs have remained seasonally high, topping 14MHz over a 3,000km path most nights.

Next week, and as we enter August, we can expect more of the same. The solar flux index is predicted to rise slightly to perhaps 115 by next weekend.

But the prediction is also for more unsettled geomagnetic conditions with a maximum Kp index of four this weekend and again later in the week. This is most likely due to high-speed solar wind from coronal holes once again.

So best of luck with the IOTA contest this weekend, which will probably be dominated by operators on 20 metres with occasional Es openings on the higher bands.

VHF and up:

There have been some fleeting signs of the continuing Sporadic-E season, but events are not so commonplace in this second half of the summer. This means being alert to the typical operating windows, which traditionally are early or mid-morning and again late afternoon/early evening. At the heart of these events will usually be a weather feature, such as a jet stream, whose turbulence creates a wave motion in the atmosphere that can cause varying wind flows in the E region some 100km above the weather, and are a big contributor to the formation of Es.

In this coming week, the jet streams are very limited so it’s not looking too favourable for major Es events.

The weather pattern shows lows near the northwest of Britain driving fronts across the north, and at the same time precluding the development of Tropo, since it does not allow the development of high-pressure systems.

However, conditions in the south are a bit more supportive, so there could be occasional Tropo, especially over sea paths around the UK. There is a hint that the second half of the week will see the development of a large high more generally over the UK, so that’s the time for Tropo to shine.

The other modes such as rain scatter are not looking too strong since the frontal cloud bands tend not to be as effective as heavy thundery showers, but it’s always worth checking for aurora and meteor scatter as we move into August and within reach of the broad peak of the Perseids meteor shower.

It’s a good week for EME with positive Moon declination until Tuesday and falling path losses, but we are still more than a week from perigee. 144MHz sky noise is low but slowly increasing all week. (rsgb.org)

Mike Radio and Radio Europe

Please note that Mike Radio is an unlicensed radio station, so it should be listed under 'PIRATES' and not under 'NETHERLANDS'.

Another Dutch station, Radio Europe (often using the slogan 'Radio Jong Europa') has also been broadcasting on shortwave without a license for several months. Currently on 6130 kHz. However, Radio Europa now has a license from the Dutch authorities.

I think, it is remarkable that the HFCC is coordinating frequencies for shortwave pirates (Mike Radio, Studio Denakker and - for several months also Radio Europe).
