Glenn Hauser logs April 10-11, 2013

** ALASKA. 7355, April 11 at 1224, nondescript music, 1226 `The English Express` about conversational English, this time explaining the expression ``Take one for the team``, originating with baseball; fair signal, typical KNLS fare (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ALBANIA. 11710, April 11 at 0507, CRI English fair signal about virus chickens; whence? Did not realize the Cërrik relay was doing English at this time, 05-07, 140 degrees; but I do commonly notice the Arabic relay at same time on 9515, 9590, 11775 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRALIA. 11387-USB, April 11 at 1300, robo YL in Oz English with VOLMET; quite weak and could never catch a location, but an unholy mix of English and metric units, kilometres and feet and knots, depending on the item; ``out`` and off at 1304:20. Per
http://www.dxinfocentre.com/volmet.htm#11.3
11387 VOLMET 00, 30 AXQ421 AUS Australian (Brisbane)
to be followed at 05 by Calcutta, but nothing heard here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRALIA. 15400, April 11 around 1245, HCJB, VG signal in S Asian language but mentions `Back to the Bible` and `George Lucas` in same sentence, mixed with S Asian songs, which are interrupted for talk bits. EiBi shows Hindi during this quarter-hour on Thursdays, i.a. In the clear now, but after 1300 colliding with Iran`s Urdu service, e.g. at 1327 check making fast SAH, while Iran is good and clear on / 15300. At 1410 rerecheck still a bad mix here on 15400. I`ve mentioned this a few times, and yet to see any comment about this situation from monitors in S Asia, where I think it must be a severe problem.

15340 also VG at same time, as a brief period when Kununurra is running two transmitters at once. EiBi shows daily at 1230-1300 this one is in RWG = Rawangi, with 60 kilospeakers each in  Burma, and Arunachal Pradesh, India (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** AUSTRALIA [and non]. 6140, April 11 at 1145, RA is poor but clear here, a few sex behind stronger // 6150 which is colliding with CUBA. 6140 is in A-13 schedule at 11-13, 13 degrees from Kranji, SINGAPORE.

11945, April 11 at 1258, RA English audible here until abrupt 1259*, now poor signal as aimed toward Asia; this is Shepparton-C, an SW100A, which now retunes to 11665 for the Chinese sesquihour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BANGLADESH. 15505, April 11 at 1359, propagation from this area is pitiful today, but I do make out a JBA timesignal about 9 seconds fast before 1400 as BB is starting Urdu. Typo in yesterday`s report: timesignal to 1359:48.5, not 1358:48.5 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake April 11, before and after 1200:
6110, good at 1147 atop: VOA Chinese via Thailand at 11-13 (and also on 6110 via Tinang at 13-15, per Aoki). No full bandscan at this time, but 6110 still FD at 1228.

7250, fair at 1228; unusual spot for FD and nothing in the lists to explain why; presumably something objexionable to the ChiCom showed up here. In fact, altho 7250 is a busy frequency elsewhen, nothing at all is scheduled at this hour per Aoki and EiBi, while HFCC shows a registration for Bangladesh starting at 1200, but surely unapplied

Firedrake April 11 before 1300:
12370, very good at 1258
13820, good at 1256 mixing with R. Martí carrier about to sign on
13970, poor at 1256
14800, very good at 1256
15560, poor at 1252, het on hi side
15800, poor at 1252
15900, good at 1252
16160, poor at 1254 with flutter; none in the 17s
16250, fair at 1253 with flutter
16360, fair at 1253 with flutter

Firedrake April 11 before 1330:
7470, poor at 1323, vs RFA Tibetan via Mongolia
6030, very poor at 1324 mix with presumed SOH

Firedrake April 11 before 1400:
12370, very good at 1338
13530, very good at 1336 with flutter
13970, poor at 1336
14700, good at 1335 with het
15800, fair at 1331
16160, poor at 1331 with flutter
16250, poor at 1331 with flutter
17170, very good at 1333; none in the 18s

Firedrake April 11 after 1400:
15525, good at 1416 mixing equally with V. of Tibet [q.v.], Madagascar

Firedrake April 11 before 1500:
12230, very poor at 1441
13530, fair at 1441
14750, fair at 1441
15900, good at 1439; none in the 16s, 17s
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 11752, 11768, 11776 and 11784, April 11 at 1339, the 8-kHz jammer spurs from 11760 are detectable here, the higher ones just barely as hets to 11775 and 11785 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** COSTA RICA. 5995, April 11 at 0517, Castilian on poor signal, i.e. REE has failed to switch from 5965 at 0400. Nothing on 5965 now. This will be bad news for Mali after 0600 if REE stays on 5995 until 0800 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6060, April 11 at 0057, surprised to hear RHC in French // 5040, the only frequency it is supposed to be on; and at 0107 recheck, 6060 is in English // 6000 & 6165, the only frequencies that is supposed to be on. 6060 is supposed to be nothing but Spanish at 0000-0500. Plugged in wrong program feed line?

15195-15280, April 11 at 0102, approx. span of buzznoise emanating from defective RHC 15230 transmitter; worst peaks are at plus/minus 10 kHz away.

15130-15330, April 11 at 1150, buzz from 15230 detectable out to this range on otherwise deadband before sunrise here, not open yet from anywhere but Cuba, making 15230 the OSOB. Worst peaks circa 15290, 15190 but constantly varying in strength and position. An hour later, however, no buzz.

15511 approx., April 11 at 1358, getting ready for Bangladesh, weak bits of distorted RHC audio here // 15340 and 15230 (which are synchronized, so all from same site). Thus it`s a spur but not a mixing product, from which? 171 kHz above 15340, it should also appear on 15169, but nothing audible there. 281 kHz above 15230, it should also appear on 14949 --- there there is some mush at 1406 altho can`t make a positive match to RHC audio on the others. IIRC have previously logged an RHC spur around 15510 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** DIEGO GARCIA. 12759-USB, April 11 at 0056, AFN is barely audible with music, and after 0100 with talk, presumed news (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY [non]. 15700, April 11 at 1239, good signal in French about fighting poverty; 1242 DW ID. Is 250 kW non-direxional from RWANDA during this hour, doing very well here. One thing for sure: if you hear DW, it can`t be from Germany.

15595, April 11 at 1329, DW IS, very poor with flutter, 1330 opening unknown language. HFCC shows it`s `Prs` via SINGAPORE, 250 kW at 315 degrees. However, Aoki shows it as Dari. I expect the Iranians and Afghans can tell the difference (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GUAM. 15190, April 11 at 1402, fair signal with gospel huxter in English, Ozy accent. I was all set to assume this as R. Africa, Equatorial Guinea, which I had not run across in quite a while, on its irregular schedule, and which hardly ever bothers to ID, until looked up in Eibi: altho that might start at 1400, definitely from 1400 in English, Sunday thru Friday is KTWR (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KOREA NORTH. 6480, April 11 at 1143, Juche jamming noise, same as on 6518, 6600, etc. On 6480 it`s against MND Radio, scheduled only until 1150, altho the jamming may run much longer per Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** KUWAIT. 15540, April 10 at 2100, just tune in to R. Kuwait closing English as timesignal seems a few sex late; then check 17550 for Arabic, but no signal there; yesterday it was fairly good. MUF varies a lot depending on propagation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 710, April 11 at 1201 UT, M&W opening `Noticias 7-10` with efemérides, i.e. almanac, this day in history, etc.; is this XEDP? Yes, soon weather for Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua. It could have been an hour-long morning news block, but maybe not: 6 days ago on Friday it switched to the Low German preacher at 1210, but don`t know about today (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 870, April 11 at 1206 UT, XETAR with web info in Spanish, then switch to presumed Tarahumara, satisfying my yen for something exotic if not on XEDP. Only fair signal but dominant at the moment around sunrise (today in Enid: 1203), traces in its null of KFJZ or maybe WWL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, April 11 at 1211 UT with KMOX nulled, very weak music, and growing a little. Maybe KEOR Catoosa has signed on by now, tho legal from 1145 in April (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1650, April 11 at 0110 UT check, a bit of Dennis Miller vs Spanish from El Paso or Denver. Trying to reconfirm whether KYHN Sallisaw/Ft Smith AR has finally started regular schedule. Did not recognize this as program preview, but lost to QRM before could be sure (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU. 5980, April 11 at 0055, R. Chaski carrier is JBA with BFO in noise level as I am on the porch at 36 degrees, enough to melt much of the ice on the trees and lines late in the day. Cutoff timed at 0103:07 = 5 seconds later than yesterday (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [non]. 11530, April 11 at 1259, VOR ending English saying english.ruvr.ru, via usual noisy transmitter in TAJIKISTAN, 1300 `Chariots of Fire` theme and opening Hindi for an hour, to resume English at 1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SARAWAK [non]. 15420, April 11 at 1238, something weak here and nothing on 15430, presumed R. Free Sarawak, via TAIWAN. Has their website caught up yet with real frequency instead of 15430? Don`t know; get a ``no site configured`` at
http://radiofreesarawak.org (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAUDI ARABIA. 15120, April 11 at 1230, `Salaam Aleikum` but otherwise not in Arabic, mixed with music. Couple IDs sound like ``Radio Serbia`` but can`t be that. Must be ``Radio Saudia`` or somesuch, as all references agree this can only be BSKSA Riyadh Bengali service. At 1233 inserted English words, ``National People`s Congress`` and ``Communist Party``, referring to China? 1249 now in Qur`an, fair with flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SWAZILAND. 15360, April 11 at 1413, good signal, TWR Urdu suddenly switches to English, ``please visit us online`` and spelling out an unfamiliar website I cannot copy completely; then postal address in Lahore, 1415 IS once, open carrier. If you want to hear more of that nice music-box, tune in a few minutes before 1400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TIBET [non]. 15525, April 11 at 1358, good open carrier, 1400 starts unknown language, but in the clear. Consulting HFCC first or only, one would be totally misled, as it shows only IBB in Kurdish at 1400-1500 via Wertachtal. On contrary, Aoki & EiBi do not show that but instead at 1400-1428, V. of Tibet via MADAGASCAR.

That explains why at next check 1416 there is now Firedrake on 15525, and unusually about equal level to VOT --- if I understood Tibetan, I could understand the Tibetan despite this jamming, and wish the same for the dentro-Tibetans (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1664 monitoring: ready in time for first airing on WRMI, UT Thursday April 11 at 0330: confirmed on webcast, but only wall-of-noise jamming on 9955; tnx a lot, Arnie! Can you imagine anyone but him condoning, even facilitating blockage of a fellow DX program? BTW, at 0504 there is no jamming against Brother Scare, altho there often is at other times.

Further much better WOR chances: Thursday 2100 on WTWW-1 9479; UT Friday 0330v (often a bit early), on WWRB 3195 (and we hope Dave will bring back 5050 as a less noisy frequency); UT Saturday 0130v (usually later) on Area 51 via WBCQ 5110v-CUSB; Saturday 1500 on WRMI 9955; Saturday 1730 on WRN via SiriusXM 120 (penultimate, as the satellite service is dropping WRN as of April 25!); Saturday 2330v on WTWW-2 9930; UT Sunday 0400 on WTWW-1 5830; Sunday 2315v on WTWW-2 9930.

The Hamburger Lokalradio airings on 7265-CUSB scheduled 0630 & 1430 UT Saturdays and Wednesdays have been missing again, says Ivo Ivanov. Please let us know if you hear HLR back on the air with WOR or anything else (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 690, April 11 at 0539 UT, open carrier/dead air yet again after local midnite from KGGF KS, vs. IBOC 687 from WLW-700, and weak understation probably KTSM. Anyhow it`s good for any Coffeyvillans trying to DX something else on 690, like I can do normally for only 5 minutes on 960. Whenever I tune by 690 around sunrise, KGGF is modulating; would be interesting to discover at what time it come back to life, and do they perform a sign-on or sign-off which would reveal it`s intentional to go silent overnight, merely neglecting to turn off the carrier? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 930, April 11 at 0532 UT, without really trying as I am bandscanning, here`s English with WKY Spanish easily nulled. Yes, yet again it`s WTAD Quincy IL, which must still be on ND day pattern instead of nulling toward OK; during break in C2C, with local ads, 613 AC, something ``courtesy of star radio``, Quincy weather: rain, 41/49/32 lo/hi/lo; ``Talkradio 930, WTAD`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1470, April 11 at 1217 UT, Bill Bennett himself delivering a commercial in his `Morning in America` show. Website is user-unfriendly forcing you to find a station by entering `your` zip code. Suspect often-heard KYYW Abilene TX, so try its zip, 79605, but that brings up a different station there, KSLI 1280. NRC AM Log however shows its format is C&W, while KYYW is news-talk. So go to the KYYW website itself
http://1470kyyw.com/shows/ --- bingo, MIA is on there at 7-8 am CDT, tho Bill doesn`t know it (there`s a lot of stuff he doesn`t know but thinx he does) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
