Glenn Hauser logs September 12-13, 2014

** ARGENTINA. 15345.3, Sept 12 at 2338, RAE good signal with flutter, but undermodulated, with tango. Always varies above and below 15345 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COLOMBIA. 5910, Sept 13 at 0551, Alcaraván Radio, as I tune in mentions sibling station La Voz de Tu Conciencia, cross-promotion? This confuses some monitors about which station is which and whether one is a subsidiary of the other. But they are both called HJDH; I consider then equals. Then the music on 5910 is as usual more popular/secular than the music on 6010 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 15370, // weaker 17580, 17730, Sept 12 at 1335, RHC with speaker in English, Doctora Chang, about ébola, with running voice-over translation into Spanish constantly blocking her press conference until 1341.

6000, Sept 13 at 0550, RHC is off again from this English frequency; not noticed whether resumed after 0600 as it sometimes does. Is there a [non-]scheduled one-hour break, or what? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 9965, Sept 12 at 2353, today I have tuned in early enough to hear R. Cairo`s 2300-2430 English broadcast which can modulate --- but it`s off the air! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 13880, Sept 12 at 1342, poor signal with talk about Iran, i.e. VIRI 6-hour Dari service until 1420, 250 kW, 84 degrees from Ahwaz, the highest channel in the `21`` meter band; the 13785 signal in Arabic is much stronger: 9 hours until 1420, 500 kW, 178 degrees from Kamalabad (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MALI. 5995.0, Sept 12 at 2350, music with fair signal despite being squeezed between Cuba & Cuba, no doubt ORTM. This is right-on frequency but can also hear a het, like from the JBA carrier I was getting previously after Mali was to be off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NIGERIA. 15120-AM, Sept 12 at 0519, VON world news in English is axually readable, sufficiently if not fully modulated; good signal with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OMAN. 15140, Sept 12 at 2337, very poor signal seems ME music, Arabic? Nothing on 15355, so presumed RSO yet again on wrong frequency. 9500 may or may not take over at 0000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 21640, // slightly weaker 21610 and much weaker 21515, Sept 12 at 1330, REE Castilian with interview about a marine park in the Baleares; no autotimesignal played on this semihour. We`ll sure miss these 13m signals heralding a propagating band, once Spain kills itself off SW at monthend. Lower // 17715 is better but only fair (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND. 9390, Sept 12 at 1235, R. Thailand English to SE Asia & Australia continues to be our main source in North America! With the so-called NAm service evenings on 15590 usually inaudible or JBA. Today it`s good strength but heavy flutter with propagation disturbance. All the news seems to be about what various generals are doing, as they now control the government (all previously elected politicians having been dismissed).

No breaks for ads until 1245 and then it sounds like nothing has changed with Bangkok Airways, His Majesty`s Activities, ``Radio Thailand News``, IDs; but then promo for Thailand as ``investors` gateway to Asia`` (if you don`t mind military dictatorships), promo for NCPO == National Council for Peace & Order, national reconciliation; Ministry of Tourism & Sports spots; 1249 Sheraton Hotel serves American breakfasts including eggs benedict! 1251 ID as FM 88 and national network, finally back to Radio Thailand global news, of floods in Indian and Pakistani Kashmir. Yes, this is a hybrid domestic/external service which has always behaved more like a domestic service for farangs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 4316-USB, Sept 12 at 2326, marine weather including from the NHC in MIA about Tropical Storm Edward. Listed as NMN, USCG in Chesapeake VA – as I was homing in on remotely possible but still unheard AFN Diego Garcia on 4319-USB. Bob Wilkner says it`s sometimes audible in FL until another ute blox it at 0006 (Glenn Hauser,

** U S A. HIFER beacons very weak in CW, Sept 12 at 2332, GNK on 13565, with ACI which turns out to be K6FRC on 13566 approx., from WI and CA respectively; also circa 13558 at 2336, weak dashes alternating with 2 beeps sometimes, 3 beeps othertimes; beeps` pitch/frequency are different from the dashes, yet seem to be coördinated (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7265-LSB, Sept 13 at 1351, W6H, Dennis in New Mexico, making Route 66 special-event ham contacts, at 1356 with N5PT in OKC. Roster has him in Albuquerque, but he never mentions that (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1737 monitoring: one more play of last week`s show, Friday Sept 12 at 2130.5 on WRMI 15770, while // 7570 is virtually inaudible in noise level here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 11580, Friday Sept 12 at 2330, WRMI starting `Blues Radio International` with Jesse Finkelstein, who is unaware he`s on any frequency besides 9955; fair-good here and jamming-free to boot, in this hour broken away from Brother Scare service. Greets listeners in Slovakia, Pakistan, Guernsey; and first music by B. B. King.

WRMI has the southernmost advantage of US SW stations, but Sept 13 at 0548, even it can`t make a MUF above 7570 with degraded propagation: inaudible on 7730 (or is it off?), no signals either on 9955, 11580, 11825, but OK on 7570, 7455, 5850 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330-CUSB, Sept 12 at 2357, WBCQ with hard rock music, must be prélude to `Allan Weiner Worldwide`; then at 2358 I try 7490 where Fred Flintstone is wrapping up his show saying AWWW is next, write him to fred7415 @ hotmail.com and good night.

As ``William Tell Overture`` introduces AWWW at 0000 sharp UT Saturday Sept 13, I compare the frequencies: 7490 is synch // 5110-CUSB while 9330 is running 19 seconds later, why? No sign of fourth transmitter on 15420v-CUSB which sometimes appears for this. I am listening to 9330 when at 0005 it suddenly cuts to othermusic while Allan continues on the other two; 0008 he says ``now we`re on 9330``. Opening commentary is ``are we really doing this?`` in US foreign policy (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12105, Sept 12 at 2328 check, WTWW-3 is back to Bibling, on previous schedule, i.e. Yoruba during this hour when it`s after midnite in Yoruba-land --- and a bunch of other African languages are still pending but Ted hasn`t got around to programming them in.

9930, Sept 12 at 2353, WTWW-2 is overmodulating and splattering out to plus/minus 20 kHz, BS // 7570 WRMI, while 9980 WWCR is else at this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 750, Sept 13 at 0601 UT, no signal from KAMA El Paso TX! Instead I am hearing a real Mexican since playing NA ``Mexicanos, al Grito de Guerra``, under WSB. KAMA finally behaving? NO, next check at 0619 UT, there it is again, Spanish talk mixing WSB, 1-800-646-0779 phone for Univisión América or Save the Children mentioned. Googling on phone numbers seems to be quite unproductive anymore (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 900, Sept 12 circa 1800 UT, still no signal from KSGL Wichita, but next check an hour later circa 1900 UT, it`s audible: ``More of the music you remember, KSGL, AM-900, Wichita``, into USA Radio ``News``, so apparently revived during this hour after a week off, or powered way down. Severe splash from much stronger KTLR 890 OKC while it`s playing music (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6025, Sept 12 at 2348, talk and piano music, rumble het, poor signal and CCI. Looking for Red Patria Nueva, Bolivia, but the talk seems more Chinese than Spanish so could be Tibetan as we are close to grayline for Lhasa (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6030, Sept 12 at 1301, I am hearing only a 440-Hz het or tone, per my keyboard, very weak. No jamming noise, but a Cuban jammer transmitter could be involved an hour after Martí quits. Per Aoki the other signals active at this hour are Calgary, Beijing and New Delhi on the darkside, and Addis Ababa on the dayside, never mind that one. Is any one of these off-frequency?

6030-, Sept 12 at 2347, I am again hearing such a tone, on lo side, a few minutes before Martí starts at 0000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6035, Sept 12 at 1301, JBA carrier as I am seeking reactivated Bhutan which nominally closes at 1300 but has been heard by Ron Howard et al., running several minutes later on some occasions. This carrier is still detectable at 1318, 1323, 1326+, so more likely PBS Yunnan, Kunming, CHINA, the ``Shangri-La`` station (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9820, Sept 12 at 2354, rhumble het from two stations slightly apart in frequency, not 1+ kHz off which would be Brasil below 9819; maybe the two China stations, Beibu Bay Radio and CNR2 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15573.0-USB, Sept 12 at 2342, 2-way in Spanish, with heavy engine noise in background (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

NOTE: The site where DXLDs and WORLD OF RADIO audio resides, w4uvh.net, has been inaccessible Sept 13 due to some mixup at the host. We hope to have that resolved ASAP. Meanwhile you can try getting WOR thru podcast linx, on the air (gh)
