Glenn Hauser logs October 23-24, 2014

** AUSTRALIA. 6080, 6150, 9475, 9580, 12065, 12085, just as I suspected, R. Australia has totally changed programming this week compared to last Friday, when `Jazz Up Late` was on until 1330, then `Overnight from Classic FM` (classical). Friday Oct 24 at 1225, obviously not jazz but a talk program, with several odd scientific interviews, e.g. about athletic injuries; how high can a skyscraper made of wood go? So far only 10 stories before it collapses, but someone is working on a way to reach 20-30 stories, and adds that wood is *not* so (in)flammable and could even survive a fire better than steel, merely getting charred on the outside.

1241 ID as ``The Naked Scientists on RN`` and now an item about retrieving nasty fat, oil and grease (FOG) from London sewers they are constantly clogging and turning it into a fuel source for --- sewage treatment. At 1258 I can also barely hear it on 5995, echo apart from Shep, rather than Waltzing Matilda. 1259 promo for ``Sound Quality after the news, on RN`` --- the serious music show we used to enjoy. But not on RA any more! At 1305 all cut to rap-crap in progress, obviously back to Triple J network`s `Earthbeat` for the next quadrihour (and again no newsbreak at 1400).

According to this,
http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/nakedscientists/
It`s scheduled Fridays at 10 pm, presumably meaning 10:05, = 1105 UT. And info on this week`s ep:http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/nakedscientists/new-document/5828978

Only by consulting the entire RN PDF program grid do we confirm that `TNS` is just one hour, tho we are hearing it an hour later, maybe on Queensland delayed feed? `The World` TV news audio should have still appeared `live` at 11-12 UT. That`s what RA`s own online program schedule still shows, uncorrected with nothing at 12-13, and Earthbeat after 13 to 17 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BANGLADESH. 15505, Oct 24 at 1359, BB carrier is JBA, trace of IS, and also trace of mistimesignal ending at approx. 1359:54, before Urdu service (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 11745, Oct 24 at 0532, RNA distorted spur // 11780 music is JBA here vs local noise level, but not on 11815, probably obscured by the BS blast of splash from 11825 WRMI. RNA better pay attention to the spurs before they too blast out again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CANADA. 6070.0, CFRX Toronto is back! At least a 5-minute ad-string upon tune-in 2235 UT October 23, starting with Hallowe`en costumes, promos for Marketplace on CBC [television, understood] at 8 pm, and something else at 9, before ``News-Talk 10-10`` ID at 2240 and into Events of the Day. Sufficiently fair signal before RHC will wipe it out at 2300. Tnx to tip from WH2XDE`s Jerry Whitney in NY after 19 UT today.

As Robert Lang, who first heard CFRX at 2200 Oct 23, points out, the ODXA site for CFRB/CFRX,
http://cfrx.webs.com/ now proclaims: ``Status ON. As of 12:30 pm today [EDT = 1630 UT], October 23, 2014, CFRX was put back on the air.`` John Figliozzi found 1 kW CFRX to be an ``S9+ signal up here in New York (near Albany), absolutely burying Cuba at the moment (0154).`` Aoki supposes that RHC 6070 at 23-04 is 250 kW at 315 degrees right across mid-America. When both are audible, you should hear an 8 Hz SAH, as Wolfgang Büschel measured CFRX at 4 Hz below, and RHC 4 Hz above 6070.000.

Looks like ``commercial SW`` is again alive and well. Now to check the CFRB non-RHC-hours program schedule for anything of interest. Instead of all-comedy overnight as previously, now it`s only two hours, 0400-0600 UT M-F, right after Cuba closes:

``HUMBLE & FRED

Beginning on Monday January 21, the funny and irreverent duo "Humble" Howard Glassman and Fred Patterson return to commercial radio with their popular show on NEWSTALK 1010 from midnight to 2AM.

Since October 2011, Humble and Fred have been broadcasting a podcast at
http://humbleandfredradio.com - a daily dose of humour uncut, uncensored, but definitely clever and interesting.

"Howard and Fred are thrilled to be back and look forward to a long and healthy relationship at Astral, said Humble." "Having worked hard at trying to wreck the internet, we are happy to be back for another crack at wrecking radio."

They will also be regular contributors to NEWSTALK 1010's programming throughout the week.``

There`s a lot more variety on the weekends, especially if you`re close enough to get CFRX in the daytime.

Next check of 6070, 0525 UT October 24, during Humble & Fred show, evidently raw as they are getting bleeped, not ``uncensored`` here! Poor but clear, except RHC is splashing upon 6070 from 6060.

Next next check of 6070, at 1257 Oct 24, CFRX is gone again! --- JBA carrier, probably North Korea. Altho it`s an all-day path now from Toronto to Enid, as I recall, the sun is still low enough for some signal to propagate. Did the transmitter crash again or was the latest activity just a test? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 9230, Oct 24 at 1254, CNR1 jammer, fair with flutter. No others OOB found higher in quick cursory bandscan (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. Re: ``A greater anomaly is reported to me by Mike Stone in Arlington Heights IL: ``Hi Glen[n], Radio Havana Cuba at 2130 GMT, 6165 kHz, 10-15-14, English service with Latin Music and talk. Very good S7 signal with Yaesu FT840 and 45 foot longwire``. That`s a completely off-schedule emission both in frequency and in language (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)``

I later asked Mike about this anomaly, and he corrects the time: 2130 was really CDT = 0230 UT, so nothing out of the ordinary. RHC is off the hook on this one (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15370, Oct 24 at 1320, RHC Spanish mentioning that it`s United Nations Day, and then bringing up a UN Radio report about ébola. RHC is really the main SW outlet for UN Radio, which long ago had many hours available via US/VOA transmitters. Why did they ever let that go? We often hear UNR segments on RHC, but apparently at no specific times, so not formal relays which could be put into a reliable schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also CANADA: CFRX

** EGYPT. 9965, Oct 23 at 2250, R. Cairo with tone test at quite a different pitch than the constant whine, fair signal, prior to the English sesquihour to North America. 2300 is the time to get it, as the next one at 0200 on 9315 is usually unusable with little or no modulation or signal.

Per HFCC B-14 as of Oct 26, ERU plans to continue 9965 for English at 2300-2430; while at 0200-0330 four frequencies are listed, presumably only one to be used: 9315, 9720, 9835, 9860! The 2115-2245 English to Europe could be on any one of: 9895, 9900, 11890.

Even more wooden stuff for Spanish: 0045-0200 on 9315, 9720, 9835, 9860, 11670, 11710, 12035, 12070, 12080, 13620, 13855! Pick three like the ones currently attempted: 9315, 11710, 12070. Look at 11670: that would collide with Cuba.

13850 is also on the B-14 schedule to continue at 02-07, Arabic to North America (if not alternate duplicate 9905), and 13850 heard here Oct 24 at 0533 with VG signal but Arabic modulation very distorted favoring the spikes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GOA. 9705-, Oct 23 at 2246, AIR GOS opening English but with squeals which vary with modulation; during a long pause, the squeal stays at a constant pitch. Much like the squeals we hear from WEWN and some other stations, who are clueless how to fix it (by replacing modulation cards) or even that they have such a problem.
B14 HFCC shows AIR plans to continue using this via Panaji:
9705 2230 0045 49,50,54 PAN 250 120 0 157 1234567 261014 290315 D AIR

Wolfgang Büschel measured 30 Hz low on: ``9704.970 IND AIR Goa Panaji English service, 2245-0045 UT, 2347 UT Oct 17`` And also reported the squeal on another GOA off-frequency, 29 Hz low, perhaps same transmitter: ``9809.971, AIR Goa Panaji, 1115-1245 UT in Tamil and Telugu. But audio is annoying, high-pitched squealing tone accompanying the audio. And co-channel QRM of CNR 2nd program too. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 17/18/19/20)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9935, Oct 23 at 2245, ERTOPen is on here in Greek and suffering heavy ACI from the BS on 9930 WTWW; // 9415 which looks to be a permanent change. Maybe avoiding China certain hours on 9420 tho I have never noticed it; Iran already moved its lengthy Arabic broadcast months ago from 9420 to 9510. Nothing at all had been listed on 9415 in Aoki; but Greece on 9415 now causes ACI to 9410 stations such as BBC.

HFCC B-14 public file lacks any listings for Greece, but has China on 9415 at 08-10 & 23-24.

9415 // 9935 ERTOpen still on at 0528 Oct 24 in Greek (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KURDISTAN [non]. 11510, Oct 24 at 1351, wonderful vocal music of the PKK terrorists on V. of Mesopotamia, via PRIDNESTROVYE, and good to very good signal too but marred by some IADs. If you have any 23 MHz propagation during the long hours this is on, try 2 x 11510 = 23020 as heard by Robin Harwood on the Utwente receiver (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1744, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 1300-, Oct 24 at 1405 UT, romantic music in Spanish, 1407 UT ``son las 8 --- con 7`` autotimecheck, from the UT-6 zone; no doubt XEP Ciudad Juárez, still dominant slightly on lo side compared to neighbors, making fast SAH with Tulsa(?), still in more than an hour after sunrise here with its 38 kW day power, second in CiJz only to XEROK 800 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185-, Oct 23 at 2243, soft vocal jazz tune, ``Misty``, slightly on the lo side, as XEPPM is obviously on the air already (and maybe has been all day); next check at 0526 UT Oct 24, it`s off again, instead of sometimes prolonged to 0600v (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NEW ZEALAND. 6170, Friday Oct 24 at 1256 I find that RNZI is again on this frequency early, interview with drumming sounders; don`t know how early, as I was paying attention to RA on 6150 et al. 1258 Adrian Sainsbury announces QSY *to* 6170, where they already are instead of 9700, and Bell Bird IS. 1308 after news, `Dateline Pacific` so Pacificans are still getting something useful while RA has descended into rap-crap for a quadrihour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ROMANIA. 9765, Thu Oct 23 at 2248, RRI with classical music, English announcement, fair. From Oct 26 for B-14, this hour shifts to 2300-2357, on 6015 and 7220 via Galbeni at 285 and 290 degrees; 7395 and 9620 via Tiganeshti at 52 degrees. Here in OK I expect the lower bands not to be an improvement, at least not yet. 7220 will of course hit QRhaM as it spreads beyond Europe. Both it at 6015 are registered as only for CIRAF 27N, not US (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND [and non]. 9390, Oct 24 at 1229, open carrier from R. Thailand, 1230 chimes, military band, anthem? ``Public Relations Department`` opening `Newshour`, W&M alternating with headlines, time check as 7:02 (I think, so this is half an hour delayed?), 1232 ad for major sponsor Bangkok Airways. Fair signal with heavy flutter.

This is the final week for ACI-free reception of Thailand on 9390, as WRMI begins 9395 on Nov 1 for 24 hours a day across North America, while HSK9 plans to stay on 9390 in B-14 for numerous broadcasts including four in English, notably the one we hear best at 1230-1300 altho intended for SE Asia, Australia. The so-called North American service makes its usual move from mostly inaudible 15590 in A-season to 13745 in B-season, English at 0000-0100 & 0200-0230; let us hope, less inaudible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1744 monitoring: on WWRB 3185 webcast, UT Thursday Oct 23 at 0329.5, preacher stops, hum comes up and shortly WOR playback starts with a blast, but stops before the intro finishes. 0330.5 try to start again, OK until abrupt stop at 0333. Then Dave comes on and apologizes for another week without WOR --- says he doesn`t know why this is happening. Computer people checked and said everything was OK. Hymn music, and then back to Tullahoma. Next:

Friday 2130 on WRMI 7570, 15770
Saturday 0630 & 1430 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
UT Sunday 0131 on KVOH 9975
Sunday 1000 on WRMI 5850
Sunday 2300 on WRMI 11580
UT Monday 0259v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB
Tuesday 1100 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 0730 & 1530 on Hamburger Lokalradio 7265-CUSB
[HLR presumed shifted winter time like in B-13 season]
Wednesday 1315 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 2100 on WBCQ 7490v
[US times shift one hour later from Nov 2, except 5850, 7570, 15770]
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1370, Oct 23 at 2258 UT, something looping NW/SE with CCI, 1-800-MYSOLAR ad, just can`t make out any 2259 UT ID before CBS bong and news sounder at 2300 UT. I`m here seeking any trace of KGNO Dodge City KS on SSS, since I can`t hear it on daytime groundwave and suspect it`s off the air. But NRC AM Log doesn`t have CBS on it; the most likely affil in neighboring states would be KJCE Rollingwood TX (Austin market). I`ve been monitoring since 2230 UT during the partial solar eclipse, in case there`s anything of interest. Skywave is in at top end of band, but not really unusual. Clouds cleared for less than a minute, not long enough to set up a projexion for a glimpse of the Moonbite (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1640, Oct 24 at 0542 I find that local KZLS (site really east of Hennessey OK with 1 kW, but direxional SSE/NNW toward OKC/Enid) is totally nullable except for a fast SAH, audiblizing ESPN Radio, obviously the only one on 1640 and at somewhat CCW angle from KZLS, WTNI Biloxi MS. I wonder if they are also on 10 kW day power giving them an additional edge (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1600-1602+, Oct 24 at 1401-1403+ UT, noise blob moving slowly upward across 1600 station, as previously heard in the 1610-1620+ range in the night; so maybe it`s something nearby (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 13560, Oct 24 at 0536, I`m checking the Part 15 frequency for ISM hash like I hear all day, and now I am not, but it`s still inconclusive whether it`s from nearby medical equipment but turned off now, or if from far away, but not propagating in the nightmiddle.

I am however hearing CW beeps on 13560.0 which at first seem at the rate of one per second, but counting them over a minute, there are 63 per, not good for timekeeping. Now, are these local or propagating? No HIFER beacons audible in the area at the moment (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
