Glenn Hauser logs May 30-31, 2020

** OKLAHOMA. 89.1-WBFM, May 30 at 2014 UT, 205-watt H&V Enid translator K206CA surprising with gospel song in Spanish, 2017 back to English. Noticed as I am bandscanning futilely for sporadic E DX. This is the Oasis Network, primary KNYD 90.5 Tulsa market, 80/80 kW Broken Arrow. But it can`t be an off-air pickup due to our semi-local on 90.5, KBVV Goltry. Oasis is also on 88.1, 0/50 kW KMSI Moore, more audible here vs KWOU Woodward. There is not a word of Spanish on the Oasis website, unless they be the names of founder David Ingles, depending on how he pronounce them, but his music is in English (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 88.3-WBFM, May 30 at 2015 UT, 250-watt Enid translator K202BY, is spreading out between 87.7 and 88.9 on the DX-398 as I attempt to check ``open`` frequencies for sporadic E DX. WTFDA FM database still has this as a Family Radio satellator of KEBR 88.1 in California! Despite my first report Feb 1 of transfer on the air to KJIL 99.1 Copeland KS, as in ``Jesus Is Love``. Normally it only ruins adjacents 88.1 and 88.5 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SAO TOME E PRINCIPE. 9830, May 31 at 0634, African language under NSS RTTY: it`s DW in Hausa relay at 0630-0700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, May 30 at 2203, no signal from VOT English to us, just NSS RTTY. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. Local noise blob has fortuitously drifted upward so that only its edge barely bother 9830 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 475.09-CW kHz, May 31 at 0636 UT, Dave Frantz has resumed his very slow Morse code beacon at WWRB Manchester TN, ``WA4SZE COM WA4SZE/BEACON``. I tune past here almost every night, and last time heard was December 10, 2019 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 18150-USB, May 30 at 2200, KJ4BJ, ham in Tennessee in contact with 9Z4AH in Trinidad, unheard. QRZ.com shows antennas and ``KJ4BJ USA flag USA, ROBERT J JORDAN, DAYTON, TN 37321 USA`` at https://www.qrz.com/lookup/kj4bz Sporadic E opening; can`t compare to 15825 WWCR Nashville, which has just gone off, but 13845 is very poor. Dayton is 110 miles ESE of Nashville, roughly between Chattanooga and Knoxville; and site of the infamous ``monkey trial``.

18160-USB, May 30 at 2207, KJ4BJ has QSYed to here, contacting JBA HP9SAM in Panamá; only activity on the band (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 28433-USB, May 31 at 1824, good steady ham signal discussing tubes etc. with unheard contact, no calls, overs or beeps, but finally closing at 1833 as ``W6SCC, 10-3``. So sporadic E from California? No: ``W6SCC USA Guy B Coleman, Tucson, AZ 85745 USA``. Mentioned hearing close Colorado on 10m, mode Es? Certainly. Now there is a 70+ MHz MUF over New Mexico or so. Seemed the OSOB until:

28380-USB, May 31 at 1834, even stronger unID ham, S9+20 discussing 10-10 net`s declining membership (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2036 monitoring: still no confirmation from Ivo or anyone of Saturday 1300 on 15770 WRMI; but at least this has finally been entered on the WRMI skedgrid.

Confirmed UT Sunday May 31 at 0300 on WRMI 5800, VG S9+10/20.

Next nominal airing at 0315 UT Sun on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, much delayed due to open-ended durations of various preceding hamshows: good signal at Indiana SDR, first check at 0302, TWIAR, and then Houston AMSAT; 0402 ARRL news; but WOR in progress at 0427 about 16 minutes into so must have started circa 0411. Next:

** U S A. 5085, UT Sun May 31 at 0017, WTWW-2 with `Theatre Organ [NOT] In The Ozarx`, in progress, S9+30/40! but suppressed/distorted = suptorted modulation. Probably would be in good clear $tereo on webcast, but not convenient to access. Last week this show never appeared during 2-hour window (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VIETNAM [non]. 7315, May 31 at 0008, VOV English relay is S9+10 but just barely modulated; WHRI transmitter ailing? Or no one turning up the volume (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 2097.3, May 31 at 0619 UT, single-letter beacon A is JBA in noise level, every dekasecond. Altho a reliable source has assured us it is not heard as a local signal in Quartzsite AZ, I see in classaxe.com it is still placed in Quartzite [sic] with a period of 10.14 seconds, last logged by anyone there 2020-08-05. QZ is about 17 miles from the CA border on I-10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4875-USB, May 31 at 0021, two tactical calls also exchanging uteblaap traffic, fonetikaly: 40W and ZPM; seems like there has been a MARS net here? No QRM from the 4875 ZY, too early? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs May 30, 2020

** CHINA. 13550, May 30 at 1508, JBA carrier, probably a CNR1 jammer against Sound of Hope as in Aoki/NDXC; no full WOOB survey today (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, May 30 at 0528, once again what is often the best modulated and signaled RHC English frequency after 0500 is absent; still on 6100 > 6145 > 6000 in decreasing order of audibility. And today 5040 is in correct language, English instead of Spanish, but always with that squeal. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 12200, May 30 at 0535, JBA algo presumed RHC English 2 x 6100 harmonic. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 7390, May 30 at 0523, French with self-imposed beepery QRM --- this hour is RFI itself via Issoudun; meanwhile both ALGERIA relay frequencies, 7295 and 6125 are without the beepery which usually is to be heard upon 7295; so they must have swapped the defective transmitter around (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. 11730, May 30 at 0539, VP S1-S2 news in AmeriEnglish, VOA? 0540 switches to French mentioning ``nouvelles catholiques``? So Vatican, maybe via Madagascar. NO, it`s the French half hour of NHK via Issoudun -- of course, defaulting to English news at the outset (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS. 13575.047, May 30 at 1427, S3-S5 Chinesish talk. It`s RFA in Cantonese this hour only via TINIAN, typically askew. Altho Aoki says it`s *jammed, no sign of that. The ChiCom are not so eager to bother to block broadcasts in insignificant minolity ranguages (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2036 monitoring: awake by 1155 UT Saturday May 30, I hasten to check 9955 whether WOR still be at 1130 on WRMI. NO, replaced by some gospel huxtress, outro as Jack Van Impe show with address in Troy, Michigan. WRMI skedgrid shows this is supposed to be on SUNDAYS at this hour, so mistake, or now both? BTW, I had not noticed that JVI died January 18 this year:

https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2020/01/19/jack-van-impe-an-apocalyptic-televangelist-has-died/
But like so many other gospel huxters is embarking on a post-mortem career, tho in the few minutes I only heard her, his widow Rexella (how`s that for a gender-busting monicker?)? WOR may have been gone previously from this slot as I have not checked it every week. Next:

** U S A. 17775-, Sat May 30 at 1507, still no signal from KVOH, so its only airing of `Wavescan` is missed again. I wonder what the problem be now, same as before disabling it for a biweek until a biday revival, or something new?

Or is there absolutely no propagation this early? Recheck at 1825, now it`s on at S9-S6 but undermodulated. There is lots of sporadic E across the eastern half of USA, very little across the western (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7665-7725, peaking 7700, 9830-9870 peaking 9850, May 30 at 1425, and also circa 9490 at 1435, local noise blobs have shifted slightly upward by 20-30 kHz (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15825 & 13845, May 30 at 1530 onwards, WWCRs are getting sporadic E boost well above normal JBA level. 6m Es DX MAP shows heavy openings across eastern USA, but only a few spots barely exceeding 88 MHz, i.e. into the FMBC band; normally I need more than that to make it worth checking here. Below that, however, lots of CB channels have pileups and hets from all those off-frequency AM units, checked at 1830 May 30: 27025, 27085, 27135, 27165 (``eastern Iowa; south shore of Lake Erie``); NOT 27185! Also 27205, 27215, 27285, 27295, 27345; and in LSB not USB: 27385, 27395, 27575. 11m CB can really be hopping, yet hardly any activity on 10 or 15m hambands.

At 1835-1847 I perform a full bandscan of 30-51 MHz, and hear not a single voice, just tones/birdies here and there probably out of local computers. This on the R75, but no VHF antenna, just the HF/MF/LF longwire, which nevertheless previously succeeded in grasping some 6m phone USB ham DX from Mexico. I suspect the 30-50 MHz band be very underutilized these days for local 2-way (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

The Cross Radio (Federated States of Micronesia) will not be returning to SW

Was time for me to check-in again with Sylvia Kalau (The Cross Radio), at Pacific Mission Aviation, over in Pohnpei Federated States of Micronesia. Asked if she had any plans to reactivate The Cross Radio, via SW.

Here is her quick reply to me:
"Hello Ron - Greetings to you from one of the few Covid 19 free countries!! I’m sorry but we will not be broadcasting SW. The cost is too much for us. Thanks for your inquiry and understanding."

This is about what I expected to hear from her. No surprise here. Back in May, 2015, the station was hit by Typhoon Dolphin. Took them awhile to get FM back up again and running, but getting SW up and running never worked out for them. (Ron Howard via WOR io group)

NUEVOS PROGRAMAS DE HISTORIAS DE RADIO DE DANIEL CAMPORINI

30 DE MAYO 2020

PRIMERAS BOGOTANAS (PARTE 3)

Glenn Hauser logs May 29-30, 2020

** CUBA. 13567, 13634; 13767, 13833, 13900, 13967 approx., May 29 at 1420, it`s been a while since RHC has succeeded in spurting multiple spurblobs out of 13700-AM transmitter, but here they are again, none especially strong, at 67 kHz intervals. Best heard in AM mode instead of FM, the closer ones with F# tone and trace of `Sonido Cubano` music; the top one only a trace. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 255-MCW kHz, May 29 at 0622 UT and also at 1418 UT, ND beacon SW in Stillwater is back! It had vanished April 4 after reliable groundwave reception day and night, and in nightly chex, no sign of it since until now. Classaxe.com says it was last logged 2020-04-02, 50 watts, `Blaki`. I wonder if this have anything to do with the amount of traffic at that airport, or lack of it, in the interim (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN [non]. 5800 // 9395, UT Sat May 30 at 0130, Freedom Synergy Radio via WRMI, in English - ever heard them in alleged Spanish?

At 0200, FSR continues on 5800 only, this time an interview about how China plans to take over the world, with the help of the UN.

5010 // 7780 // 9395, May 30 at 0200 Radio Taiwán Internacional has resumed in Spanish, unlike the first time I checked, May 27, when FSR usurped/used up all four frequencies at this hour.

So which way is it supposed to be? WRMI websked has a hard time matching reality details, but it now shows FSR only at 0130 on 5800 & 9395; and no FSR at 0200, just Radio Taiwan, on 5010, 5800 [sic], 7780 & 9395 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 281-MCW kHz, May 29 at 0622, ND beacon DMO --- not Des MOines as I first guess, but SeDalia, MissOuri, 25 watts. Classaxe.com has something about it being shut down in Feb, decommissioned in April and last logged 2020-03-25. Not off any more (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565-CW, May 29 at 1419, HIFER beacon K6FRC is JBA from Patterson CA. WOR iog member Steve McGreevy says he has set up his own beacon in Keeler CA:

``Hey, I have a 22m -10 mW quasi-part 15 beacon going in the 22m ISM band where there are many. The ever weird 13560 has strange carrier multi-plexi. noises as well as weird dits and other stuff. The CODAR sweepers have left, yay! So many are running beacons plus/minus 13560, and I do so most days: 13562.89 (or so) "RR-dash" via a 1/4 wave wire up 1/6 wave in my shop building/radio-room sub-section - it is in the sleeping loft and the horiz. wire goes along apex of my shop bldg. - anyway, it is on a home-brew div. by 2 circuit via a 3rd. overtone xtal. osc. with a CB-14 xtal., so half CB-14 is its freq., more or less.  LWCA lists these things, linked to HFU and v.v.

CNR-1 is occupying 13570 now, splashing its long-path/short-path reverbing-LSB modulations upon the 22m experimental ISM band, bummer! First with the LPE at 16z, than by 1700 getting stronger with short-path signal. Def. CNR-1 // everything/jammers.``

So I am sure to look for RR and dash circa 13563, but no sign of it now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2036 monitoring: confirmed first US SWBC, Friday May 29 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, fair S7-S4 but NO jamming audible, nor at spotchex nor closing 2229. (9955 was getting jammed the following hour for Radio Libertad).

Also confirmed UT Sat May 30 at 0130 on WRMIs via Rochester KiwiSDRs: 7780 & 5850 good, 5010 poor. Next:

** U S A. 7489.930V, May 29 at 2346, WBCQ off-frequency-minus for a change, with FKB preacher at S7-S9+10; just prior to AAAWWW, 6159.890v is also on //, and a JBA 5130 may also be //. 2359 closing always with wrong WINB frequency for his next airing, ``9625``, runs over into canned WBCQ ID.

7489.94v, UT Sat May 30 from 0000, WBCQ with `AAAWWW`; as soon as WTO theme finishes, phone rings and Allan has ``got to take this call``, so fishes around for some music to play: how inconvenient. Back on at 0011, says it was engineering call. A&A talk for almost half an hour without phone call interruptions about tech problems: rare May lightning storm caused close-down -- that much have been Wed circa 2100 when there was no 7490 to run WOR. Call was from Chris at Continental. Super-Station is off again [yes, 9330 vacant], as the insulator ring around the PA tube has failed again. Discussing perils of high voltage - a 4160 V switch; transmitter runs 14 kV @ 50 amps. ``If you get a shock, it`s always your fault``.

Finally at 0038 says trimulcasting on 5130, 6160, 7490; and they discuss the bane of black flies in Maine summers; also had to replace   a bad tube for 7490 a few days ago; 0044 realizes he had not forwarded the phone lines, which is why not even Freddy has interrupted so far, and opens them on the 29th of May, YOOL 2020. Reads a bit of e-mail. 0054 caller asks what times WORLD OF RADIO is on? AW can`t remember but cosmikdebris gets a reply in just in time: Sunday 11 pm EDT on 5130; Wednesday 5 pm on 7490. Very quick prayer and off in time for Hal Turner at 0200. Here`s John Carver`s version:

``Tonight's show started on time on 7490 and 6160 but was two minutes later on 5130. Allan and Angela in the studio. Phone rang immediately and Allan said he had to take the call and put some music on. Allan back at 0011. Said it was an engineering call that he had to take. Then he said that Angela was beautiful and it'd been really hot in Maine this past week, eighties and nineties. He also mentioned that there had been a shutdown of everything at the station this past week because of lightning. Then he mentioned that the phone call was from the manufacturer of the big transmitter as the superstation was down again. Same problem as twice before, an insulating ring at the bottom of a tube. Then talk about how easy it is to get killed when working on the transmitters. Manufacturer said they couldn't send a repair crew because of the virus and Allan told them to just send him the material for the ring and he'd fix it himself. He did try that when the transmitter went down but didn't have the right material and it only worked for about five minutes before going down again. Then a lot of talk about this particular transmitter. Talk abut Angela's new gardening adventures around the superstation and then Angela's complaints about black flies. They also recently had a problem with a tube on the 7490 transmitter and had to replace it. Some talk about the unrest in the country and then some virus talk. Reading of emails at 0052 and a phone call at 0053. Back to some of the email at 0056. Very short closing prayer at 0059 and off the air at 0100. John, Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

TEXAS RADIO SHORTWAVE ANNOUNCES BROADCAST SCHEDULE FOR JUNE – DECEMBER 2020

GULF OF MEXICO, May 29, 2020 — Texas Radio Shortwave, an American free radio station, today announced its formal broadcast schedule for the rest of 2020.  These broadcasts are aimed at European listeners and usually will feature music by Texas artists.  The first three programs will highlight Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson, and Roy Orbison.

Channel 292 in Germany will transmit the hour-long programs at 0900 UTC on 6070 kHz with a power of 10 kW.  Broadcasts are scheduled on the third Saturday of each month.  Those dates are June 20, July 18, August 15, September 19, October 17, November 21, and December 19.

Channel 292 will broadcast a special program at 1900 UTC on December 25, 2020, on the same frequency.

Texas Radio Shortwave will schedule programs on other dates, times, and stations to reach listeners in North America and Europe.

Texas Radio Shortwave verifies 100 percent of all correct, detailed reception reports.  The station often issues special, limited-edition eQSLs for its programs.

Reception reports must include times, song titles, the text of announcements, a SINPO/SIO signal rating, information on receiver and antenna, and comments on the program content. Listeners using remote software-defined receivers (SDRs) should mention that.  Texas Radio Shortwave would like to receive audio clips of the broadcasts along with the detailed reports. Reports should be sent to texasradiosw@gmail.com.

Texas Radio Shortwave is located on a ship anchored in the Gulf of Mexico off the South Texas coast.  Its programs are broadcast in North America and Europe

Propagation News – 31 May 2020

This last week was dominated by a quiet Sun, but extensive sporadic E openings. We had a solar flux index hovering around 70 and zero sunspots, nevertheless we have had good F2-layer propagation on HF and multi-hop sporadic E bringing DX excitement.

Last weekend saw FT8 openings on 10 metres to the Caribbean and South America, even after sunset. Laurie, G3UML reports working KL7KK in Alaska and KH6YY in Hawaii on 20m SSB, which just goes to show that you shouldn’t write off HF just because of a low sunspot number! Laurie said: “There’s been quite a bit of Pacific activity on 20m in the mornings and lots of Gs working it. Jim, E51JD on the South Cook Islands was a readable five and five this morning.”

The Sun is showing some signs of life. An active region approaching the north-east limb just produced a minor solar flare that may be associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME). The minor event registered as a long duration B-class solar flare.

An image from the STEREO Ahead spacecraft reveals a wave spreading across the far side of the Sun, which can be indicative of a CME. But because of its position it should be directed completely away from Earth.

A small coronal hole was facing Earth on Thursday, which could mean a minor solar wind influence may be expected this weekend. A possible sunspot belonging to Cycle 25 may also begin to turn into view.

NOAA predicts the SFI will remain at or around 70 all week with a maximum Kp index of two. Sporadic E conditions should continue, providing short-skip openings on the higher HF bands.

VHF and up:

The long period of high pressure weather is going to hang on, with some good tropo opportunities, just through this weekend. Apart from a small hint of an isolated shower over this weekend, most places will stay dry until the middle part of next week.

On Tuesday a weakness in the high will allow isolated, but potentially heavy showers to develop, with a chance of rain scatter. This shower risk then stays with us through the rest of the week, but always on the edge of high pressure to the east and west of Britain.

In the second half of the week a cooler northerly flow will bring an increased shower risk, some heavy and thundery, but confined to the south by the following weekend.

The sporadic E prospects are usually at a peak around the early part of June, so expect to hear some of this fleeting, exotic propagation mode on the bands from 10m up to 2m. If the skip gets shorter, say strong DLs on 10m, then check 6m and so on, up to 2m for a really good opening.

Lots of factors influence its likelihood, but the best practice is to listen late morning and late afternoon or early evening. Check Propquest for daily blogs on possible sporadic E hotspots.

Moon declination goes negative on Monday, but we are at perigee on Wednesday, so EME path losses are at their lowest. 144MHz sky noise is low until Friday and Saturday but as peak Moon elevation is low, ground noise will dominate.

June continues to be an active time for meteor scatter operations, and the daytime Areitids shower peaks on the 7th. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

No significant solar activity over the past week, and still no sunspots observed since the end of April. According to Spaceweather.com, the percentage of spotless days in 2020 has inched up another notch to 79%. The percentage of days showing no sunspots for all of 2019 was 77%.

Average daily solar flux for last week was 69.6, up from 69 during the previous week. Average mid-latitude A index was 5.7, it was 4 during the previous week, and average planetary A index was 4.6, up from 3.7 during the previous seven days.

Predicted solar flux for the next 45 days is 69 on May 29, and 70 on May 30 through July 12.

Predicted planetary A index is 8 on May 29-31, 5 on June 1-14, 8 on June 15-16, and 5 on June 17 through July 12.

On May 27 Spaceweather.com pointed toward an active region, possibly a sunspot, just over our Sun’s eastern horizon. You can see it via the STEREO observatory at https://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/. Note that in solar images, east is toward the left, from Earth’s POV. They expect it to come over the horizon and begin to point toward us on Friday, May 29. On Thursday evening, I can see it just barely across the horizon.

Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period May 29 until June 23, 2020 from OK1HH.

Geomagnetic field will be
quiet on: May 31, June 2-5, 9-13
quiet to unsettled on: May 29-30, June 14, 19-20
quiet to active on: (June 1, 6-8, 15-18, 21)
unsettled to active: none predicted
active to disturbed: none predicted
Solar wind will intensify on June (6-7, 16-17)

Remarks:
- Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.
- The predictability of changes remains lower as there are no indications.

On May 26, Martin McCormick, WB5AGZ, in Stillwater, Oklahoma wrote: “For several years, I have stored the channels between 29.600 through 29.680 plus at least 52.525 MHZ on a couple of scanners and recorded the output. It is usually nothing at all or worse, spurs and birdies from local sources such as computers and their networks plus unidentified RF smog from our neighbors’ houses. Even at its worst, one could still tell that there just wasn't much going on on ten and six due to the absence of anything but noise.

“The latter part of March and several days in April brought ten meters to life. The first week in May was mostly dead but after that, I am not sure I have heard a single day without some significant openings to the Eastern United States and generally areas within a 1,000 mile radius of the central continental US. One geographical factor if you live in the central US is that the population density is generally less for great swaths of land to our West until you hit the urban parts of Arizona, Nevada and California such as the Los Angeles area.

“I heard two amateurs in Wyoming, for instance, who were within ground wave range of each other. One was N7DMO Riverton in Central Wyoming and W7WLK, nearby, whose signals probably would have both been full quieting on 29.6 but the discone antenna I am using is rated for 50-500 MHZ. Our computer network is to blame for a small amount of low-level noise on that frequency so there are noticeable heterodynes, but the stations were booming in and the operators were commenting that ten was open to Oklahoma.

“Most of what we hear here on ten and six during single-hop Sporadic E is pretty much Southern Canada and New York to Florida along with Southern Texas, Mexico, Central America and occasionally the West Coast from San Francisco down to Southern California. The Northern Midwest down to Iowa and Nebraska is a common DX catch on ten meters and six.

“It is nice this year to not have as much local interference such as the touch lamp some neighbors down the street got a few years ago that spewed birdies from around 25 MHZ well into low VHF until they moved out. And then there were the grow lamps, which knock about 10 dB off the bottom end of reception. They start up with a sort of blip-blip-blip-bzzzzzz, which is probably a gas discharge tube coming to life and shedding light on budding plants whose DNA sequences are still illegal in Oklahoma except for medical use. The sound is a broad-band hiss modulated by a buzz at ac line frequencies. Whatever it was, it seems to be absent this year and I am eternally grateful.”

Bob Kulacz, KB1DK, in Trumbull, Connecticut wrote on May 23: "How about this one? While I was waiting my turn to work OE8ANK on 40-meter SSB at 0345z on May 21, he was called by and worked YD2DOP. OE8ANK was surprised by the contact and asked for confirmation of his location. YD2DOP was heard loud and clear here in Connecticut, S8 to S9. Was I hearing YD2DOP over the North Pole, or was it long path over the dark south pole? It was just about high noon in Indonesia. I was never expecting to hear a signal from that location on 40 at that hour."

W0TTY is in CN87 (where I am, Seattle area) and is using a small mobile antenna (Comet UHV-6) indoors. He uses FT8 and has made many contacts on 6 and 10 meters. Check his page on QRZ.com for a picture of his tiny antenna!

“May 24th UTC looks like the big day with the big opening. On the 25th I had two Indonesian stations 5 minutes apart. I saw them for only maybe 30 minutes, and they were gone.

** JAPAN [non]. 9560, May 29 at 0332, English news about Japan, i.e. NHK Swahili service just starting via MADAGASCAR, S9+10/20 always good signal, 250 kW at 320 degrees, so an inadvertent North American service. NHK Warudo better watch out, they might pick up some NAm listeners they tried to get rid of as long as they are shoving English news into various other language services (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 7470, May 29 at 0322, here`s Station YHWH, S7-S9 on his monomaniacal anti-Christ pulpit, S7-S9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SUDAN. 7205, May 29 at 0325, ME singing unseems Qur`an, S5-S8 from Omdurman; which Manuel Méndez, Spain, reminds us could sometimes jump to 7206 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6023.0, May 28 at 0550, JBA carrier at unusual spot. Maybe it`s Radio Avogadro? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. The extremely distorted blobs previously found worst around 7330 and 7680 are gone at 0545 check May 28; but they are back at next check 1432 circa: 10545, 10185, 9830, 9470, 7680, 7505, 7330, 6970; 8038, 8405, 8765, 9115, 9295. Listening in FM or AM mode, they include a big hum, and surely no relation to talk modulation.

Walkabout the block circa 00 UT May 29 with PL-880 portable tuned to 7680 finds no particular peak other than near power lines or electric meters. I`ll have to sic OG&E on them. Next one peaks closer to 7320 than 7330, so 7335 can be heard on USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9648-9671 approx., May 29 at 0330, OTH radar pulsing right in the middle of the 31m SWBC band, INTRUDER. May really be the 25-kHz wide kind. At least, no broadcast carriers detected within it. In fact per Aoki not much scheduled at this hour: 9655 TWR via UAE; 9665v Brasil, 9675 China (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Shortwave Radiogram, 28-31 May 2020: Olivia modes – slowest, slower, slow

I am not sure if I saw any advantage in last weekend’s Thor22 over our usual MFSK32, and not much over the much faster MFSK64. On my PC, the Thor22 performed poorly via WINB, but well via WRMI. There is something peculiar about WINB’s audio. The RSID’s don’t work (for me, anyway) and now the Thor22 doesn’t, either. But, via WINB, the MFSK modes are OK, and, for the most part, so are the images. It’s fun to try to solve these mysteries.

Another anomaly last weekend was the absence of 5850 kHz during the Sunday 0800-0830 UTC broadcast (7780 kHz was on the air). During a storm, one of the poles (like telephone poles) at WRMI that hold the transmission lines between the transmitter and the antenna fell to the ground. The amazing crew at WRMI replaced that pole the next day.

Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 153) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and by 2010DFS in Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 7730 kHz, with more of this amazing reception and decode through co-channel interference). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend, we will experiment with three speeds of Olivia, all 2000 Hz wide. These modes often work well when reception conditions are poor, so let’s hope for bad reception this weekend. (And that pretty much guarantees good reception this weekend.)  I don’t know the official speeds of these Olivia modes, but I think they are about 24 wpm for Olivia 64-2000, 40 wpm for Olivia 32-2000 and 80 wpm for 16-2000. Slow. If reception is good, you can make it more challenging by using you old, cheap shortwave portable with the broken whip antenna.

After the Olivia, we’ll have time for seven images in the MFSK64 mode.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 154, 28-31 May 2020, in modes as noted:

  1:49  MFSK32: Program preview
3:16  Olivia 64-2000: Recyclable rubber polymer, part 1**
  6:52  Olivia 32-2000: Part 2**
11:05  Olivia 16-2000: Part 3**
15:43  MFSK64: This week’s images*
28:20  MFSK32: Closing announcements

* with images

** Turn off Fldigi squelch (SQL). Use bandwidth wide enough for
these 2000-Hz-wide modes, i.e. at least 2.5 kHz for SSB, 5 kHz
for AM.

“This is a Music Show” Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some text and images in various modes near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Glenn Hauser logs May 27-28, 2020

** BRAZIL. 4885, following up my last report about monitoring for Radio Clube do Pará, Belém: May 27 at 0455 I am hearing a poor signal via Pardinho KiwiSDR, during a talk/interview show and it matches a few seconds later the RCP webcast brought up via Streema --- but the IDs after 0458 are for Rádio Bandeirantes, 840 et al., São Paulo! A station which had abandoned SW some years ago, 6090, 9645, 11925 which are no longer mentioned. Now it`s available to other stations at least as an overnight network feed. 0459 IDs again only for it, not RCP, 2 am timecheck and news. The 4885 signal direct to here remains a JBA carrier, must be very low power. BTW, our condolences to those rational Brazilians who never supported ascension to power of the world`s second-most-stupid president (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA [and non]. 245-MCW kHz, May 27 at 0624 UT, dash and YZE, ND beacon which is 1000 watts from Gore Bay, Ontario, on the north shore of Manitoulin Island between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and which dxinfocentre.com says is slated for decommissioning 2020-09-10. Nice to be hearing this under summer conditions, with plenty of storms across TX, 1664 km = 1034 stmi away. Simulaudible underneath weaker and at a much different pitch is FS, which is 400 watts from Sioux Falls - Rock, South Dakota (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jammer survey, May 27 at 1358; 13020 VP, 12820 S5-S9, against Sound of Hope. Started too late to find others this hour.

At 1444-1448: 12190 S3-S7; 11460 JBA carrier; 11440 JBA; 11170 JBA carrier; 10960 S3-S5; 10820 S1-S3; 10720? JBA carrier. Aoki/NDXC shows all vs Sound of Hope except 10960 vs RFA via SOH; and 10720 not listed: instead, I compute that instead as a local mix, 9330 WBCQ plus 1390 KCRC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, May 27 at 1935, RHC English somewhat less distorted than usual as ``Ed Newman`` opens a mailbag, mentions special frequency for Africa, 11880! What does he know? This was replaced weeks ago by 7380. Something`s always wrong at RHC. There is very good reason they never announce full or current English frequencies: they are totally unreliable! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 9340, May 27 at 2200, RHC Spanish again on unlisted frequency I logged before on one date only, May 1 at 0020. Is // weaker 9535, and at 2236 check // 11760, but 9640 is something else in Spanish, i.e. CRI via Kashgar, EAST TURKISTAN, land of imprisoning and brainwashing Uighurs, Commies vs Commies when RHC is on proper frequency 9640 instead of 9340, evidently another keypad slipdigit punchup error. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Also Commies vs Commies on 9340 where the only listee is CNR1 jamming/Sound of Hope, but none of that audible now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN [non]. 5800, May 28 at 0100, RTI Spanish via WRMI is still here, opening the May 27 program; while last night we found all the 0200 RTI Spanish frequencies had been usurped by Freedom Synergy Radio in English. At 0130, 5800 again switches to FSR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, May 27 at 2156, apparently local blob of noise here vs NSS RTTY but no carrier detected from VOT now or at 2202. By 2224 under the QRM I do have a carrier and trace of TRT modulation. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2035 monitoring: not confirmed Wed May 27 at 2100 on 7490v, since WBCQ is off the air, as reported in next item.

Confirmed UT Thu May 28 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, good via Rochester SDR, VP into OK.

Next WOR 2036 should be ready by early UT Friday May 29, for first WRMI broadcast at 2200 on 9955.

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

** U S A. 7490, Wed May 27 at 2051, no signal from WBCQ and still missing after 2100 instead of WORLD OF RADIO`s only broadcast on this frequency. At 2201 I notice that the Super-station 9330 is also OFF! Must be some serious problems at Monticello. As of 0010 UT May 28, no May 27 twits from AW; his latest dated May 26 was promoting ``more great programming`` on 3265 at 9 pm [EDT = 0100 UT]. Guess what, there is NO info about what programming that may be at http://wbcq.com/schedule/index.php?fn=sked&freq=3265 And under summer bandnoise conditions, 3265 range is very limited. Coincidentally I am getting some huge spurblobs on the 7 and 9 MHz band, tempted to think they could be out-of-order WBCQs, but surely not, as not heard on SDRs in TX or VA; see UNIDENTIFIED. 7490v is back on air at 0045 UT May 28 check with rock music but 9330 is still off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 17775-, May 27 at 1452, KVOH back on after about two weeks` absence, S9/+10 with gospel music and Spanish alabanzas; as before, a few Hz on the minus side. I asked Ray Robinson to explain about the ``Shoffner-Harris`` transmitter designated on their website:

``Hi, Glenn. What you are hearing is the RCA running at 50 kW. The 'Shoffner Harris' is the transmitter we acquired from WTWW (who got it from KTWR in Guam). It was originally a Harris SW100 (not SW100A or B), with many components missing or damaged beyond repair. Over the past five years, it has been radically modified by our chief engineer, Jim Shoffner, and has thus become a rather unique machine. In recognition of Jim's efforts, our president, John Tayloe, dubbed it the 'Shoffner Harris'. It is still being worked on, but at this point, it is not yet on the air. Ray Robinson, Strategic Communications Group, http://www.voiceofhope.com Voice of Hope World Radio Network`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7330-7350, May 27 at 2051, horrible wideband blob of extremely distorted audio, the cadence of continuous rapid speech but totally unintelligible in AM or FM modes, let alone SSB. Separate from and stronger than Grimesland DRM centred on 7345. I tune around and find more of same thing, very approx. ranges: 7650-7720 peaking 7680 or 7690; weaker ones 6935-6970-6995, and circa 6610, 6260, 5900. At 2156 checking 9830 for Turkey, another such blob has landed here, and circa 9470.

Since WBCQ is AWOL from both 7490v and 9330.00, I wonder if those transmitters could be extremely out of order; but surely not, as at 2237 VA and TX SDRs are not hearing any of these. Must be something local, and I sure hope temporary. The ``modulation`` does not match any of our three AM talk stations on 960, 1390 or 1640, compared at 2242.

Not rechecked until 0115 May 28: blobs in the above 7 and 9 MHz ranges are still there! And I tune around WOOB to find some more altho not as strong, circa: 8400, 8760, 9115, 10200, 10550. I don`t see any pattern relating these frequency/ranges (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 13658-USB, May 27 at 1350, 2-way INTRUDERS, very weak, not Spanish, intonation somewhat like Brazilian but not that either (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
