Romania: out-of-service emitters update

Radiocom, the company ensuring the broadcast of RRI's programmes, has announced Galbeni transmitter has been brought back into service and all frequencies ensured by this transmitter are working properly.

The second transmitter, in Ţigăneşti (near Bucharest), is still out of service, and Radiocom is making efforts to remedy the situation.

Shortwave frequencies for broadcasts in Romanian, English (azimuth New York, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo), French (azimuth Montreal, Central Africa, Maghreb), German (azimuth Berlin), Spanish (azimuth Mexico, Madrid, Buenos Aires), Russia (azimuth Moscow, Novosibirsk), Arabic (azimuth Maghreb and Mashrek) and Chinese (azimuth Beijing).

We'll keep you in the loop and in the meantime invite you to tune in to RRI's broadcasts using the remaining working frequencies, online (including on demand) as well as via mobile apps and satellite.

Propagation News – 2 May 2021

Last week was characterised by relatively low sunspot numbers, but reasonably settled geomagnetic conditions. The solar flux index never rose above 80 all week, despite a large cluster of sunspots. This cluster, composed of regions 2818, 2820 and 2821, were responsible for some C-class solar flare activity, but never really grew into anything. By the time you read or hear this they will have rotated out of view.

The Kp-index started the week at five, thanks to the effects of a high-speed solar wind stream from a coronal mass ejection. This was relatively short-lived and the rest of the week saw more settled conditions with a maximum Kp-index of three and often zero.

HF conditions have been variable. There has been DX workable, as Norfolk ARC showed during last Saturday’s International Marconi Day. GB0CMS made more than 900 contacts on HF, including contacting the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Ecuador, Panama, the Falkland Islands, Australia and Indonesia. SSB activity on 10 metres has been reported as being relatively quiet, with the odd sporadic E contact into Europe. FT8 has thrown up a few contacts into South America during late afternoon and early evening.

Next week, NOAA predicts the SFI may dip again, perhaps down to 72-73. This weekend may see unsettled geomagnetic conditions with the potential for the Kp-index to rise to four or five due to coronal hole activity. However, once this clears we may expect a more settled Kp of two as the week progresses. Propquest shows that, according to the Chilton digisonde data, daytime MUFs over a 3,000km path are generally reaching the 18MHz band and occasionally 21MHz.
VHF and up:

Next week it will probably be very difficult to time the weather changes correctly. It will be a mix of classic April showers—in May!—and some longer periods of rain, but also weak ridges of high pressure or, more accurately, ‘cols’, between highs and lows. These are very rarely useful for tropo, but may facilitate temporary lifts in early mornings. The trend towards a showery weather pattern is likely to be good news for the rain scatter operators on the GHz bands.

With the arrival of May, expectations for sporadic E grow stronger. The daily blogs will begin this month on the Propquest website where a commentary about the location of jet streams and potential for sporadic E will be discussed, along with a chance to evaluate the new sporadic E probability index, or EPI, shown on the same website. Beams certainly help with weak sporadic E or multi-hop paths, but a strong opening will be found with even a colinear, so it’s not just for super-stations. If you’ve never worked sporadic E before, doing just one thing, checking 10m and 6m at teatime, will guarantee you the best chance of breaking your duck.

Last week we had a supermoon. No reason to get excited, this is simply a full Moon occurring within 10 percent of perigee. Perigee was last Tuesday so EME path losses will slowly rise all week. Moon declination is negative until Saturday so we’ll see lengthening Moon visibility windows and peak Moon elevations as the week goes on.

Two meteor showers to look out for this week. The Eta-Aquarids has a broad peak around 6 May with a good zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of 50, then the much smaller Eta Lyrids on the 8th. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

Tad Cook, K7RA, Seattle, reports: Sunspots have continued to appear every day after April 11 — the last day with no sunspots.

Average daily sunspot number rose this week from 35.1 to 47.6, and average daily solar flux also rose, from 78 to 79.2.

Geomagnetic indicators were quieter, with average daily planetary A index declining from 16.4 to 10.7. The most active day was April 25 with a planetary A index of 20.

Predicted solar flux over the next month is 77, 75, and 72 on April 30 – May 2; 70 on May 3 – 6; 72 on May 7 – 9; 73 on May 10 – 11; 74 on May 12 – 13; 77 on May 14; 79 on May 15 – 23; 78 on May 24 – 2, and 75 and 73 on May 28 – 29.

Predicted planetary A index 8 on April 30 – May 1; 15, 12, 12, and 8 on May 2 – 5; 5 on May 6 – 10; 8, 12, 20, and 30 on May 11 – 14; 15 on May 15 – 16; 12 on May 17; 5 on May 18 – 19; 15 and 10 on May 20 – 21; 5 on May 22 – 28, and 15, 12, and 10 on May 29 – 31. After that, things are quiet over the first week of June.

Here’s the geomagnetic activity forecast for April 30 – May 25 from F.K. Janda, OK1HH. The geomagnetic field will be:

quiet on May 18 – 19, 25
quiet to unsettled on May 5 – 11, 17, 24
quiet to active on April 30, May 12, 20 – 23
unsettled to active May (1 – 4,) 16
active to disturbed May 13 – 14, (15)
Solar wind will intensify on (April 30 – May 1),

May 3 – 5, (6 – 7, 10 – 11, 16,) 17 – 18, (21 – 25)

Remarks

* Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.

* Contradictory indications significantly reduce the accuracy of the forecast.

Jon, N0JK, in Kansas, reports:

“On April 26 @ 2100z I copied LU2FFD (FF97) on 50.313 MHz FT8 at –11 dB. Did not complete a contact. This was a sporadic E to TEP path."

Update from Frank, W3LPL:

“Propagation is somewhat better, but at times somewhat worse, as Solar Cycle 25 somewhat fitfully climbs toward solar maximum, likely in late 2024. Slowly improving propagation interrupted by more frequent and intense geomagnetic storms are both encouraging indicators that Solar Cycle 25 is starting to accelerate to solar maximum likely in late 2024.

“The recent sustained rise in SFI is a positive indicator that Solar Cycle 25 is finally starting to accelerate and gradually improve propagation on the higher bands. So far the improvement is minor, but the recent sustained increased SFI is good news and an indicator of likely significant improvement during the night on 20 and 30 meters this summer and generally improved propagation on 30 meters and above by the October/November contests.

“The solar flux adjusted for the varying distance between the earth and the sun, has been mostly in the high 70s and low 80s since mid-April. This slowly rising trend is likely to continue, and we’re likely to see adjusted SFI sustaining in the low to mid 80s or even higher by this summer.

“The other good news — yes, good news — is that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are now occurring much more frequently. More frequent CMEs are a reliable indicator of accelerating Solar Cycle 25 progress. Fortunately, CMEs significantly degrade propagation only when two conditions are met simultaneously: (1) the CME is earth directed, and (2) the orientation of the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field is southwards (–Bz).

“By now, May QST has arrived in everyone’s mailbox. Because NASA now forecasts solar maximum in 2024, you may want to get out the red pencil and revise the four occurrences of ‘2025’ in my article to ‘2024.’”

WB8VLC reported from Salem, Oregon, on April 24:

“Another 10 meter good day. Today 10 is open again on both SSB to South America (Chile) and CW to New Zealand, with great signals even though the solar numbers are nothing to brag about.

“A quick listing of today’s openings up to this time and the band is still open but I’m just listening now.

“Two contacts are fine for me today, as I don’t like being a DX Piggy and I’d rather listen and let others have at it while I do some radio programming on some new 6 meter FM land mobile radios, and while I’m listening now the band is still going long to ZL on CW, and Chile on SSB:”

Earlier he reported:

“This is a small report what with me only having a couple of hours of time to get on the radio these days on weekends and week-day real work-work and these are stations that I worked during my breaks.

“April 22 on 10-meter FT8 was interesting, with a nice opening to Indonesia on 28.074.

“Even though it’s FT8, the Indonesians were audible, with tones actually moving my K3’S S-meter to around 5/5.

“April 20 was a great day with activity on 29.6 FM to New Mexico and Brazil using my cross-coupled 10 FM to 220 remote base while at work during breaks.

“The weekend of April 18 was typical of what I experience every weekend, SSB and CW to South America with strong sigs for hours.

“My setup is a K3S with homebrew LDMOS amp at ~300 W on SSB/CW into a 4el OWA Yagi at 30 feet.

“For 29.6 FM, I use a Motorola Maxtrac with 60 W out that is cross-connected to a 220 MHZ Maxtrac set up as a remote base system, so I can operate 10 FM from work during lunch time, and I use the same 4-element OWA Yagi as I use on SSB/CW when operating FM:”

A further wikilink: ``Esperanza Base (Spanish: Base Esperanza, 'Hope Base') is a permanent, all-year-round Argentine research station in Hope Bay, Trinity Peninsula (in Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula). It is one of only two civilian settlements in Antarctica (the other being the Chilean Villa Las Estrellas). The base's motto is Permanencia, un acto de sacrificio ('Permanence, an act of sacrifice').`` Civilian, really? Then why are all the LRA36 staff bearing military ranx? as specified with a QSL I quote on WOR 2083. Of course, obsessed with the Malvinas war. And I have never heard that motto uttered on air.

Second program -- or repeat of the first one? continues: 1545 song; 1600 sharp, ID as ``Nacional Antártida Argentina, en todo el país, la radio pública`` --- this slogan meant to imply that Argentina straddle two continents; music. 1605 maybe this-day-in-history about Malvinas war, Real Madrid; but then current headlines about Burkina Faso, pandemia en India, Oscars, and more talk. 1622 song, 1625 ID, more song until chopped off the air at 1628.6* (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9710, April 28 at at 0104, RHC Spanish still here, S9+20 totally blotting any sign of CRI Spanish via East Turkistan, to Latin America, where there could be more of a clash. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Again on 9710, not 9650, April 28 at 2210 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, April 28 at 1441, S9 of dead air. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ERITREA [non]. 17544.95479, another Wednesday April 28 at 1538, so taking a break from LRA36, another attempt to hear Bayto Yaikl via RMI as still allegedly scheduled via FRANCE. UTwente synch locks onto steady frequency as above, but it`s S5 = noise level, far too weak to copy. Kuwait SDR also gets JBA carrier at 17545 minus 48-53-60 Hz. Maybe JBA carriers audible also at Bucharest, Thessaloniki, but too weak to lock onto. Is it any better in Eritrea? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, April 28 at 0106, NO signal from REE to North America; altho it held up well into Ladino[non] by 2215 April 27, and supposed to last entire transmission until 0200*. 11940 for S America is a JBA carrier? now, no good either (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed April 28 at 2129, REE is S3-S7 in Castilian, asking for reports via whatsapp! also // 11940 S3-S6, while 15520 S5-S7 has split into Arabic. 2220 all four rejoin for English: 17855 S9 but deep fades to S3, Justin Coe introes with news, later feature to be about regional elexions next week in Madrid. After Burkina Faso item, 2204 over to Alison Hughes for world news as if BF were not? Spaniard long resident in Gaza working for NGO to aid Palestinians has been arrested and held without charges by Israel. 2211 pandemic in India, still VG signal on 17855 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, April 28 at 2158, nothing but RTTY; 2212 no RTTY and still no VOT in English to America. That leaves the final repeat at 0300 on 7275 INTRUDING into our hamband which seems to be more reliable. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler, awry at Ankara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7602-USB and stronger 7615-USB, UT Wednesday April 28 at 0109, the two paramilitary ``Civil`` Air Patrol nets again, some of the stations beeping at each end of transmission, saving them the trouble of uttering ``over`` over and over, just like CBers (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2083 monitoring: anyone hear the Wed 1030 on WRMI 5850, April 28?

Confirmed Wed Apr 28 at 2100 on WRMI 7780, VG S9 into Maine SDR, no signal into UTwente but strong continuous pulsing noise. At 2128 direct, S7 vs S5 noise level.

Also confirmed 21 seconds behind Wed Apr 28 after 2100 on WBCQ 7490 minus 65-68 Hz and only S3 at KB0FX SDR in Missouri; direct at 2128, S5-S7.

Also confirmed Wed Apr 28 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, S7-S9 direct and no jamming audible. Next, and last:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

AM/Mediumwave frequency change (918 kHz to Europe)

Hello There from IRRS/NEXUS!

1.) We want to inform you that we have received final clearance from the Italian authorities to move from 594 kHz to 918 kHz, and we moved our Medium Wave service to 918 kHz as of today, daily from 19:00-23:10 CET (17:00-21:10 UTC, summer).

Due to lengthy international coordination involving the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and all European countries that we cover, the process of changing from 594 to 918 kHz took nearly one year to complete.

According to initial tests carried earlier in the week, 918 kHz is propagating
much better and suffers less interference, so that we may expect much betterlong-distance reception, especially to the north of Europe. This will probably nearly double the coverage, and we may expect the occasional listener to tune into also from farther away in Northern Germany, Central and Northern France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, etc.

European Gospel Radio and NEXUS-IBA schedules are available at:

https://www.nexus.org/schedules

2.) On May 8 and May 15, 2021, between 20:00-20:30 CET (18:00-18:30 UTC) on 7290 kHz to EU, N Africa and Mid East and on 918 kHz to Europe we will be airing a very special program produced by Ms Rexella Van Impe (wife of the late Jack Van Impe evangelist).

On this occasion, we are releasing our new EGR (European Gospel Radio) e-QSL card, for correct reception reports of any European Gospel Radio program (religious programs only) received on AM/Medium Wave and Shortwave from May 8, 2021 onward.

All other reception reports will be acknowledged with our "Stay home, stay safe: Listen to Shortwave" e-QSL card.

PLEASE NOTICE: We accept reception reports **ONLY** by email to reports (at) nexus (dot) org.

Glenn Hauser logs April 27, 2021

** CUBA. 13634 & 13766 approx., April 27 at 1416, just a trace of scratchy spurblobs out of 13700-AM. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9710, April 27 at 1455, RHC Spanish S9+10 on new frequency! Ex-9650 missing. Another error, experiment or permanent change? Same transmitter a few days ago tried 9640 instead of 9650. As I researched then, 9640 would have been conflict-free for the morning 1100-1500 transmission. So is 9710 better? NO, the big 3 references agree that CNR1 from SZG sites runs 1100-1805; also Iran in Urdu at 1250-1420 due east from Sirjan.

9710 might also show up for 21-05 tardemisión; clashes then would be CNR1 until 2330, and CRI in Portuguese & Spanish via EAST TURKISTAN, land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uyghurs and other Moslems, at 0000-0300. 9640 would have clashed with China at 21-23. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Anyhow, this revacates 9650 for GUINEA 06-24, if and when they can get it on.

9710, later at 2219, RHC is indeed also afternooning instead of 9650, but no China QRM audible. Will it last more than one day? Should be problematic after 0000 with China to Latin America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY. From Alfredo Cotroneo, IRRS, April 27:

``Hi Glenn, We have received final approval for our new frequency. We will be moving from 594 to 918 kHz (daily from 1900 to 2300 CET [17-21 UT]) effective April 28, 2021. 918 kHz will be cleaner and propagate better into Central and Northern Europe at night.

WOR will also be moved from 594 to 918 kHz, at the usual times as previously scheduled. Bests. Alfredo

I.e. for WORLD OF RADIO, UT: Friday 2030; Saturday 1801 with SW 7290 & 14580 Bulgaria; Sunday 2000. I already pointed out other stations on 917/918; hope he`s right about improvement (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9+, April 27 at 0605, VON is gone. I suppose there is no point in re-non-logging this as more often than not, it is begone. Till the next (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ROMANIA. Re RRI frequencies missing, Stephen Luce replies:

``Glenn, RRI now has English advisory about the transmitter outage: https://www.rri.ro/en_gb/emitters_out_of_service-2636082

They also included the advisory at the end of their 0000 English newscast UT April 27, as heard here in Houston on 7375. No signal heard on 9550 at the same time. Later just before 0300 I could hear the RRI IS with an extremely weak signal on 9850 via the UTwente SDR, nothing on 7375. Reception above 7 MHz has been terrible the past week or so, whether listening here in Houston or via UTwente.

The current RRI transmitters were installed in 2008, so relatively youthful for SW. RRI also had a transmitter outage for several days at the beginning of A21. I fear that continued problems might lead to more pressure to shut down SW output. Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

Viz.: ``Dear friends, Radiocom, 2 of the 5 emitters transmitting RRI’s broadcasts, one in Ţigăneşti (near Bucharest) and another one in Galbeni (eastern Romania), are out of service, Radiocom, the company transmitting Radio Romania International’s programmes has announced.

This will affect a number of shortwave frequencies for RRI’s broadcasts in Romanian, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese.

Radiocom has given assurances it is making efforts to bring the emitters back into service. We’ll keep you updated on the situation and invite you to tune in to our working frequencies and our online broadcasts (including on demand), via the download mobile applications available in Google Play and App Store, via Eutelsat 16A and via your land and mobile phones.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, April 27 at 2210, wow, REE is inbooming S9+25 in interview with someone American-accented. Tue at 2200 should be the Ladino service but they are defaulting to castellano. For once the N American frequency is holding up from local ``midnight`` and better than the others: 15520 to ME JBA; 11940 to SAm only S5-S7. 17855 is still VG S9 by 2226. We shall see whether a fluke or hold up into summer season. Of course we need that to happen at 2200 on M/W/F when there is token English. BTW, at 2228, no signals at all on the 18 MHz hamband. If any Spaniards had been trying, they surely would have been audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2083 monitoring; next:
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also ITALY!

** VANUATU. 11835, April 27 at 0606, no signal from RV X 3. Nor on 7260 which should have switched to 3945 at 0559. No JBA carrier on 7890, RV X 2, either (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** YEMEN [non]. 11860, Apr 27 at 2220 something JBA, unseems // 9710 RHC nor as spur de 11850 RHC which is weak dead air and no spur either on 11840. Also unusually no residual jamming audible on 11860 after Martí finish at 2200. So this is probably Republic of Yemen Radio out of SA`UDI ARABIA; as the Qur`an program on 11820+ is a good S9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

STEPHEN COLBERT interview on FRESH AIR, with Terry Gross:

APRIL 27, 2021 --- Catching Up with Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert has been taping 'The Late Show' without a studio audience during the pandemic — but he's not always alone. Sometimes his wife Evie is in the room. If she laughs, he knows he's on the right track. "I got into show business in a way to not be alone. Like a lot of comedians, I'm a bit of a broken toy," he says. Colbert and Terry Gross catch up on the past four years, since the Trump administration and COVID-19 changed his comedy.

Glenn Hauser logs April 26-27, 2021

** CUBA. 1040, re my question with log of R. Mayabeque, why did Cuba create two new provinces around Habana a decade ago? Wolfgang Bueschel replies: ``from wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayabeque_Province#/media/File:Mapacarr_mayabeq.png

``The reduction of the distances between the municipal capitals and their provincial capital facilitates the management and procedures of the population. The capitals of the new provinces would be Artemisa and San José de las Lajas``. Tnx, NWK. Now, what does Lajas mean? Flagstones or slabs, also a TV site in Veracruz. Not clear what Saint Joseph have to do with those; wiki? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5040, April 27 at 0137, this RHC still SNAFU: only S9-S7 of dead air, occasional running-H2O QRM; yet too strong and too late to be India. The other Cuban 60s? 5025 at 0138 is S9+20/30; 4765 at 0139 is S9+20/30, undermodulated, distorted and with the plus/minus ~18 kHz ratchety spurblobs. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. But immediately at tune in, ``La Onda de la Alegría, de La Habana``, nice progressive slogan, i.e. Castro says, You shall be happy in Commie dictatorship! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 7340-7345-7350, April 27 at 0210, DRM noise is still on from Grimesland, rather than scheduled 0200*; R. Martí for all the traitorous DRM listener in Cuba, rather than the two old-fashioned AM signals nearby. At least I don`t hear jamming noise against it, altho would be hard to tell the difference (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. eQSL received for 5185-AM, 2302-2430 UT April 25-26:

``Hello Glenn - I'm pleased you heard the real -- not pirated -- VPV program (episodes 2014-2021). Your report's correct and here's your eQSL. Look for a relay of the first 10 episodes -- 1994-2003 -- again this weekend. Yours truly, The Mystery Pirate, I am a mystery to myself``

https://www.w4uvh.net/MPR_VoiceofPanchoVilla_eQSL_2014-21_Hauser.pdf or #122 via: http://www.worldofradio.com/QSL.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, April 26, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6974.913-AM, April 27 at 0109, S7-S9 but undermodulated talk and music with heavy beat; still past 0128. These say it`s Nowhere Radio, on air as early as 2210 April 26: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,80828.0.html I also logged it 23 hours ago, last night on same frequency within margin of error (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 7470-AM, April 27 at 0212, the unmistakable urgent sound of Josiah, his anti-Christ pirate Station YHWH back on the air! But unreadable, too weak S9-S5, and too undermodulated.

Had been unheard since last August? But was first reported back here at 0334 April 25: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,80722.0.html I looked for him next night = last night, April 26 after 0330 but no show then. Following my notice to the WOR iogroup tonight, Walt Salmaniw replies:

``I checked several times between 04 and 05 last night, with no luck. Tonight, there he is at 0313 with the usual very low modulation/tinny audio. Fair/good level into Victoria. Unfortunately, 41 m is marred here by some local possible BPL interference between 7375 and 8065 kHz. Poor into Masset, but another hour until LSS there. Walt`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 100.7, KPNC Ponca City is tough to hear driving around Enid on caradio, tnx to mere KGWA translator on 100.9. Certain spots it`s slightly weakened, and maybe KPNC slightly strengthened. Also depends on how much KGWA is modulating per moment. FM bandwidth on PL-880 too wide; off-tune to 100.6 no help, then abutting 100.5. OKC. Circa 1919 UT April 26, I did hear a KPNC ID and a ``Country 101``, no sign of KASE Austin TX as I somehow heard a biday earlier (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** ROMANIA. 9850, April 27 at 0300, JBA carrier to remote in Maryland, maybe RRI English as scheduled to NAm; NO signal on 7375, 11825, or 15330-DRM. UTwente is not hearing any 7375 or 9850. Per Aoki, 9850 could also be CNR1 jamming vs Sound of Hope, or PBS Qinghai in Bod-Tibetan from Xining site.

RRI Spanish during 0200 hour also supposed to be on 4 frequencies, but none audible at Boa Vista TWR SDR: 9700, 11780=Brasil!, 11945, 15330. RRI notified Spanish listeners today that only two transmitters were down, one each at Tsiganeshti and Galbeni, as publicized on AER list:

https://www.rri.ro/es_es/dos_transmisores_estan_fuera_de_servicio-2636081

Can`t find any advisory about English: This page has schedules of several past seasons, of no use now, and also very old notices of outages, but not currently! https://www.rri.ro/en_gb/RadioRomaniaInternational/how_to_listen-309 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 17855, April 26 at 2219, during token Monday English from REE, so-called NAm frequency is JBA carrier; maybe better at Walterboro target? 15520 JBA; 11940 S6-S1 so best of the worst; 11685 JBA S1-S3. Should be on 9690;

Altho Greece 9420 also USward is not doing very well either at S3-S5. K index at 22 & 24 going up from 1 to 2, solar flux was 80, after G1 storming. Presumed toward N America, but can`t look up the azimuth or CIRAF in HFCC as ERT is another station withdrawn: only one frequency left on SW, so why bother to coördinate? I`ll tell you: to discourage others from taking it over, like Russia and China which are registered a number of hours on 9420. Azimuths are beyond the scope of WRTH and EiBi. The full Aoki/NDXC does show VOG beam angles: 323 degrees right across North America with the odd power of 170 kW (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, April 26 at 2218, VOT music is VP S5-S7, no RTTY now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2083 monitoring: Richard Langley, NB, already confirms the one I missed, Sunday April 25 at 2300 on WRMI 7780, among his weekly multi-hour recording of that frequency. Next:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support: thanks this week to Dan Sheedy, Encinitas, California, for a generous contribution to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, ``Thanks for keeping accurate, reliable and timely DX info available all these years. Enclosed is a bit to help out all the WOR activities. Cheers from the Beach``

One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12190-USB, April 27 at 0144, 2-way in colloquial Spanish vs CODAR swirshes; cambio (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 0422 UT April 27

Glenn Hauser logs April 25-26, 2021

** CANADA. 413-MCW kHz, April 26 at 0611 UT, dash and YHD, 250-watt ND beacon at Dryden, Ontario. Nearest Blitz is a front ENE of Bahamas out into Atlantic, but some storm noise still a problem. At least now I can ID this as well as PR, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 5040, April 26 at 0215, this RHC still out of order, S9 of dead air, also suffering splash from 5050 WWRB gospel huxter, active only UT Sun & Mon. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, April 26 at 0606, RHC English with humbuzz infesting this transmitter; 6000 off already; 6100 & 6165 both OK at S9+10. 5040 in wrong language Spanish, S9+20. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7254.9+, April 26 at 0608, VON AWOL again in Hausa (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 5185-AM, April 25 at *2302, Voice of Pancho Villa comes on at the schedule promised by Mystery Pirate Radio, really. It`s S8-S9 via the NA5B remote in Maryland, while a quick-check direct at 2348 finds nothing but a JBA carrier. I log in detail, dispensing with quotation marx all over the place:

2302, Hola, hola, hola, VPV ID in English and in Spanish. YL offers eQSL to mysterypirateradio@gmail.com Each VPV episode is introduced by year in real Spanish, starting now with 2014, and theme. A bit of William Tell Overture; 2306 Star Wars theme; something about working for free.

Intro #15. From Fiesta Motor Inn, no Tom Kneitel this year; kneel down toward Enid, Oklahoma. Faux-female voice, internet killing radio.

2311, something about Enid, I was there. 2312 eQSL address again with music background; Spanish VPV ID, #16, theme. Jack Nicholson says Franco has been dead for over 25 years. Pancho mentions Chihuahua dog or Yogi Berra. Mentions of Austin TX, Berkeley CA.

2317, make America great again so must be from Trump era now; fake Glenn Hauser speaks; I love to watch.

2321, Spanish ID and #17; English ID from Fiesta Motor Inn, pink & purple room. Trump wants to deport, can gh help? This gh stammers a lot unlike the real one. Something about wieners.

2330, VPV theme extended. 2332 Spanish ID, #18. At Doubletree Inn instead, about Trump & wall; Melania`s dowry. AIR interview with Trump voice culled from real clips, mostly unresponsive.

2341, something about female sexuality; wall around Ethiopia?

2345, standard disclaimer, theme, #19, BBC ID and timesignal; a skit but details unnoted for a while. Unusually low-key, kind of drags.

2357, gh running for president?, uh, uh, uh

UT April 26: 0000 interview with ghost of Reagan as if about Trump

0005, CQDX in code, and Arnie Coro DXers Unlimited real recorded opening when he was in good voice; about something on 6m in S Africa; then clip of gh really opening WOR #2000 milestone on Sept. 19; interview with Greta; gh will save the world.

0013, outro VPV in Spanish for dos mil catorce, dos-cero-uno-cuatro; MPR QSL address. 0015 VPV for 20-21, retard alert. Something about COVID; YL visits gh in Enid; both Pancho & gh have ED, o yeah? We are now in this year`s episode which I already reported about when it originally aired, also on WBCQ. Runs until theme stops at 0028, a bit more theme fragment, and off the air at 0029*.

All the above written before looking at other reports: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,80795.0.html

And just before publishing or sending the above to MPR received this from them:

MPR - Voice of Pancho Villa
Apr 26 at 4:56 PM
Mystery Pirate <mysterypirateradio@gmail.com>
To: Glenn Hauser <wghauser@yahoo.com>

Hello Glenn - You're a program producer -- World or Radio -- so you know you're at the mercy of whatever station agrees to broadcast the program. If a station wanted to sandwich barnyard sounds between the WOR intro and outro and broadcast that at a date/time/freq you'd publicized, there'd be nothing you could do. Except never again send that station program audio.

That was the situation with an MPR-VPV relay last Saturday. The station operator thought it would be "fun" to mix his own content with the VPV program -- episodes 1994-2003 -- that he agreed to relay. Pirating a pirate station, I guess.

It would have been funny, except some of those early VPV episodes haven't been heard in their entirety on the airwaves in at least a decade, and many people looked forward to hearing them.

The intact episodes were relayed yesterday by a different operator on 6925U, but I received only one report. I hope more than this one listener heard the program.

There's an operator located West of the Rockies who may relay the three programs next weekend. That would be something different for DXers because most free radio stations are located in the Eastern US. Yours truly, The Mystery Pirate, I am a mystery to myself`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6974.914-AM, April 26 at 0218, BA music at S7-S8, unID pirate, seems with double-carrier on BFO. Other reports earlier on 6974.9 as Nowhere Radio, but none this late: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,80796.0.html (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 3185-USB, April 26 at 0311, pirate music S8-S9 via KB0FX SDR in MO; 0315 vocal music looping, off at 0322*. NO reports in HFU, but maybe same pirate as the other night with unauthorized Pancho Villa. Tnx to Brother Scare and WWRB for pioneering this OOB non-tropical SWBC channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [non?]. Re: ``An FM bandscan while viewing Kites Over Enid festival in a field north-central Enid, April 24 after 1837 UT, includes:

100.7, Stillwater ad and ``101 Country, KASE`` ?? Sure sounded like that, but has to be Ponca City, where the call has always been KPNC. Obscured by recently activated local KGWA translator on 100.9; while Stillwater really has an also obscured one on 101.1``

Terry Colgan in Austin TX replies: ``KASE 101, 100.7, Austin, TX``

This is VERY strange! No 423-mile Es or tropo DX to be expected at this midday, and I DID just hear a Stillwater ad. Meteor scatter temporarily overriding KPNC?? It certainly did not seem so. Possibly KPNC has acquired liners from KASE since they are both country on 100.7 yet branding as 101? I`ll have to listen some more to KPNC. WTFDA FM database shows somewhat different slogans for KASE:

``KASE-FM 100.7 AUSTIN TX HD COUNTRY KASE 101, TODAY'S COUNTRY 100.0 100.0 363.0 363.0 30-19-10 97-48-06 11D8 KASE-FM Austin's #1 for New Country Country``

``KPNC 100.7 PONCA CITY OK COUNTRY 101 COUNTRY 25.0 25.0 77.0 77.0 36-46-59 97-04-15`` (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

** PUERTO RICO. 391-MCW kHz, April 26 at 0612 UT, 1000-watt NDB, DDP in Dorado. Often but not always heard, and not always logged. Getting at least one from CANADA, q.v. at same time. Remains my only LA MW/LW beacon, not even a Mexican (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2083 monitoring: Ivo Ivanov, near Kostinbrod, Bulgaria, reports:

``SECRETLAND, Very good signal of World of Radio#2083 via SPL Secretbrod on April 24

Also confirmed Sunday April 25 at 2000 on ``IRRS Shortwave`` via Challenger Radio, 594 kHz MW, Villa Estense, Italy, good via local-range Noale KiwiSDR.

Also confirmed Sun Apr 25 just in time at 2226, the 2200 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6159.904, on NA5B remote in Maryland showing SAM carrier at minus 96 Hz.

Also confirmed UT Mon Apr 26 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG direct.

Also confirmed UT Mon Apr 26 after 0130 on WRN webcast to NAm.

Also confirmed UT Mon Apr 26 at 0230 on WRMIs: 5800 VG S9+20/30 to Bonaire SDR; 7780 VG S9+10 to Maryland SDR, but no signal to UTwente.

Next, sorry, now no SWBCs rest of Monday, or Tuesday:

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support: thanks this week to Dan Sheedy, Encinitas, California, for a generous contribution to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, ``Thanks for keeping accurate, reliable and timely DX info available all these years. Enclosed is a bit to help out all the WOR activities. Cheers from the Beach``

One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. 9840, April 26 at 1436, praise music at S5-S7 via Missouri SDR --- certainly not Turkey nor off-frequency Vietnam, not a trace of them, rather WHRI as registered A-21 for extensive usage of 9840, but had been off the air or at least never heard anywhere/anywhen, since season began. Aoki shows at this hour it could only be on 9840 day 7 which is Saturday, but this is Monday. HFCC does not try to break it down, just available at 12-20 UT every day to CIRAF 4,5 and 9, E Canada and Greenland, 100 kW at 25 degrees.

1446, Kimberly Ann (sp?) comes on with gospel-huxtering and ID as World Harvest Radio, P O Box 12, South Bend, Indiana 46624, yak and yak including Revelation refs past 1455; 1459 WHR ID again and music only; 1503 KimAnn is back with outro; 1504 finally the old completely outdated canned ID as WHRI, Cypress Creek, South Carolina, LeSEA Broadcasting along with `Onward Xian Soldiers` war-mongering theme; and 1506* cuts off the air uncovering weak Turkish, confirmed as VOT at UTwente where it`s strong; 1512 mentions Joe Biden, wonder why?

Anyhow, proof that FBC`s WHRI is not completely dead yet. Maybe proving to would-be buyer WBCQ that it can still funxion? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VENEZUELA. 6205, April 26 at 0142 via Bonaire SDR, ROCV S6 with tropical music. SAM shows carrier 30 Hz off; it had been plus, but my notes seem to say minus, so not sure. FRW rejects my reports of this as not pirate but I`ve yet to see any proof it be legal. Question is, can it be a pirate if location is not secret? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
19 - 25 April 2021

Solar activity ranged from very low to R1 (Moderate) over the
reporting period. Region 2816 (S24, L=262, class/area Dai/120 on 19
Apr) produced an M1/Sn flare at 19/2342 UTC, the largest of the
period. The impulsive flare produced both a Type II and Type IV
radio sweep. Subsequent coronagraph imagery indicated any ejecta
from the event was not Earth-directed. However, the Region would go
on to produce a C3/1f flare on 22/0921 UTC that would also produce a
Type II and Type IV radio sweep. Analysis and modeling of this event
suggested CME effects would reach Earth over 25 Apr. Over the next
few days, Region 2816 would continue to slowly decay. No other CME
signatures observed in available coronagraph imagery suggested a
component on the Sun-Earth line.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at
normal to high levels. High levels were observed on 19-25 Apr before
geomagnetic activity in response to a passing CME caused flux to
drop to normal to moderate levels on 26 Apr.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm
levels. G1 (Minor) storm conditions were first observed late on 23
Apr during a transition from a CIR into a negative polarity CH HSS
following a period of peak total magnetic field strength of 11 nT
while Bz reached as far south as -10 nT. A second isolated period of
G1 (Minor) storm conditions was observed early on 25 Apr during the
onset of influence from a CME that left the Sun on 22 Apr and was
first observed at L1 at 24/2221 UTC. Solar wind parameters increased
abruptly to a total magnetic field strength of 11 nT and Bz dropped
to -8 nT. Solar wind speeds increased to ~490 km/s and would
fluctuate between ~460-500 km/s through the end of the reporting
period. A negative polarity CH HSS produced active conditions on 19
Apr and unsettled conditions on 20-21 Apr. Wind speeds from the HSS
decreased from ~650 km/s on 20 Apr to under 450 km/s by 22 Apr. Only
quiet conditions were observed on 22 Apr.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
26 April - 22 May 2021

Solar activity is expected to be low with a slight chance for
moderate activity from Region 2820 (S22, L=210, class/area Dai/80 on
25 Apr) over 26 Apr - 01 May, when the region will rotate around the
W. limb.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to range from moderate to high. High levels are likely on
14-22 May due to activity associated with an anticipated negative
polarity CH HSS. Normal to moderate levels are likely for the
remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G2
(Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels. Active conditions are likely on
26 Apr due to waning CME effects. Active conditions are again likely
on 02-03 May and unsettled on 04 May under influence from a positive
polarity CH HSS. A SSBC is expected to cause unsettled conditions on
11 May and negative polarity CH HSS influence is expected to cause
active conditions on 12 May, G1 (Minor) conditions on 13 May, G2
(Moderate) conditions on 14 May before decreasing to active
conditions on 12-17 May as CH HSS effects wane. Another negative
polarity CH HSS is expected to cause active conditions on 20 May and
unsettled conditions on 21 May. The remainder of the outlook period
is expected to be at quiet levels.
