Glenn Hauser logs April 30, 2022

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, April 30 at 1450, still no signal from RNASG LRA36 into four Brazil SDRs checked, completing the entire month of April no-shows every Wednesday and Saturday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6165, April 30 at 0608, dead air in English, S9+20. Only other RHC is 6060, but wrong language Spanish with humbuzz. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, April 30 from 1455 I`m listening via Coimbatore, India SDR; carrier on briefly at 1457.5, resuming *1468 to stay, S9+10/20 from secret site. 1500 ``Pastor Eric Foley`` of VOMK Maldives now has a formal sign-on in English, and into start of sermon at much weaker modulation until 1502 cut to the YL in Dhivehi at normal modulation. 1528.5 to music, 1529.7 English sign off just in time and a few seconds gap before *1530.0 Vatican starts Arabic on much weaker signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, April 30 at 0501-0505.7, UR1 via WRMI with English warnews roundup, `Ukraine: Security Issue`; this time with the OM fast-talker. VG into Maryland remote. I cannot recommend these highly enough, to immerse ourselves directly into the Ukrainian point of view; also airing earlier after 0000 UT on 1386 via Lithuania, easily heard via UTwente remote and no doubt many others in Europe, even Russia (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2136 monitoring: confirmed Friday April 29 at 1815 on IRRS SW via BULGARIA 7290, into NW Ireland SDR; and at 1823 JBA on 14580 = 2 x 7290: audible on USB only where there is also RTTY warble, strange; rechecking 7290, it is true AM with LSB and USB and carrier. WOR also on AM Italia 1323 into nearby Noale SDR, but not on 918; but my voice JBA at 1820 on LW 207 kHz, apparently still sporadically experimental!

Had tuned in earlier: 7290 at 1755 with music presumed China; As usual, IRRS transmitter does not cut on air until almost 1801, S9/+15 with `Feature Story News` already in progress; 1803 `FSN Spotlight`; 1805 IRRS ID with Milano PO Box otherwise denied, and `News in Brief from the United Nations`; 1809 sitar? music fill. 1815 WOR also heard past 1830 on 1323 and 7290, so presumably played until finished at 1844.

I was also monitoring 1323 kHz from 1755 when there was talk about Sputnik Radio in the USA, then Jeff White`s voice so it was a fragment of `Wavescan`, chopped off at 1759.

WOR 2136 also confirmed Friday April 29 at 2030 on AM Italia 1323 kHz, S9+10, no signal on 918, and maybe a trace on 207 kHz.

Also confirmed UT Saturday April 30 at 0130 on WRMI 9395, S9+25 into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed UT Saturday April 30 from 0359.8 on Radio Angela via WBCQ 4790, fair into Maryland SDR vs storm crashes; and QRM from those one-second uteblaaps at 0400:01.5, 0403:01.5, so exactly 3:00 minutes apart tonight; interspersed with another one at 0401:41.5, not tracked further but should also be repeated every 3:00 minutes: these noises are not random and therefore must be deliberate.

Also confirmed Saturday April 30 at 1627 the 1600 on WRN North America webcast. Next:

``I have been an on-and-off World of Radio listener since the late 1970’s ... I regret that I have utterly neglected the most valuable and thankfully still enduring radio resource, World of Radio! ... Fortunately, World of Radio is still with us. I am finally doing the right thing and offering a contribution, and plan to do more in the future.``

UNIDENTIFIED. 7555-7585 approx., April 30 at 0550, suspicious noise field surrounding TOMBS on WRMI 7570, which at S9+20 is not strong enough to overcome it on center frequency monitored direct. But noise stops abruptly at 0551, and I soon find it has shifted to 7510-7540. Could be something local? Or out of WRMI transmitter itself? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

RFE/RL Journalist Dies In Russian Missile Strikes On Kyiv

KYIV -- RFE/RL journalist Vira Hyrych has died in Kyiv after a Russian missile strike hit the residential building where she lived in the Ukrainian capital.

Hyrych's body was found early in the morning on April 29 amid the wreckage of the building, which was hit by a Russian missile the night before, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was visiting Kyiv on April 28 as missile strikes hit the capital, including the apartment block.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of our Ukrainian Service staffer Vira Hyrych in Kyiv overnight. We have lost a dear colleague who will be remembered for her professionalism and dedication to our mission," RFE/RL President Jamie Fly said in a statement.

"We are shocked and angered by the senseless nature of her death at home in a country and city she loved. Her memory will inspire our work in Ukraine and beyond for years to come," he added.

Videos and pictures from the site showed the lower floors of the building heavily damaged. Cars in the area had their windows blown out.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov claimed "long-range, high-precision" missiles had hit factory buildings in Kyiv of Ukrainian rocket manufacturer Artem on April 28.

Ukrainian officials have not commented on whether the factory had been hit during the attack.

The United States is still trying to ascertain whether there was a military target for the strike or whether Russia may simply have been “trying to send a message to the international community,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said on MSNBC.

The attack was an assault on the Ukrainian state, the Ukrainian people, and on “those who are doing nothing more than to try to spread the truth,” Price said, noting that Hyrych unfortunately “is not the first journalist to lose his or her life in this fight.”

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram on April 29 that one body had been retrieved from the rubble and another 10 people had been injured in the strikes. He gave no further details.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who met with Guterres in Kyiv barely an hour earlier, has condemned the missile strikes and called for a "corresponding powerful reaction."

Hyrych, born in 1967, began working for RFE/RL in February 2018. Before that she worked at a leading television channel in Ukraine.

She is survived by her parents and an adult son.

Prince Charles and Camilla tour BBC newsroom

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have spoken to journalists reporting on Afghanistan, Ukraine and Russia during a visit to the BBC's headquarters in London.

Prince Charles and Camilla visited Broadcasting House to mark the 90th anniversary of the BBC World Service.

During a tour of the building, the prince expressed admiration for journalists reporting in "the most difficult of circumstances".

Speaking to the BBC's Lyse Doucet and Clive Myrie, Prince Charles said he had watched them "shivering on the roofs" during their recent broadcasts from Kyiv, Ukraine.

The royal couple also met journalists from the Ukrainian service, some of whom were forced to leave the country.

Ukrainian journalist Olga Malchevska, who viewed pictures of her shelled family home while on air at the start of the war, presented the prince with a drawing by her son and nephew, who fled to the UK after their home was bombed.

The drawing, described by the prince as "marvellous", pictured the Union and Ukrainian flags side by side.

Prince Charles and Camilla also spoke via video call to the BBC's Russia editor Steve Rosenberg as he travelled from St Petersburg to Moscow by train, and chief correspondent Ben Brown who was on a rooftop in Kyiv.

Elsewhere, they heard from reporters and producers from BBC Pashto.

They were shown round a TV studio by presenter Sana Safi, who also demonstrated delivering a news bulletin.

In 2013 the Queen visited Broadcasting House, when she officially opened an extension to the BBC's flagship building, touring the main newsroom and appearing in the background of a live studio broadcast, surrounded by dozens of members of BBC staff.

BBC director general Tim Davie said: "As the BBC World Service turns 90, it's fantastic to see the work of our colleagues being recognised, especially at a time when accurate and impartial journalism is needed now more than ever."

The BBC World Service delivers news to a weekly audience of 364m in more than 40 languages.

It recently received an additional £4.1m of government funding in response to the war in Ukraine.

The government said the money would help the BBC to relocate staff and operations to safe locations and to "ensure the resilience of their services".

RFI and France 24 contest ‘definitive’ broadcasting ban in Mali

Mali’s media regulator has ordered the definitive suspension of RFI radio and France 24 television in the country, a month after its ruling military junta accused the news organisations of reporting “false allegations” of abuse by the Malian army. The broadcasters’ parent company, France Médias Monde (FMM), has “strongly contested” the decision.

Radio France Internationale and sister TV station France 24 have been suspended in Mali since 17 March. The West African country’s media regulator, the Haute Autorité de la communication, said on Wednesday that their suspension would be “definitive”.

The French broadcasters are subsidiaries of FMM, a state-owned holding company. They are followed by a third of Mali’s population.

Responding to the regulator’s order, FMM said it “strongly contested” the decision and would “study all avenues of appeal”. The group also reiterated its “unwavering commitment to the independence and freedom of the media”.

FMM said it would continue to cover the news in Mali. It pledged to provide technical solutions to ensure Malians could continue to access the two broadcasters.

Destabilising strategy'

Mali’s junta accuses RFI and France 24 of “a premeditated strategy aimed at destabilising the political transition, demoralising the Malian people and discrediting the Malian army”.

The junta has staged two coups since August 2020. It has been accused of violations by several human rights groups, including in a 15 March report by Human Rights Watch, which accused Malian soldiers of responsibility for the killing of at least 17 civilians since early December.

The allegations of abuse in Mali were also made by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and subsequently reported by RFI and France 24.

The French government had called Mali's initial suspension of the French broadcasters a grave attack on the liberty of the press.

“I condemn with the greatest firmness this decision, which seems to me totally at odds with the values espoused by the people of Mali since its independence,” President Emmanuel Macron told a press conference.

Earlier this year, France announced the withdrawal of its troops from Mali after a breakdown in relations with the junta.

French troops were in Mali on a military mission, fighting against al Qaeda and Islamic State group-linked jihadist groups in the Sahel area.

Propagation News – 1 May 2022

RSGB
April 29, 2022

A week of high solar flux indices brought good openings on the higher bands. With the SFI consistently above 140 all week—at the time of writing—there have been reports of 10 metre openings well into the evening.

As Ian Goodier on the 10m UK Net Facebook group reported: “Tonight on 10m you could mistake the band for 20m—East Malaysia in one direction, Mexico in the other.”

There were also reports of Australian and New Zealand stations being worked on 10 metres, making this possibly one of the best weeks for 28MHz so far this solar cycle.

But there were some spanners in the works too. There were a lot of C-class solar flares and two M-class events this week. Geomagnetic conditions have also been disturbed at times, with Wednesday being the worst day with the Kp index hitting five twice on one day. Solarham.net said this was an unexpected geomagnetic storm as the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) tipped south. Another solar storm is forecast for 29 April, thanks to a large coronal hole on the Sun’s equator.

NOAA predicts more of the same next week with the SFI probably above 130.

Geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be quiet next week, with an average Kp index of two. That is, at least until 7 May, when it could rise to four. However, this presupposes that we don’t have any coronal mass ejections to contend with. At this point in the solar cycle, solar flares and associated CMEs are commonplace and could push the Kp index higher, roughly 48 hours after any Earth-directed CME. As always, keep an eye on solarham.net for daily updates.

And finally, we can now expect a big upturn in sporadic E openings on the higher HF bands. Keep an eye on the European 10m beacons for openings and find out more in our VHF news.

VHF and up:

As we move into May, the chances of sporadic E begin to increase and it’s worth keeping a close eye on the usual bands from 10m up to 6m and, later in the month, the 2m band might surprise us. The propquest.co.uk website contains a useful EPI map plot of regions where sporadic E may be more likely, based upon weather triggers of atmospheric gravity waves that are part of the formation process. It also contains a daily blog, with commentary to highlight significant jet streams and other regions of interest.

The main focus on the weather charts starts with high pressure bringing fairly good tropo conditions at the end of last week. Over this weekend, a small low will drift into western areas and generally disrupt the tropo propagation, producing a weaker pattern for next week, with a hint of isolated showers. Later in the week, some models bring another low south-east from Iceland to Denmark, introducing a cooler north-westerly flow with a few showers, until a new high builds next weekend. The result of this will be possible tropo windows later towards next weekend. There is a possibility of a little rain scatter in between, but generally limited.

The Eta Aquariid meteor shower will peak between midnight and dawn on Friday, 6 May. Its ZHR is a very respectable 50. The shower favours the Southern Hemisphere, and the radiant is low in the sky for the UK in the early pre-dawn hours.

The predictable cycle of moonbounce propagation continues this week with positive Moon declination peaking on Thursday, now almost coinciding with apogee, and therefore highest path losses. After mid-July the trend of rising declination and rising path loss reverses, until, in mid-2026, maximum declination coincides with perigee and minimum path loss again. 144MHz sky noise is generally low this week, reaching 500K on Wednesday. ``Domestic HF Callsigns from Australia and Territories

Hi Glenn, I heard you mention during DXLD that HF Domestic Shortwave stations in Australia (& territories), don't seem to have callsigns in WRTH.

ACMA no longer issue callsigns for HF Domestic Shortwave stations in Australia and territories and haven't for a while now. However, some older licenses still do have callsigns.

If you enter either a full name or surname in there, you will find licenses. If you enter - Hacko (Nickola) Radio DX, Gaynor (Timothy) Unique Radio Australia, Tate (Peter) Station X, Schwartz (Kevin) Bay Island Radio or Island FM 88 Shannon Shuttleworth (Also tech for K Schwartz 5045 kHz)and Al Kirton 4KZ Innisfail QLD 5055 kHz. ** NORFOLK ISLAND. Re the 5045 tests of Radio DX:

``[WOR] That's all from Norfolk 5045 - at least for now Apr 28 at 10:05 PM vk2dx <nick@clockmaker.com.au>

A quick report after two evenings of on-air tests. First, massive thank you to all listeners who invested their time and tuned in. You are a dedicated crowd, and I have an enormous respect for legends who have been listening for 20, 40 or 70 years, and keep tuning the knob to this day. Actually, the only reason even to attempt to get on air from Norfolk is to serve you by 'giving you a chance to log a new one'. Serving you is a pleasure and honour.

Another massive "thank you" goes to Glenn. There is nothing I can tell you about Glenn and his devotion to radio that you already don't know. To have him as an honorary station announcer was a thrill.

A word about Norfolk: my wife and I moved here in October last year. We still travel to Sydney on regular basis, but Norfolk is now (almost) a home. Life on island is complex and 'to get things done' takes far more time and patience than on mainland. Transport of goods to island is almost non existent, and people are still worried about covid. Medical resources are very limited. Same apply to food. The shops are empty and when fruit and vegetables are available, the prices are simply unbelievable. A kilo of apples goes for $15; potatoes are $10 and whole cabbage $50. Meat is reasonably affordable thanks to local producers (there are two butchers on island). Wires, tubing, timber, aluminium, steel, cement and building material appear on island occasional - and disappears fast. We have brought with us so far over 450 kg of various radio equipment and every piece was hand carried between two of us. Internet is painfully slow and even local phone calls are $1 per minute (and no one would dare to call overseas on land line or mobile!).

The relationship between local population and Australian Government is complex. There is a very strong desire for independence and self governance. Clearly, as a newcomer I am trying to see both sides of the story from unbiased standpoint, but there is no clean cut nor fast solution to a complex problem.

On the other hand, the island itself is a pure magic and living here is simply 'worth the trouble'. Playing radios is amazing; at our location we have no man made noise and bands are open to somewhere 24 hours per day. Made 40,000 QSOs already! Norfolk is one of the best places in world to enjoy Amateur radio, fishing and astronomy, and probably one of few where you can enjoy all three.

To broadcasting: a steep learning curve. Quite frankly, I am disappointed that my signal was rather 'amateurish' - it barely made it to West Coast of USA and Canada and even reports from New Zealand were rather modest. There are two reasons for this rather below-average performance: unreliable transmitter which failed to perform as per specs. The overheating protection was kicking in too often. A KW rated transmitter was barely producing 200-300W and most of the TXing was at 100W.

The second 'problem' are propagation on 60m which at this time of year favour north rather than north east. As many have reported, the second night was significantly worse than the first. The good news is that the 14m vertical worked as expected. This is a home made 14m radiator with 16 radials, tuned to 5045 with SWR 1:1 so no issues there.

Where do we go from here? Clearly, an investment in a professional grade transmitter is a must. My license allows me to run 1 KW and this is what is the power level required to produce a decent signal. If you have any suggestion to make or model, please do let me know. Of course, this is not-for-profit radio setup so money is a factor, but I am really looking for transmitter which will be turn on, and left alone, capable of transmitting 24/7 if required.

I will be also reaching out to Tim who is on this mailing list with request for mentoring. There is fair bit to learn about broadcasting - and if I am to put a signal on air, then I do need to do it right and in a professional way. I remain open to all suggestions, especially from fellow members who have been through similar process themselves.

Also, my plan is to apply for secondary frequency as well. It is yet to be seen how ACMA will deal with application, but in my opinion co-sharing a channel is less then ideal solution.

Finally, the bit that probably interest you the most: when is the next transmission? At this stage, assuming than new equipment could be obtained and delivered relatively fast, the next 'proper' transmission should be in September.

Best regards to all, thank you for your support and happy listening!

PS: yes, QSL cards will be printed and mailed out to all who have submitted listening report. No money is required, just make sure I have your mailing address. Unfortunately Norfolk Island stamps are no longer in circulation, sorry. Nick Hacko VK9DX``

WOR 2136 confirmed first broadcasts UT Friday April 29 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850, S9+32 into Missouri SDR; 7730, S9+15 into UTwente but with rapid clicking QRM on USB only, OTH radar?

NOT confirmed Friday April 29 at 1430 on WRMI 9955: on the air S9/S5, but open carrier/dead air only! From tune in 1429 past 1632. At least that means a little less BS after 1500. 9395 & 9455 are modulating normally. Something`s odd at Okeechobee. Next: as above Fri 1815 on IRRSes (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9940, April 28 at 2141, WTWW #? in dramatic Ukrainian, probably Biblical (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9975, April 29 at 0634, KVOH still on past nominal 0600* with S9+30 of music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 11835, April 29 at 0634, R. Vanuatu good on 3 x 3945, usual canned ID with music and YL and music mentioning Kingdom of Tonga, Papua New Guinea; delusions of grandeur? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIAL

``Michael C. Lewis, Alexander City, Alabama 35010. April 17, 2022

Dear Glenn,

I have been an on-and-off World of Radio listener since the late 1970’s when I was first introduced to international broadcasting via shortwave at the age of 17 (by borrowing my grandmother’s shiny new GE 8-Band radio). In addition to quickly becoming addicted to the SWL hobby, I obtained my Novice Ham license in 1980 and remain on the air today (KA4JGP).

While spending lots of time and money on too many radios and associated listening books over the years (like we all do in this hobby), I regret that I have utterly neglected the most valuable and thankfully still enduring radio resource, World of Radio!

This point finally hit home last night when I stumbled upon the shortwave radio archive website and listened to a tape of RCI’s final edition of the Shortwave Listener’s Digest with Ian McFarland. If it was not poignant enough, I caught your last DX report on that show in which you both exchanged hopes that you would meet up again.

It then registered with me that I should support your noble efforts. I bumped into Ian at one of the Winter SWL Festivals in Kulpsville, PA in the mid 90’s after he had left RCI. He was selling coffee mugs from his show noting it began about same time I became an active SWL (June, 1977). I really miss Ian and his show and of course your regular contributions to it. Fortunately, World of Radio is still with us.

That said, I am finally doing the right thing and offering a contribution, and plan to do more in the future. I’m near retirement from more than 30 years in local broadcasting and government work and have more time to tune in. Thanks for staying with us SWL’s and long life and good health to you. 73’s Mike Lewis``

TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET, WEEK ONE OF THE KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL, AND THE (DIXIE) CHICKS THIS WEEKEND ON TEXAS RADIO SHORTWAVE, 5950 KHZ

On 5950 kHz, beginning at 2300 UTC on Saturday, April 30, and continuing into Sunday, May 1, Texas Radio Shortwave presents three hours of eclectic programs. Here’s the lineup:

0100 UTC (Sunday, May 1) - (Dixie) Chicks Live.

=====

Tom Corbett, Space Cadet

Join us for an hour of the ABC TV show Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, from 1952. TRSW first aired the program on WRMI in June 2021.

In the coming weeks, TRSW will feature other old radio shows: Flash Gordon on May 7 and 14; Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar on May 21 and 28; and Camel Rock & Roll Dance Party on June 4 and 11. All at 2300 UTC Saturdays on 5950 kHz.

=====

Kerrville Folk Festival - Week 1
The Kerrville Folk Festival is the oldest music festival in Texas, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
This week’s featured artists are:
Bernice Lewis
Dana Cooper
Darrell Scott
Green Mountain Grass
Kathleen Edwards
Ron Artis II & The Truth
Sara Hickman
Spencer LaJoye
Stephanie Urbina Jones

Week 2 of the festival will be aired at 0000 UTC, Sunday, May 8, on 5950 kHz.

=====

The (Dixie) Chicks

Like them or not, The (Dixie) Chicks are one of the most recognizable acts in country music.

The group’s 2006 release of Not Ready to Make Nice responded to their 2003 blacklisting for comments about Iraq's invasion and former President George W. Bush. The song, which itself was criticized in some circles, put them back in the music mainstream.

The program includes these live performances:

Bluegrass (Instrumental)
Cold Day in July
Cowboy Take Me Away
Gaslighter
Goodbye Earl
If I Fall You're Going Down with Me
Let 'Er Rip
Not Ready to Make Nice
Ready to Run
Sin Wagon
Some Days You Gotta Dance
Strong Enough
White Trash Wedding
You Were Mine.

The program’s repeated on Sunday, May 8, at this same time and frequency

=====
TRSW has an eQSL for each of the programs. Verifications are available for a reception report on at least 20 minutes of a program, emailed to texasradiosw@gmail.com.

Glenn Hauser logs April 26-27-28, 2022

** ARGENTINA. 28480 USB, April 27 at 2306, mostly vacant 10m hamband lets thru LU1JHD, Marc, making quick US contacts. Only other unID signals sound Aussie on 28540 & 28460 USBs. QRZ.com:

``LU1JHD Argentina flag Argentina
MARCELO MARIANO ITZCOVICH (MARC)
BLAS PARERA 128 ( EL MARTILLO)
CONCORDIA, ER C.P.3200
Argentina``
ER stands for Entre Rios province, the one with J## calls, bordering Uruguay to the east and immediately north of Bs As (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, April 28 at 0643, JBA carrier, no doubt R. Kiribati, London, always the first and usually only 9-kHz TP carrier this early since it`s so far east, roughly same longitude as Hawai`i and thus well after LSS circa 0430 UT. Also this time of year, all TAs should have faded out, well after LSR there (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, April 28 at *1500, Voice of Martyrs Korea via unknown site cuts on, S9+10/20 into Coimbatore India SDR while Bengaluru is useless. Quick s/on announcement and starts English preacher, but 1501 cut abruptly to presumed Dhivehi, one YL preacher continuously, in the Maldivian local language, which VOMK has been planning for weeks but so far all in English --- until yesterday when I did not check, but Paul Walker, AK, says it was not English on April 27.

Despite my earlier findings, he thinx it`s via Vatican which follows immediately in Arabic at 1530. BUT, today via that remote the two stations axually *overlap* as VOMKM is still signing off, the English announcement not starting until 1530 for maybe a semi-minute, then VR uncovered and much weaker S8/S9. As I also said before, it`s inconceivable that the RCC`s VR would relay a Protestant service. I.e. anything Christian that is not Catholic or Orthodox (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORFOLK ISLAND. 5045, April 28 at 0605, I find the Upper Hutt NZ SDR already tuned by someone in Glen Innes NSW to 5044.98 AMN, so I camp on it; noisy but getting S7/S8 music which I first expect to be the co-channel Queensland station since Nick has criticized its rock music. Brisbane SDR is not getting anything, but seems deaf on SW, nothing on the waterfall and not even 5000 WWVH.

At 0611, there is my ``Radio DX`` ID, pause and starts playback of WOR 2135 again as test audio. Hardly any interruptions until briefly at 0618. I`m then offline but check out 5045 direct: trace of a JBA carrier, in heavy splash from 5040 Cuba. The Cuban JBA leapfrog on 5055 is stronger than 5045, and not the other Aussie.

Meanwhile others are still monitoring 5045 via other remotes: Walt Salmaniw, BC; Don Moman, AB; Ed Kusalik, AB; Matt Francis, NSW; Chris Mackerell, NZ; Tim Gaynor, NSW of Unique Radio who suggests a move to 5060 as his station had to move from 5045 to 5035. And Bruce Churchill, CA, says carrier off at 0738.5*, not reaching further than Melbourne.

To be a new SWBC radio country, NI is no doubt far enough away from mainland Australia. Norfolk is not on the official NASWA country list -- surely because until now there has been no SWBC from there. http://www.naswa.net/images/NASWA_country_list.pdf I suppose they will eventually catch up (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2135 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday April 27 from 2100:42, good via Maryland remote on 7490.089; following Global Star satellite network ID after preceding `Financial Survival`.

Also confirmed UT Thursday April 28 at 0030 on WRMIs: 9395 S9+20/25;
9455 also S9+20/25 but less treble in the modulation, both into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed UT Thursday April 28 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5010 S9+5 into Knoxville SDR; 9395 S9+15/20 into Missouri SDR. BTW, 5010 hardly making it to St Lucia or Boa Vista SDRs, yet closer to its azimuth.

Richard Lemke, Alberta also reports on these: ``Dear Glenn:
9395, QRN, static, QSB fading,
9455, jamming [really??], 0042,
9455, 0030, 0041, 0059 (45533),
9395, 0040, 0043, 0058 (45433),
0059, 9455 kHz, April 28 UTC 2022 [Thu]
9395, static QRN, 0130, 0143, 0158 (55433), 0159, April 28 [Thu] Good listening, Richard``

New WOR 2136 should be ready early UT Friday April 29 for downloads and first airings at 0130 on WRMIs 5850, 7730 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7780, April 26 at 0054, NO signal from WRMI-13, still missing at 0141. Supposed to start at 2300. Date correct, overlooked for previous report (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7890, April 28 at 0639, R. Vanuatu S3/S4 on 2 x 3945; S9/S6 with flutter on 11835 = 3 x 3945 with island music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1521 kHz, April 26 at 0607 UT, JBA het upon 1520 KOKC. Nothing else on 9-kHz splits. Earlier was looking for Sa`udi Arabia, reported reactive during Ramadan but not 24h. Of course at this very late hour could not possibly be SA even with 2000 kW; so what? There is a 5 kW in Spain, not too late for it? Or early TP? There is 1 kW in NZ, 2 kW in NSW. Date correct: Overlooked in previous report (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

New High Power Broadcast of VORW Radio International to Europe!

Hello shortwave listeners! I don’t post here very often but I just wanted to get the word out about a new broadcast I’ll be regularly doing for listeners in Europe, Central Asia and perhaps even East Asia.

Beginning Friday the 29th of April, 2022 and continuing every Friday – this radio program will be heard across Europe & Beyond from a high power transmitter in Moosbrunn, Austria.

The broadcast is 1 hour in length and I always consider it to be a light entertainment program. The aim of this radio show is to provide good music and occasional discussion to listeners worldwide. Oftentimes, listener music requests are taken and played and all are invited to participate.

Here is the broadcast schedule for this additional airing:

Fridays 1600 UTC (7 PM EEST/MSK) – 9670 kHz – Moosbrunn 100 kW – Europe, Russia, Central & East Asia

For this airing I will resume QSL verification of reception reports, something I have stopped since 2020.

Reception reports and feedback are most welcome at vorwinfo@gmail.com

Glenn Hauser logs April 27, 2022

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, April 27 at 1437-1440, again this Wednesday NO signals from LRA36 into four Brazilian SDRs, but most are getting some fast clicking, OTH radar? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 284 MCW kHz, April 27 at 0702 UT, dash and QD, 500 watt NDB at The Pas, Manitoba. I would much rather hear the others on 284, RT at Rankin InleT NU, or YOC at Old Crow YT.

[and non] 332 MCW kHz, April 27 at 0705 UT, dash and QT, 1000 watt NDB at Thunder Bay ON, mixed with weaker but much closer IC Wichita KS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 15970, 15920, 15800, April 27 at 0647, Chinese JBA, and 15760 S5/S9: all are CNR1 jammers against Sound of Hope per Aoki.

15785, April 27 at 0648, different Chinese as this is CRI via Xianyang site (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, April 27 at 0653, RHC in wrong language Spanish but chopped off air at 0654*; leaving only 6165 in English. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORFOLK ISLAND. Radio DX Test transmission --- Conversation UT April 27 with Nick Hacko, VK9DX as I posted exclusively on the WOR iog at 0440:

NH: Hi Glenn - making some progress --- the vertical is up and tuned to 5045 kHz and with bit of luck I hope to put at least a carrier around local sunset.

GH: Nick, how much power will you be running? and How active is the other 5045 station lately, at what hours?

NH: I could not detect any signals at my sunset until late for the past week or so. The amp is not complaining at 300 W carrier, but that would be probably max I could run right now.

GH: Last report I find is March 14 when Ron Howard, California was hearing Bay Islands Radio from 1130 UT = not clear whether tune-in time, or not audible until then. I see that your sunset today is 0618 UT, while in Brisbane it is 0720 UT.

So should we tip the group already to be alert tonight? Are you prepared to QSL? Despite NI`s integration into Australia, it`s probably considered a separate radio country by many.

NH: I will start tuning around in 2 hours or so {~0600 UT April 27}. Feel free to give the group heads up, any report received - even just a carrier - would be appreciated. vk9dx@clockmaker.com.au

Yes, I will print a special QSL card for this (and any future) transmission. My only concern right now is to get the signal right, I have no broadcast experience whatsoever. Check my QRZ.com page (VK9DX) for photos of the actual location. https://www.qrz.com/lookup/vk9dx

GH: Great! Nick says there will be a familiar voice on the tests.

GH later: At 0606 UT April 27 I had just tuned the Brisbane SDR to 5045, nothing at first but then a JBA carrier, too weak to lock. Probably Norfolk, as if the Qsld 5045 were on it would surely be stronger there.

At 0611 I move to the Upper Hutt NZ SDR, where I do hear IDs intermittently in AM mode. I record some of them at 0613, and guess what, it`s me! Nick had asked me a few hours before to record IDs for this, and was also going to use the latest WOR as test audio. On next WOR 2136 I shall include recordings as heard off air to remote, and the original studio recording I sent him.

Computer is off and by 0642 I`m checking 5045 direct and do not detect a JBA carrier. But at my final check 0717, there *is* a JBA carrier to Enid.

I wonder if Radio DX has an official callsign? The other three private SW stations in Australia are not shown with any in WRTH, but V- or A- callsigns would be officially expected on licences even if never used on air. I suppose Nick will be testing some more in this timespan as long as Queensland be off.

Previous and further monitoring reports from WOR iog posts:

Walt Salmaniw, BC at 0616: I'm at the dials here in Masset. I don't know whether it was Norfolk Island or not, but right at 0600 and a few seconds before, I could see an intermittent carrier. On for, perhaps, 10 seconds and then off for a few seconds. Nothing again until carrier on at about 0605:15 with a good loud carrier. Couldn't make anything out, though. Strength really decreased over the next minute and carrier off again at 0607:10 or so. Carrier on for a second or two only, then off, then back and off again. Quite easy to hear the carrier using CW. Back again 0608:25, relatively strong again. Just seems to be an open carrier. I'd better send something off! There might have been some speech at 0610, but too weak to be sure. Off, now back again at 06:11. Yes, definitely some speech by OM at 0611:40, but off immediately thereafter. "You are listening to..." seems to be repeated a couple times, then carrier off. Repeated each time. Walt

Bruce Churchill, CA at 0620: Norfolk Island is in fact operating from 0606 tune at the KFS SW site in Half Moon Bay CA. “You are listening to Radio DX, transmitting from Norfolk Island on 5,045 kilohertz” [sic] repeated every few seconds, presumably by Nick [sic]. Carrier being turned on and off. SINPO 35333.

Glenn, OK circa 0623: I`m also hearing it via the Upper Hutt NZ SDR. S4/S5 but high noise level about the same. Nothing but IDs repeated several times with long pauses, can`t tell if carrier stays on or not. AM. At 0619 comes in much stronger, noise level down and/or power bumped up. 0620 carrier off apparently as quieting gone, just noise. 0621 back on with ID. Recorded and will provide later. Have not yet tried it direct but doubtful. Glenn

Chris Mackerell, NZ at 0634: Can you hear anything on my Marahau Kiwis? I'm out for dinner but have left my Elad recording. Cheers, Chris

Bruce at 0637+: Should be able to hear from any NZ Kiwi site – the NZRDXL Mangawhai site was quite good at 0605.

First heard at 0605 from the NZRDXL Kiwi site but the signal was good enough that I decided to switch to the KFS SW site near San Francisco at 0606 using their SW TCI 532 antenna (pointed at 240 degrees, I believe).

Music heard at 0641 with Nick [sic] speaking – hard to understand with static level. Nice signal at S2-3, overall SINPO at 2v3/5/3/3/2.

Walt: Bruce, that's Glenn Hauser's WOR!

Bruce: Roger that! On again at 0643.

Walt: And guess who came on at 0641? Our very own, Mr Glenn Hauser with WOR. Fantastic! Quite readable signal, and very little noise on my brand new 290 deg DKAZ. Oops, looks like Glenn is off again at 0642:15. Walt in Masset, BC

Now some digital interference on the upper side, but short-lived, so not too problematic. Glenn comes and goes with the transmitter! He's off right now (0648 UT)

Bruce at 0703: Test may be over. Nothing heard since 0650:45 (last WOR xmsn was 0649:15 to 0650:45). The good news is that Nick can be heard in WCNA and very likely beyond when he becomes operational. If 300 watts is the power, it’s working!

Nick at 0707: [WOR] NF test transmission update: technical issues. As you can clearly see - dealing with teething / technical issues. In a nutshell: fluctuating between two extremes: exciter either not producing enough power to drive the amp properly, or when it does, the amp's temp protection kicks in and shuts it down. My apology to all who tuned in to give it a go. The good news is that the antenna itself is happy with whatever juice comes in and does good job radiation that RF your way. I will continue to look for a solution, but most likely there will be just more of this intermittent transmission until daytime tomorrow. Hopefully you will be able to catch at least a decent chunk. The plan is to stay up until West Coast sunrise. Thank you again. Nick

Eric Fetters-Walp, Lake Stevens, Washington, USA: Via the SW-aimed antenna on the KPH SDR in California, I caught some of Glenn's voice fading in starting around 0713. Still audible at 0715 UT. Nothing definitively audible at first on my own radio here in Lake Stevens, Washington, but I did get faint talking, just barely audible, around 0717 UTC when I checked. Thanks for the testing!

Nick at 1008 UT: Norfolk Island RadioDX now off air --- At 0915 out of blue, Island Music Radio from Queensland jumped on frequency with that ungodly rock. Last thing we want is an on air shouting match :-) so I've pulled the plug. The short term goal is to get the transmitter running at a steady pace of 300W, lay more radials at the antenna base and then transmit when channel is clear.

There is one major thing that would work for North American listeners - Norfolk Island is 1500 km east from Australian mainland, meaning not only that my signal will be stronger in NA but also an hour and half advantage propagation wise. If Island Radio intends to transmit 24/7 on 5045 that would be an issue only for European listeners.

Once again, your reports and messages of encouragement are truly appreciated. If you hear rock and profanities on 5045 rest assured that wasn't Norfolk you've tuned in; SO those listening reports should go to IMR. 73 Nick VK9DX RadioDX

Tom Daly: Nick, I just looked at your QRZ page & the pix of Norfolk Is. are beautiful. Looks like the kind of place that when someone visits they may never want to leave. Thanks for posting them. Tom (all via Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs April 26, 2022

** CANADA [and non]. 346 MCW kHz, April 26 at 0613 UT, dash and YXL, 500 watt ND beacon at Sioux Lookout, Ontario, JBA; only other one is the 1000 watt dash and WG on 248 MCW from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Major storm area in N America now is circa Tamaulipas. FYI, besides the high atmospheric noise levels of the season, I am still stymied in the 380-420 kHz area by protracted elevated noise from local line or unknown device. I did just manage to detect on 417 MCW, 25 watt IY from Charles cItY, Iowa. Even under ideal conditions, I`m at point where any new LW/MW beacon logs are sparse (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 21530, April 26 at 0054, JBA caarrier; 18900 JBA music S6-S8; 18970 weaker, all are known CNR1 jammers vs Sound of Hope; and 17560 JBA carrier, CNR1 jammer against VOA Chinese via Philippines this hour only. Interesting propagation beacons over the dayside (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 15800, April 26 at 1458, CNR1 with good strength, timesignal to 1500*. Aoki shows only this jammer vs SOH at 0000-1600 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6165, April 26 at 0618, S9+30 of dead air in English from RHC; only other one is 6060, S9+10/20 of English with some hum. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, April 26 at 2245, VOT is on and even audible direct with music, fair S9/+10 as long as tuned LSB to evade RTTY USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE [non]. 1386, April 27 at 0000-0005, UR1 via LITHUANIA, with `Ukraine: Security Issue` English segment, good into UTwente, but with noise bursts mostly on with brief breaks, not jamming? Not so clear into Bryansk, Russia, SDR, but constant background noise level no different than adjacent frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2135 monitoring: confirmed UT Tuesday April 26 at 0030 on WRMIs into Knoxville SDR: 9395 S9+30, 9455 S9+10. Crisper modulation on 9395, lower fi with some warble on 9455. At 0057 direct: 9455 S9+10/20, 9395 S8/9+10.

Also confirmed Tuesday April 26 at 2230 on WRMI 9955, S8/S9 direct and undermodulated but no jamming audible at first; by 2257 jamming is building up, but by 2309 R. Libertad is still well audible here atop it. Next:
