Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 October 2016

Solar activity was at very low levels during the period. The two
numbered regions on the visible disk were Region 2603 (N13, L=340,
class/area Dao/080 on 26 October) and 2604 (N07, L=261, class/area
Bxo/010 on 29 October). Other activity included a slow moving
coronal mass ejection (CME) directed mostly south of the ecliptic
beginning at 30/1012 UTC in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery. The source of the
CME was unclear and may be associated with magnetic re-connection
near S30E15. Preliminary analysis indicated a possible weak glancing
blow arrival around midday on 04 November. Further analysis is
currently underway.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at
moderate levels on 24-25 October and reached high levels from 26-30
October. The largest flux value of the period was 47,726 pfu
observed at 27/1530 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G3 (Strong) storm
levels. The period started off under the waning influence of a weak
isolated positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS).
Solar wind speeds were mostly in the 380 km/s to 430 km/s range with
total field values between 5 nT and 10 nT and prolonged periods of
southward Bz. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active
levels on 24 October. Early on 25 October, total field began to rise
to a maximum of 21 nT at 25/1016 UTC while the Bz component
deflected southward to -17 nT indicating the onset of a co-rotating
interaction region. This was followed by a rise in solar wind speed
to around 750-830 km/s as a large, polar-connected, positive
polarity CH HSS moved into geoeffective position. Coronal hole
influence declined to the 530-680 km/s by midday on 27 October and
remained there until the end of the period. The geomagnetic field
responded with active to G3 (Strong) storm levels on 25 October,
active to G2 (Moderate) storm levels on 26 October, unsettled to G1
(Minor) storm levels on 27 and 29 October, unsettled to active
levels on 28 October, and quiet to active levels on 30 October.

FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 31 OCTOBER-26 NOVEMBER 2016

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels
throughout the forecast period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is
expected to be at moderate levels with high levels likely from 31
October-06 November, 12-19 November, and again from 22-26 November
due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active
levels from 31 October-01 November, 11-15, and 19-26 November with
G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 13, 21-23, and 25 November and G2
(Moderate) storm levels likely on 21-22 November due to recurrent CH
HSS activity.

Lugo, Spain

Glenn Hauser logs October 30-31, 2016

** ARGENTINA. 28463-USB, Oct 30 at 2235, LU8EOT contest contacts with Japan; deep fading. ``LU8EOT Argentina, flag Argentina, Mariano Colacilli (Mark), Pasteur 303, Escobar 1625 BA, Argentina``. His antennas are huge bird roosts.

28425-USB, Oct 30 at 2238, LU7HN with contest contacts: ``LU7HN Argentina, flag Argentina, RENE ERNESTO GIORDA, AV. CERVANTES 3879, SAN FRANCISCO (2400) CORDOBA 2400, Argentina`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) More 10m ham logs in this report: BRAZIL, COOK ISLANDS SOUTH, HAWAII, URUGUAY

** BRAZIL. 28355-USB, Oct 30 at 2226, PV2P making quick contest contacts in English, the SSOB at S9. Very pleased to find 10m open, and it takes a contest to prove that. A few minutes before, I found 15m open, but nothing on 12m (presumably off-limits for the contest). QRZ.com shows merely: ``PV2P Brazil, flag Brazil, CONTEST CALLSIGN PY2DY, SAO PAULO Brazil`` --- so who is PY2DY? ``PY2DY Brazil, flag Brazil, TONY PY2DY, RUA VISC. DE INHOMERIM 1093 AP.162, SAO PAULO, SP 03120001, Brazil`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COOK ISLANDS SOUTH. 28465.9-USB, Oct 30 at 2232, E51JD, Jim on Rarotonga which he spells for the ignorant, with leisurely contact, so apparently not contesting during the contest. QRZ.com shows: ``E51JD South Cook Islands, flag South Cook Islands, JIM DITCHBURN, P O BOX 491, RAROTONGA, COOK ISLANDS, SOUTH PACIFIC, VIA NEW ZEALAND, South Cook Islands, QSL: E51JD WITH 2 GREEN STAMP & SELFADDRESS, SELF SEAL ENVELOPE`` That`s lingo for 2 US$ return postage. And you`re out of luck if he has to lick the envelope --- good to be cautious, altho there are devices for tongueless moistening of stamps or envelopes as I used to employ for RIB. All foreign subscribers got a wide new selexion of commemoratives on every issue rather than permit postage (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. 7405, Oct 30 at 2243, Radio Martí is VG with no jamming yet. Strangely enough, this frequency is B-16 registered for one hour only, 22-23. Jammers do run on it at other hours now vacated.

7365, Oct 31 at 0159, I`m checking whether this Radio Martí is really on here for only one hour? Yes, cut off amid silly ballgame at 0200 sharp, and 7435 comes up about 17 seconds later, off, and back on to stay, leaving the jamming behind on  7365.

7435, Oct 31 at 0606, R. Martí at S9+30, no jamming caught up with this yet either. 7435 hours are now 00-01, 02-07, 12-14 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also SOUTH AFRICA: 5980

** HAWAII. 28492-USB, Oct 30 at 2230, KH7CW with contest contacts, from Zone 31, barely working W7EOV/mobile and trying to extract his true zone. Remember when Hawaii was only KH6? Did they run out of such calls? QRZ.com lookup shows: The Coconut Wireless Contest Club, 98-1559 Akaaka St, Aiea, Oahu, HI 96701 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 5960, Oct 31 at 0324, J-pop song at S9, as for B-16, NHK Japanese via FRANCE to Central America has moved here from 5910, escaping the collision with COLOMBIA if and when active. HJDH still faces ROMANIA, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 6170, Oct 31 at 1309, typical Juche music, as VOK has reoccupied channel for B-16 now that RNZI is gone. Arnulf Piontek`s B-16 schedule (same as A-16, he says) shows 1030-1330 at 28 degrees to Americas, final hour really KCBS in Korean. Still at 1330-2130 switched to 325 degrees for Europe (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 9400, Oct 31 around 1330, Denge Kurdistane remains well-heard with little if any QRM from FEBC. Ivo Ivanov corrects the site schedule I quoted previously, saying that the switch from PRIDNESTROVYE to Bulgaria is now at 1500 instead of 1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR. 5010.59, Oct 31 at 0247, S7 carrier vs splash from 5015 WRMIBS. Presumed the constantly varying R. Madagasikara, nominally from *0300 per WRTH. (Dave Valko in PA had this? on 5010.63 as early as 1930 Oct 26. Wolfgang Büschel had it on 5010.110-5010.180 at 1633 Oct 9 vs India. And Sept 23 on 5010.796; Sept 14 at 1800: ``5010.550 kHz variable, Malagasy Radio Madigasikara, narrowed 5010.538 ... x.568 kHz much variable, hopping 10-20 Hertz up and down``. Another possibility if it were stable and much closer to 5010.0 would be the Cuban leapfrog mixing product of 5040 over 5025 another 15 kHz down (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 9700, Oct 31 at 1309, RNZI is VG with news about Palau (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also KOREA NORTH

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Oct 31 at 0305 UT, KZLS Enid-Hennessey-OKC with double audio, an ad for something and an Ad Council PSA at equal levels. 0306 both stop at same instant, for single audio on ``Free Talk Live, Hour 3``, host not apologizing for the error (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 5960, Oct 30 at 0240, poor S8 signal in French, which is RRI as now scheduled to E North America // listed 7410 (5960 also English at 01-02, // 7325 where also heard).

Don`t you believe another but fanciful HFCC registration on 5960, for R. Kuwait from Kabd site starting at 0200, since it`s been completely off SW for a few years --- so why do they keep registering schedules (plus 11 more), a remote chance of resuming or to save face? Or so a MOI rep can still attend HFCC conferences on government payroll as a perk? And why does HFCC put up with such woodenness?

5910, Oct 31 at 0242, RRI in Romanian // 7340, poor S5 mixing with music from COLOMBIA. RRI at 01-03 is now the nemesis of that, clear afterwards except for NHK Russian via Lithuania at 0430-0500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH AFRICA. 6155, Oct 31 at 0326, S8-S9 news from Kinshasa, as Channel Africa in English is now here at 03-04 M-F, 250 kW, 19 degrees from Meyerton, but sufficient way over here for news direct from Africa. Altho SABC management has been subject of huge scandals.

Replaces 5980 in the A-season, which suffers from the WWCR leapfrog of 5890 over 5935 another 45 kHz higher, and also from intermittent Cuban jamming long before R. Martí would use it, 07-13. ChAf is still // on 3345 plus another hour of English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 5960, Oct 30 at 2257 past 2300, no signal from VOT on reactivated B-16 frequency for English to North America. Must be late coming up, not unusual for the slipshod operators at Emirler. Recheck at 2328, now it`s on at fair S9 level, really 5960.017, off-frequency plus also being typical.

9650, Oct 30 at 0232, very poor S3 signal is one of few barely propagating on band, enough to recognize the ``Pregunta del Mes`` theme music from VOT, Spanish now an hour later and on different B-16 frequencies, the other being 9410 but not checked; should be weaker aimed further south, like ex-9870 compared to ex-9770, at ex-0100+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1849 monitoring: confirmed Sunday October 30 at 2330 on WBCQ, 9329.991v-CUSB, S9+10. Also confirmed UT Monday October 31 from 0302:05 on Area 51 via WBCQ, 5130.05, but just barely audible, and down to only a JBA carrier at 0323. Also confirmed UT Monday October 31 at 0330 on WRMI 9955, which is also JBA at S1. K-index 3 at 0300, solar flux only 76 for Oct 30. Next:
Mon 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
Tue 0030   WRMI 7730 to WNW
Tue 1100   WRMI 9955 to SSE
Tue 2130   WRMI 15770 to NE
Tue 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
Wed 1315.5 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 2100   WBCQ 7490v to WSW
Wed 2330   WBCQ 9330v-CUSB to WSW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 9955, Sunday Oct 30 at 2245, I can barely make out Ray Robinson`s voice reading some radio-history script, so it must be `Wavescan` under wall-of-noise jamming, which WRMI has brought upon itself by scheduling Radio Libertad both before and after the 22-23 UT hour, at least on weekdays. Other English programming at 22-23 is also collaterally damaged (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7570, UT Mon Oct 31 at 0127 on WRMI, African percussion music, i.e. World Music default, instead of the scheduled special at 01-03 from PCJ Radio International, From the Archives of Radio Nederland, part 4! The previous airing at 06 to Europe on 7780 was also a no-show, and I believe with the same music when I checked circa 0629. Still music at 0200, but at 0231 recheck back to BS already.

7780, UT Mon Oct 31 at 0605 check, this WRMI is again playing World Music fill instead of Brother Scare, just like it was doing 24 hours earlier when it was supposed to be running the PCJ special. Such mixups have happened previous months, to be made good the following week (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11580, Monday Oct 31 before and after 1315, WRMI with World Music, and also at 1429 romantic song in Spanish, before #1 transmitter goes back to BS at 1500 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11520, Oct 30 at 2213, WEWN English with caller mentioning that ``Obama is a Muslim``, and talkhost does not correct her! Just another example of the political sewage spewed out by private US SW stations. Meanwhile, WEWN Spanish is on 12050. One would have expected English to be on 15610 at this hour, as it was in A-16. In fact, HFCC B-16 shows 11520 for WEWN only at 00-13 UT! And 15610 at 13-24, so they are totally off-schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1580, Oct 31 at 0259 UT, ``God Save the Queen`` on organ, but fade-down for KFCS ID as expected from Colorado Springs CO, the usual dominatrix now, not unwilling to run 10 kW day power at night (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1590, Oct 31 at 0307 UT, sounds like Bollywood music, and peaking about 40 degrees, almost northeast as befitting WCGO Evanston IL. Still same at 0322 UT and have not heard any announcements. With very heavy QRM and multi-SAHs, since there are five dozen mostly low-power US stations at night on 1590, but this is slightly dominant. 0333 to a Hallowe`en tune in Bollywood style with banshee.

It`s time to go back online instead of onradio, so I hasten to bring up the WCGO webstream, and hear more similar music, but now there is a lot of chatter between W&M, in Hinglish? Or Engjabi? with tune dedications. For the show at 10 pm to Midnite CT Sundays is: `Sohni Dharti Radio`. No info about it on WCGO`s own site, but searching separately finds this from a blog stalled since 2012:

``Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Sophia Sohail and I am a Radio Jocky doing shows every sunday night on wcgo 1590 am channel as well as a writer. I write articles in our community newspaper. When people of my community listen to my talk shows on the radio, they call me Oprah of our indopak community``. So Punjabi is more likely (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** URUGUAY. 28435-USB, Oct 30 at 2236, CK2DK with contest contacts. QRZ.com shows: ``CX2DK Uruguay, flag Uruguay, MARCELO FERNANDO EGÜES MARTORELL, PO Box: 37, P.C: 11000, Montevideo - Uruguay`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search starts a bit late today as I wake up just before local sunrise at 1254 UT:
702-WSW at 1251
612-WSW at 1252
657-WSW at 1253
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 870, Oct 30 at 2250 UT, country gospel music, ID as ``Top Ten Radio`` (I think), with WWL nulled but losing out to it by 2252 UT. Prime suspect looks like 25 kW KPRM Park Rapids, MN. Do they use such a slogan, or program name? Or maybe KAAN in Bethany MO (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1590, Oct 30 at 0307 UT as I am rotating the DX-398 to peak/null presumed WCGO IL, something appears briefly in the null, ``Your shopping mall on the radio, KGAD``, or fuzzily similar calls. KDAV Lubbock TX would be closest, supposedly oldies, and maybe silent? Or KVGB Great Bend KS? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4915.068, Oct 31 at 1305, JBA carrier notable for being considerably off-frequency unlike many such still on the 60m band shortly after sunrise, corresponding mostly to India/Tibet/China channels, but NO Asians are listed on 4915, just two Brazilians, impossible now. Possibly something local, but have not noticed it before. Or an All India Radio way off-frequency, which they are quite prone to do (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs October 30, 2016

** CANADA. 7850-CUSB, Oct 30 at 0633, absolutely no signal from CHU, demonstrating how low the MUF has sunk, but still in well on 3330-CUSB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 7435, Oct 30 at 1320, R. Martí, W&M conversation clear of jamming on new Greenville frequency, while jamming remains on ex-7405 and ex-9805, while the second RM frequency is really now 11930 with some lite pulse jamming but not yet wall-of-noise. Also WON jamming on 13605 at 1331 check, which will soon be replaced, as every winter, by 13820, clear except for a JBA carrier, presumably Iran, Arabic at 0830-1430, and NOT ``Moskva`` in Russian as imaginatively registered at 0800-1600. RM 13820 span is 14-20 UT, and might also clash with Egypt in Urdu at 16-18. The incompetent DentroCuban Jamming Command is always slow to catch up to non-secret seasonal changes. But then Arnie would have to admit to consulting HFCC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA [and non]. 9865, Oct 30 at 1318, AIR VBS with Indian pop music, S2-S4 but after many years, FINALLY clear of ChiCom CCI, which stays on 9870, CRI English, 13-16, 500 kW, 200 degrees from Xi`an toward India. AIR frequency management is finally doing its job (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 9400, Oct 30 at 1314, Denge Kurdistane is back on its B-season frequency, ex-11600. Unexpectedly good for starters, and surprisingly, no CCI from FEBC Philippines like last winter --- maybe because FE propagation is so degraded today? That`s still registered at 10-14 in Chinese, 100 kW, 330 degrees from Iba. Some ACI from 9395-WRMI. At 1337 still good and clear at S9+10; 1358 check music, 1403 ID and Kurdish talk. By 1440 recheck, declined to S5-S8 but still QRM-free. Ivo Ivanov shows site change at 1400 from PRIDNESTROVYE to BULGARIA.

HFCC B-16 shows these sites for some BRB client on 9400: 04-08 & 12-20 PRIDNESTROVYE. 08-12 ARMENIA. Also something ``New`` for SPC BULGARIA in ``English`` at 0200-2359! This is quite contradicted by Ivo Ivanov`s better-informed lineup:

``From Oct 30 11600 will be changed to new 9400 as follows
0400-0800 on 9400 KCH 300 kW / 130 deg WeAs Kurdish [PRIDNESTROVYE]
0800-1200 on 9400 ERV 300 kW / 192 deg WeAs Kurdish [ARMENIA]
1200-1400 on 9400 KCH 300 kW / 130 deg WeAs Kurdish [PRIDNESTROVYE]
1400-1700 on 9400 SOF 100 kW / 090 deg WeAs Kurdish [BULGARIA]
1700-2000 on 9400 ISS 250 kW / 090 deg WeAs Kurdish [FRANCE]
2000-2200 on 9400 KCH 300 kW / 116 deg WeAs Kurdish`` [PRIDNESTROVYE]
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 11610, Oct 30 at 1119, very poor signal from algo, presumed RNZI on brand NF toward NNW rather than NNE. Per B-16 HFCC there is now a 2-hour break in ChiCom usage of 11610, just right for RNZI at 11-13.

9700, Oct 30 at 1305, RNZI on reactivated summer channel, ex-6170; S5-S8 with Pacific news starting with human rights in Fiji; some splatter from 9710 CUBA, diminished by LSB tuning. Hope 9700 will improve once propagation disturbance be over (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 9610, Oct 30 at 1309, language lessons with phrases repeated, 1312 ID ``Saut Romani``, so RRI as now scheduled 1300-1330 in Arabic, 300 kW, 142 degrees from Tsiganeshti. Wonder if it`s long-path, as Europe by short is not to be expected at this time. Also happen across another Arabic frequency just before 1327* with IS, 11945, which is 300 kW, 140 degrees from Galbeni. Then at 1329, the B-B-C- chimes are JBA, which is SINGAPORE about to open Myanmarianese (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [non non]. 7315, Oct 30 at 0637, Brother Scare via WHRI running roughly a minute behind 7570 WRMI, talking about his sub-tabernacle in Henryetta OK (due S of Tulsa, due E of OKC). Believe this replace 7355 which is no longer registered at this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 12035, Oct 30 at 1327, no signal yet from VOT on winter English frequency, ex-15450 at 1230; 1329, now S3 with VOT IS, 1330 accurate timesignal, but far too weak, despite 500 kW, at 310 degrees toward UK and US. Yet ROMANIA has managed to put a good signal into here on 11945 with its IS until 1327*, and that`s 300 kW, 140 degrees in Arabic! Long path? (also 9610, see ROMANIA) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7780, Oct 30 at 0629, the PCJ Radio International special,  `From the Archives of Radio Nederland` #4, supposed to be all about Eddie Startz this month, is NOT airing at scheduled time of 0600-0800 on WRMI 7780 to Europe. Instead I am hearing some familiar `World Music` default fill, African percussion & chanting, 0632 on to another tune. Still music at 0701 final check. This is S9+10, but off side of beam as always much weaker here than BS on 7570 to NW at S9+50, and 7730 to WNW at S9+30. I suppose there will be another try to make good a week later. Meanwhile, will the scheduled repeat to North America, UT Monday October 31 at 0100-0300 on 7570, transpire? (frequency which Keith mis-spoke on MN+ at ``7750``) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11580, Sunday Oct 30 at 1441, preaching other than TOM on WRMI-1, since `Worship in your Home` is on sked grid as Sundays only 1300-1500, but doesn`t show what occurs rest of week, which as we hear, is really World Music during the 14-15 hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5810, Oct 30 at 1335, WEWN Spanish is still on and JBA carrier on 15610 must be WEWN English; but neither 11550 nor 12050 is on with Spanish. WEWN has yet to put up a B-16 sked but A-16:
shows both 25m frequencies during this hour, and 5810 finishing at 0500! HFCC B-16 shows 11550 totally abandoned by WEWN, 12050 starting at 1400; AND: 5810 greatly expanded to a 00-14 UT span. But only two of any three scheduled frequencies are funxioning until and unless the third transmitter be fixed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ZAMBIA. 13680, Oct 30 at 1332, Voice of Hope - Africa with scheduled Swing music show as bait for evangelism, only S2. Is such music really attractive to an African audience? At least the show gets back on SW with KVOH 9975 still silent (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Marconi Radio International on air on 31 October 2016 with a Special Halloween Broadcast

Greetings from Italy!

Please be advised that our weekly Tuesday transmission will be replaced in the week from 31 October to 6 November by a special Halloween brodcast.  This means that Marconi Radio International will once again be on air tomorrow, Monday, 31 October 2016, as follows:  17.00-22.00 UTC on 7700 kHz (USB Mode) with 100 watts.

To celebrate  Halloween, we’ll air  a special 45 minute show, with  a number of rock songs, from punk to power metal,  with the word "Halloween" in their title.

As always, this 5 hour broadcast will also include our weekly DX shows  "Italian Shortwave Panorama" (in English)  "Panorama Onde Corte" (in Italian), and "Borderline" (a music show in Italian of lesser   known  (or played on the radio) singers and bands.
MRI encourages reception reports from listeners. Audio clips (mp3-file) of our broadcasts are welcome! We QSL 100%. Our electronic mail address is: marconiradiointernational (at) gmail.com

Please don’t forget to include your postal address as some lucky listeners will also receive a fresh off the press QSL card which can be seen on our Facebook page  at this web-address: https://www.facebook.com/mriworld

Last but not least, we need your help! If you are  a DX blogger, or use social networks, please post an announcement on your own blog and/or Facebook or send out a tweet the day before the broadcast. You can also forward this message to a friend. This should help increase our potential audience.

We hope to hear from a lot of shortwave listeners about our transmissions.

Glenn Hauser logs October 29-30, 2016

** ALBANIA. 7474.97, Oct 30 at 0038, JBA carrier, presumed R. Tirana as now scheduled for B-16 in daily Albanian hour to North America. Propagation from Europe is much degraded tonight, on 9, 7 and even 6 MHz bands. English should be at 0230 on same except UT Mondays, so we can`t check that until UT Tuesday. Drita Çiço says new 7475 had a very good signal at 0003 Oct 30, via groundwave into the R. Tirana monitoring center. Also, there have been some reports from listeners about earlier broadcasts Oct 29 and 30 that the modulation had greatly improved; let`s hope for good (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 5025, Oct 30 at 0015, R. Rebelde is dead air again, S9+25, suffering splatter from 5050 WWRB (not 5040 RHC as I first suspected, which is nominal). By 0116 Rebelde seems off, and I have an S6 carrier about 5024.99, Quillabamba, Perú? By 0138 this is just barely modulated, so I compare it to 1180 Rebelde, and no match. However, there are really two slightly offset carriers around 5025, so RR may still be on at much reduced power. I might have blamed poor propagation, were 5040 RHC not still inbooming, unlike on higher bands (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 7365, Oct 30 at 0107, R. Martí with WS béisbol, like last night better here and with much less jamming than on // 6030. If there are further games in the sequence, note that for B-16, 7365 is HFCC-registered at 01-02 UT only, preceded and followed by new 7435 at 23-01 and 02-07! Also 12-14. And no more 7335. Not clear why, but there is no provision in these regs for one-hour DST shifts caused by the Week of Confusion.

Strangely, but not surprisingly, I find no promotion at http://www.martinoticias.com
that they are broadcasting the so-called Serie Mundial! Keeping below the radar? I wonder if they really have two announcers at the games, or only working off Fox TV? Continuous crowd noise behind them could be just SFX. No full program schedule, but Martí does provide a display of current and immediately upcoming shows, which I did not check in time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9865, Oct 30 at 0111, JBA carrier, presumed AIR VBS ex-9870 as registered for B-16 at 0010-0435, 0845-1200, 1230-1740, 500 kW, 35 degrees from Bengaluru --- and finally after years and years, edging away from the collision with CHINA still on 9870. We hope for better propagation now and without CCCCI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ITALY [non]. 7730, UT Sunday 0ct 30 at 0030 via WRMI, 17-note ID signal a few times on piano, IBC sign-on in Italian and English, IBC@Europe.com or see http://www.ibcradio.web.com. 0032 starting weekly ham DX news report, `DX-Italia``, in Italian. 0053 recheck, now some SWBC logs, such as KTWR. Liners in English, but program mostly in Italian. 0055 into ``IBC Digital``, SSTV-sounding beeps. Is also on WRMI scheduled UT Sat 0130 on 11580 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NETHERLANDS [non]. 6145, UT Sunday Oct 30 at 0048, JBA carrier; can this be The Mighty KBC via GERMANY as scheduled? I first figured they were AWOL, perhaps leaving India uncovered, but European propagation is terrible tonight. (CRI Albania 6020 is only S4-S6 at 0106). Still little or nothing on 6145 at 0104. Sometimes this is one hour, sometimes two hours, and we are right at A/B-16 transition time so there could be time confusion or an unexpected new frequency? B-16 HFCC shows MBR Nauen still registered Sundays only on 6145 at 00-01 and 02-03 (but not 01-02!).

In his publicity for Radiograms, Kim Elliott thought KBC would still be on this week: ``The Mighty KBC will transmit to North America Sunday 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 pm EDT) on 6145 kHz, via Germany. A minute of MFSK32 will be at about 0130 UTC. KBC will also transmit to Europe Sunday, 30 October, at 1200-1300 UTC, on 6095 kHz. A minute of MFSK32 will be at about 1230 UTC. Reports to Eric: themightykbc (at) gmail.com`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 17675, Oct 30 at 0019, RNZI has reactivated here for B-16, ex-15720 (which is still used shoulderly), only S2, while Australia 17840 is S4, neither really sufficient under circumstances (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6955.0-USB, Oct 30 at 0045, pirate at S7 with blues/soul music. 0055 now up to S9 with cowboy song; 0059 seems there is also a wobbly reduced carrier, or is it just music bed? No ID past 0100, but at 0105, ``You are tuned to Back Country Radio`` with overlapping echoes, then another voice deliberately distorted so I can`t understand it giving a .com web address. 0132 check, now it`s off. No other pirates heard during this sesquihour; presumably there will be a lot more of them the next night or two for Hallowe`en.

Then I check
and find everyone logging it there took it as Bat Country Radio, also CW ID as KBAT, so I must defer to that. (BTW, the area around Freedom OK, Alabaster Cavern is bat country) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 30 at 0102, JBA carrier from R. Chaski, until autocutoff at 0103:12*, which is 8 seconds later than last night, but my timing then may have been one second off; so compare to previous log, Oct 25 until 0102:39.5*, five nights ago, and 32.5 seconds earlier for an average of 6.5 seconds each, more like it (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND. 15589.95, Oct 30 at 0020, very poor in English, so HSK9 has not yet made B-16 switch to 13745 for so-called North American service. RHC is still on 13740 tonight, but barely with degraded propagation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 6080, Oct 30 at 0402, JBA carrier from presumed VOT on new B-16 frequency for English to N America --- but propagation is horrible tonight, so even moving two bands down from 9515 is not enough. At 0300, K index was 4, amid G-1 geomagnetic storms.

Oh2, in A-16, VOA English via SAO TOME was on 6080 during this hour and audible here --- and it is STILL registered on 6080 for B-16, as well as the late change by Turkey! So 6080 was not such a great choice after all for TRT. A quick look at HFCC as of Oct 28 shows 6075 would be open that hour (tho CFRX 6070 might be bothered, and HFCC boycotter CUBA might be planning to go back on 6075; but Turkey could beat them to it; if still on 6080, Cuba 6075 would then be an ACI problem). (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15220 // 11720, Saturday Oct 29 at 1959, having heard VOA Kriyol yesterday, I`m checking again, and indeed Greenville is signing on, but 2000 news in English, 2005 VOA One ID and pop music in English, 2009 DJ Larry London who acts as if he likes this stuff ---- and not a mot of kriyòl to 2030 cut-off tune in progress for YDD sign-off. 15220 has been a solid S9+10 while 11720 faded between S9 and S7. BTW, these do NOT appear in HFCC A-16 or B-16 as of October 28. Perhaps there is no Creole programming produced on weekends, but they keep the transmitters running anyway? It would be more helpful to the Haitians to duplicate VOA in real French at the same hour on 15730 & 17530, but receptionwise, hardly necessary as those two from Greenville to Africa likely boom into Haiti as well. Then I find this note from a John:

``Glenn, I'm in Central Florida and I've noted the VOA in Creole between 2000 and 2030 Monday-Friday for the last week and a half, with English broadcasts on Saturday and Sunday. Frequencies remain 11720 and 15220 kHz. Signals are always very strong here, S9 +50 on 11720, S9 +10 on 15220 kHz. I don't know how long these transmissions will continue for. My regards, John`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1849 monitoring. Altho I could not hear it via UTwente, Alan Gale in UK confirms the Sat Oct 29 1431 UT broadcast was audible there on 7265-CUSB, apparently skipping over the SDR in Holland. Ivo Ivanov in Bulgaria also confirms the Sat Oct 29 at 0631 UT broadcast on 6190-CUSB. Confirmed here the Sat 2230 broadcast on WBCQ 9330.007v-CUSB. Also confirmed UT Sunday October 30 at 0327 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, 6 minutes in, so started circa 0321; S9+20 and no LSB QRM, as a big contest congesting 40m apparently is off-limits to 160. Next:

** U S A. 5130.07, UT Sunday Oct 30 at 0017, Area 51 via WBCQ is starting to play the original ``War of the Worlds`` classic. Sufficient now, but fading weaker later in the hour. From the site which http://worldmicroscope.com forwards to now:

``On-air, Halloween weekend 2016 --- Area 51 is on WBCQ 5.130 MHz and http://www.splatterbox.us:5110

** U S A. 9930, Sat Oct 29 at 1823, theatre organ music on WTWW-2. Must be that new show we had been hearing UT Sundays after 0100 on 5085. Yes, announcement says it`s Theatre Organ of the Ozarx, address in Pleasant Hill MO, but music this week is from an instrument in Belleville IL, 300 miles away. First of all, Pleasant Hill is just south of Kansas City, not exactly in the Ozarx! Second of all, the distance between them is only 232 statute miles crowly, or 261 miles drively. Says a second time has been added, Sat 1 pm [CT] on 9930; but runs until 1835 WTWW ID, so must have started late circa 1806 UT. Super-strong but a shame that the great organ music be marred by WTWW modulation rather distorted, plus some selective fading distortion (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5025-5070 approx., Oct 30 at 0015, range of splatter out of 5050 WWRB, bothering 5040 RHC and heard on 5025 against the Rebelde carrier. At 0135, I notice 5050 bears crosstalk from a different speaker, somewhat softer underneath, re something she did in 1992 and 1993 --- I bet it`s about Hillary. 0144 still two audios mixing, the  underone louder than before. The overone IDs as `Heart & Soul of America Broadcast`, Centreville VA, offers anti-Semitic DVD. Way to go, Dave! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5810, Oct 30 at 0051, no signal from WEWN, which is registered to start at 0000 both in A-16 and B-16; 11520 has a JBA carrier, and 11870 also missing. But at 0109, now 5810 is on and inbooming at S9+20 with Rosary in Spanish (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 7315, Oct 30 at 0041, V. of Vietnam is still here via WHRI, in stilted Spanish, with QRM --- or rather voice-under remaining during translation, a no-no on SW. Only S8. If still going Oct 31, we may start to assume VOV relay be prolonged into B-16, including English at 0000 and/or 0100 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1650, Oct 30 at 0112 UT, still can`t pull any sign of ``SAC`` beacon which DXers further east and south are getting, thought to be on an oil platform in the NE Gulf of Mexico. Even by narrow bandwidth, BFO in both sidebands of the 1650 broadcasters (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs October 29, 2016

** CUBA [and non]. 9955, Oct 29 at 0619, pulse jamming is running despite WRMI programming now nothing but BS; both weak at about equal levels (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY. 6190, Oct 29 at 0620, NO signal from Hamburger Lokalradio, or anything. Tho at 1 kW certainly intended only for Europe, I`ve long been desirous of picking up this longtime WORLD OF RADIO  affiliate directly. WOR coming up at 0630 after Switzerland in Sound. Today was my best chance propagationally before the time shift next week to one hour later, WOR at 0730. In B-16, co-channel QRM will also resume from BBC via South Africa until 0800, which we hope will have faded out in Europe by 0730.

7265, Oct 29 at 1414, via UTwente SDR, NO signal from HLR other frequency either, so suspected not on, during Media Network Plus, nor at further chex before 1500 for WORLD OF RADIO at 1431 (which from next week will be at 1531, and once again colliding with CRI English via Kashgar, East Turkistan at 1400-1600, 174 degrees for S Asia, but in winter also a blocker for HLR in Europe.) Now there is ACI from 7270 and also something on 7260 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 6170, Oct 29 at 1358, RNZI is still on A-16 frequency, while its replacement from tomorrow, 9700 is vacant except for heavy splash from 9710 CUBA, which might then be a problem (Glenn  Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** UGANDA [non]. 15240, Sat Oct 29 at 1608, since I have UTwente SDR up, check for R. Munansi via WWRB: yes, hilife music but very poor. Then checking 15240 on my own receiver at 1609: same music and merely poor. Presumably will get down to anti-Muséveni business by 1700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ZAMBIA [and non]. 13680, Saturday Oct 29 at 1356, stray Cuban pulse jammer at the rate of 80/minute, unlike the wall of noise against 13605 Radio Martí (which tomorrow at 14-20 makes usual B-season switch to 13820, why? How long will it take the DCJC to catch up with it?).

I`m seeking Voice of Hope - Africa as scheduled weekends only at 12-17 UT, but which achieved a good signal here only once in early October, long-path? There is now a VP signal under the jamming, maybe this. Should be jazz or swing music show.

Since I have the UTwente SDR up to try to hear 7265 HLR with WOR (not), I then employ it on 13680. At 1415 Oct 29, yes, talk in English about missionaring in Africa. But at 1440 recheck strong signal in Farsi, which, as soon IDed, is NHK, listed as FRANCE relay at 1430-1500. Zambia can barely be heard underneath it. At 1500, ``Amazing Grace`` is mixing with NHK timesignal and CRI theme, which continues but much weaker than NHK was, allowing Voice of Hope ID also to be copied. By 1508, CRI in Chinese via Kashgar is about equal level to VOH-A. Also considerable ACI from 13675 which is ChiCom jamming vs RFA Chinese via Tajikistan at 15-17. 13685 is also listed for CRI English via Mali.

What`s going to happen from tomorrow with B-16 schedules? I thought someone from Voice of Hope was at HFCC Miami in August, yet currently there are NO HFCC registrations from VOH Lusaka/Zambia! Just KVOH 17775 and imaginary 9975. If they do plan to keep on 13680, what will they encounter from stations which did register? Nothing on 13680 except 0450-0550 Iran in Swahili. Nothing on 13675 during VOH-A hours. On 13685 will still be CRI Mali, and at 1330-1430 Turkey in Uighur. Looks like it`s safe to keep 13680. And how about 11680 if they stay there for the 05-08 UT broadcast on weekdays? Nothing else listed, and adjacently, only 11685, CNR in Tibetan from Beijing, should not be a problem. How about 9680, the other VOH-A frequency? Only competing Christian broadcaster KNLS Alaska has registered it at 07-08 and three later hours. Of course anything concerning Taiwan and the consequent radio war with China is banned from HFCC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Glenn Hauser logs October 27-28-29, 2016

** BRAZIL. 5035, Oct 29 at 0107, very poor signal with Doppler flutter, presumably R. Aparecida, normally masked by splash from 5040 RHC, which is off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 9818.87, Oct 29 at 0039, very poor S4-S5 carrier, no doubt R. Nove de Julho, always off-frequency below 9820, and sometimes even below 9819 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 2598-USB, Oct 29 at 0054 UT, robot YL with weather in English, S6; 2749-USB, Oct 29 at 0055 UT, robot YL with weather in French, S5. Still in well on MF despite depressed northerly MUF on HF.

Rich Ray`s compilation for the DXLD yg from Canadian Coast Guard shows these are, with start times:
0040 UT 2749 VCO Sydney via Port Caledonia NS 46 11 14 -59 53 59
0048 UT 2598 VCP Placentia via St Lawrence NL 46 55 06 -55 22 45
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 5040, Oct 29 at 0107, RHC is OFF, allowing a JBA carrier here, maybe INDIA? 5025, Oct 29 at 0107, R. Rebelde is on at S9+35, but dead air! Way to go, RadioCuba! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [and non]. 7365, Oct 29 at 0048, R. Martí, with béisbol game, mentions American League, Cleveland, player Tyler Naquin (sp?). Therefore I am confident that the only silly BB game that might be broadcasting now would be the North American Sequence. I figured RM would be carrying it (but nostation in English) since Rick Wald wondered if the ``World Series`` could be heard anywhere on SW. Jamming quite lite now on 7365, but heavy on // 6030. Wonder if the DentroCuban Jamming Command relented a bit for the occasion? Rick laments that at his location in BC, 6030 is blocked by Calgary comedy station CKMX via CFVP! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA. 9690, Oct 28 at 1327, AIR with S Asian music, but not their enchanting interval signal, S4-S6. Pause about a semi-minute and 1330:10 signing on the GOS in English; clear, no QRM, but only S4-S6 and also on // 13710 at S3-S5, 1331 into news. Still nothing on onetime third frequency 11620 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR. 17640, Oct 27 at 1840, MWV still AWOL. Wolfgang Büschel checked all the broadcasts this evening, and heard none of them, nor Russian on 9570 after 1800.

17640, Oct 28 at 1829, 17640 still missing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO [and non]. 650, Oct 28 at 1245, adstring in Spanish, finally 1247 Grupo Chávez plug, which means XETNT Los Mochis, Sinaloa, 6:47 timecheck, and then ``Altavoz Informa`` which is their morning news block; vs. KGAB Cheyenne WY on day power, mutually nullable (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Oct 29 at 0100, JBA carrier from R. Chaski, until autocutoff at 0103:04*, which is 24.5 seconds later than last check 4 nights before, Oct 25 until 0102:39.5*, averaging 6.1 seconds later per (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15220 // 11720, Friday Oct 28 at 2005, VOA Kriyòl is back! I don`t bandscan every day at this time, and assumed it was staying off since Kim Elliott told us its final day was Oct 14. Has it been back since then, or M-F only? Or ad-hoc, maybe on, maybe not? The two frequencies are synchronized from Greenville, presumably again at 2000-2030 UT only (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1849 monitoring: confirmed Thu Oct 27 at 2130 on WRMI, 13695, very good; also confirmed Thu Oct 27 after 2330 on WBCQ 9330v-CUSB; also confirmed Fri Oct 28 at 2330 on WBCQ, 9329.986v-CUSB, S9. Next:

We also welcome a new WORLD OF RADIO affiliate, a webcasting station from Poland, Radio DHT, with Dance, Hands-up and Trance music, but Patryk Faliszewski has invited WOR to be heard as well, Saturdays and Sundays at approx. 12:10 pm Polish time, which means Oct 29 at 1010 UT, and from Oct 30 onwards, at 1110 UT. You may also enjoy the music even if you don`t speak Polish. ``We are a small, yet developing internet station broadcasting mainly 90's Eurodance, Eurobeat, and at late hours U.T, the Hands-up and trance music``. Patryk says most of the staff is totally or partially blind. Details (in Polish) and audio link at
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7490, 5130 & 3250, UT Sat Oct 29 at 0010, WBCQ with `Allan Weiner Worldwide`, trimulcasting in disturbed auroral conditions, which weakens 7490 here, makes delayed // 5130.08 unusually better at S9+25. Says 3250 is also on air, but at first all I can perceive is a JBA carrier circa 3250.3. By 0028, 5130 is fading down too, S7. By 0056, 3250 modulation is detectable // 7490. 0112 recheck, now some program info, but copy is getting difficult on any frequency. Charlie Prince show in German will be on a week from tomorrow, Sat 9 pm ET on 9330 [UT Nov 6 when DST will still be in effect, so = 01 UT Sunday]. Carol Babaloo (?) will be a 3-hour extravagaza music show, episode 1, Sunday Nov 20 at 3-6 pm EST on 5130 (20-23 UT). Dead Frog Radio will be once a month, I think he said.

In promoting his fund drive, Allan asserts that he would like to see some liberal / leftwing/ progressive programming on WBCQ, but none such wants to appear. Maybe the fundraiser will allow something like that to be underwritten. At 0123, 7490 has recovered to S9+10 for his benedixion, piously calling upon God to intervene in the elexion and ``bring us a good president`` which he says we have not really had in his lifetime. Allan, of course, is backing Trump, no matter what. Says his absentee ballot is on hand, waiting until just before he departs for winter in Florida, before elexion day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11870, Oct 28 at 0621, one WEWN transmitter is still missing. 13830, Oct 28 at 2007, now this one is AWOL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9275, Thu Oct 28 at 1840, WMLK is on with DEJOM; but Fri Oct 29 at 1829, no signal (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9917.12 & 9942.90, Oct 28 at 2010 during presumed Dave Ramsey Show on 9930v WTWW-2, also approx. plus/minus 12.9 kHz spurs out of it just like it spews around 5085 at night. Maybe a trace of modulation on the upper one (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1480, Oct 28 at 1305 UT, KBXD Dallas with ad for that jeweler in Frisco and something in another Metroplex suburb, IDs in passing as Radio Salam, M&W hosts in Hinglish; 1307 UT traffic report of necessity mostly in English; with usual slow SAH vs KQAM Wichita (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** YEMEN [non]. 11860, Oct 28 at 1319, Republic of Yemen Radio, is good at S9 in Arabic, surely long-path as hi-latitude signals are quite poor by comparison, i.e. China, Japan (but further south Tinian & Saipan on 12110 & 12140 are better). By 1433, 11860 is S9 plus 10 to 20. I keep listening in case there be a Qur`anic vesper break. No, but mostly music 1433 past 1500, including ``triumphal`` theme segments they play every day (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search October 28, UT:
702-WSW at 1233, two carriers beating
774-WSW at 1233
1098-W at 1238

576-, at 1235, 1241, somewhat NW but hard to peak, and it`s a bit off-frequency to lo side, so suspect this is really something local. However, not hearing it later during full daytime. (I am still hearing the 594+ spur of 1640-KZLS.) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1590, Oct 29 at 0026 UT, I`m checking for the S Asian music John Reed in Shawnee OK had reported to NRC DX News a couple weeks ago which he concluded came from KLIV, way out in San José, California. Doubtful to me, so I researched that and concluded it was most likely WCGO Evanston IL. Here`s his report and what I wrote in reply:

``1590, KLIV, CA, San José – 10/14 2130 [EDT = 0130 UT Oct 15] – After listening to this station occasionally over a span of several years, but hearing no ID I finally IDed it. The broadcast is in Hindi language with a few English words and pop Hindi music. Snooping around on the internet turned up KLIV as broadcasting Hindi and Bollywood music. That’s it!`` (John Reed, Shawnee, OK, Brigantina (USSR-made in the 1990s); NRD-525; AOR AR-7030; Homebrew tuned ferrite loops, Clifton Labs active whip, phaser, Domestic DX Digest-West, NRC DX News Oct 31 via DXLD)

```! KLIV is 5/5 kW, and October FCC sunset is 0130 UT. NRC Pattern Book shows both night and day patterns are circle northwest into the Pacific. Should not be putting any signal toward us. But FCC AM Query says it`s NON-direxional daytime, so John may have got it just at switch time (November: 0100 UT). I`ll have to look for it! But his ID is apparently based on format, not ID --- could it be anything closer?
WCGO Evanston IL, 10/2.5 kW U2 is partly ETHnic. Nothing else around here could fit unless another radical change, but he`s been getting this for years.
NRC AM Log 2016-2017 shows KLIV as C&W, 24-hour ``Country Gold 1590``, but could have flipped since August? Radio-locator.com still has KLIV as Country Gold with different patterns day and night, but not that different, with some signal still to the east.
From Own website:
``Welcome to 1590 KLIV – San Jose’s Country Gold. Your destination for country music from the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. You might be looking for what was once Silicon Valley’s New[s] Station. On June 10, 2016 KLIV sent out its last news broadcast. So why Country Gold, and why just this era? These were the best years for country radio, with the introduction of amazing artists like Garth Brooks, Reba, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood, Tim McGraw, and Martina McBride. We’d like to bring you these artists, and many more, right here on 1590 KLIV Country Gold``
So there was a recent format flip, but certainly not to Bollywood. And it took no more than 5 seconds of listening to
at 0343 UT October 28 to tell that it`s country, not Bollywood.
So where on the internet did John find KLIV to be Hindi and Bollywood? Long outdated info, or from the future?
Now let`s check out WCGO Evanston IL
It`s mostly talk, but some shows look like they are not in English. His log was Friday at 8:30 pm CDT, so on the sked M-F is:
7 pm - 11 pm Night Star Radio Joe Rasho.
I bring up stream at 0355 UT Oct 28, just before the show is to end:
and yes, non-English announcement, and S Asian? music. 0359 UT closing announcement unseems Hindi, but more like Hebrew? They do have a number of Jewish programs. No, but close: searching on Joe Rasho WCGO reveals it`s one of their ASSYRIAN programs:
or just
I think John must have been getting WCGO instead. It`s N-D day, but night pattern is supposed to go NNE, no good for us. Likely another one running day pattern at night, at least when we could hear it. I`ll be trying to hear it; if he or I can, getting a DF fix on it should confirm whether it could be WCGO, and not KLIV.
I`m glad I was led to WCGO since I see they also have a Milt Rosenberg page, ex-WGN, which says
``MILT IS CURRENTLY TAKING A BREAK FROM HIS LIVD [sic] RADIO PROGRAM. DOWNLOAD HIS SHOW PODCASTS TO KEEP YOUR BRAIN IN SHAPE! Podcast Feed: http://feedpress.me/milt-rosenberg ``
You may skip the anti-Obama ones```
Now at 0026 UT Oct 29 there is heavy CCI on 1590, but looping NE seems to be some ME or S Asian music and non-English talk in the mix. Unfortunately, logistically, I can`t DX and check webcasts simultaneously. Competition at first is ESE/WNW English call-in for Biblical advice, unsure whence, gone after 0030 UT, sunset? That was nullable, but still too much QRM to pull anything from WCGO(?). Will need to be on ND day pattern to have a chance here. At 0043 UT I`m getting something else in English, probably NNW, KVGB in KS. I keep nulling that and aiming toward Chicago, undivided attention to 1590 from 0058 UT to 0102 UT, but nothing surfaces above the pileup. Conditions might have been auroral, but no, Chicago 1690, 780 and 670 are in just fine at 0028 UT check.
WCGO would legally be on ND day pattern only until 2315 UT in October, 2230 UT in November. That`s before the Assyrian program on weekdays, altho on Saturdays there are several of them all afternoon as late as 7 pm CT. A.k.a. Neo-Aramaic:
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
UNIDENTIFIED. 1650, Oct 29 at 0010 UT and several more chex the following hour+, no signal from beacon SAC, which was being reported last night, first by Tim Tromp in Michigan. Speculation was that SAC was another test from a beacon manufacturer in Beaumont TX, which was heard a few years ago on 320 and 325 kHz, but if this is a harmonic, the fundamental would have to be 330 instead. (Not heard here on 330 either.) Les Rayburn in AL was getting it from the southeast, called the company and they said it`s not them now, but I wonder if one of their units has been installed somewhere in the Gulf or Caribbean, still programmed to emit the temporary test ID of SAC. Oil rigs at sea may well use the X-band fundamentally. Anyhow, all I am hearing are the usual CO and IA 1650 broadcast stations (and precious little from OK`s own KFSW). On Oct 28, Tim Tromp was getting it again as early as 2218 UT, as was Mark Pettifor in Indiana at 2245 UT. For them it was roughly southward. And this just in on the NRC-AM list:
``1650, SAC beacon. Per tips on NRC/IRCA lists reporting this one, I have it here (just W of Gainesville, FL) at 0150-0215+ UT with CW. Signal is fair to very good, equal to and at times over co-channel stations, though with some fades. Nulls N of due W, so given Les Rayburn's S-SE bearing from Montgomery, this would seem to indicate a location in the northern Gulf. David Potter, Gainesville, FL, C Crane Skywave barefoot`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
