Glenn Hauser logs July 30-31, 2021

** CUBA [and non]. 7345, July 30 at 2350, no signal from R. Martí, DRM or AM. Had been running DRM daytime starting at 1700 until 0200, but UT July 28 had switched to AM. Now gone but pulse jamming remains. No other RM AM signals on 7 MHz band yet nor 6030 to start at 0000 but 5980 already running, tough luck for R. Chaski, Perú (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 5800, UT Sat July 31 at 0200, Cool AM Radio, another pirate relay via Texas Radio SW via WRMI; VG via Tennessee SDR. Rock music none of which I recognize, nor which I think is ever announced by name or performer? Frequent heavily produced liners and IDs, main voice doing a very good American accent, invites reports to coolamradio@hotmail.com 0214 banjo music; 0232 ID with website www.coolam.nl; 0244 plug supporting free radio, address again. 0256 closing with tnx to WRMI and TRSW for availablizing this. Closes with ``I`ll give you a kiss``, ``and now for something completely different``; `Yellow Rose of Texas` theme;

0300 into `Viva Miami` in Spanish, starting with info about then upcoming special broadcast on 5010, Monday July 26 of Oasis-1210 coverage of that march on Washington; and mailbag; 0315 into Mideast music fill; 0325 Cayman Holiday; 0339 still World Music fill with that perennial, `Sandunga` on marimba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 9610-USB, July 31 at 0038, hard rock at S7-S8 into Missouri SDR, tnx to hot tip from Vance-MI in latest Free Radio Weekly just arrived that after emitting on 9530 and 9520 as heard since 2320 by Robins & Zichi, Mix Radio International had switched to 9610. It`s quite in the clear there; hard rock with breaks for canned IDs and/or address at 0048, 0051, 0136, 0148, 0154, still past 0200 when I am mainly listening to Cool AM Radio on 5800 via WRMI; and MRI still going on 9610-USB at 0250, 0317, 0341 chex.

Had been on lower 9 MHz channels as early as 1806 July 30, and announced frequency changes here: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,84476.0.html

BTW, earlier around 2350 July 30 check of 6.9-MHz pirate band found no activity; quite a bit in HFU an hour later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2097 monitoring: confirmed UT Saturday July 31 at 0130 on WRMI 9395, VG S9+10/20 via east Tennessee SDR which in SAM mode shows frequency offset +29.7 to 29.8 Hz. Next:

** U S A. 4840, July 29 at 0617, S9+30 of dead air from WWCR. This happens frequently, sloppyrator asleep, literally? at the switch. Meanwhile, TOMBS continues on 3215 & 5890, the latter lowly modulated compared to 5935 PMS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7489.9v), UT Sat July 31 from 0000, WBCQ webcast with `AAAWWW` starting William Tell Overture. Tomorrow is the 175th anniversary of founding of Monticello, so A&A are participating in 10 am parade. Lauds how well the little town has treated WBCQ; population down to less than 1,000 [2,010 census or Rand McNally estimate was only 400!]. Jason will be broadcasting the parade on WBCQ`s AM & FM stations on 780, 94.7 & 98.3 but probably not SW on short notice.

A&A visit the scenic Maine coast on a day or two off, and found that lunch for two now costs $93 at their favorite restaurant; good food, but ?!?! Lamenting inflation, minimum wage increases, etc. That annoying caller Tim interrupts again this week at 0017, so I zone out, but he`s pushing gold and silver when I zone back in.

0029 Allan laments that FCC is not taking any axion on his application to buy WHRI; against AW`s dedication to religious and Free Speech broadcasting? Not as pointed or detailed as his memo I quote verbatim on WOR this week. 0043 finally datestamp as 30 July YOOL 2021, and quadri-casting on 7490, 6160, 4790 and 3265. Since 3265 has not been heard lately, I quickcheck one of the Rochester NY remotes where it is indeed JBA; the Kiwi in Maine run by the same ham is unavailable.

0050 Free Radio Weekly has just arrived, so he reads a few items, just frequencies, station names and some content, no times or credits; he mentions Mix Radio International but overlooks hot-off-the-press news that it just moved to 9610-USB, where I am also hearing it, see NORTH AMERICA. Larry Will just sent a report on WBCQ frequencies now.

0056 update on the SuperStition; blew up about 3 weeks ago. Thalès in France is fast-tracking a replacement PA tube and will air-freight it within weeks rather than months. Hard to get tower crews in to work on the antenna due to Covi-nation. Says recent events have trimmed 2-3 years off his lifespan, but Angela is young and beautiful as ever; she jokes that his distress has affected her too. 0100 he reiterates that as a Man Of Science, he understands how vaccines work and urges them. Angela still thinks vax result from Chinese bio-weapon and should not be trusted. Prayer and again runs just past 0101+ into Hal Turner time. Here is John Carver`s version:

``Tonight's show started on time on 4790, 6160 and 7490. Allan and Angela in the studio. The usual banter between Allan and Angela. Allan announced that tomorrow is the one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Monticello. Said that they would all be riding in the parade. He also mentioned that Angela was related to several people in Monticello. Allan then complains about spending ninety-three bucks for lunch while touring coastal Maine with Angela. Angela wonders whether the new minimum wage accounts for the huge increase in prices.

Phone call from Tim at 0017 and things get a bit confusing with all the stuff that Tim is saying. Then the talk turns to finance, interest rates, credit cards, debit cards, people today not understanding how business really works. Then Allan jumps to talking about the FCC and states that he can't understand why there hasn't been a decision made yet on the purchase of WHRI. Phone call at 0039 with a reception report and some comments about a caller a couple weeks ago. Another phone call at 0049. Reading of the new edition of Free Radio Weekly at 0050. Sorry but I missed the last five minutes of the program and can only assume that things went well. John, Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs July 29-30, 2021

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer check, July 30 at 1343: S8-S6 of Chinese on 13130; but only JBA or JBA carriers on 13530, 13020, 12850, no others in the 12s-13s nor 16s (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, July 30 at 0614, RHC English, S9+10 at first seemed dead air, but then JBM with no buzz. 6000 & 6165 & 5040 are off, leaving only 6100 sufficient. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 7435 & 7335, July 29 at 0619, R. Martí is off again; apparently the unrest in Cuba it stirred up has subsided. Since at least July 12 it had extended past previous midnight closing at 0400 UT, presumably all-night until new day start at *1000.

But pulse jammers are still running on 7435 & 7335; and as for 40m hamjamming, similar noise against nothing on 7215 and 7157 only, rather than several more amorphous peaks as before (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 93.9, July 30 at 1602 past 1620 on random caradio chex, dead air from KIMY, gospel huxter in Watonga; still so at 1729 UT. Standard inquiry? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PERU [non]. Replies to my report on 5800 WRMI special, July 29 at 0300-0400: ``Regarding Perú le canta a las Américas,

Not sure what to make of the squeal being described, I briefly monitored over 20 SDRs at various locations during the broadcast and did not note this although other audio quality was variable depending upon location. We'll see what comes in from the other reception reports.

The conversational part of the program was a three-way Skype between Lima, Peru, Durango, Mexico and Chicago USA. The best audio available in that situation was going to be good telephone (vs studio) quality, but the locations were authentic. The music was added later in the mixdown, which accounts for the difference. Our upcoming special for México in September will be a similar situation, with two locations in México.

This producer will agree to disagree on the question of "more music, less talk". Those fully fluent en español received some cultural context to the bicentennial as well as about the songs and artists themselves, and although that is admittedly not always to the taste of all listeners, it is here - context - where radio can still add value to music in a world where most listeners can just as easily pull up songs on the Internet with better audio quality.

The promotional support as always is highly appreciated. --"Uncle Bill" Tilford, Chicago, Illinois``

``The "squeal" problem with WRMI's 5800 kHz transmitter is real. although I'd describe it as a "warbling whistle." On my SDR waterfall, there are two unstable audio traces around 2 and 4 kHz from the carrier on both sidebands. These have been noted consistently during the Europirate relays organized by Texas Radio Shortwave the last few weeks. As Glenn mentioned, this is almost certainly caused by a problem with the transmitter's modulator. 73, Andy Robins, Kalamazoo, Michigan USA``

``Does that turn up at just some azimuths maybe? Perhaps we'll find out soon`` -- Tilford

There is only one azimuth ever scheduled for 5800: 160 degrees, same as 4980 and 9955 (gh)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 7310, July 30 after 2200, RRI in English to Europe also reaches Maryland SDR just fine. Also weaker on 5945. Too much piles up at this hour, also Turkey on 9830, Spain on 17855 M/W/F; hard to choose which or keep switching around (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, July 30 at 1349, HIFER beacon repeating ID K6FRC over and over quite readable vs CODAR; before retiring I had tuned to 13564-USB to remind me to check this first thing in morning. Claiming only 1.8 milliwatts from Patterson CA, any relog of K6FRC remains notable, and certainly not every day, but never very far from 1400 making me wonder if it really run constantly. Seldom heard are any of the dozens of other such beacons listed on the 13550-13570 ISM band (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2097 monitoring: confirmed first SWBCs, UT Fri July 30 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850 VG direct; 7780, S9/+20 into UTwente Holland SDR.

Also confirmed Fri July 30 at 2030 on IRRS via AM Italia, 918 kHz, this week not cut off after 5 seconds but apparently complete until 2059, S9+32 including high noise level at first via Noale SDR, but VG non-noisy by the end. In Arctic Radio Club mv-eko, a QSL shows AM Italia, 918 kHz, 4.5 kW, folded monopole antenna on 55 m tower from Granze (PD). No mention of Villa Estense as location. Well, the two are only 4+ km apart, both 31 km SSW of Padova. A previous talk program was chopped off at 2029.5 for IRRS only ID, then WOR. Next:

Propagation News – 1 August 2021

Last week the Sun was bursting with sunspots, with a solar flux index in the high 80s. But, by Thursday, we were looking at a different picture, with zero sunspots and a solar flux index of 79. We also had a geomagnetic disturbance, thanks to the arrival of a high-speed stream from a coronal hole late on Wednesday. This pushed the Kp index to four, with the solar wind speed remaining elevated until at least late Thursday. The disruption triggered a short-lived ionospheric enhancement, with maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path reaching 25 MHz at 20:40 UTC on Wednesday, according to Propquest and the Chilton Ionosonde data. But, by Thursday morning, MUFs were struggling to reach 14MHz.

Propagation earlier in the week had been quite good, with extensive openings to the Far East on 17m. Rodney, G0CBO reports working a host of stations, including Japan and Kazakhstan, using just 40W FT8 to a vertical. Steve, G0KYA worked 8N8OLP, the Tokyo special event station for the Olympics, using 50W FT8 to a quarter-wave vertical on 20m.

Next week, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Centre predicts the solar flux index will remain in the mid-70s. It also has the Kp index at a maximum of two or three, reflecting the lack of solar coronal holes. There is the possibility of a geomagnetic disturbance this weekend caused by material arriving from a small coronal hole on the Sun’s equator, but its effects are likely to be minimal and short lived.

VHF and up:

Last week provided some excellent rainscatter QSOs for GHz bands operators. The heavy showers across the South and East of the country coincided with not one, but two GHz contests. During the all-day Sunday, UK Microwave group event, many stations reported working into the North of England from the South and East Anglia via backscatter from a line of heavy showers extending from Ipswich down to Southampton.

The coming week looks very similar to the last one, with an unsettled weather pattern offering further heavy showers or thunderstorms and longer periods of rain. This will favour rain scatter, while there is little prospect of any high pressure systems returning to produce Tropo.

Regarding Sporadic-E, the unsettled weather suggests there will be jet stream activity to help along any late-season interest. Remember that the season can extend into early September, so plenty of time to fill in any missing squares this year.

With positive Moon declination, this week we’ll have long Moon visibility windows, but with apogee on Monday, path losses will be at their highest.

Random or sporadic meteor rates are still high, but there’s a big shower on the way. Get ready for the largest shower of the year, the Perseids. This peaks on the 12th and 13th of August with a zenithal hourly rate of 100. Find out more about this shower next week. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Solar activity slowed this week, with the average daily sunspot number declining from 48.9 last week to 33.9 this week (July 22 – 28). Wednesday, July 28, saw no sunspots at all.

Average daily solar flux went from 81.3 to 83.

Geomagnetic indicators held steady, with average daily planetary A index at 6.4 both last week and this week. Average daily middle latitude A index went from 6.4 last week to 6.3 this week.

Predicted solar flux is 76 on July 30 – 31; 74 on August 1; 72 on August 2 – 4; 74 on August 5 – 6; 75 on August 7 – 12; 78, 80, 82, and 85 on August 13 – 16; 90 on August 17 – 18; 85 on August 19 – 20; 80 on August 21; 82 on August 22 – 28; 78 on August 29, and 75 on August 30 – September 8.

Predicted planetary A index is 8, 12, and 8 on July 30 – August 1; 5 on August 2 – 9; 12 and 10 on August 10 – 11; 5 on August 12 – 15; 10 and 8 on August 16 – 17; 5 on August 18 – 23; 12, 12, and 8 on August 24 – 26; 5 on August 27 – 28; 8 on August 29, and 5 on August 30 – September 5.

F.K. Janda, OK1HH, is on vacation this week, hiking in the mountains of the Czech Republic, so we have forecasts from two of his associates. The first is from Martina Pavelkova, RWC Prague, Astronomical Institute, Solar Department, Ondrejov, Czech Republic.

Solar activity forecast for the period July 30 – August 05:

Activity level: mostly very low
X-ray background flux (1.0 – 8.0 A) in the range A5.5 – B1.5
10.7-centimeter radio flux: Fluctuating in the range 74 – 82
Events: Class C (0 – 4/period), Class M (0/period), Class X (0/period), Proton (0/period)
Relative sunspot number (Ri): in the range 0 – 55

Here’s a rgeomagnetic activity forecast for July 30 – August 5 from Tomas Bayer, RWC Prague, Institute of Geophysics of the ASCR, Prague, Department of Geomagnetism, Budkov Observatory (BDV).

Quiet: Jul 30 – 31, Aug 2 – 4
Unsettled: Jul 31, Aug 1 – 3, 5
Active: 0
Minor storm: 0
Major storm: 0
Severe storm: 0

Geomagnetic activity summary: Next week, we expect at most quiet to unsettled conditions. The more unsettled events are possible about August 1 – 2, and also about Thursday, August 5. The other days, we expect quiet to unsettled conditions generally, closer to quiet level.

Jan, KC0V, in Colorado, wrote to report a big 2-meter opening from DN70 to the midwest on the afternoon of July 24.

“I was busy with some chores then happened to look at DXMaps and the APRS VHF propagation map and noticed a large Es cloud located over eastern Nebraska and western Iowa and another over southeastern Kansas. I quickly tuned into 2 meters, FT8 144.174. Signals were very strong, with +21 dB the best report I sent and +29 dB the best report I received. My QSOs, beginning at 2216 and ending at 2235 UTC were:

“Then followed 26 minutes of a mixture of single decodes, total quiet, meteor bursts, but no QSOs. Then at 2301 UTC, K9YK in EN60. And then it was over. I don’t know when the opening began since it was well in progress when I got to the radio, but it was an amazing 20 minutes or so.

“Unfortunately, I was unable to complete [a contact] with W3IP in FM19, which would have been the longest-distance QSO of the opening for me. We heard each other over several sequences but were unable to finish the exchange.

Glenn Hauser logs July 29, 2021

** CUBA. 6060 & 6100 & 6165, July 29 at 0614, RHC English all about equally undermodulated and strengths S9+10/20 while 6000 and 5040 are off. No buzz on 6060. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PERU [non]. 5800, UT Thu July 29 at 0300, WRMI with special `Perú Le Canta a las Américas`, in honor of the bicentennial of independence in 1821y. I don`t have time to listen when broadcast, so record and listen ASAP later. Opens with disturbing clip of about first 14 notes of national anthem and IDs as if it were an interval signal. I object to messing with NAs whether the SSB or any other.

But nice other Peruvian music for the hour mixed with Spanish-only comments. I would have preferred more music and wish I were fluent enough to follow the lyrix 100%. But then I often have trouble with lyrix in ``English``! Bill Tilford speaks his inimitable Spanish here and there, along with Alejandro Vallebueno, co-producer from Durango, México, but someones also from Perú. Their comments sound like they came over low bitrate internet, but music fortunately is higher-fidelity.

Also it happens that this WRMI-10 transmitter on 5800 has a constant squeal on it, rather like WWCR-1 used to be but that was much worse. I`m hearing this on two different remotes so don`t think receivers are to blame. It`s equally on USB and LSB so can`t avoid it that way, only by narrowing AM bandwidth which of course is no good for the music. Possibly a double-notch filter would help if we had one, tho the squeal by definition is not a single pure pitch tone, but wavers. I`ve noticed same on other 5800 broadcasts. For WWCR I heard that the cause was modulator `cards` that needed to be replaced.

At 0329 break for WRMI ID, and personal greeting from Jeff White. Then talk about Peruvian SW stations such as R. Tawantinsuyo, La Voz de la Selva, R. Tarma. On SW they are all private stations, but on AM & FM, R. Nacional has an important presence. There is a cultural classical station on FM in Lima. Credits such DXers such as César Pérez Dioses. About 0332 a cappella man singing I presume in Quechua. Next song features a guy with a bad voice for singing. Then Estefanía sings with a vocal range to rival Yma Sumac. Next song is a dance from the north by a brass band. About 0349, something about a religious festival. I never notice any reference to the current uncertain political situation. Mentions Inca-Kola, which I remember as very pink and sweet but today is a.k.a. golden with lemony flavor' and supposedly available at my nearest Walmarts.

At 0354, QSL instruxions, at least 20 minutes of program details and SINPO which would be 54554, main problem being the self-imposed squeal which I will classify as I. Follows with cock crowing, chirps, and other morning sounds mixed with an `Andean` tune, and closing.

All nice, but I wish they had included the national anthem complete and uninterrupted. It is a very good one. Here`s one version of it I find, all six verses for 12 minutes, but not showing the lyrix as available on some others: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oARd1x7wWds (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 840, July 29 at 0530 UT, on a household radio against an E-W wall, minimising WHAS, after Mexican music, Spanish IDs, fairly clearly as ``Radio Malena`` 840; maybe also mentioned 1060. Later I carefully null WHAS on the DX-398. The SS fades in and out, and sometimes coincides up with WHAS down, SAH of a few Hz, but no break at ToH 0600. At 0610 I can tell the songs are axually praisemusic by their lyrix, the one now ``En el Nombre de Jesús`` over and over; 0619 another one about Jesús.

I know from experience that the normal SS vs WHAS is KVJY Pharr TX in the RGV, 5/1 kW, rather than CMHW Santa Clara or any other LA. Radio-locator night coverage map shows a null NE toward WHAS, mainly to the NW but some signal due north. But that is not the known slogan of KVJY. Supposedly ``Ultra 104.9`` but another name on website:

https://radioaleluya.org/horarios-de-programaciones/
R. Aleluya, as also in NRC Log is certainly not the name I was hearing. But this schedule does not account for anything between 9 pm and 6 am CDT!

Broad search on ``Radio Malena`` leads to stations in Serbia and Argentina, but on FM, no connexion to AM; nor is there any similar name in WRTH 840 or 1060 listings for Central and South America. Possibly KVJY is plugged into a Radio Malena, altho the Argentine appears to be secular. Mexican? IRCA Log of 2020 shows only two left on 840, both ``Fiesta Mexicana``, in Jalisco and Nayarit.

The only other US SS on 840 in the 2020-2021 NRC AM Log, no later than a year ago, were KJFA Belén NM [ex-860] with grupo ``Fuego 102.9``, 1800/30 watts; and WCEO Columbia SC, 50 kW direxional daytimer, ``La Raza``, both extremely unlikely now, by power and/or time and/or direxion. Possibly the name I heard was spelt differently than ``Malena`` as it seemed, so no further search hits.

FWIW, not much, the KVJY stream at 1700 UT July 29 after music had multi-station ID for Houston, Iowa?, as Radio Aleluya, into `Diálogo Pastoral` from Houston with hum (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

WRMI RELAYS DUTCH PIRATE COOLAM RADIO, FRIDAY NIGHT AT 10 P.M. ET

WRMI RELAYS DUTCH PIRATE COOLAM RADIO, FRIDAY AT 10 P.M. ET

Texas Radio Shortwave is teaming with WRMI to present an hour of music from CoolAM Radio.

The program will be broadcast on 5800 kHz, Friday night, July 30, at 10 p.m. ET (0200 GMT on July 31).

CoolAM Radio is a European free radio station that’s one of the few Dutch pirate stations using a low-powered transmitter instead of the huge military surplus transmitters or powerful homemade equipment of other Dutch stations. CoolAM Radio is seldom on-the-air but is relayed by North American free radio stations regularly. Its Offshore History Radio series is relayed via Germany commercial shortwave station Channel 292. In Europe, CoolAM was most often heard on 6735 kHz.

Reception reports must be sent directly to the station because Texas radio shortwave won’t issue an eQSL for the broadcast. The station’s address is coolamradio@hotmail.com.

This is the fifth in a series of weekly WRMI relays of European pirates and low-power licensed broadcasters, many of which haven’t been heard in North America for many years — if ever. The rest of the series looks like this:

August 7 - Cupid Radio, The Netherlands
August 14 - Free Radio Service-Holland, The Netherlands
August 21 - Atlantic 2000 International, France
August 28 - Radio Delta International, The Netherlands.

Beginning in September, Texas Radio Shortwave, Limpia Mountains Radio, and WRMI will begin a new series of Europirate relays on a different day of the week and on a different frequency. An announcement will be posted on TRSW’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/texasradiosw).

Texas Radio Shortwave sails in international waters off the South Texas coast. Its programs are regularly broadcast in North America and Europe.

Limpia Mountains Radio operates from a cave on Brooks Mountain in Jeff Davis County in far West Texas. It coproduces radio programs with Texas Radio Shortwave.

WBCQ Super station update

I was in contact with Allan Weiner July 28.

He tells me that a new TH576 tube has been ordered from Thales in France. He did not confirm whether the failed tube was under warranty. Delivery is expected in 4 weeks.

Regarding 9330 - he states that for now a small back-up transmitter is coupled directly to the Ampegon antenna. Allan did not answer my question regarding
its location or output power. I guess it might be 5 kW or even less and it is probably situated in the base of the antenna tower. It can't have been an easy job to connect the wiring and feeder lines. I think the big antenna is pointed in only one direction (270 degrees?) for the moment, until the 500 kW is back on air and everything is computer controlled again.

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98-RCUSB, July 28 at 1417, LRA-36 is back on this Wednesday after missing Saturday. Tune-in to military band and vocal, sounds like some kind of anthem. Usual fare, mostly music with frequent canned IDs. Listening first as a camper on someone in Moscow tuned exactly via Pardinho, Brasil, SDR but VP signal vs local line noise level. Recheck at 1513 I get on it direct, but slightly better S/N level at Campo, Brasil SDR, still VP. 1528 the Antártida song starts as if closing down, but 1532 continues with other music past 1540+ tune-out (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

``Welcome to the University of Biafra Live Broadcast`` is static label on the video. I listen to it ASAP:

2023 caller on direct line, last caller, you have 3 minutes, about to close. Extremely upset, yelling, partly in English? With reverb.

2026, no, this one is last caller: in English, says the Hausa and the British are listening, but drops out. Dead air, bit of music, host floundering but needs to close because has important meeting immediately. Heavily accented English. Keeps talking about zombies. Francophones vs Anglophones. Glenn Hauser logs July 27-28, 2021

** CANADA. 332-MCW kHz, July 27 at 0641, NDB dash and QT, Thunder Bay, Ont., is JBA but stronger than nearby co-channel IC Wichita (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, July 27 at 0635, RHC English is S9/+10 but JBM here under humbuzz. Unusually, 6100 and 6165 are still on, S9+10/20 sufficient, and S9+20/30 OK. At 0637, I find 5040 on but in Spanish, S9+10/20. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5025, July 27 at 0638, R. Rebelde like at 0238 is still dead air, or maybe trace of sup-torted modulation. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 7345-AM, July 28 at 0142, R. Martí in AM instead of DRM: maybe decided under circumstances another AM frequency would be more useful than throwing it away on DRM which no one is listening to, especially inside Cuba. Also on 7365, 7335, 6030, 5980 for a total of five instead of three. Much stronger on the 7s atop any jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KASHMIR [non]. 15170, July 27 at 1515, JBA carrier direct, but at 1521 via UTwente, usual bigsig S9+25 of Tuesday-only clandestine, Kashmir Civitas, via ROMANIA, exaggerated hypo-bass voice with strumming background, presumably Urdu (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 515-MCW kHz, July 27 at 0639 UT, NDB PN Ponca City is gone again. One can only wonder if ever any flight axually make use of it; and the others gone for months at a time but not forever (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2096 monitoring: ``From: Richard Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, From, the desk of Richard’s listening Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees. 0130-0159, Siren and moderate static noise, 5850 kHz, confirmed hearing World of Radio 2096, 0159, 5850 kHz, July 23 UT 2021 [Fri]

2230-2259, voice barely heard, 9955 kHz, 2230, 2258 (35442), 2259, 9955 kHz, July 25 UT 2021 [Sun]

0030-0059, QRN, static, 7730 kHz, S5, like on a train ride, 0059, 7730 kHz, July 26 UT 2021 [Mon]

0230-0259, busy with other SW stations, 5800 kHz, 0230 (55433),(55334), 0230, 5800 kHz, July 26 UT 2021 [Mon]

Good listening, Richard, July 27, 2021`` Next:

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support: thanks this week to Michael Newland, Morgantown KY, for a contribution via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com --- and comments: ``Thank you Glenn for your contributions to this great hobby. One may also contribute by MO or check in US funds on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. July 27 at 1520 UT, riveting testimony by officers on first day of January 6 hearings. I quickly surf to find which networx are carrying it live: MSNBC, CNN, CSPAN 1, even Fox `News`; of major broadcast nets only ABC, via KOCO here; and also NewsMax! But soon obvious they have only dipped into it briefly, back to own anti-American discussion, and labeling hearing as ``DEM-LED`` which is all they need to know to dismiss it; My-Pillow moron is still advertising there. As for Fox, I only checked it for a split second, but on AC360, CNN, Brian Stelter reported that Fox was also interrupting and talking over the hearing with their own mis-takes.

It`s also on NPR via KOSU. Around 1645 UT, I make a quick AM & FM scan on portable radio getting only stronger signals, and not a single other radio station is to be heard carrying it. Of course many would deny it since their format is some kind of music, sports or foreign language, but even the news/talk stations ignore it: without exception I think, they are all skewed toward the far-right. Possibly a deeper dive into weak daytime signals would have found one (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Re: ``4743, July 27 at 0236, JBA carrier vs CODAR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)`` --- soon replied other reports of it:

``Yes, observed exact 4743even carrier only around 0040 UT, when checked Peru stations nearby outlets at Vilhena central Brazil remotedly, Colombia, Bonaire and Florida Kiwi remotedly. Precise fq measured then at Cape Canaveral Perseus excellent radio gear. And break suffer Peru signal nearby also 4747.510 approx. noted TX on / off air with many breaks 2357-0012 UT. 73 wb`` - Wolfgang Bueschel

``[4743] Also heard here at 0140 27 July. Carrier only, no audio, amid heavy static crashes & CODAR --- Steven C Wood, E. Dennis, MA, 15 x 30 terminated Superloop antenna, Perseus SDR``

``Hello Glenn, I heard this carrier here too. Weak. 73 Lucio [Bobrowiec], Brasil`` posted at 1013 UT July 27; and later UT July 27: ``Hi all, Huanta 2000 seems on 4752 at 2313; local music, poor to fair. Sign off at 0039 [July 28] on 4752. Carrier on 4743 still there at 2314 [July 27]. 73 Lucio Brasil``.

4743 JBA carrier still there at 0146 UT July 28 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 0235 UT July 28

Glenn Hauser logs July 25-26-27, 2021

** CANADA. 346-MCW kHz, July 26 at 0609 UT, dash and YXL, 500-watt ND beacon at Sioux Lookout, Ontario is JBA. Hadn`t been able to hear this or any Canadian for weeks vs summer storm and local line noise level, so things are looking up. In winter it`s a regular not even logged every time heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CONGO. 6115, July 26 at 0556, JBA carrier, presumed R. Congo on earlier tonight. Yes, in fact Manuel Méndez, Spain later reports it from *0522 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, July 26 at 0556, S9+10/20 of dead air in English from RHC; 6165 and 5040 are off; 6060 DA with humbuzz; only 6000 remains, wrapping up English at 0557 and no doubt about to go off. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11880, July 26 at 2318 and later, NO signal from RHC English hour. A perfect excuse, besides ``something`s always wrong at RHC`` for my annual sarcastic Tribute to The Revolution: ``Patria o Suerte, ¡Pensaremos!``. I am still awaiting visual proof of this slogan scrawled on a surface anywhere on Cuba. Ahora más que nunca (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5025, July 27 at 0238, R. Rebelde with S9+20 of dead air. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. 4765 and 5040 are nominal (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Monday July 26, REE English with Justin Coe at 2211 resumes the `DX program` from a biweek ago, out-takes, as the original recording ran way over, when he responded to a second listener, Alan Roe in England. No, there was a not a farewell show for Alison Hughes, as things have been rather hectic. She started in 1990, took a break and came back 12/13 years ago. He will invite her back as a guest. Luís Martín, head of the external service, also took early retirement in February; and there is also a new head of the entire RTVE. Was going to play some music for this Alan, Blas Picón of blues harmonica who just appeared 11 July in Madrid. Boogie-woogie, plays at 2222 ``If You`re Not Around``; 2226 also acknowledges reply from Rodney Johnson thanking Coe for previously acknowledging his mail. Another showname suggestion: ``REEDX``. [But it`s NOT a DX program; how about ``Spainal-bag``? Nah?] Starts playing another music for him but only time for a semiminute of something about Chicago until timesignal, off and away. Also, Justin doesn`t know who in the large organization is sending out QSLs. Anyhow, so far our WOR iogroupies are batting 100% as only subjects of the mailbag. Or belay that, silly ballgame reference. I`m listening via Virginia remote, always better than direct to deep North America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, July 26 after Spain dispenses with English at 2230 I tune the Virginia remote to VOT, sufficient but not as good. Mostly music, but at 2237 the COVID PSA plays, still that ancient outdated ecording, ``vaccine yet to be found``; but if anyone believe that, it may impel more cautious behaviour. Sign-off announcement at 2249 has crosstalk from something, sounds like Brother Hystairical expostulating, maybe remote receiver overload. IS plays; 2256 pause and restart IS, one announcement in German before cutoff so not another hour or two tonight (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 326-MCW kHz, July 26 at 0612, 400-watt ND beacon MA at Midland TX is JBA. Had not been able to hear any beyond KS/OK for weeks in summer storm and local line noise level (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2096 monitoring: confirmed Sunday July 25 at 2000 on IRRS via AM Italia, into Padova SDR only S5.5 but better SNR than the stronger closer signal into Noale. Still on about over at 2028 so appears this time to have aired intact successfully.

NOT confirmed Sun July 25 at 2200 on WBCQ 6160-; instead, quick ID and right back to TOMBS. But WOR *is* playing on the Area 51 webcast. I notify Larry Will immediately, and he replies:

``Sorry Glenn, they are having a computer problem at the station so it will be B.S. until 7PM tonight [23 UT]. Lw`` --- and at 0302 UT Monday: ``I managed to get you an airing on 6160 at 0300 UTC Monday 7/26. Signal good here with a slightly unfortunate QRM from Cuba. Lw`` And at 0337: ``I managed to sneak in "Brother Stair's Way To Heaven" by Blind Paul (Paul Shalbetter, host of the classic show "Pan Global Wireless) after WOR 2096 before I switched the transmitter back to the B.S. Signal very good here in Maryland with occasional and persistent Cuba interference. Cheers, Lw``

Maybe we can stay at our old time of 0300 for better nighttime propagation altho 6165 QubaRM is a problem then -- and Cuba was on 6165 long before WBCQ picked 6160. Checked on an east-coast remote, WBCQ is stronger than RHC, vice versa out here. More below.

Also confirmed UT Monday July 26 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG direct.

Also confirmed UT Mon July 26 at 0130 on WRN webcast to N America.

Also confirmed UT Mon July 26 at 0230 on WRMIs: 7780 VG S9+10 to Maryland remote, VG S9+5/15 to UTwente; 5800, S9+10 to Bonaire SDR.

Also confirmed UT Mon July 26 at 0309 the special time of 0300 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6160-; by 0327 VP here with 6165 Cuba ACI even on LSB tuning. Next, not until Wednesday:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

** U S A. 3265+, 4790-, 6160-, 7490-, July 27 at 0239, all these WBCQs are missing but 9329.784 is still on poorly with something in English. Recheck at 0256, 4790, 6160 and 7490 are back on with TOMBS. ``WNCY is unlikely. It's solidly in the Appleton market (and might possibly run Green Bay spots), not likely to be running Milwaukee ads. Unless the Milwaukee event in question was Summerfest, which is of regional interest. But it doesn't happen until September. I was in Milwaukee last weekend & W262CJ has a pretty impressive signal`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Titans of TV: Farnsworth vs Sarnoff --- History Channel tends to be too tabloid, but I watched this docu-drama on first airing UT Monday July 26 at 0100-0200. Several repeats are scheduled.

``The Machines That Built America: “Titans of Television” History, 9 pm EDT [0100-0203 UT] --- The latest take on the That Built America franchise chronicles the 1930s feud between Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of the television, and David Sarnoff, a ruthless RCA exec who sought to buy the pioneer’s fledgling company and control the new medium.`` says Channel Guide. Yes, it paints Sarnoff as a real SOB and Farnsworth as a sad and not properly recognized victim. I guess we would never see this version of history on NBC.

``The Machines That Built America THCHD - Sun, 7/25, 8:00 PM CDT 1 hr 3 min "Titans of Television" New, 7/25/2021, History, Industry The rivalry between a merciless mogul and an unknown inventor triggers a social change in which people turn to television for entertainment instead of books, magazines or the theater as the two figures attempt to outdo each other.`` CDT Repeats per Titan TV:

UNIDENTIFIED. 15705, July 26 at 1417, JBA signal. Or, but here`s another report of this from Dan Sheedy, CA, via Bob Wilkner, NASWA: ``15705 unID 1417-30, 1435-1459* 19 July. Mostly quiet Chinese chat with soft pop & piano background during some announcements (website info, closing remarks), audio off 1430-35 with carrier left on. Also heard roughly same times 18 July, but not heard on 20 July during checks at 1415, 1433. Encore - WRMI Frequency change

The 1100 UTC broadcast of Encore on Friday has now moved back to 13:00 UTC on Tuesday [on 15770kHz].
This re-establishes a midweek transmission to most of the north-western hemisphere and should also improve propagation as the days shorten.

A big Thank You as ever to WRMI for their support of Encore - Classical Music on Shortwave.

ABC DRM test on MW in Australia

Australia: ABC Radio National (RN) is testing DRM on 747 kHz MW. This is reported to be from Wangaratta VIC (re griffinboi on YouTube and Twitter, who reported receiving it in Melbourne 21 July). (747 kHz is not on an existing RN frequency from this site, but 747 is a frequency used by 4 other stations in Australia).

Was decodable yesterday evening with some drop outs using the Kiwi SDR in Croydon VIC 25 July at 2030 UTC (0630 AEST). Carrying RN programming with texts:

"ABC Radio National"

"ABC is testing the future of radio"

"You're listening to the ABC DRM demonstration"

"ABC is looking to the future of radio"

"Today is 2021-7-25"

"Now it is 6:30 AEST"

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
19 - 25 July 2021

Solar activity was very low on 22 and 25 July with only B-class
flares observed. Low levels of solar activity were observed on
19-21, and 23-24 July due to C-class flare activity. A total of six
C-flares were observed this period, five C1 flares and a C4 flare at
24/0033 UTC. Regions 2845 (S15, L=195, class/area=Dso/60 on 21 July)
and 2849 (S18, L=058, class/area=Axx/20 on 22 July) were the primary
producers of C-class flare activity this period. A slow-moving CME
observed on 25 July from the vicinity of plage region 2848 (N21,
L=120 on 25 July) may disrupt the near-Earth solar wind environment
on 29 July. Multiple other CMEs were observed in LASCO coronagraph
imagery throughout the week, however, none were Earth-directed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was
normal to moderate throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached unsettled and active levels on 22
July due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet to unsettled
conditions were observed on 19-20 July, and quiet levels were
observed on 21 and 23-25 July under a nominal solar wind regime.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
26 July - 21 August 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low-to-low throughout the
outlook period with B-class flares expected and a chance for C-class
flares.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook
period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on
28-29 July due to positive polarity CH HSS influence and the
possible glancing blow of a CME from 25 July. Active conditions are
expected on 10 Aug, with unsettled conditions expected on 11 Aug,
due to recurrent negative polarity CH HSS influence. Unsettled
conditions are expected on 16-17 Aug due to recurrent positive
polarity CH HSS influence. Mostly quiet conditions are expected to
prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.
