The K7RA Solar Update

We just saw 15 straight days with visible sunspots, but it ended on Wednesday, August 29 with a sunspot number of zero. There were also no sunspots seen on Thursday, the following day.
According to Spaceweather.com, in 2018 so far, we’ve seen 134 days (55 percent) with no sunspots. For all last year, in 2017 there were 104 days (28 percent overall) with no sunspots. During the last solar minimum, there were 528 days with no sunspots in 2008-2009, or about 72.2 percent of the days over the entire two years with no activity.
The past reporting week (August 23-29) saw the average daily sunspot number rise to 17.7, from 13 over the prior week. Average daily solar flux rose from 67.5 to 70.6. Average daily planetary A index rose from 10.1 to 19.9, while average mid-latitude A index rose from 10.4 to 13.4.
For HF operations, we want to see high solar flux and sunspot numbers, and low A index, a measure of geomagnetic instability. On Sunday, August 26 we saw high A index numbers from an unexpected crack, opening in Earth’s magnetic field. Solar wind spewed forth and the planetary A index rose to 76. During this period the planetary K index (a component of the A index) rose to 7 over a six-hour period. Seven is a big K index number.
The middle latitude A index for the day was 34. But Alaska felt the full force of the geomagnetic storm, with an A index in Fairbanks (the College A index) of 90, a very high number. The College A index hasn’t been that high since September 8, 2017 when it reached 110.
Spaceweather.com reported new sunspot group 2720 is the first large spot of the next solar cycle, Cycle 25. The magnetic polarity is reversed from the polarity of sunspots in Cycle 24.
Carl Luetzelshwab, K9LA, noted that the latest spot was not a high latitude event, which would be expected for a new cycle spot. Carl said there was a new spot possibly from the new cycle on April 10, but it was very short duration. Way back on December 20, 2016 the first spot from the new cycle appeared.
Predicted solar flux is 68 on August 31 through September 7, 67 on September 8-9, 68 on September 10-11, 69 on September 12, 70 on September 13-22, 69 on September 23-25, 67 and 68 on September 26-27, 67 on September 28 through October 6, then 68, 68 and 69 on October 7-9, and 70 on October 10-14.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on August 31 through September 2, 8 on September 3-4, 5, 5, and 8 on September 5-7, 5 on September 8-10, then 15 on September 11-12, 12 on September 13-14, then 10, 12 and 8 on September 15-17, 5 on September 18-21, then 12, 18, 12, 10, 8 and 5 on September 22-27, 8 on September 28-29, 5 on September 30 through October 3, 8 on October 4, 5 on October 5-7, then 18 on October 8, 15 on October 9-10, 12 on October 11, 10 on October 12-13, and 8 on October 14.

Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period August 31 to September 26, 2018 from F.K. Janda, OK1HH.
Geomagnetic field will be:
Quiet on September 2, 9, 17, 26
Quiet to unsettled on September 5-6, 10, 18, 24-25
Quiet to active on August 31, September 1, 8, 13-16, 18-20,
Unsettled to active on September 3-4, 7, 11-12, 23,
Active to disturbed on September 21-22
Solar wind will intensify on September (10-11,) 14-17, (21,) 22-24, (25)
Remarks:
- Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.
- Reliability of predictions remains low.
Comment:
I was asking around why no one (myself, though I hesitated) foresaw an immediate massive disturbance roughly one week ago. The answer is simple. In the analysis I neglected the freshest evolution on the Sun, especially the development in the active area 2720, which was much closer to the southern prick of north coronal polar hole than the previously dominant group 2719.
F.K. Janda, OK1HH

Here is an interesting article on the possible transition to Cycle 25: https://bit.ly/2wt0WEe
I found a possible source of confusion in the fourth paragraph of that article, “the transition period from Solar Cycle 24 to Solar Cycle 25 was deep and profound" should say Cycle 23 to Cycle 24. I believe we are currently about to enter the transition to Cycle 25.

The latest from Dr. Skov: “It comes as no surprise that I have mixed feelings about the collision of Space Weather and terrestrial weather this past week. On the one hand, aurora photographers got an unforgettable show over the weekend, with aurora views that rivaled the best from the biggest solar storms of this solar cycle. Indeed, the pictures are mesmerizing. On the other hand, however, I find myself squirming when I return to the moment I realized this solar storm was going to be worse than my worst-case predictions. The radio communications blackouts and poor GPS reception were painful to watch unfold during the largest hurricane to threaten Hawaii in more than 25 years.
“In the end, everyone seems to agree that Hurricane Lane was a close call. Luckily, it didn’t make landfall, but it’s slow speed and intensity was enough to cause massive flooding on the big island, leaving some people stranded and without the comforts of home. Had the situation been worse, amateur radio operators would have been a life line of communications, while GPS-enabled search and rescue drones would have done life-saving reconnaissance. Thank goodness that was not necessary. I remember last year when Hurricane Irma hit Puerto Rico, a set of extreme Space Weather events made amateur radio communications and satellite phones nearly inoperable for a week!  We dodged a bullet this time. But we cannot count on that. With hurricanes and cyclones on the rise, there is little doubt that a ‘perfect storm,’ in which Space Weather exacerbates an already bad situation, will return sooner than we think.
“In this week's forecast, I do my best to highlight the beauty of this recent solar storm, but also the danger. As the weather quiets down again and things return to "business as usual," I hope the memory of this perfect storm remains. It may not be all that often that Space Weather and Earth weather conspire like this, but when they do, we need to be sure we're ready.”

Estimated planetary A indices were 5, 5, 11, 76, 26, 10, and 6, with a mean of 19.9. Estimated mid-latitude A indices were 5, 7, 12, 34, 20, 9, and 7, with a mean of 13.4.

Propagation News – 2 September 2018

Just after we filed the propagation report last Friday we heard that a new large sunspot had just appeared. This pushed the solar flux index to 72, but more interesting was the fact that it appeared to have a reverse magnetic polarity to the rest of the spots in solar cycle 24. This means it may be the second spot seen of the new solar cycle 25. Time will tell, although this doesn’t necessarily mean that the new cycle is about to burst into life. We may still be at sunspot minimum for another 12 months or so.
Also last Sunday saw the Kp index rocket to seven due to the effects of an incoming high-speed solar wind stream. This was unexpected and caught space weather watchers unawares. It has now been linked to a coronal mass ejection that occurred earlier in the week that scientists didn’t think would impact the Earth. This just goes to show how hard it is to predict what the Sun is going to do one week in advance! The CME knocked the bands for six last weekend with a virtual total lack of signals across HF most of Sunday. With this information we are cautious about predicting what will happen over the next seven days!

What we can say is that the Sun is likely to remain fairly spotless, so the risk of solar flares is minimal. Sunspot number 2720, which did spark a number of flares on Friday, the 24th, has now rotated out of view, leaving a fairly blank canvas. Maximum usable frequencies are therefore due to return to seasonal averages, with 20 and perhaps occasionally 17 metres providing the most HF DX.

We are now moving towards the autumnal equinox so north-south paths may also start to improve, but we may have to wait another month or so for an improvement in east-west paths, such as UK to North America.

VHF propagation news:
Last Sunday’s 10GHz contest saw some excellent rain scatter propagation over the UK, with QSOs well up to the 400km mark. But the next spell of weather is looking much more settled with high pressure on the charts for much of next week. This could bring tropo back on the agenda for most areas of the country at times. That makes it a good week to get down to the multimode ends of the bands on VHF and UHF. Remember, tropo is a relatively long-lasting mode, so there is plenty of time to make the QSOs, unlike sporadic E, which can be very transient indeed. Also unlike sporadic E, tropo tends to get better on higher frequency bands, so 23cm is better than 70cm, which is better than 2m. The sporadic E season is just about over for this year and, although there can be openings into early September, they are hard to find and usually short-lasting.

Our most predictable propagation source, the Moon, is at positive declination all week and reaches perigee early on Saturday morning so it’s a good week for EME tests, with long availability and low losses. The Moon follows a 28-day cycle, where the plane of its orbit moves from south of the equator or negative declination, to north and back. Its distance from the Earth changes from closest or perigee to furthest, apogee.

Currently maximum declination and perigee almost coincide, favouring stations in the northern hemisphere, but this difference drifts slowly. By 2022 this situation will have reversed and southern hemisphere stations will get this coincidence.

** U S A [and non]. From the Isle of Music, September 2-8:

Our special guest this week is Roxana Iglesias, leader of Frasis, a very intriguing Fusion group in Cuba, plus some electroacoustic experimental music by Juan Blanco, one of Cuba's pioneers in that style. The transmissions take place:

1. For Eastern Europe but audible well beyond the target area in most of the Eastern Hemisphere (including parts of East Asia and Oceania) with 100 kW, Sunday 1500-1600 UT on SpaceLine, 9400, from Kostinbrod, Bulgaria (1800-1900 MSK)

2. For the Americas and parts of Europe, Tuesday 0000-0100 UT on WBCQ, 7490 from Monticello, ME, USA (Monday 8-9 PM EDT in the US). This has been audible in parts of NW, Central and Southern Europe with an excellent skip to Italy recently.

3 & 4. For Europe and sometimes beyond, Tuesday 1900-2000 UT and Saturday 1200-1300 UT on Channel 292, 6070 from Rohrbach, Germany.

Also recommended:
1. Jetzt geht's los! (Here We Go!), an excellent program of early German Jazz produced by Radio Ohne Nahmen, comes on right before FTIOM on Tuesdays 1800-1900 UT on Channel 292.

Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, Sun, September 2 & Tue, September 4, 2018
Episode 78 presents modern music from Peru. The broadcasts take place:

** BANGLADESH. 15505, Aug 30 at 1356, Bangladesh Betar is already on with 1 kHz tone --- best I`ve heard it in ages. Tone stops at 1358:15 and lovely haunting interval signal starts a few seconds later, repeating multiply until 5+1 mis-timesignal ending at 1400:08, and announcement starting Urdu service to the former west wing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRIA. 11880, Aug 29 at 2109, very poor talk at S0-S1, maybe French? No, AWR English via Moosbrunn is scheduled until 2130; before RHC takes over circa 2200 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 5035, Aug 29 at 0627, JBA carrier with fades. I suppose it has to be one of the ZYs, more likely R. Aparecida. By now the ACI splash from 5040 Cuba is off, allowing at least this much to be detected (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13700, Aug 29 at 1301, RHC cuts on and off during attempt at frequency announcement; by 1308 stays on, but fails to accompany with panoply of FM signals across the band. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

6000, UT Thu Aug 30 at 0637, RHC English is again suptorted here; 6100 = 6165 undermodulated but not distorted; only 6060 is VG as `Arts Roundup` is starting. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. 7435, Aug 30 at 0423, R. Martí with electronic/keyboard music, no announcements, pauses between trax, only during which some jamming is audible vs S9+25. Same on // 7335, and 6030. I keep listening the rest of the hour to this very strange ``programming`` for RM. Including repeats of some of the same tunes! Now I`m convinced Greenville has lost program feed from Miami studio and is filling with this, which continues even past 0500, altho 7435 to 7365 QSY happens on time with a 28-second break before 7365 cuts back on at *0500:00 sharp with carrier, rejoining others with music at 0500:27. By 0641 final check, both 7 MHz signals have faded way down below the jamming level, but 6030 is back to programming with talk and clips of music videos. For fun at 0453 I also tried 1180 to // the music, but the only QRM to the echoey Rebeldeblast was English, probably WHAM.

11860, the new Martí frequency at 14-22, colliding head-on with RHC after 1930, is also supposedly employed in the nightmiddle at 07-10 according to Ivo. During awake chex at 0704 & 0915 Aug 30, it is inaudible, but hardly expected to propagate here or there. OCB has still failed to register it at all in the latest HFCC files as of 29 August. At those hours, something even below 6 MHz band would be much more effective: propagation 101 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUATEMALA. 4055, Aug 29 at 0632, carrier still on and seemingly open, from R. Truth (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KIRITIMATI. 846, Aug 29 at 0629, JBA carrier yet audible thru storm noise, from R. Kiribati no doubt. Also August 30 as early as 0456. Gaisma.com claims sunset at Ronton (London), Xmas Island is 19:34 local minus 12 for UT = 0734! But
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/kiribati/kiritimati
shows this part of Kiribati is on UT +14 (which = Hawaii UT -10 on other side of dateline!), sunset at 18:34 local minus 14 = 0434 UT! So gaisma is all wrong about this one. And so is WRTH 2018, implying it`s all UT+12; at presstime there was no 846 but there was FM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185, Aug 30 at 0431, S9+20 Spanish quite undermodulated, but turning up volume with ECSS helps, drama mentioning UNAM, and 0436 Radio Educación ID which XEPPM is still using on Mexico`s only SWBC station left standing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOLOMON ISLANDS. 5020, Aug 29 at 0630, JBA carrier presumed SIBC where it`s almost Honiara sunset at 0718. Nothing yet from 4835 Queensland, which Manuel Méndez says he detected in Spain this early, longpath. We have 4840 WWCR with which to contend, but sometimes MUF falling below (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SUDAN SOUTH [non]. 11620, Aug 30 at 0415, Eye Radio via MADAGASCAR this hour M-F, YL in heavily African-accented English very hard to understand, news mentioning Juba, S5 with deep fades. (Since there are multiple mutually incomprehensible native African languages influencing how English be spoken, one would assume various other Africans would also have a hard time understanding a different ESL version, right? Everyone should strive for an American accent as compromise, hi) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. 7375, Aug 30 at 0424, VOA via BOTSWANA talking about an ECOWAS radio station in English, French, Portuguese, something new, maybe on SW?? But soon on to another topic about domestic violence against women in Sénégal.

Searching finds news that the Economic Community of West African States got a radio station in Monrovia, Liberia, in March 2018. It had been a UN station, then transferred to ECOWAS. WTFK, FM only? WRTH had UNMIL Radio on 91.5 in Monrovia, plus three others elsewhere. Searching voanews.com on ecowas radio gets no recent hits (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1945 monitoring: barely confirmed, Wed Aug 29 at 2103 on WBCQ 7490+, VP in noise level, gh voice recognized but only presumed it`s the latest edition --- until 2114 when my rotating mid-show catchprase is the one I utter this week, ``the media magazine you monitor with your mind``!

But once again this week, 9955 WRMI is OFF past 2100, until *2102 Wed Aug 29, JIP WOR a sesquiminute late; could they start turning on this transmitter a few minutes earlier?? At S6-S7; 9395 was already on at S7-S8. Next:

** U S A. 9455, UT Thu Aug 30 at 0058, WRMI is on with weekly BS emission on this frequency, ID, at 0100 over to weekly `Hal Turner` 2-hour talkshow starting with wacky disclaimer, and now // 7490 WBCQ staying on late this night only. He announces these two SW stations and ONE other affiliate: 540 KYAH in Delta UT --- the same one carrying WTWW`s UT Sunday midnight show, 13 watts at night. But KYAH can legally run day power 1 kW until 0230 UT in August; only -0145 in September (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7730, Aug 30 at 0420, WRMI in Spanish so colloquial I wonder if it`s really Spanish, or Italian? No, heavy porteño accent as someone is being interviewed about Radio Mitre, during `La Rosa de Tokio` as now scheduled this hour on UT Thursdays (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15610 & 12050, Aug 29 at 2108, no signals from WEWN English or Spanish. Possibly propagation? Maybe on the higher one, but I don`t think so. Something`s frequently wrong at WEWN; or could be closedown during storm or mowing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 92.7, Aug 29 at 1512 UT, ``The New 92-7, The Blast``, i.e. KWME Wellington KS, as already listed by WTFDA DB with 14 kW H&V, 130m HAAT, so how ``new`` is it? Format designation as ``rhythmic oldies``. (Show me an Oldie, or any pop music, without rhythm?) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4170-USB, Aug 30 at 0446, surprised to hear some 2-way, maybe Greek or Spanish, atop my local third harmonic of KCRC 1390. It`s within a marine comms band, but is 4170 for anything in particular? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4810, Aug 30 at 0443, JBA carrier again sideswiped by huge utehash on the upper side. I`ve reported this at least twice recently and no one has replied to my inquiry whether it could be Radio Logos, Perú, the only likely broadcaster at this hour, if it`s active, rather than Armenia or India (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7581.40, Aug 30 at 0422, open carrier at S9, some fades. Maybe ute (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 14018-LSB, Aug 29 at 1253, very poor 2-way, unknown language. Presumably INTRUDERS as hams would not be in phone here in the CW portion of 20m band, nor would they not be in USB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Radio Seabreeze which is currently being broadcast on 747kHz from the Radio Ship “Jenni Baynton” (LV8) is also on its normal frequency 1395kHz from Grou,The Netherlands with 100watts.
1395kHz is a few seconds behind 747kHz,and here in Faversham North East Kent I am able to hear both frequencies with 747kHz giving the best reception.

Glenn Hauser logs August 28-29, 2018

** ANGUILLA. 6090, UT Wed Aug 29 at 0141, CariBeacon is back on with PMS, having missed its 2-day-a-week broadcasts on UT Mon & Tue, so making up for that? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11780 RF, Aug 29 at 0133, RNA is back in whack in AM here, ex-11686-FM all afternoon and evening yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000, Aug 28 at 0607, RHC English is very undermodulated here and somewhat distorted, while 6165 is as soft but not distorted; 6100 is JBA, and 6060 is very good strength and modulation. So at least one of them is working. Something`s always wrong at RHC.

6000, UT Wed Aug 29 at 0142, just as Arnie is ending mit-week edition of `DXers Unlimited`, RHC English is just barely modulated here, somewhat louder on // 6165. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 4765, Aug 29 at 0143, R. Progreso is off, while 5025 & 5040 remain on; by 0349, 4765 is back on but undermodulated, S9+10/20 about same level as 5025 Rebelde, but which is better modulated. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 13899, 13831, 13766, 13634, 13567, 13501, 13434, approx. frequencies of extremely distorted FM spurblobs out of the 13700-AM transmitter, August 28 at 1328, so RHC-FM has been reactivated at ~67 kHz intervals, first time heard in about a month. Helps that fundamental is extremely strong at S9+30/40. All including 13700 still have that F# tone above C middle, and only the tone can be detected at the furthest ones out. The four closest and very strong ones are quite readable with FM tuning. Recheck at 1320, just a trace at 13634 & 13766, tho 13700 is still S9+30. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1945, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Aug 28 at 0605, VON is finally back on, with the bigsig Hausa hour, S9+20; had not been heard for at least a dekaday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1945, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1944 monitoring: presumed final play on WRMI, Tuesday August 28 at 2030 on 5950 and 7780 not checked here, but Mark Coady in Ontario says 7780 was ``extremely weak``.

WORLD OF RADIO 1945 contents: Anguilla, Antarctica, Australia and non, Bhutan, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Cuba and non, Europe, Germany, India, Indonesia, Mauritania, Netherlands non, Nigeria and non, Norway, Perú, Russia, São Tomé, Solomon Islands, Spain, USA, unidentified, propagation outlook

WOR 1945 ready for first airing Tuesday August 28 at 2130 on WRMI 5950, and this week I am barely able to confirm it, checked at 2156. Not confirmed Tue Aug 28 at 2330 on WBCQ, as BS played on. Next:

** U S A. 7490v, UT Wed Aug 29 at 0140, WBCQ is off, as apparently since at least August 25, Blalock the Blaster is no longer running daily at 0100. Except UT Thu will probably still run Hal Turner instead (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5129.83, UT Wed Aug 29 at 0146, this WBCQ has been turned on for presumed `Amateur Radio Roundtable` with W5KUB, but too far down in the noise to copy; while 5085, WTWW-2 is inbooming with another ham show. It`s no accident, as when W5KUB pulled off WTWW, Ted retaliated by putting his own QSO show on at the same time ~45 kHz away. Unfortunately, QSO wins by strength, but ARR also has a video webcast. Otherwise, 5130- is now off most of the time with no more BS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

1602 and 747 from the Netherlands

The 1-kW transmitter on 1602 in Harlingen, Friesland (page 296 of WRTH 2018) is now relaying Cyber Gold Radio (rather than KBC) at 0500-1700 GMT. According to Cyber Gold's website, this relay began on 1 July: https://www.cyberradio.co.uk/cyber-news/cyber-gold-to-launch

Reception in Sheringham, north Norfolk, is weak-fair but very clear on ordinary portables. It's a 175-mile all-sea path from Harlingen to Sheringham.

1602 still relays Radio Seagull after 1700 GMT, heard in parallel with the 0.1-kW transmitter on 747, also in Harlingen. None of the other low-power Dutch transmitters on 747 are audible in the daytime here.

Russia, Ukraine Battle For Crimean Airwaves

Since Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, it has sought to control all aspects of life on the peninsula, including its airwaves. Russian transmissions are jamming frequencies broadcast from the Ukrainian mainland, while Kyiv fights back with new and upgraded radio towers.

Glenn Hauser logs August 27-28, 2018

** ANGUILLA. 6090, Aug 27 at 0626, Caribbean Beacon is still off like earlier this evening, even tho it`s UT Monday when normally active running all night. But who needs it? 5935 WWCR is VG S9+20. Day frequency 11775 also off at 1404 check. 6090 still off Aug 28 circa 0045 when it is normally on for a few more hours into UT Tuesday. Still no sign of it here on MW 1610, nor has anyone else reported it to my knowledge (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL [and non]. 11686, Aug 27 at 1955, approx. center of big dirty distorted FM blob spanning some 10 kHz --- I bet it`s RNA/RNB way out of whack again, and indeed missing from 11780-AM (but there is a JBA carrier, presumed VOA Botswana until 2000). R75 reads 11686 S5-S6 in FM mode, S7-S8 in AM mode. Even in FM tuning, it`s very distorted but partially readable, improving at fade-ups.

At 2000 yes, it`s Brazuguese, mentions ``Nacional`` ID and news headlines; 2003 mentions Rádio Nacional Amazônia, 2004 listing a number of kHz of outlets, but certainly not this one!! 11686 is 94 kHz down from 11780, so I wonder if there will be another FM blob 2 x 94 = 188 kHz down around 11592? There is a noise peak, but probably unrelated, and no others found in or around 25m. Recheck at 2054, still 11686 and gaining strength, and still no 11780.

11686-FM not rechecked again until 0020 UT August 28, and is still there at S9. This time I`m on the NRD-545 which seems to demodulate the FM distortion a bit more clearly. At 0038 the DJs are greeting Boa Vista, Roraima (now overflowing with Venezuelan refugees), and also to camioneros all over Brasil (truck drivers; they should all be equipped with Motobrás SW radios). 0056 talking about Pará. RNA will probably remain on 11686 until s/off, circa 0300*? But what about tomorrow? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6100, Aug 27 at 0626, RHC English (presumed) is a JJBBA carrier, while 6165, 6060 and 6000 are merely JBA carriers, as major geomag storm has blacked out signals even as far south as 23 degrees north beyond the Tropic of Cancer, like all of Cuba. Not blaming RHC this time; or should I? TN signals on 5935 & 5830, further north and less than half as far, remain S9+10 to 20, while in some other less disturbed nightmiddles, they are losing out as Cuba remains (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 11860, Monday August 27 at 1404, Radio Martí is running atop jamming, after another weekend off, as it starts its third week on this new frequency honoring Fidel. Recheck 2055, it is also *still* colliding directly with RHC which started 11860 in April, the two making a SAH of about 6 Hz, and taking turns fading up & down vs the other, and now not much noise jamming audible. Yet there are plenty of open frequencies on 25m. How much longer will this go on? A battle to the death --- or no one at either service notices and/or cares? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 11980, Aug 28 at 0035, JBA carrier with traces of talk, RHC spur? I try but just too weak, can`t make a modulation match to loud 12000; but I do compute that this could well be a leapfrog of RHC 11700 over 11840 (which are both confirmed on & strong), another 140 kHz higher; a new one for me. No fundamentals on 11980 are known at this hour to HFCC or Aoki/NDXC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 5040, Aug 28 at 0042, RHC is AWOL from this but 5025 Rebelde is VG with béisbol. Its only 5+ MHz companion is 5010 WRMI, always weak, as no US stations are to be heard on 5050 WWRB, 5085 WTWW, nor 5130 WBCQ! Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6870, Aug 28 at 0027, weak AM carrier, off & on, up to S7-S8, off & on again, 0028 song starts; still at 0050 hard rock. Only two reports here,
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,45484.0.html
the first one saying it`s Mix Radio at 0125-0157+, no one having heard it earlier when I did --- if it`s the same one (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1944 monitoring: confirmed UT Tuesday August 28 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG S9+35. Next:

** U S A. 5830, Aug 27 at 0626, WTWW-1 is on at S9+10 despite blackout reaching Cuba; by 1405, has switched to 9475; by 0032 August 28, already back to 5830, in highly variable day/night QSY times (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs August 26-27, 2018

** ANGUILLA. 6090, UT Monday Aug 27 at 0048, no signal from Caribbean Beacon, which is normally active on UT Mondays and Tuesdays only. I think I did hear 11775 earlier during the day on Sunday Aug 26 as I tuned around, but not logged. That should also be on daytime Aug 27. See also USA: WWCR 5935 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 9630.5, Aug 27 at 0051, very poor signal in Brazuguese, R. Aparecida, one of few signals on band during propagation disturbance, stronger than 9395 & 9955 WRMI degraded to JBA carriers, but less than 9570, CRI via Albania at S4-S5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 6173.92, Aug 27 at 0049, JBA carrier on the signature off-frequency of Radio Tawantinsuyo, which Anker Petersen recently confirmed active using a South American SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA [and non]. 11904.9, August 27 at 0055, SLBC is S1 but some S Asian music audible, better than I usually hear it from *0031v. It also cuts off early during song at 0058:09*. Strange trans-polar propagation as not yet recovered from major geomag storm. Not much else on 25m except 11780 Brasil the SSOB at S5-S7 but undermodulated, and stronger than any attenuated Cubans (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1944 monitoring: confirmed by Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria: ``GERMANY, Reception of World of Radio via HLR on 9485-CUSB, August 26:
http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.com/2018/08/reception-of-world-of-radio-via-hlr-on_26.html
1030-1100 on 9485 GOH 001 kW / 230 deg to CeEu English Sun, weak to fair; Wrong frequency announcement:"...HLR SW Sce on 7265 kHz", instead of 9485!``

Major geomagnetic storm and aftermath made the already weak 7780 WRMI a JBA carrier or less, for the scheduled WOR times, so unconfirmed Sunday August 26 at 2130 and UT Monday August 27 at 0130.5; but the latter also on 5850, still propagating very well and confirmed there. (The normally inbooming other 7s from WRMIBS, 7570 & 7730 are also quite weakened.) WOR also confirmed UT Monday August 27 starting at 0302 on Area 51 webcast; 0327 check of 5129.8 WBCQ finds a JBA carrier. 9955 WRMI was JBA carrier too, virtually inaudible, so not checked further, but 0330 WOR confirmed during WRMI webcast at 0345, and also at 0427 for the immediate webcast-only playback from 0400 --- but the webcast audio is way low, barely registering but quite audible with volume all the way up. Next:
Mon 2330   WBCQ 9330v to WSW [maybe]
Tue 0030   WRMI 7730 to WNW
Tue 2030   WRMI 7780 to NE, 5950 to WNW [or #1945?]
Tue 2130   WRMI 5950 to WNW [or #1945?]

(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7570, Aug 26 at 2337, surprised to hear WRMI in Spanish here, gospel huxter. Supposed to be Overcomer from 2300, and has been only in English whenever on. Maybe Fámily Radio which this hour is supposed to be on 5010 only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5935, Aug 27 at 0045, WWCR with PMS from TUN, but mixed with crackling which splatters up to 10 kHz plus and minus. Meanwhile, Anguilla 6090 is missing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5050, Aug 27 at 0059, dead air, then YL opening gospel huxter show from North Carolina, but hard to understand very lofi modulation, then cutting out and in. S9+50 signal anyway from WWRB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 830, UT Monday Aug 27 at 0108 UT, Spanish tropi-rap (real term for particular genre unknown), 0111 YL ID as ``Fabulosa, 830 y 97.5``, which means it`s the expected WFNO Norco LA (address in Metairie), 5000/750 watts U4, and the FM is mere translator K248BB. Totally dominating channel, no sign of WCCO MN, too far into the subauroral zone with high K-index (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 840, UT Monday Aug 27 at 0106 UT, opening headlines teasing `Perspective` from ABC, YL anchor, stingers. Haven`t heard this weekly newsmagazine in ages. Must be WHAS Louisville KY, perhaps a reliable time for it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1550, re my unID jazz station August 26 at 0635 UT, Greg Hardison, CA, replies: ``Glenn, anything is possible from WAZX Smyrna, GA. Remote monitoring has shown this thing to be on one day, silent the next, then on again, et al. -- with programming in Spanish, Vietnamese, continuous Classic Rock, et al, et al. Nothing is keeping WAZX from trying its hand at Jazz (which would be a notable improvement to the highly religious/right wing Atlanta AM dial); the 50 kW daytime authorization does get out rather well. Just sayin'. - GREG HARDISON`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 - 26 August 2018

Solar activity was at very low levels. Regions 2719 (S07, L=131,
class/area Cro/040 on 23 Aug) and 2720 (N08, L=136, class/area
Dao/100 on 25 Aug) developed on the solar disk on 18 Aug and 23 Aug
respectively. Both regions were responsible for several low level
B-class flares. The largest was a B4 flare at 25/1048 UTC from
Region 2720. Other activity included two coronal mass ejections
(CME) observed on 19 and 20 Aug. The first was a narrow CME off the
SW limb at 19/0812 UTC in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery. The CME originated
from a filament eruption near S09W06 at 19/0542 UTC. The latter CME
was caused by a filament eruption at approximately 20/1100 UTC from
the NW quadrant. An associated faint partial halo CME was observed
off the W/SW limb at 20/2136 UTC in C2 imagery. WSA/ENLIL modelling
of the events showed only weak effects from possible glancing blows
late on 21 Aug and late on 24 Aug.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached
high levels throughout the period. The largest flux of the period
was 10,300 pfu observed at 21/2150 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G3 (Strong)
geomagnetic storm levels. The period began under the influence of a
negative polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Solar
wind speeds were elevated to near 670 km/s with total field
initially at 12 nT on 20 Aug. By 21 Aug, solar wind speed was in
decline while total field was at 5 nT or less. Solar wind slowly
decreased over the next few days as nominal conditions were reached
by 23 Aug. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active
levels on 20 Aug, quiet to unsettled levels on 21-22 Aug and quiet
levels on 23 Aug. By 24 Aug, a small discontinuity could be seen in
the total field. A small increase to 7 nT was observed at 24/1116
UTC while the Bz component deflected southward to -6 nT, however the
solar wind speed continued to decrease to near 325 km/s by the end
of the day. As a result, quiet to unsettled levels were observed on
24 Aug. By 25 Aug, solar wind speed increased briefly to 460 km/s at
25/1305 UTC before declining once again, however total field began
to increase beginning at 25/1210 UTC as effects from the 20 Aug CME
were beginning. By 26 Aug, total field increased to 18 nT and
remained there for approximately 12 hours. The Bz component was
mostly negative reaching a maximum of -17 nT for approximately 24
hours beginning at 25/1600 UTC. Solar wind speed once again showed
an increase at 26/0730 UTC from 370 km/s to near 550 km/s by the
periods end as the solar wind stream was transitioning into a
positive polarity CH HSS. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet
to active levels on 25 Aug and unsettled to G3 (Strong) storm levels
on 26 Aug.

FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 27 AUGUST-22 SEPTEMBER 2018

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a slight
chance for C-class flare activity on 27-29 Aug and again on 11-22
Sep as Regions 2719 and 2720 return to the visible disk. Very low
levels are expected for the rest of the forecast period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at high levels on 27 Aug-03 Sep, 12-15 Sep, and again
on 17-19 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active
levels on 27-30 Aug, 01-02 Sep, 07 Sep, 11-17 Sep, and 22 Sep with
G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels expected early on 27 Aug due to
CH HSS activity.

New temporary station on 1593 kHz from 27 August in Sweden

My station ”Asfalttelegrafen” or ”Asphalttelegraph” in English got license from MPRT (Myndigheten for press, radio och TV) and PTS (Post and Telecom Agency) to broadcast rock radio on 1593 kHz with 200 watt ERP from Boraas City, South Sweden. I wait on a delivery on a sound compressor. I have done some hours of tests broadcast and today I finished the antenna work and have now all the power on the air. The license start on 27th of August to 9 of September 2018. This is a temporary station 2 weeks before the national parliament elections, with some political messages only in Swedish and much Music from the 1970s. Reception reports are welcome on 1593khz@gmail.com. Station ID in Swedish and English is coming. (Torleif Roos, Boraas Sweden 26/8-2018 via mediumwave.info)

Glenn Hauser logs August 26, 2018

** CUBA. 7435, Aug 26 at 0026, pulse jamming against nothing, since R. Martí switches 7365 to this frequency only between 03 and 05. Something`s always wrong at the DentroCuban Jamming Command (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000, Aug 26 at 0628, again tonight modulation on this RHC English frequency is suptorted, as AC starts his science bit about Cuba being concerned over rising sea levels caused by polar melting. Something`s always wrong at RHC. // 6060 is best at S9+10/20 with good modulation; // 6100 and 6165 middling mod but not suptorted (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 7425, Aug 26 at 0630, RNZ is S9+10/20 with heavy flutter! A rarity on this trans-equatorial signal, tnx to major geomag storm with K-index of 7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Aug 26 at 0629, again no signal from VON, still presumed off, altho current K index of 7 might be enough to take out even this low-latitude super signal aimed USward. But NZ is in one minute later, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9955, Aug 26 at 1334, WRMI playing ``Up2 & Away``, part of the World Music fill loop, so the scheduled Sunday 1330 program, `Word for the World` has failed to fire (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, UT Sunday August 26 at 0626, WTWW-2 is on with weekly talkshow, but VP reception, barely registers S9, same as noise level. Normally this blasts in the nightmiddle. Other TN frequencies in the megameter range: 5830 WTWW JBA; 4840 & 5935 WWCR also VP. 3215 might still make it, except WWCR made it dispensable overnight and silenced it months ago. We are in a major geomagnetic storm, G3 level past and next 24 hours, WWV reported, a rare K-index reading of 7 at 0600!

5830, Aug 26 at 1422, WTWW-1 night frequency still running with SFAW; K index eased to 5 by 1500. Back up to 6 at 1800, but now 9475 is propagating, not much on higher bands (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 7315, Aug 26 at 0027, WHRI with hymn and free-Bible offer, inserted during VOV relay block; 0030, back to its stilted LVV Spanish. Strange bedfellows (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1550, Aug 26 at 0635 UT, continuous piano jazz amid the CCI. Not KUAZ AZ which is 50 kW but daytimer; unlikely WZUM PA which is 24h jazz format but only 4 watts at night! Last March 24 at 0607 UT I also had unID 1550 scat, and guessed maybe CBEF = CBC French Windsor Ont. Of all nights, nothing from north to be expected now with K index of 7. Unlikely any of the Mexicans. 1550 is full of Rebeldes all over Cuba (and a few Progresos) to block WRHC, so I should have compared to 5025. Any other ideas about US stations? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
