Glenn Hauser logs May 21-22-23, 2020

NOTE: storm with high winds up to 80 mph blew thru Enid about 0845 UT May 22; tree limbs down, power brown- and blackouts repeatedly but then stayed on here. When we reawoke after sunrise, found Suddenlink cable and internet out, and must have been widespread. Automated reply by phone said they were working on it, but remained out all day and into next night. One cable box retained last frame from a channel with time label converting to 1402 UT.

Meanwhile, we also found that main direxional rooftop TV antenna was blown down. Later, surprised to find most of the OKC signals 100 km away were still being received from its random position where it landed on the roof! The main SW/MW longwire survived, but not much time for monitoring with other repairs and cleanup to be done.

We were lucky as thousands of other Enidians were without power all day including businesses circa downtown Enid, traffic signals here and there.

https://www.enidnews.com/news/updated-storms-knock-out-power-to-thousands-in-enid-area-damage-trees-structures/article_4259d2e4-9c51-11ea-a362-9fb7d45d9ae5.html

Here at WOR HQ, cable and internet resumed sometime during the night/early morning of Saturday May 23 (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

** ALGERIA [non]. 6125, May 22 at 0529, Qur`an from RTA via FRANCE, no self jamming vs storm noise from Kansas, and no signal on 7295, but:

7295, *0530 May 22 cuts on with open carrier at S9/+10, no beepery here either --- presumed, or could have been a hAM.

9620, May 23 at 0604, Qur`an also JBA tonebeeps, Issoudun-imposed on frequency used this hour only (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. CNR1 jamming survey, May 21 from 1323 tuning down from 13300:

12880, first one found, poor in Chinese;
12820, another here;
12190, poor vs CODAR;
11440, JBA carrier;
11070, JBA carrier;
10960, S6-S9;
10820, S2-S5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6100, May 23 at 0542, RHC English instead S9/+10 of dead air; others remain modulable, 6145, strongest 6060, and weakest 6000, while 5040 is in wrong language this hour, Spanish. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9805, May 23 at 0603, noise jamming here despite OCB on this frequency only at 10-13 UT! Typical incompetence/wastage of the DentroCuban Jamming Command. Altho RM frequency usage is needlessly complex, once set, they stick to it and don`t even try to surprise the jammers by running out-of-schedule (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALI. 15125, May 23 at 1730 S5-S7 African language, Hausa? No, Swahili scheduled from CRI Bamako relay (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6925-USB, May 23 at 0024, quick check of pirate band finds Elvis? here at S6-S8. O, it`s the Roy Orbison tribute from Texas Radio Shortwave. Many more reports here: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,67385.0.html including someone else noting he sounded like Elvis at 0024. Wish I could have heard more of it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 12000-AM, May 23 at 1553, routine bandscan encounters urgent screed from Josiah, usual ``pushing-it`` modulation on new daytime frequency, S7-S8 for anti-Christ pirate Station YHWH. Trace still JBA at 1734 check. Did not seem off-frequency to me, but Harold Frodge, MI, also notes: ``Weak carrier detectable here at 1708 with imaginary level audio. Carrier seems to center about 11999.8`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN [and non]. 12030, 11940, 11670, 9690, May 21 at 1845, all four REE frequencies are on and modulating, in quick UTwente SDR check. 9690 has some heavy ACI, presumably CRI Bulgarian via Kunming on 9695 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2035)

** TURKEY. 9830, May 22 at 2200 & 2226 chex, NO signal from VOT English to us; nor RTTY. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2035 contents: Albania and non, Anguilla and non, Antarctica, Australia, Bangladesh and non, Bougainville and non, Canada, China, Congo, Congo DR, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iran and non, Italy non, Korea North non, Korea South, Madagascar, México, New Zealand, North America and non, Papua New Guinea, Perú, Puerto Rico, Sarawak non, South Carolina non, Spain, Sudan, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkey, USA, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Zanzibar; and the propagation outlook

broadcast, Friday May 22 at 2200 on 9955, very poor weak signal vs
pulse jamming. No better at 2226 check.

Also confirmed UT Sat May 23 at 0130 on WRMIs: after ABF in Spanish and BB ID, poor in storm noise on 5010; VP altho with noise reads S9 on 7780; VG as usual on 5850 aimed thisaway, S9+20/30.

Also barely confirmed Sat May 23 at 1305 & 1325 chex, on WRMI 15770, sounds like my voice but totally unreadable. Slightly better to Bulgaria as Ivo Ivanov reports:

``Weak signal of World of Radio#2035 via WRMI-9, May 23

** U S A. 5130 & 6160, May 22 at 2356 just before `AAAWWW` on WBCQ, no signals yet on these frequencies, but 7490 is VG with FKB preacher mis-wrapping up as usual with plug for his later broadcasts on wrong WINB frequency, ``9625`` instead of 9265, Saturday at 9 pm ET; and on WWRB Sun 8 pm on 3215 --- tho last week they had finally made the summer shift to 5050, as yet unconfirmed here:

[``WWRB, Morrison, Tennessee, 5050, May 17, 0151, EE with religious program from Challenge Ministries International until 0156, ID at 0157 "This is Radio Station WWRB, Manchester, Tennessee", into filler gospel music selection; 44444 (JRC NRD-535D; antenna 45m longwire with 9:1 Unun) (Robert Butterfield, Columbia, MD, USA``), WOR iog]

7490, UT Sat May 23 at 0000, WBCQ starts `AAAWWW` with WTO and interjexions. Good signal on this one direct. Opens about Planet Earth spinning at 1000 mph and hope we don`t fall off. Huh? Isn`t it flat? Discussing the different mikes he and Angela are using. Last Saturday found a puddle of water in the kitchen when a faucet failed in the 54-year-old house. After purchasing various non-standard parts, he fixed it altho hates plumbing. Angela is beautiful tonight, and X-rated briefly, tease tease. Super-station ``crapped out`` a couple days ago (that must have been when I found 9330 AWOL, May 20 at 2218). More below.

Says quadri-casting tonight, also on 6160, 5130, 3265, e-mail reception reports wanted. Belch. Discussing benefits of vegan diet especially with meat prices going up. Avoid ``goo-foods``. Fresh chicken eggs are so much better than store-bought. 0018 interrupted by phone call from someone complaining about calling him. Allan says 78% of Americans are overweight, and 40% of those are obese, a bad situation. Angela starts railing against China for COVID-19; Allan warns not to buy into conspiracy theories.

After a quick pirate-band tune at 0024, I check the other WBCQs at 0025: 6159.93V is on fairly with Iran 6160.00 het for another day or two; 5130 is VP in noise, and 3265 as usual inaudible. 0028 Allan says they have just now completed their 14 days of self-quarantine; but he`s been busy, such as installing a new 200-pound modulation transformer in the 780 AM station. 0031 Freddy calls in while on ``pump duty`` and that`s enough for me. Larry Will lasted a bit longer:

``Glenn, to augment what I anticipate are John Carver's notes about tonight's broadcast of "Allan and Angela Weiner Worldwide" on WBCQ, here are my notes: 5/23, 0000 UT. 3265 poor, 5130 fair/good, 6160 very good, 7490 excellent. Disappointing show, started okay, but quickly devolved into ridiculous politics and covid conspiracy theories, stereotypical right wing bashing, and trump ass-licking. Content was so distasteful that we tuned out about 40 minutes in. Lw`` --- and here from John Carver:

``Tonight's AAWWW show started on time on 7490, 6160 and 5130. Allan says they are on 3265 also but I can't pull a signal there. Allan and Angela in the studio. Opening talk about a plumbing emergency at the studio and how he dealt with it. He announced early on that the superstation had crapped out this past week and then got sidetracked as usual talking about how beautiful Angela was. Then he got onto diet and Allan commented that hamburger was selling for seven dollars a pound in upper Maine.

Phone call at 0019 from a very angry man who accused Allan of blowing up his phone and wanted him to stop. Then back to health and how the virus was affecting it. Then Angela said out of the blue that we should cut China out of everything and Allan, while agreeing with her to a point, tried to soften what she said.

Phone call at 0031 from Freddie and then things turned political with lots of Trump talk. Another phone call at 0046 about regulations affecting churches being relaxed. Finally gets back to the superstation at 0049 but goes off on a bit of a tangent again. Eventually back to the superstation; Allan says their quarantine finally ended and they could visit the superstation.

He said that the new antenna went down last Wednesday. Allan and Angela climbed up inside the antenna tower and went from level to level checking things out. Didn't notice anything wrong so had someone in the building fire up the transmitter at low power and they listened and watched. Allan could hear something arcing and they started climbing down checking each level again. Finally Allan could see "lightning" below him and decided the problem was on the first level. They shut down the transmitter and moved down. Had them start again at even lower power and could see and hear the problem. A grounding plug has several "fingers" which make contact and something had caused them to arc and they were now all melted off. Allan had all the people working at the superstation come to the antenna tower and the entire crew along with Allan and Angela worked for better than eight hours to clean the area up and fashion new "fingers" from material that they had at the station. He said it didn't cost them anything but time to repair the problem. He stops the tale there to give us the closing prayer at 0058 and the program was off the air at 0100. John Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Did Ted touch them up? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

AIR Chinsurah temporarily relay AIR Kolkata HS

Due to disruption of electricity for AIR Kolkata operating on 657 kHz & 1008 kHz in the aftermath of Cyclone Amphan,  the nearby Super Power Transmitter located nearby  (about 35 kms away)  of AIR Chinsurah  594  kHz  is temporarily relaying AIR Kolkata since yesterday  from 1430 to 1850 UTC  (8. 00 pm to 12.20 am IST)  & maybe other times. However being regional service, the full power of 1000 kW is not used. Last night they used 250 kW only but audible at my location in Hyderabad and at other places.

657 & 1008 kHz is  also broadcasting erratically.

AIR Chinsurah is broadcasting External Service in Bangla to Bangladesh (Mythree Channel) as follows also

0130-0430 & 1130 to 1430 UTC on 594 kHz  with1000 kW

Propagation News – 24 May 2020

RSGB
May 22, 2020

Last week was dominated by extensive sporadic E openings that made 10 metres sound like 20 metres on a good day. The openings were steady and stable, with lots of stations around Europe being very workable. These openings extended to multi-hop as well, with Chris, VO1CH being heard on 10m FT8 at 1240UTC on Monday, the 18th, for example. Low-power beacons have also been heard—the IW4EIR beacon, running just 1.5W, was heard on 28.195MHz at 1600UTC on Monday as well.

If you are interested in monitoring 10m beacons, Martin, G3USF has updated his 10 metre beacon list.

Hopefully, the sporadic E season will continue to improve over the next few weeks. Other than sporadic E, HF conditions have been average for this time of year. Late spring and summer are traditionally times when maximum usable frequencies (MUF) decline during the day due to a change in ionospheric chemistry. However, the good news is that night-time MUFs are higher, with bands like 20 metres remaining open long after sunset if there is sufficient ionisation.

The Sun remains very quiet. Two lighter plage areas—bright regions in the Sun’s chromosphere—have moved into view, but are unlikely to turn into sunspots. As a result NOAA predicts the solar flux index will remain around 70. It also predicts that the Sun will remain stable geomagnetically, bringing a maximum Kp index of two. So it looks like sporadic E will continue to provide the HF fun on the higher HF bands.

VHF and up:

Most of next week will be dominated by high pressure just south of the UK and hence tropo will be a good mode to try. At this time of the year, the strong sunshine makes any nocturnal enhancement of conditions temporary and soon disappears after sunrise and the new thermals destroy the night-time cooling inversion.

However, the main high pressure subsidence inversion is a different case and extends across the same region as the area of high pressure and will be present throughout. This will mean paths across the North Sea, English Channel or Bay of Biscay should do well. Unlike sporadic E, tropo contacts need not be rushed.

A fairly strong Atlantic jet stream will push across the UK this weekend and when it reaches the near continent it will be in a good place for sporadic E in a broad direction range from Scandinavia, round through the Balkans, to Italy and Spain.

Meanwhile, the Atlantic will continue to provide jet stream segments for openings across the pond. The association of sporadic E with jet streams is useful, since the charts show the meandering jet stream extending well east over Russia and could be used for paths to the Far East.

There is a hint that a region of showers may develop around the middle of next week to give an opportunity for some GHz rain scatter propagation.

The Moon’s reaches peak declination on Tuesday and path losses are falling all week. 144MHz sky noise is low.

A number of small showers keep May and June an active time for meteor scatter operations, so keep looking for early morning opportunities before the sporadic E. (rsgb.org)

The K7RA Solar Update

ARRL
05/22/2020

Still no sunspots to report. Spaceweather.com reported on May 20 that the current stretch of days with no sunspots has now reached 18. And with that the 2020 percentage of days with no sunspots has risen to 77%, equal to 2019. Until May 15 that statistic stood at 76%.

Average daily solar flux for the week rose to 69, marginally higher than last week’s average of 68.5. Average planetary A index declined from 4.1 to 3.7, while average mid-latitude A index shifted from 4.7 to 4.

Predicted solar flux for the next 45 days is 70, every day from May 22 through July 5. Predicted planetary A index is 5 on May 22 until June 14, 8 on June 15-16, and 5 on June 17 through July 5.

Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period May 22 until June 16, 2020 from F.K. Janda, OK1HH.

Geomagnetic field will be

quiet on: May 25-31, June 2-5, 9-13

quiet to unsettled on: May 22-24, June 14

quiet to active on: (June 1, 6-8, 15-16)

unsettled to active on: - none predicted!

active to disturbed: - none predicted!

Solar wind will intensify on: May (23,) 24, June (6-7)

- Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.

- The predictability of changes remains lower as there are no indicators.

Scotty, W7PSK, in Everett, Washington wrote on May 21, “Six-meter E Skip for me blew open with a bang. I’ve rarely heard USA stations as it is on 6 since I’ve been on it (about 3 years). I was just on and with my pipsqueak station (SteppIR 3-element beam with a 4th passive element). I just worked J68, KP4 and FG8.”

AA8WH reports from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, "I been listening over the last few days. Yesterday, May 20, 6 meters has been open at various times all day. Sometimes, FT8 would be up, stay up for a while, then a few minutes later would fade back into the noise.

“I figured that must've been sporadic E. I went down to 10 meters and it was quiet, but 12 meters was open, as was 15. Seventeen and 20 meters were hopping most of the day. I was able to hear the W1AW broadcasts up to 15 meters and sometimes even 10 meters.”

Dave, W5BU, reported on May 16, "Yesterday, here in central Texas (EM11), 6 meters was really booming, and the waterfall was filled with signals. Most of the signals were within the continental US and down south into Mexico and Caribbean. I quickly fired up the rig and amp and proceeded to work almost 20 new grids and six new grids in Mexico. The most notable contact was with XCE2IF at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Sur Peninsula (Cabo San Lucas). Additionally, there were multiple contacts into Canada. The amp was needed to complete the contact with the Baja station as he must have had difficulty in copying my signals. I kept hoping that the propagation would extend into Hawaii/Alaska, but no such luck.

“My present antenna is a US Army OE-254 bi-conical vertical at 30 feet as

my 4-element loop-fed Yagi is still waiting for a tower climber for

installation on my tower. My goal is the Worked All States award on six meters, but I am presently stuck at 39 states and six countries confirmed with my modest antenna setup. I pulled the plug about 9:30PM local time and uploaded my log.”

It is nice to read a good science-based article about solar activity in the popular press. I subscribe to a service that sends me every news article that mentions “sunspot”, and some of them are quite bad, and not exactly fact based. The worst offenders in my opinion are the British tabloids. But this article is a good one: https://bit.ly/36lXID1

Jeff, N8II, in West Virginia reported on May 18, "The last week has been amazing for 28 MHz Es with multi hop openings to Europe, Africa the Caribbean, South America, Central American, Mexico, California, and Colorado from here!

“The first opening I noticed was May 8 on 10-meter SSB into Pensacola, Florida, and to KP3JL in Puerto Rico at about 1520Z. Then, on the evening of May 9, I worked HI8AT and HI8RD in the Dominican Republic, KP4TF and WP4IRV in Puerto Rico, and all with signals well over S9 on SSB except Iceland on CW. It sounded more like F2, although that’s impossible with our very low SFI. On May 11 there was a good opening to the southern and southwest US from 2227-2300Z. At 2339Z, FG4SO in Guadeloupe was an easy contact on SSB; he was S7 here. Then, I worked WP4OCB and KP3JL, then TI2GBB, Costa Rica, and HI8AT -- all on 10-meter SSB.

The 14th was amazing, starting off with a couple of contacts with Maine on SSB. At 2207 CT3MD, Madeira Island was S9 and easily worked on CW, followed at 2232Z by HK1MW, in Columbia at S9+, CT1GFK and CT1EWX, both weak form Portugal, with KP4TF booming in again as well -- all on CW. This is probably the earliest in the Es season that I have ever worked Europe on 10 meters. From then until 2300Z, I contacted NP4ET, KP4CQ, and KP4ARR -- all better than S9. I heard Brazil and Argentina on CW calling stations, too. Returning at 2334Z, I found Steve, HP9SAM, in Panama at S9+. HC5DX from Ecuador on SSB, and YY4RCT, in Venezuela answered my SSB CQ about S5. I also worked 9Z4Y in Trinidad on CW and a loud HC5RF on SSB.

“On the 15th, I caught up with HH2AA in Haiti who had been spotted earlier in the week. He had an S9 signal at 1931Z on CW. Then at 2110Z, K6BIG in Pasadena, California answered my CQ on SSB. At 2237Z, CT3MD was logged as an S9 signal on 12-meter CW. Starting 2337Z, HK1ANP was S7 on 10-meter CW and he kindly moved to 12-meter CW and was also S7 there. XE1HON in Mexico called me on SSB, and then I found XE1XR on CW and 4A60I (also Mexico) at 0011Z, both on SSB and both S9."

Regular contributor David Moore sent this article about the Parker Solar Probe: https://bit.ly/2TrgRy8

Another article about solar minimum: https://bit.ly/2LQ94pv

Tom Scott, N5GIT, reported from San Antonio (EL09), “Made an impressive run on 6-meter FT8 on Mother's Day evening (May 10). Out of 133 stations that heard me according to Pskreporter, I contacted 41 stations during a 4-hour stint well into the midnight hour from Canada to Cuba!”

SKYLINE RADIO GERMANY - BACK ON THE AIR IN 2020! - PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!

IT'S ALWAYS ROCK'N'ROLL - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!

Shortwaveradio.de kindly gave us the 5th possibility to be on air with some brandnew shows via their transmitters in Northern Germany.

If you would like to try to catch our programmes, 6 hours on May 30th, 2020, Saturday before Whitsun, 14.00 - 20.00 UTC would be a good time to give us a listen again.

Try the 75 and 49 metre band shortwave on 3975 and 6160 kHz!

Let's keep fingers crossed that propagation is good again!

We received more than 40 reception reports again in December 2019 and we hope we can be as successful as then again! So don't hesitate to write in again.

It might be a good chance for you to grab our first brand-new 2020 eQSL-card design! Attention: This one is available as eQSL-card only!

For our listeners outside of Europe: please check the various WebSDRs, and we will verify every correct reception report with our eQSL also.

Glenn Hauser logs May 20-21, 2020

** SPAIN. 11940, May 20 at 2219, dead air from REE, just like yesterday, while 9690 is VG, 12030 fair with modulation, but 11670 without a signal. I would not be surprised if 11940 have been dead for entire transmission spans today and/or yesterday, 1800-0200.

Congrats to Antonio Buitrago, who has received this honor:

https://gruporadioescuchaargentino.wordpress.com/2020/05/16/antonio-buitrago-director-de-radio-exterior-de-espana-premio-nacional-de-radio-2020/
He also does the Spanish DX program, but perhaps he should pay a bit more attention to whether Noblejas be doing its job. As always, critiques will be moderated if COVID-19 can be reasonably blamed (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, May 20 at 2216, VOT English is on at S7-S9 but undermodulated. Something`s erroneous at Emirler; but no RTTY anyway (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2034 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday May 20 from 2100:20 on WBCQ 7490.03v, VP S6-S8 across daypath.

Also confirmed UT Thursday May 21 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, VG via Maine SDR near the boresight.

Next WOR 2035 should be ready by early UT Friday May 22, first WRMI broadcast at 2200 on 9955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, May 20 at 2218 check, no signal from the WBCQ SuperStation. Normally weak at this hour awayward, but totally off now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs May 19-20, 2020

** ALGERIA [non]. 7295, May 20 at 0548, S9+10/20, RTA in unQur`an Arabic, and *no* self-QRM beepery via FRANCE; whenever logging this, please note whether there is or is not that anomaly.

Another anomaly noted by Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria: ``FRANCE NO SIGNAL of Telediffusion d'Algerie via TDF Issoudun, May 20. 0400-0459 on  6050 ISS 500 kW / 162 deg to CEAf open carrier plus tx TWEET -- 73! Ivo Ivanov`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) What means TWEET in this context?

** CHINA. CNR1 jamming survey May 19 at 1354-1400*:
13070, S9/+10
13030, S9/+10 but sounds slightly weaker
12880, S5-S9
12870, S7-S9
12820, S7-S9
12500, S7-S9
12190, JBA
then by 1358 I tune upward from where I had started downward:
13160, VP; and further downward:
10820, VP
10870, stronger than 10820
By now it`s 1400 as I tune above 11000 to hear nothing, and rechecking the above frequencies, they are *all* off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370, May 19 at 2005, RHC S9, but JBM in Brazuguese; more mod on distorted 15140 in French. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15730, May 19 at 2236, S8-S9, RHC is JBM and suptorted --- so bad that I can`t be 100% sure whether it`s Kriyol or Brazuguese. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13820, May 20 at 1404, noise jamming still here despite this being a B-season-only RM frequency, on 13605 instead during A-seasons. Something`s always incompetent at the DentroCuban Jamming Command (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13740, May 20 at 1404, S9+20/30 of dead air from RHC, after presumed nominal finish circa 1400, while weaker S9+10/20 13700 is still musically modulating; but without any spurblobs. I do have JBA carriers on 13660 and even weaker 13780 as probably leapfrog mixing products, except by 1414, 13740 is off and 13660 is still there, which now could be only BBC Somali via UAE even tho it`s not significantly off-frequency. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY [and non]. 7290, May 20 at 1759, I`m checking IRRS via secret unknown site, via UTwente Holland SDR, whether today there be any breakups in modulation feed like there were on Monday during WORLD OF RADIO. ``Aïda`` theme is already playing, VG signal and not too much ACI either, 1800 IRRS sign-on from ``Milano`` without any frequency or mode details, right into `Feature Story News`, not just headlines but 5 minutes` worth leading with Pompeo vs China; 1805 into `News in Brief from the United Nations`, which also seems current; 1809 to music, folk/rock ballad in English followed by a song in Chinese(?). 1819 starts `Astronomy Cast`, W&M informally chatting, first 4 minutes about how they are coping with COVID-19, then not about astronomy but satellite repair in orbit and other space travel, not the same thing. So far so good, no interruptions, until 1845 dumps off to dead air except for the ute-warble background and ACI splat presumably from 7280 VOV German as there is nothing on first-adjacents 7285 or 7295. I let it run whether it will ever resume by 1900*? Yes, but not until 1857 when rock music fill is playing, 1859 standard sign off with another opera tune, chopped off at 1900* before it finish.

594 kHz, May 20 at 1837, meanwhile, I check for the publicized IRRS MW frequency during this hour only, and indeed there it is with same unsynchronized show plus some humbuzz via KiwiSDR near Venezia. 594 is 1 kW Challenger Radio from Villa Estense, which is only 60 km = 37 miles away on opposite sides of Padova.

Meanwhile, `Astronomy Cast` is news to us since NEXUS/IBA schedule

https://www.nexus.org/member-services/radio-and-tv/schedules/wednesday-program-schedule/ for Wednesday merely shows in MESZ of UT+2:

``20:00 Streaming + 7290+594 kHz English EGR Hope For Today
20:15 Streaming + 7290+594 kHz English News and features from our studio``

So there was no Hope for Today, and generic info for 1815z could include what we heard, but is it on every week? Here it is: http://www.astronomycast.com/about-us/ It looks like this be episode #567 from a month(?) ago: http://www.astronomycast.com/2020/04/ep-567-when-satellites-need-a-house-call/ but the podcast with video starts as if already in progress, not where I heard it start on IRRS; it`s 61 minutes long originally (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 11940, May 19 at 2230, S9/+10, now this is the dead-air frequency of REE instead of 9690 which is VG; fair 12030 also modulating as is very poor 11670. 0015 May 20 recheck, 11940 still dead air. More than a sesquihour of wasted watts this time. Something`s always nonsensical at Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TAIWAN. Re: ``According to the announcement from RTI, the inaugural ceremony of the 15th President will be held in Taiwan on May 20. At 0200 UT President Ts’ai Ing Wan will make her 2nd inaugural speech. Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC) will make special live broadcast of her speech to mainland China and South East Asia, on 1557, 9660, 11880, 12020, 15245, 15310, 15460 kHz. Takahito Akabayashi, Tokyo, Japan``, 0023 UT May 20, WOR iog.

Just after 0200 May 20, woman speaking Chinese to applause, all SW frequencies audible via Jakarta KiwiSDR, 15310 best. No sign of QRM/jamming on any of them! Shenzhen SDR offline... Only traces of some of them audible via Bengaluru. Still going loud & clear past 0218 as I stay on 15310 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) However:

``Using the U. Twente SDR receiver, could detect woman in Chinese on 12020 and 15460 kHz. 12020 was the better of the two and then at about 0209, the noise jamming started on 12020 swamping the signal. Noise jamming could be detected on some other frequencies, too, but not on 15460, which was still in the clear and audible but fairly weak at 0216. Still recording. After about 0230, there seemed to be two Chinese stations on 15460. Taiwan had a frequency of 15459.994 kHz while alone on the frequency with the second one (CNR jamming?) a bit stronger at 15459.999 kHz. -- Richard Langley`` NB, WOR iog.

** TURKEY [and non]. 9830, May 19 at 2226, VOT English is on with music, but buried under heavy high-speed RTTY from cochannel NSS. ANF feature on R75 helps a lot; Recheck 2255, IS is playing, 2256 restart with German IDs interspersed twice minutely; 2300 German sign-on vs RTTY *still* going rather than sometimes finished by 2200. Not rechecked until 2323 by when phantom German from VOT is off. This collision has been going on A-seasons for years. It`s incredible that VOT doesn`t know or doesn`t care to change to any of numerous open frequencies on the band. Don`t they ever get reception reports from listeners complaining? Is there no internal communication between Letterbox and TRT Engineering? Don`t they read my monitoring? Ha!

Likewise NSS: it should not still be utilitizing [coinage, not a mistake] a broadcast band, but is the QRM from TRT insignificant, its RTTY so robust that AM CCI does not matter? Or is it just robotic with nomilitary really trying to receive it? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2034 monitoring, next:
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0100 UT Thursday  WRMI 7780 to NE

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

Thanks this week for financial support from Chris Campbell, Columbus OH, who sent a contribution via PayPal to woradio at yahoo.com with this comment: ``For your long and excellent dedication to a hobby that has expanded my knowledge for a lifetime``

PsyPal not necessarily US funds as they will convert. One may also contribute by MO or check in US funds on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702.

Next WOR 2035 should be ready by early UT Friday May 22 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9395, May 19 at 1857, WRMI-6 is missing from 24-hour schedule; obviously because 9455 is still on as usual. 9395 still off at 2228 check; and at 0011 May 20 -- this time I confirm that all other active WRMI transmitters are on as usual, at widely divergent modulation levels and strengths to this angle. Except 5800 S9+10/20 of dead air instead of SMTV. Finally at 0224 May 20 check, 9395 is back on with music, Oldies? No, Taiwan in Spanish scheduled (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5130, UT Wed May 20 at 0101, no signal from this WBCQ where W5KUB`s Amateur Radio Roundtable is supposed to run; but it`s on poorly in noise at 0108 check.

6159.967V, UT Wed May 20 at 0101, this WBCQ is back on for Hal Turner, with het from Iramadan closer to 6160.00; also // 7490.1 and WRMI on 9455 for his hatetalk (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5085, UT Wed May 20 at 0107, WTWW-2 with rock music instead of competing QSO ham show (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 17775-, May 19 at 1957, still no signal from KVOH, which Ray Robinson hoped would be back on air by this Tuesday. The March 8 program grid if still correct shows M-F Spanish closing times as 1905* on Monday, 2100* on Tuesday & Thursday, 1900* on Wednesday and Friday; English on Saturday until 2000*.

Wed May 20 at 1400 nominal Spanish s/on, no 17775 signal. 1659, maybe trace of JJBBA carrier here despite some HF Es between us, but absolutely no signal at Miami SDR. 1757 no signal here nor there (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
