Glenn Hauser logs June 30, 2019

** CUBA. 12200, June 30 at 0535, RHC `Music with a Message`, somewhat distorted at S6-S7, second harmonic of 6100, which is S9+30 with the same overmodulation distortion. While // 6165 is S9+10/20 and undermodulated but not distorted; // 6000 same S9+10/20 suppressed modulation yet is distorted (i.e. suptorted). // 5040 is S9+10/20 with less distortion. Show features old American protest songs, just another attempt to further its anti-American mantra. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11880, June 30 at 1344, CRI relay transmitter is already on with S9+20 of open carrier prior to 1400 broadcast in English. Think how many nutritious meals undernourished Cubans could be fed for the expense of broadcasting 250 kW of nothing for a quarter-hour. Not to mention all the dead air from spy numbers frequencies. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, June 30 at 0327, NO signal from XEPPM, as Manuel Méndez, Spain has also been noting for a few nights. Let`s hope Mexico`s last SWBC station is not gone forever too (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 11769.9, June 30 at 0602, talk presumed Hausa from Voice of Nigeria, S9/S9+10 and somewhat undermodulated. Nothing to be heard on 7254.9 or 9689.9. It seems that VON has replaced all its previous frequencies with this one; why? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOLOMON ISLANDS. 9545, June 30 at 0455, JBA signal, S3-S4 with traces of modulation, presumed SIBC as Ron Howard has reported reactivated on its daytime frequency scheduled until 0500* switch to 5020 (and which carrier becomes audible by 0600 as I have noted). So I listen carefully whether this 9545 will turn off – yes! Cut at 0459:23*. 24 hours earlier, Wolfgang Bueschel measured it on the Brisbane remote: ``9544.998 1/2 kHz at 0453 UT on June 29``. (Meanwhile the only other Pacific signal, NZ on 9700, has just come on at S9+10 for one hour.) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1988 monitoring: confirmed UT
Sunday June 30 at 0130 on WRMI 5850, VG S9+20/30.

Also confirmed UT Sun June 30 at 0328 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, only 2 minutes into, so started circa 0326. S9+20/30 but that includes considerable summer storm noise level, none nearby.

Still no reports of anyone hearing any of the three broadcasts via Hamburger LokalRadio, 6190, 9485 or 7265. Next:

** U S A. 7490+, June 30 at 0147 just as I tune in, this WBCQ cuts off the air amid some program, presumably `SW Saturday Night`. Maybe there was an overall power failure or storm, as this correlates with Richard Langley, NB at 0201:

``9330 kHz putting in a fairly good signal into NB just 100 km from the station with the Lumpy Gravy Radio Show (not live -- from a Thanksgiving) at 0145 UT this evening (30 June UT). At the time, 5130 kHz was airing the same program but offset a second or two. 5130 was not heard when rechecked at 0150. 3265 kHz was also on earlier with a different program but gone by 0150 UT, too.``

I don`t check again until 0329 when 9330..00 is on with `SW Saturday Night` as J.P. Is starting his ``train set``; nothing at all audible now on 7490+ or 5130+. I think there was another old AWWW playback after 0400.

9330+, by 0534 June 30, WBCQ-6 is off and low-power Brother Scare is resumed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5050, UT Sun June 30 at 0327, WWRB is still on with gospel huxtress, S9+20/30. I think I was already hearing it by 2300 Saturday, but not logged. Who knows what the real schedule is? Website http://www.wwrb.org/ remains totally outdated mentioning only winter frequencies 3215 & 3185 [sic], and no link to a program schedule; there may still be a now-imaginary old one lacking a link if I could find my bookmark. Dave Frantz has made it abundantly clear what a low priority WWRB is for him below his aeronautical business. I think 5050 is active only on Sat/Sun and Sun/UT Mon (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1210, UT Sun June 30 at 0558, at least two talk stations mixing with 3 Hz SAH, typical beat of KGYN OK vs WJNL MI daytimer, but can`t get an ID past 0607. Unknown what program is on UT Sun, as `Beyond Reality` is probably UT Tue-Sat, and Jim Bohannon was last UT Mon. I`m confident this is still WJNL cheating, as I remain waiting to see if anyone else ever report it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Encore - Classical music on SW

Encore - Classical Music this weekend is being broadcast as usual by Channel 292 (Europe) on 6070 kHz at 15:00 UTC Sunday 30th June.
And by WBCQ on 7490 kHz at 00:00 - 01:00 UTC Monday 1st July

There is a repeat on 6070 kHz on Friday 5th JULY at 19:00 UTC.

This week's show has plenty of xylophone, a horn trio, some Tennyson set to music, and a Vivaldi piece for mandolin. There is a string quartet, some Tchaikovsky, and a Strauss lieder.
All very wonderful.

Please note - Radio Tumbril is on the road being thoroughly analogue for a few weeks so there will be no emails but for a while but Encore will be broadcast every Sunday and Friday as usual - plenty of treats in store.

Thank you for spreading the word about Encore - Classical Music on Shortwave.
Please continue to send in reception reports and requests for pieces of music to play on Encore.

Brice Avery - Encore - Radio Tumbril.  www.tumbril.co.uk

Regular Broadcast times are:
15:00 - 16:00 UTC Sunday, and repeated 19:00 - 20:00 UTC Friday on 6070 kHz (Channel 292 Germany).
00:00 - 01:00 UTC Monday on 7490 kHz 9WBCQ - Maine).

Both Channel 292 and WBCQ live stream if reception is poor. And KiwiSDR's world-wide network of online receivers do a great job too.
All easily found with search engines.

Glenn Hauser logs June 28-29-30, 2019

** CUBA. 5990, June 29 at 2316, CRI English relay is S7-S9 but JBM; if // 15120, no signal there. Definitely off is 6000 RHC since this is Saturday, so no leapfrog on 6010 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENIG DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 11769.901, June 29 at 1734, JBA carrier, presumably Voice of Nigeria, as others have been reporting it on this `new` frequency ``11770`` both morning and evening. Axually 11770 is a very old frequency of theirs which had been disused for many years. The offset is in keeping with all its other frequencies shifted circa 0.1 kHz to the low side. Wolfgang Bueschel measured it June 28 on 11769.903 --- close enough. (I also have another stronger carrier about 11770.9, probably from a local device.) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 9760, June 29 at 2321, song at S3-S6, presumed RRI; yes, // 11800 & 11900 when a Spanish announcement soon follows. Can`t hear any of that underneath 11700 RHC, so RRI may have wisely vacated that (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 9830, June 29 at 2306, Türkisch musik, as once again the sloppyrators at Emiler have dozed? failing to turn 9830 off before 2300 when Englisch is finisched. A repeat of the German hour always follows on the program feed; I recheck just in time at 2319 to hear a few words of German before it is chopped off the air at 2319:45* (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1988 monitoring: confirmed first NAm SWBC, Friday June 28 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, fair, no upcut but joined at start about 2159:50 after ID which also ran a bit early.

Also confirmed UT Saturday June 29 at 0130 on WRMI 7780, poor-fair.

No reports yet from anyone about HLR 6190 Sat June 29 at 0630v; or 9485 Sat June 29 at 1430. For the latter, no trace of a signal heard by UTwente SDR, just huge splash from 9490 Romania.

Not confirmed Sat June 29 at 2030 on WRMI 15770 --- instead, Wavescan as now shown on skedgrid; so that did not last long, WOR only for the past two weeks. I go on to search the WRMI sked and find more changes:

UT Monday at 0130 now a blank space on 9395; but WOR added on 7780, while remaining on 7780 an hour later at 0230. To be confirmed.

Confirmed Sat June 29 at 2100 on WRMI 9955, again upcut during theme after my first utterance, poor S7-S9 vs summer noise level.

Not confirmed Sat June 29 at 2130 on WBCQ 9330 when an ad-hoc airing
occurred last week while testing; not on the air this early. Next:

** U S A. 9330.00, Fri June 28 at 2200, WBCQ-6 after a rockhour, another old `AWWW` playback starts with WTO. Reckeck UT Sat June 29 at 0000 for a new `Allan Weiner Worldwide`, yes, except it`s hosted by TimTron, from his own studio in Skowhegan.

Whenever he or Larry Will guests, it`s an entirely different show hardly worthy of the AWWW title. TimTron muses and plays a lot of music, does not take calls, rather like his own show. I think I heard only one belch. His booming voice goes nicely with the booming signal, but never distorted. There does seem to be a background noise vox effect buildup during brief pauses, AVC?

Says it might be his first and last time on the 500 kW. I`ll bet he`d love to hook his ham rig up to the Ampegon antenna. As I understand it, while ham transmitter power is strictly limited, antenna gain is not. I`ve previously heard WA1HLR on 80 meters with a broadcast-strength AM signal and wondered if that was really WBCQ equipment.

Here is John Carver`s report about that hour:

Tonight's show started on time on 7490 but it's TimTron hosting instead of Allan. Theme song plays at 0002. He marvels at the superstation and says he never ever thought about such a thing. He managed an analogy between the superstation and golf. Said a golfer will study the lay of the land and chose the best club to get the ball to the hole. Sometimes it's a ten kW club and they hope the ball makes it there. With the superstation they're using a 500 kW club and hit more than one hole at the same time.

He says there will be no email this evening as he's afraid that his computer is dying and he's had enough problems with the internet relay there that he's afraid that if he fires up another computer for email it might blow the internet connection. No phone calls as he doesn't want to give out his phone number. Then some music and back to talk.

Some anti-Trump talk and then waxes philosophic in an attempt to explain how Trump got elected in the first place. He jumps back to the Vietnam war and then jumps back and forth to explain what happened to the people in this country and how they do or don't react to things. Music and back to talk.

He blames part of the problem on the demise of broadcasting in this country along with the fairness doctrine which allowed such things as the FOX network and Rush Limbaugh. Said that with the dying out of AM and FM stations and the cloning of stations so they all were alike coast to coast we were in big trouble and should the internet go down because of global conflict along with the demise of shortwave broadcasters we'd really be in big trouble and wouldn't have the information to make an informed choice.

Some more music, talk, music, talk with a closing jab at Trump over immigration policies and then closed with more music. Both the program and 7490 were off at 0100. John, Mid-North Indiana``

I am rechecking 9330 after 0600 June 29 when another `AWWW` playback is running, AW along with Tom Barna in studio. At 0620 AW recommends reading something in RCA Broadcast News, May 1934, available at amemricanradiohistoroy.com about what? Maybe early high-power AM broadcasting.

9330.00 is not on by 2100 this Saturday June 29, or 2200? Retune at 2259, now on with open carrier, music and ID loop hitting S9+35-40-45; 2301, 500,000 watts ID and sirens, TimTron opening his new live June 29 show which he says is trimulcasting also on 5130+ (JBA carrier here) and ``propagation test frequency 3265`` (zero here; and 7490 remains off). Until 2323 he`s mostly playing music, then another 500,000 watts ID.

People getting used to such super-entertainment are going to be very disappointed when, July 8, the flat-earth World`s Last Chance ministry takes over 9330 --- we can only hope that a bit of time can be carved out/retained for some of WBCQ`s own programs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, Sat June 29 at 2343, WTWW-2 starts `Theatre Organ in the Ozarx` late again after some hamshow runover, so I switch to stereo webcast which lasts until 2417, never just 30 minutes or 29. This time I hear Bob Heil intro giving his location in the Ozarx as Pleasant Hope --- not Pleasant Hill. I`m surprised no one ever corrected me about that, as I contradicted him more than once pointing out that Pleasant Hill, which is what I thought he was saying, is near Kansas City, beyond the Ozarx. Pleasant Hope really is in the Ozarx a few miles north of Springfield, and ARRL/FCC lookup confirms that is where K9EID is to be found. If I make a mistake I want it corrected sooner or later, even if I have to do it myself (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1210, UT Sat June 29 at 0606 UT, scary theme music recognized of `Beyond Reality Radio`, which means for the sixth night, daytimer WJNL Kingsley MI is again operating; with ~3 Hz SAH from KGYN, which this time even when nulled is too strong to allow much signal from WJNL. Has anyone else logged WJNL cheating by now?? NTMK (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

World Music Radio 5840 and 15805

For several weeks there has been a problem with the aerial for World Music Radio (WMR) 5840 kHz meaning that the power on 5840 had to be reduced to some 25-40 W, and more recently - after a lightning strike - WMR has been off air on 5840 during weekdays  due to problems with the audio feed. Thursday June 27 everything was fixed  and WMR is back on the air on 5840 kHz with full power (100 W) and again 24 hrs a day seven days a week

The transmissions on 15805 have also suffered from some problems, but is now also back on the air as from today Saturday June 29. Power is 200 W into a half wave dipole. Transmissions on 15805 kHz are weekends only, and 15805 kHz will be on the air today Saturday until tomorrow Sunday at 1600 UTC.

Right now at 1030 UTC 15805 is audible in many of Europe (except close to the transmitter site) including Ireland, western UK, Northern Scandinavia, Switzerland/Austria, Italy, Iceland and on the East coast of North America (New Hampshire).  Please note that modulation on 15805 kHz is not perfect; not good in LSB or USB, but fair in wide AM.

WMR is also audible from www.wmr.radio

Propagation News – 30 June 2019

Last week saw a continued quiet Sun with zero sunspots at the end of the week and a settled geomagnetic field. A feature in Nature magazine has suggested that we may be heading for a Maunder Minimum in the next three decades. The report cites a study of long-term oscillations of the solar background magnetic field associated with double dynamo waves generated in the inner and outer layers of the Sun, which indicate that the solar activity is heading for a grand minimum.

Another report says an international panel of experts coordinated by the NOAA and NASA have released its preliminary solar cycle 25 forecast, predicting that cycle 25 will peak no earlier than 2023 and no later than 2026, with a minimum peak sunspot number of 95 and a maximum of 130. This would make it similar to cycle 24, which was predicted to reach a maximum smoothed sunspot number of 90 in May 2013. In fact, solar cycle 24’s maximum was reached in April 2014 and peaked at an average sunspot number of 82. Meanwhile, we continue to head towards sunspot minimum, which is predicted no earlier than July 2019, and no later than September 2020.

The HF doldrums continue, although evenings and night times seem to be best for DX, with 20m remaining open until very late indeed. OD5TX in Lebanon was romping in at around 1930UTC on Wednesday. 40m is also very active with Roger, G3LDI reporting many stations from the USA on the band around 0330UTC.

Next week, NOAA predicts the solar flux index will be in the range 67-69 with settled geomagnetic conditions and a maximum Kp index of two or three.

VHF and up:
This coming week, tropo should be fairly productive at times, especially across nearby sea paths over the North Sea and English Channel. High pressure remains a primary feature of the weekend and part of next week, although the centre of the high being close-by will mean that the inversion is quite close to the ground, so paths may suffer if this gets too low. That said, it looks like a good week to get those beams and some CW/SSB going on VHF bands.

Moving on to sporadic E now, which relies indirectly upon the presence of jet stream flow. This can make gravity waves that propagate up to the E region and play a role in the formation of sporadic E propagation.

The location of jet stream winds recently has been driven by an upper low west of Biscay, which has favoured paths to Spain and Portugal, but this is about to change as the pattern shifts to a jet stream across Scandinavia into eastern Europe. This will favour paths to Scandinavia, the Baltic and Ukraine. There is an outside chance of an upper ridge over western Europe, which could introduce a chance of sporadic E into Italy or Spain, but this is not a clear signal this far ahead.

The Moon reaches peak declination on Tuesday and perigee on Friday, so EME conditions will be at their best all week with low path losses and long Moon windows. There are no major meteor showers this week so continue to look for best DX opportunities via random meteors around dawn.

** CHINA. 11440, June 28 at 1222, CNR1 jammer, as I start today`s hunt, ignoring the ``in-band`` ones above 11500, except to note they match 11785 and 11825.

11460, June 28 at 1222, much weaker carrier than 11440 CNR1 jammer.

11150, June 28 at 1223, CNR1 jammer. In EiBi, not Aoki.

11100, June 28 at 1227, CNR1 jammer. Unlike all the others, this one has a LAH = low audible heterodyne varying slightly on hi side, maybe Sound of Hope target itself. EiBi in fact shows SOH on 11100.1

12190, June 28 at 1229, CNR1 jammer.

13160, June 28 at 1231, CNR1 jammer strongest, S7-S9

13550, June 28 at 1231, JBA carrier, CNR1 jammer? Not in EiBi or Aoki

13870, June 28 at 1232, CNR1 jammer.

14700, June 28 at 1233, JBA carrier, unlisted CNR1 jammer?

14850, June 28 at 1234, Chinese, CNR1 jammer

14980, June 28 at 1235, CNR1 jammer, second strongest WOOB, S6-S8.

15920, June 28 at 1235, Chinese, CNR1 jammer.

No other way-out-of-band ones found in the 10-16 MHz range. U.o.s., all listed as CNR1 jammer/SOH frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 12000, June 28 at 1218, RHC is S7-S8 here, bonus harmonic of 6000, which is S9 to S9+10; while 6100 with CCI from CRI in Russian if not also KCBS Pyongyang; 6100 has no bonus harmonic to be heard on 12200! Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, June 28 at 0602, VON is gone again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12350-USB, June 28 at 1228, WCY conveying marine weather outlooks for Caribyachts, but also with a carrier partially demodulating him --- i.e., local mixing product of 13740 RHC minus 1390 KCRC = 12350; and which goes away with preamps off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7505, June 28 at 0602, WRNO is gone again, after having been in well at 0236. Curtailed ``schedule``? Or just totally unreliable (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

The K7RA Solar Update

A new sunspot group emerged on June 24, but don’t count on it persisting much longer. It emerged already far along the western limb and is about to rotate off the visible solar disc. Sunspot numbers on June 24-27 were 24, 12, 11 and 11.

Average daily sunspot number increased from 0 to 6.7 over the week of June 20-26, while average daily solar flux increased from 67.1 to 67.4.

Average daily planetary A index decreased from 5.3 to 5, and average daily middle latitude A index decreased from 7 to 5.7.

Predicted solar flux is 67 on June 28 through July 5, 68 on July 6, 69 on July 7-9, 68 on July 10-11, 67 on July 12-27, 68 on July 28, 69 on July 29-31, 68 on August 1-2, 69 on August 3-5, 68 on August 6-7, and 67 on August 8-11.

Predicted planetary A index is 5 on June 28-30, 8 on July 1, 5 on July 2-5, 8 on July 6, 5 on July 7-9, 8 on July 10-11, 5 on July 12-20, then 8, 12 and 10 on July 21-23, 5 on July 24 through August 1, 8 on August 2, 5 on August 3-5, 8 on August 6-7, and 5 on August 8-11.

You can see daily updates of these predictions, usually sometime after 2100 UTC at ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/forecasts/45DF/ .

Geomagnetic activity forecast for June 28 until July 24, 2019 from F.K. Janda, OK1HH, who has been compiling this weekly geomagnetic forecast since January 1978.

Geomagnetic field will be:
Quiet on June 28, 30, July 9, 14-16, 21
Quiet to unsettled on June 29, July 3, 8, 10-11, 13, 17, 20
Quiet to active on June July 1 (- 2), 4-6, 12, 18, 24
Unsettled to active on July 7, 19, 22-23
No disturbed conditions predicted.

Solar wind will intensify on June (28,) July 5-7, (8-9,) 10-11, (17-19, 22-24). Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.

On Tuesday, June 25, Steve Sacco, NN4X, reported from Florida: “Amazing over-the-pole conditions on 17 meters this morning. Decoded dozens of Japanese stations on FT8 between 1200Z and 1245Z and worked a few. UA0BA was logged at 1512Z, and I worked HS0ZIV at 1519Z. I was called by BH4QYX immediately afterwards but did not complete that contact.”

** NORTH AMERICA. 7470, June 27 at 0323, Station YHWH, anti-Christ pirate at S9, checked after tip a few minutes ago from Walt Salmaniw, BC, that this was strongest ever for him in BC. ** U S A. 7780, June 28 at 0235, something Slavic in English, must be UKRAINE via WRMI, #1 transmitter back on tonight after missing last night during World of Radio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9265V, UT Friday June 28 at 0232, Ray Robinson talking about David Sarnoff, so this must be `AWR Wavescan` as now scheduled on WINB; also Mondays at 2100 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7505.007, June 28 at 0236, WRNO is back! With hymn in English, S9+10. Had been missing for a few weeks whenever checked in 01-13 UT span (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1210, June 27 at 0600 UT newscast under sportstalk, 0603 also a song QRM; 0604 mention Westwood I; 0605 ad for something in Traverse City, 0606 BRR theme? 0607 opening `Beyond Reality Radio`; so the latter items nail this as WJNL, Kingsley MI, 50 kW daytimer now caught four days in a row on air in the nightmiddle, when I tend to check around bedtime. SAH of 184/minute, correlating with the usual beat against probably KGYN OK.

Besides the silent-night ``schedule`` of 0030-0900 UT, WJNL also has a critical-hours proviso of 2.5 kW, which means reduced to that power 2 hours after sunrise and before sunset, i.e. 2230-2430 & 0900-1100 UT --- Not inbooming, so could be on that power now instead of 50 kW.

Finally on the fifth night I try for WJNL earlier: 0248 UT June 28 I detect the tones of Jim Bohannon, whom I had heard on the first night, UT Monday after 0607 in a weekend playback. NRC AM Log shows WJNL an affiliate of JBo among many others; yet the Jim Bohannon show itself does not know this, despite a station list all on one page easily searched; in fact no station known on 1210: http://www.jimbohannonshow.com/station-finder/ Also now has the usual SAH of ~3 Hz, and KGYN ID at 0259 UT. And another day passes with no other known DX logs of WJNL cheating (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15807, June 27 at 1348, strong multiple carriers about 0.65 kHz apart centered near here; S9 about same level as Es-enhanced 15825 WWCR, so I wonder if WTWW-3 be experimenting with some digital mode, nominal 15810 but not heard often or lately. Only in FM mode do we hear one clear tone at high E-flat, compared to my keyboard, or approx. 1244 Hz per:  http://pages.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html but it cuts off at 1415* --- not sure whether a local device.

Tuning around again at 1709, I hear some similar sounds not on 15807, but first around 15861, and then at 60-62 kHz intervals but variable strengths and some of them missing: 15617, 15556, 15496, 15435, 15373, 15250, 15129, 15007. Except for Saudio on 15435 only. I suspect this set are from a local device, as on the PL-880, they weaken as I walk away from the house  (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Shortwave Radiogram, 27-30 June 2019

Thanks to those of you who offered suggestions and assistance as I prepare a new guide to decoding the modes, especially making the audio connection between the radio and the computer or Android device.  If I have not responded directly yet, I will soon. The project is slowly making progress.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 105) are provided by Scott on Ontario (Friday 1303 UTC after late transmitter start), Magdiel in Mexico (Saturday 0230 UTC, excerpt) , and Ralf in Germany (Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine MFSK64 images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 106, 27-30 June 2019, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:41  MFSK32: Program preview
2:53  Americans want NASA to focus on asteroids, not moon
5:53  MFSK64: Train tunnels as a source of heating and cooling*
10:05  Upgraded Ocean Cleanup barrier returns to the Pacific*
14:38  This week's images*
28:41  MFSK32: Closing announcements

The Mighty KBC transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 pm EDT) on 9925 kHz, via Germany. A minute of MFSK is at about 0130 UTC.  Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, 9395 kHz, Thursday 0130-0230 UTC (Wednesday evening in the Americas). Also look for a waterfall ID at the beginning of the show. thisisamusicshow@gmail.com . www.instagram.com/thisisamusicshow/ www.twitter.com/ThisIsAMusicSho/

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32 (PA NBEMS is experimenting with Thor 50x1 for messages). Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in.

Thanks for your reception reports!

World Music Radio back on shortwave 24/7

For several weeks there was a problem with the aerial for 5840 kHz meaning that the power on 5840 had to be reduced to some 25-40 W and more recently - after a lightning strike - WMR has been off air on 5840 during weekdays due to problems with the audio feed. Today everything has been fixed - thanks to my good friend Claus Nielsen - and WMR is back on the air on 5840 kHz with full power (100 W) and again 24 hrs a day seven days a week.

Glenn Hauser logs June 26-27, 2019

** BRAZIL. 9663.99, June 27 at 0035, Brazuguese talk from R. Voz Mission?ria, which has sunk to a new low. Nominal 9665, for months has been about halfway down to 9664, or circa 9664.4, but now below 9664.0 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 11100, June 26 at 1349, Chinese JBA, CNR1 jammer.

11120, June 26 at at 1349, CNR1 jammer, S2-S3 quite stronger than
11100.

11460, June 26 at 1349, CNR1 jammer much stronger still at S7-S9.

12190, June 26 at 1350, JBA carrier, another SOH frequency jammed by the ChiCom (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000, June 27 at 0020, CRI Spanish relay is here on wrong frequency instead of vacant 5990! Talking about China, obviously not RHC, later music and 0032 Chinese lesson for Spanish. // 15120 is JBA. Second harmonic on 12000 is a bit better with // music JBA at 0047. But that`s not all ---

6000, June 27 at 0020, a much softer-sounding signal under CRI but not that much weaker since it`s making a heavy SAH of 288/minute = 4.8 Hz. Hard to make out its audio which should be RHC English; that // 6165 is off so no way to compare. It really sounds more like Spanish but not // 11760; of course an English broadcast would include some Spanish words and/or accents. Something`s always wrong at RHC: they are running two transmitters and two different programs on the same frequency! But not so on 12000, only CRI heard. Kudos for coming up for something new to be wrong about. 6000 self-imposed collision still going at 0050 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 4765, June 27 at 0046, R. Progreso is still/again missing. Is the transmitter permanently broken? Somethng`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 7255- & 9690-, June 26 at 0620, VON on neither its primary nor alternate frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 23, June 26 at 1453 UT, KSBI OKC at the margins of breakup as usual with no tropo enhancement, so I photo an example: http://www.w4uvh.net/HauserDTVPixArt9.jpg Between breakups I detected PSIP IDs for most of the extra channels: 52-2 Bounce, 52-3 Laff, 52-4 ???, 52-5 Escape (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1987 monitoring: NOT confirmed Wednesday June 26 at 2100 on WRMI, since yet again, 9955 is not on the air. Other WRMI 9395 is good with RAE; 9455 not on either. At 2102:40 a couple split-second pips as if 9955 trying to turn on. I`ve listened to enough noise by 2106, but leave a receiver on 9954-USB from which by 2124 I notice the carrier has come on and with WOR VP.

7490+, Wed June 26 at 2100 simulcast on WBCQ is apparently on with WOR but JBA in summer noise; too bad it`s not // on super 9330 this time.

NOT confirmed, UT Thursday June 27 at 0114 the 0100 WOR, since WRMI is still absent from 7780 as it was at earlier 0015 check. Next: 0930 UT Friday    Unique Radio 5045-USB NSW

Also check 9330 WBCQ for unscheduled airings during testing phase.

Next WORLD OF RADIO 1988 should start airing Friday at 2200 on WRMI
9955.

[it appears we will now be running on a Friday-to-Thursday cycle, so freshest new airings are on weekends]

** U S A. 7780, June 27 at 0015 & 0114 chex, this WRMI is off, while 7730 & 7570 are nominal.

BTW, I often still find a JBA carrier on 5800 such as at 0030 June 27, presumably a low-power test from WRMI which has registered this frequency available 24 hours at 100 kW to a 181-degree antenna; but Jeff doesn`t want to tell us any more about it. On other occasions there has been definite WRMI audio on it, such as // 5950 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330.00, June 26 at 2058, WBCQ-6 is on with music at S9+10 past 2100, not // 7490+ where WOR is outgoing but hardly incoming.

9330.00, June 27 at 0026, an old `AWWW` I recall with Tom Barna hosting phone calls with hum, including someone who, then, said 9330 was ``inaudible in the Catskills``. Here and now, 9330 is S9+40/50+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LLSTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1190, June 26 at 0607, RCC talk dominating at S9+20, then fades. Got to be KDMR Kansas City MO, U2 5000/500 watts, EWTN affiliate, but NOT // 11610 WEWN. The only other Catholic/EWTN on 1190 is in WV (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1210, June 26 at 0606 UT, `Beyond Reality Radio` starting for another night, i.e. 50 kW daytimer WJNL Kingsley (Traverse City) MI, and with usual SAH of about 3 Hz vs KGYN or WPHT. The third night in a row I have caught this cheater at my bedtime --- of course, if it`s doing it at 0606 UT, it`s also doing it all night.

Official FCC SS/SR times for WJNL in June are: 0030-0900 UT. In July extended to -0915. Still have not seen anyone else reporting this, after my two previous logs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs June 25, 2019

** CHINA. 11440, June 25 at 1414, JBA Chinese, a regular spot for CNR1 jammer against Sound of Hope.

11460, June 25 at 1414, JBA carrier, surely another CNR1 jammer. Even as a JBA carrier the primary assumption has to be a jammer, not SOH.

11100, June 25 at 1414, JBA Chinese, CNR1 jammer.

10960, June 25 at 1415, Chinese at S3-S5, much stronger than the 11+
MHz ones. Then I scan WOOB further up:

12190, June 25 at 1419, Chinese at S6-S8, CNR1 jammer.

12880, June 25 at 1419, Chinese at S5-S7, CNR1 jammer.

13070, June 25 at 1420, Chinese at S6-S8, CNR1 jammer.

15110, June 25 at 1420, Chinese at S9/S9+10, CNR1 jammer // the rest, this inband one vs VOA; maybe a bit of victim audio too unlike the others with not a hint here of SOH (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MALI. 5995, June 25 at 0630, S9-S7 of dead air, as ORTM is back to its old trix. Nor any 6000 RHC to bother it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS. 13690.050, June 25 at 1352, JBA off-frequency carrier stix out in a BFO 1-kHz step bandscan. Aoki/NDXC shows it`s VOA Chinese via SAIPAN, this hour only. And it`s gone at 1413 recheck (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 90.1, June 25 circa 1330 UT, can`t get classical KUCO on one of my portables, nor the other classical KHCC in Kansas; rather some gospel huxter.

Tropo must be up from somewhere else. Can it be Tulsa like I soon find on TV? There is a 50 watt KJZT-LP there per WTFDA FM Database, jazz and enough I guess to block KUCO inside Tulsa. No 90.1s in eastern Kansas. The nearest adjacent gospelhuxters are: KBNV Fayetteville AR, 7.1H/16.0 V, 142m AFR; and less likely further KSCV Springfield MO, 11/11 kW, 150m, Bott network.

Tropo is up from the Tulsa area on numerous DTV channels, without aiming exactly that way rather than further clockwise, June 25 from 1429 UT tune-in:

RF 13, KETA OKC is not decoding, must be because of DX CCI? But no other 13 Okies; maybe KFJX Pittsburg KS; or two in AR, Arkadelphia and Mountain View.

RF 11, KOED Tulsa, is in just fine if we wanted to watch OETA now!

BAD signal bars on: 9, 10, 14, 21, 28, 30, 31, 34, 35, 45, 46

RF 8, `Live` no longer with Kathie Lee & Regis, probably KJRH ``2``

RF 20, KQCW-HD, 19-1

RF 22, KOKI-TV, 23-1

RF 26, KTENNBC, 10-1 Ada again

RF 34, KMYT-TV, 41-1; at 1447 UT: 41-3 Grit with `Laramie`; 41-2
GetTV; 41-1 KMYT-TV

By 1441, RF 45 is decoding as 6-1 KOTV; 6-2 CW = same as KQCW on RF 20: with KQCW-19 Muskogee bug in LR; and KOTV 6.2 Tulsa bug in UL. http://www.w4uvh.net/KQCWonKOTV.jpg

6.3, is NewsOn6NOW, i.e. THEN, looping replays of continuous local news, reduced SD screen so that continuous commercials run on right side --- same thing that sibling KWTV-25 ``9`` does in OKC on 9.2.
Photoed some of this, later in DTV pixel art breakup.
http://www.w4uvh.net/KOTVNewson6Now1.jpg
http://www.w4uvh.net/KOTVNewson6Now2.jpg
http://www.w4uvh.net/KOTVNewson6Now3.jpg
http://www.w4uvh.net/KOTVNewson6Now4.jpg

KOTV will eventually repack to RF 26, when? which may explain why KTEN Ada will be bumped off from there; per rabbitears.info, KOTV will also continue with relays on RF 30 and 19.

RF 45 KOTV seems to hold up longest and I stick with it, as old frame freezes and pops up again and again, until as late as 1725 UT! Predicted tropo map as of 1500: http://www.w4uvh.net/KOTVtropo.jpg (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1987 monitoring: confirmed UT Tuesday June 25 at 0123 the 0100 on WRMI 7780, fair S7/S9+10 vs summer noise level. Next:

2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v [and/or 2130]
0100 UT Thursday  WRMI 7780
0930 UT Friday    Unique Radio 5045-USB NSW

Also check 9330 WBCQ for unscheduled airings during testing phase.

[it appears we will now be running on a Friday-to-Thursday cycle, so freshest new airings are on weekends]

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330.00, June 25 at 2255, WBCQ-6 is on again, with an old AWWW I remember hearing before; at 2300 changes to TimTron. Inbooming of course (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9455, June 25 at 2011, WRMI with classic rock segués, some so short it seems like medleys, no announcements until 2017, ``for something different, go to apsradio.com`` --- so this M-F APS Radio transmission is not canceled, contrary to what Ivo reported June 18. S8 and much louder than 9475 WTWW which is only S7-S9. Meanwhile the other WRMI on 9395 is still SMTV at S9 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9475, June 25 at 2011, WTWW-1 is on but remarkably weak, only S7-S9 and quite undermodulated. It used to be the SSOB by far blasting in all day. It must be grossly underpowered now, as propagation is certainly not to blame: Neighbor 9980 WWCR is on now during its very limited schedule, blasting S9+20/30, and so is even 10 kW WWV on 10000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17775, June 25 at 1335, KVOH is already on way earlier than nominal *1400 and to boot, propagating! Praise music in Spanish, of course, S9-S6. SSOB by far with the only other SOBs being the JBA Sa`udi carriers on 17895, 17705, 17615+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1210, June 25 at 0604 UT, is 50 kW daytimer WJNL in MI again on air in the nightmiddle? Yes! At first mixture with sportstalk, maybe partial format of KGYN OK per DF, ads for DirecTV and NewsMax TV [ugh! Has also been added to local cable lineup]. SAH of about 192/minute very close to same as last night just above 3 Hz.

Or is it WPHT? I see in NRC AM Log that both WPHT and KGYN call themselves ``The Big Talker`` --- how original! But unsame lineups, and no slogan heard which would not solve the question anyway.

0607 UT joins `Beyond Reality Radio`, in northerly null of KGYN(?) which then fades down; 0634 UT recheck after newsbreak, promos for 1110 & 101 FM or more specifically 101.1 and 106.3. This all matches with the group as explained in my yesterday`s report, e.g. 1110 is sibling station WJML. But are they B.R.R. program affiliates? Yes per http://beyondrealityradio.com/ if you let it scroll until it get to Michigan. Jimbo as heard last night at this time was of course a playback Sunday night filler; no new shows on weekends. Can`t find any program skeds for WJNL et al. Are the call letters supposed to imply ``JourNaLism``? Website is instead devoted to ``Deals``.

I`ve yet to see anyone else logging WJNL on the MW lists, where I posted this ASAP even before including it in my multiband loggings; was my tip not helpful? Or not noticed without a big headline of its own? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs June 23-24, 2019

** CHINA. 11460, June 24 at 1416, CNR-1 jammer at S5-S7, on an SOH frequency. Only WOOB one found in a 10-16 MHz scan, altho there is a suspicious JBA carrier on 14700, unlisted in EiBi or Aoki/NDXC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY. 17690, June 24 at 1409, JBA carrier with flutter (or with jammer CCI). Aoki/NDXC shows only VOA Tibetan via Lampertheim during this hour only. Don`t usually hear a carrier here; only other signals on band are 17615+ Saudi JBA carrier, and more than that already from 17775 KVOH (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, June 24 at 0602, JBA carrier, presumed SIBC. Seems awfully early, but Honiara sunset will be 0710, now at its earliest; at 10 degrees south it varies only 30 minutes over the course of a year. Wonder if they are modulating too? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1987 monitoring: confirmed Sunday June 23 at 2130 on WRMI 7780, just barely audible.

Also confirmed UT Monday June 24 at 0130 on WRMI 9395, fair.

Also confirmed UT Monday June 24 at 0230 on WRMI 7780, poor.

Also confirmed UT Monday June 24 from 0300.5 on WBCQ-6 500 kW 9330.00, VG of course, S9+20/30 as has just brought up simulcast with Area 51; at 0328 I confirm WOR also on 5130.367, much weaker S9 vs high storm noise level.

Also confirmed UT Monday June 24 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20. Next:

1816 UT Monday    IRRS 7290 Romania
0100 UT Tuesday   WRMI 7780
0800 UT Tuesday   Unique Radio 5045-USB NSW [2 editions]
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v [and/or 2130]
0100 UT Thursday  WRMI 7780
0930 UT Friday    Unique Radio 5045-USB NSW

Also check 9330 WBCQ for unscheduled airings during testing phase.

[it appears we will now be running on a Friday-to-Thursday cycle, so freshest new airings are on weekends]

** U S A. 9330.00 (I don`t write 9330.000 since I am not axually bothering to measure it to that detail, but probably), Sunday June 23 at 2130, WBCQ-6 superpower test is on, but this week modern rock, and not simulcasting `Marion`s Attic` from 7490 like happened partially last week. At 2205 I find it is now = much weaker 7490v with `Uncle Bill`s Melting Pot` including some Turkish music. Unknown what was at 2230, but before 2400 Harry Shearer`s `Le Show` is wrapping up on 9330, so that is still // 7490 unlike the 2300 hour last Sunday. At 0000 UT Monday June 24, 9330 goes into an `Allan Weiner Worldwide` replay, instead of `Encore` classical music now on 7490, and which I hear on webcast. Unknown what at 0100, but before 0300, another AWWW hour is ending from at 0200 start, somewhat curtailed in order to cut to // Area 51, 5130+ for WORLD OF RADIO, thanks! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, June 24 at 0601, S9+30 of dead air from WTWW-2, also the constant companions much weaker plus/minus ~12.9 kHz spur carriers just above 5072 and just below 5098. Maybe recently finished Sunday night broadcast and not turned off yet (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1210, UT Monday June 24 at 0606 UT, surprised to hear a program promo from WJNL, and into Jim Bohannon --- dominant on frequency vs KGYN or whatever, with SAH of 186/minute = just over 3 Hz. Still there at 0629 UT joint ID with three FM frequencies starting with 94.5, and ads mentioning Mackinaw and Traverse City.

No wonder I`m getting it since NRC AM Log shows WJNL is a 50 kW non-direxional daytimer! Plus 2500 watts critical hours, which this is not. CoL Kingsley MI, which is just south of Traverse City.

It`s in a group ``The Information Station`` which also includes: WHAK-960, WWMN-106.3, WJML-1110, W266CS-101.1, but that does not account for the one FM frequency I copied, 94.5.

The WTFDA FM Database is inaccessible (but not its whats new page). Per FCC AM & FM Query searches, 94.5 would be 50 kW WYPV in Mackinaw City, same licensee Mitten News as WJNL.

Anyhow, we have here a 50 kW ND daytimer on the air in the middle of the night, so should get out widely if they do it again! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1550, June 24 at 1325 UT, more than two hours after LSR here of 1115 UT, dead air from NE/SW and a SAH of 264/minute = 4.4 Hz. At 1330 UT now modulating ESPN. The only fit around here per NRC AM log is KESJ St Joseph MO, 2.5 kW ND at day; discounting KYAL Sapulpa OK, also 2.5 kW but eastward from here (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1700, June 24 at 1331 UT open carrier/dead air. Can`t get a sharp DF on it; got to be either KKLF TX or twice-as-far KBGG IA (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
