Glenn Hauser logs August 16-17, 2014

** CHINA. 11785 & 11805, Aug 16 circa 1310, CNR1 jammers noted with a clip of the Olympix announcer in English. Not sure of time as I didn`t log it, but notable as per later report from Ron Howard that from 1220 to 1303 on 6125, CNR1 was doing ``special live coverage of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony; presented in French, English and Chinese; occasional announcer with live coverage in background, but mostly live coverage; many speeches`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA [and non]. 21690, Aug 17 at 0526, VP, sounds like Firedrake, drumming, i.e. jamming RFA Chinese via TINIAN, which also is in the mix. Anyhow, pleased to be getting any signal on 13m at this hour.

16100, Aug 17 at 1344, CNR1 jammer, very poor with flutter; no other OOBs audible 12-19 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6070 & 9810, Aug 17 at 0119-0121, I notice that these two RHC Spanish frequencies are running at least a full second behind all the others, i.e. a few words: 5040, 6060, 11670, 11760, 11840, 13740, 15230. The two transmitter sites are normally only a reverb/echo apart, from different feed routes, not so much as this; what has happened?

15370, Aug 17 at 1354, bigsig from RHC sounds OK on AM, but with BFO I notice that the carrier is slightly unstable, rippling (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ECUADOR. 6050, Aug 17 at 0118, again no signal from HCJB. We last logged it August 11, and on August 13 at 0430, Luca Botto Fiora in Italy also noted in missing (normally until 0503*), and he alludes to an earthquake. Any further info on such a disaster affecting HCJB? Is anyone hearing it either in the mornings from *0830? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 11710, Aug 17 at 0111, R. Cairo Spanish service is still ASP (ausente sin permiso = AWOL) from this frequency, while 9315 has good signal but open carrier/dead air. At least there`s 12070, at 0114 very distorted and suppressed modulation. 9965, the Arabic frequency is also very distorted at 0109. 13850, Aug 17 at 0519 has big hum with extremely distorted Arabic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9935, UT Sunday Aug 17 at 0107 check, ERTOpen is off again (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN [and non]. 11730, Aug 16 at 1313, weak signal in presumed Pashto as scheduled from VIRI via Sirjan, now clear from QRMI moved to 11580; but overshadowed by 11735 North Korea in English.

12025, Aug 17 at 0114, VRII Spanish is gone again from its third frequency, still audible on 9860 and can`t tell if it`s still under 11760 Cuba at 0115.

13590, Aug 17 at 0521, VIRI IS, poor on tail of semi-hour Russian service at 0450, 500 kW, 325 degrees also USward from Kamalabad.

15430, Aug 17 at 0521, VRII IS, fair, 0523 sign-on in Spanish, 289 degrees from Kamalabad for Europe and North Africa. This beam is on Gibraltar, so a compromise between the two continents; is there still a significant Spanish-speaking SW audience in Morocco? Kamalabad is the site right outside Tehran.

17660, Aug 17 at 0523, Iran IS, NA, poor signal, not Spanish, into Qur`an; it`s the `Bosnian` service, 297 from Kamalabad (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** JAPAN [non]. 11730, Aug 16 at 0544, NHK French via FRANCE to Africa with novelty song, no CCI, now that WRMI has moved its 24-hour BS to 11580. It so happens that WRMI was aiming right at France, and may have got in around the skip zone from Issoudun, but never a good idea to try that tactic. Anyhow, Jeff White says the target of 11730/11580 is eastern North America altho using the 44 degree beam toward Europe, which is about 25 degrees off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA SOUTH. 15575, Sat Aug 16 at 1353:41-1356:41, KBS World Radio gives Kevin O`Donovan in Farmington NM exactly 3 minutes for his Listening Tips, but poor copy as this frequency is in its seasonal decline to nothing by winter. Mentions something about Voice of Vietnam, and the jazz, swing shows from KVOH (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 6185-, Aug 16 at 0552, wild jazz as XEPPM is still on way beyond its nominal 0500*. Aug 17, already off at 0535 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 9600-, Aug 17 at 0531, Station YHWH is back! First time heard since July 19-20; fair signal, and slightly on the lo side. Usual stuff selectively quoting Bible to make case for Yahweh as supreme god. At 0543, interrupts recording(?) for live announcement twice, ``please go to 9605``, and then shifts to that from later in the *0543 minute, resuming rant in progress. I am dozing, but still going at 0609 when I turn off. Not clear why the shift was necessary, as no QRM on 9600, altho XJBS Urumqi is listed before and after; maybe anticipating the imaginary 9600 Algerian in HFCC from 0600. Terry Krueger, FL, was also hearing 9600 as early as 0520 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1530, Aug 16 at 0602 UT, instead of CO or TX cheaters instead of WCKY, dominating is Mexican music and ``Quebuenatulsa.com`` ID. That website however leads to 1270! Whatever the identity mixup, the 1530 facility, FCC #61985, is licensed as 5 kW direxional DAYTIME ONLY as KXTD in Wagoner.

Apologists for daytimers running at night have explained that it`s easy for the automation to fail to turn off the signal at sundown, following a power failure, glitch, not properly reset --- well, tough, there is still supposed to be somehuman in charge of the whole thing to take care of that! (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, Aug 16 at 0104, R. Chaski carrier until 0108:17.5* which is another 6 seconds later than yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SOUTH AFRICA. 15420, Aug 17 at 1353, open carrier interrupted by BBC loop announcements that there is ``no programmming`` and referring us to BBCWorldService.com  How courteous of them to inform us of this! But it could also apply to countless other frequencies. SENTECH has brought this up prior to the 1400 Somali service; see also USA: WBCQ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 17850 fair, and // much weaker 17715, Sat Aug 16 at 2021, REE with item about live coverage of some earthquake; 2025 program ID as `Amigos de la Onda Corta`. This airing was not originally on the schedule; I heard it a couple times during El Mundial, and assumed it was filler because REE could not broadcast the only fútbol games that mattered in what was normally `Tablero Deportivo` on Saturday evenings --- but here AOC is still on during this hour. I wonder if it will be canceled along with most/all other REE-produced programs, in favor of just relaying domestic services if onda corta survives at all from Noblejas (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Aug 17 at 0114:47 musical prélude starts on SLBC, poor with flutter, and mistimesignal until 0115:18 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1734 monitoring: confirmed on new frequency and time from WRMI, UT Sunday Aug 17 after 0100 on 5950, and yes, it`s the latest 1734, not a 1733 replay; fair signal but sufficient, altho het on hi side from R. Pio Doce, Bolivia on 5952.4. (Marcos Cox in Chile complains that WRMI QRMs it, and WRMI should move: we see that 5945 is unoccupied during the 23-02 span WRMI is now on 5950.)

9975, Aug 17 at 0122, only a JBA signal from Tashkent until *0123:07 KVOH carrier on with tone; 0125:37 musical prélude, but cuts off the air one minute later, and not back by 0200, so the 0131 UT Sunday airing of WORLD OF RADIO is missed again. We regret their transmitter problems and hope they can get a new one soon! Next:

UT Monday 0259v on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB
Tuesday 1100 & Wednesday 1315 on WRMI 9955
Wednesday 0630 & 1430 on HLR 7265-CUSB
Wednesday 2100 on WBCQ 7490v
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non]. 11580, Aug 16 at 1314, WRMI`s new BS frequency aimed northeast, ex-11730, now has CCI in Vietnamese, i.e. KTWR GUAM, and at 1413 in Korean, also KTWR after 1345. But that`s cool: there are countless other BS frequencies from WRMI and several other stations; and unlikely to be much of a problem for KTWR in Asia. The overlap is 12-15 UT, except Sat/Sun only until 1445, per Aoki. Ivo Ivanov says the scheduled All India Radio broadcast at 1745-2030 on 11580 is off, so that helps (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [and non}. 15420.0-CUSB, Aug 16 at 1357, WBCQ ID and IS loop as happens at this hour only on Saturdays prior to the live tabernacle service from Brother Scare. I am pleased to find that WBCQ has adjusted one of its wandering transmitters to be almost zero-beat with BBC, within SAH rather than LAH range. But dumps off the air at 1401 just as BS is getting started, and still off at 1411 leaving only BBC Somali via SOUTH AFRICA. Not rechecked until 2018, and now WBCQ is on with the androgynous anapest (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 12105, Sat Aug 16 at 2016, I notice that Bibling Worldwide on WTWW-3 has again been shoved aside, now for `QSO with Ted Randall`, evidently because the usual frequency for it, 9475 WTWW-1, is off the air; but QSO was supposedly on at 18-20 UT only. At 2102 recheck, dead air on 12105, but 2104 Ted ID and presumably back to Bibling. And now 9475 is back on the air with SFAW.

5085, UT Sun Aug 17 at 0107, WTWW-2 playing `Rose Garden` so evidently Ted is doing his country music show normally on UT Mondays, tonight instead of QSO. More ad-hoc, seat-of-pants last-minute programming changes at WTWW (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. RF 22, Aug 17 at 1410 UT, morning tropo from Kansas is up with the usual Wichitans, and as far as Great Bend, KSNC ``2``. Now I can tell that it provides no 2.2 with Telemund[o] like its parent station RF 45, KSNW, 3.2, now does (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** VIETNAM [non]. 12005, Aug 17 at 0113, VOV in English, VG signal but with ``generator hum/roar``, which is normally associated with ASCENSION rather than Woofferton; have they switched sites, or is WOF also capable of this? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 5995+, Aug 17 at 0104, JBA carrier slightly on the hi side, Mali still on? With BFO and 5-kHz steps on the DX-398, I can tell that this is further above 5995 than Chaski is above 5980, which is also slightly on the hi side compared to e.g. 6000 Cuba. Still too much RHC around 0600, so could those further east confirm whether Mali leaves its carrier on overnight and/or its exact frequency at other times (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
